We have moralized the experiences of feeling either UP (it’s good!) or DOWN (that’s bad). It’s seen as better to be happy, peppy, and positive; whereas if you’re feeling blue or sad or angry, we’ve turned that in to a negative. Part of what still needs deconstructing for many of us is this moralization of our emotional world. Rather than bottling or repressing our “down” feelings, may we learn to name, accept, and release them.

Lots of us have experienced a kind of Deconstruction from conservative/evangelical religion. A good portion of those folks have left the church entirely (for very good reasons). But some of us have remained in the world of church. And then a handful of us (like, well, Kate & Colby) have both stayed AND tried to LEAD churches. What is like to try and deconstruct while still attending (and leading!) church?

This is a faaaaascinating conversation!!

You know what can suck? Reading your Bible and feeling like you are neither included nor counted.

You know what can be incredibly healing? Having someone show you how, in fact, you are right there on the page, part of the story.

This is one of the many gifts Austen Hartke gives people, a way to read the Bible so that trans and gender-expansive people see themselves in scripture.

In part three of our series, “Quote, unQuote, Deconstruction,” we attempt to get a little more clear about why it is that we don’t always entirely resonate with or connect to the #Deconstruction movement. We totally affirm the value of such language and terms, and yet sometimes we find ourselves feeling, well, not very deconstruction-y.

Continuing our series, “Quote, unQuote, Deconstruction,” we talk about how we grew up being told a story where we were responsible for the eternal safety of our loved ones. We needed to get them to be Christians, or else they’d spend forever in hell. Now, even on the other side of such (bad) theology, we still suffer from the impact of a kind of savior complex. More and more people don't believe in God anymore. At least, not as they've previously thought of "God."

In our modern, secular age, dominated by science and technology, is there space for enchantment any longer? Or have we left all that behind?

In his latest book, "Hunting Magic Eels" (https://amzn.to/3gpDIWz) Richard Becks offers a way to re-enchant our faith in the midst of this, our skeptical age.

We met Richard years ago at our church camp, and instantly we knew he was one of our favs.

Hope you enjoy either getting to know him for the first time, or learning more about his latest work!

As an author, speaker, disability advocate, and trauma survivor, Stephanie Tait aims to do what she believes is sorely lacking in and around Christianity--connect sound theology and practice with the unashamed acceptance of struggle in the present tense.

According to Stephanie, pain does not exist on a spectrum opposite of joy. Rather, pain, with the way it weaves into our lives, families, and work habits, has been the connecting point of grace and struggle that defines her career.

Come be a part of what will surely be a real, raw, and fascinating conversation!

In this Garage Session, we discuss the phenomenon occurring right now where evangelical leaders are attempting to tell people why they’re deconstructing.

Kate points out that this experience—of leaders/pastors telling us our story for us—is precisely what evangelicalism has always been about.

Join us as we begin pushing back against this effort to control those of us who’ve left evangelicalism behind.

While it has always been a part of how she’s seen herself, it wasn’t until fairly recently (via a post on Instagram) that she realized this part of her was less clear—at least, explicitly so—to others in her life.

May you, however you identify, find acceptance, belonging, safety and love in this special episode.

When Susan Cottrell was faced with the decision to either support her daughter (who'd just come out as a lesbian) or maintain alignment with her evangelical church, she chose her child.

Then, she created Freed Hearts (https://www.freedhearts.org) because she knew that other people had to make similar choices, and needed resources, support, and belonging.

We welcome Susan to The Kate & Colby Show with wide open hearts, astonished by her tenacious insistence to love people unconditionally. Listen in as Susan talks about her journey of discovery that sometimes in order to more closely follow Jesus we must shift away from conventional religious systems.

In this Garage Session, Kate and Colby share from their experience when they began moving in different directions from the agreed-upon-script they were both given (and dutifully lived out) from their evangelical heritage.

Listen in as Kate shares how, no, actually she’s not just “okay” when her and Colby disagree on something. Rather, she moves through a process of discernment to figure out what the feelings are and why.

It’s some real good stuff, y’all. You’re gonna love it.

———

ALSO IN THIS EPISODE

-Our dog, Belle, struggles to let us get started. She’s a needy (and loud) pup.

-Kate and Colby discuss how/why the feel differently about greeting each other in the morning and wishing one another goodnight. This little convo is worth the price of admission!

-The hosts reflect on how humans became so tribal (good and necessary!) and how now that mentality can work against us.

———

The GARAGE Sessions are special episodes where we pick a particular subject to discuss, share stories from the heart, and laugh while we learn to love one another.

CATCH US LIVE ON WEDNESDAYS

For you podcast listeners, don’t forget that we stream LIVE to YouTube and Facebook, Wednesdays at 7pm PST.

What do you do when you're trying to raise kids in this world and you don't want them weighed down with some of the same religious baggage you had, but you also want to contribute to shaping their values and inspiring them to see what it means to show up in the world for things like justice and peace?

Well, if you're Daneen Akers, you create a stunning illustrated book of modern day saints and holy troublemakers.

Kate & Colby welcome their friend, Daneen, to the show to talk about, "Holy Troublemakers & Unconventional Saints."

ABOUT THE KATE & COLBY SHOW

Our mission is Holistic Care for the Soul.

As post-Evangelicals, and self-identifying Progressive Christians (or at least, most days), we offer unique insights into the world of relationships, spiritual practices, parenting, and more.

We met when we were in Junior High, got married in 2003, and soon grew our family to four kids.

Living in San Diego, we also co-Pastor the church we started in 2014, Sojourn Grace Collective: https://www.sojourngrace.com

The Kate & Colby Show was a podcast first (and still is!), and is also now a LIVE Show that streams on Wednesdays at 7pm pacific.

Welcome to The GARAGE Sessions! Beginning with Season 6, The Kate & Colby Show became a LIVE show on YouTube and Facebook. Which we love. AND, we also miss the old days of just sitting down talking to each other about life, love, heartache, faith, and all the other good stuff.

Enter, The GARAGE Sessions.

These special episodes are for those of you who, like us, miss the format of Kate and Colby taking on a particular subject, or, sharing stories from the heart, or, just laughing and learning to love one another.

On this episode, we explore the idea that even though within progressive land there exists high values on tolerance, the truth is that in order for that to be most fully lived out there must be a kind of intolerance toward certain ideas, beliefs, and postures.

It’s a tricky balance, but Colby thinks Kate is on to something when we she starts considering the work of birth and death doulas.

You’ll just have to listen to know what we mean.

If you’ve been around The Kate & Colby Show for even a little bit then you know we have feels about evangelicalism—the religious heritage from whence we came. So when the IG account @thenewevangelicals started popping up everywhere, we got curious. So curious, in fact, that we invited the founder, Tim Whitaker, to come on the Show and chat with us. What ensued was educational, inspiring, and gave us all dose of hope for the future.

Joining the show this week is author, podcaster, and revolution starter, Cindy Wang Brandt! (https://cindywangbrandt.com)

Cindy has stirred up all sorts of good, holy trouble in the world of parenting--specifically as it relates to trying to raise children without the baggage of religious fundamentalism. We (Kate & Colby) can't get enough of important conversations around raising children to be compassionate, kind, and emotionally balanced. We were amazed at how much alignment Cindy and us have when it comes to treating kids as fully human worthy of respect, and trust, and freedom.

We highly recommend Cindy's book, Parenting Forward, for all you Progressive Christian parents out there! https://www.amazon.com/Parenting-Forward-Children-Justice-Kindness/dp/080287603X

We are joined by Candice Czubernat, founder of the nation's premiere LGBTQ telehealth organization, The Christian Closet (thechristiancloset.com)

Candice became a dear friend of ours when (among other things) she visited Sojourn Grace years ago, was a brilliant guest speaker, and challenged us as leaders to be MORE clear about just how open and affirming our faith community is. And she was/is RIGHT! That sort of clarity is desperately needed.

We talked about all sorts of good things, such as: when she told us about some of the gifts of being queer; how an LGBTQ person can navigate the complexities of a family that doesn't accept them, and why tele-health is actually really, really good and important.

Maybe you, like us, grew up in a religious context where “justice” was basically just something God would deal with—and much later down the road. In this episode, we share how our evolving beliefs led us to understand that seeking justice HERE and NOW is very, very much a part of what it means to have and do Faith. If God hears the cries of the oppressed, and if we are how God moves in the world, then its up to us to do something about injustice.

Last week we described faith as, “The things we choose to believe, which inform how we choose to act.” Some people weren’t digging our use of the word “choice.” So in this message, we explore how much agency do we really have in terms of what we believe and how we act. Is it really our “choice?” Such a fascinating conversation.

Can we talk about FAITH for a bit? What IS it? Why do we have it? How do we practice it?

Have you ever been told “stop being so emotional?” Or maybe thought, “wow, that person isn’t thinking with their head, they’re being controlled by their emotions.” In this episode, Kate and Colby dive in to this phenomenon, where society often over values what we call “rational thinking” and under vales our emotional capacity. This often shows up in gendered stereotypes as well (which Kate and Colby happen to fulfill rather predictably, so we need to talk about THAT, yes? ;)

It's the season 2 finale! We've had a great time responding to a whole bunch of listener questions in this season, and we're closing it out with one more big one. Julie wrote to us sharing her thoughts about how we can learn so much from other religions when we approach one another with respect and open minds, but what do we do about the seemingly exclusive claim to truth that Christians often insist belongs to Jesus alone? Specifically, what do we do with the words of Jesus himself found in John 14:6: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Let's do a bit of a deep dive into these words from the Bible and see what we uncover. Thanks for tuning in for this round of "Ask Kate and Colby," and we're looking forward to kicking off a new season of The Kate and Colby Show in a few weeks!

This extension of last week's episode where Kate interviewed Colby goes deeper into what we've both been learning about gender roles and how we're not truly whole people when we only live into the parts society tells us we're supposed to play. How do we reframe our understanding of masculinity and femininity so that all of us can be both strong and tender, bold and nurturing? This is one of the most important topics we've discussed, and we hope you find yourself coming alive through the conversation.

We are so thankful for today's listener question. It's not often these days that people who find themselves disagreeing are willing to work to understand one another, but that's exactly what Liza is doing. She is attempting to better understand progressive Christianity as someone who considers herself a modern Christian, but who holds to some more traditional beliefs: things like heaven and hell, for instance. She confesses that sometimes she feels like we are attacking traditional Christianity, and has some questions for us about that approach. Her letter opened the door for some great conversation about how we hope to interact with our fellow Christians who are more traditional, and what we can all do to better understand one another.

Today's question comes from Sara, who is working out how to handle a message she carries with her from her time in a traditional evangelical upbringing. Sara really just feels compelled to live what she calls a simple life: raise great kids, take care of the land she feels fortunate to live on, love the hell out of her husband. But she struggles with the narrative of the "epic Christian" life—one that so many of us have been told our own lives should resemble. Sell everything, go into missions, serve 19 times a week at church—do BIG things for God! How can we reframe our understanding of "big" and "small" things, and the value they each have when it comes to how we live our lives?

Rebekah sent us a great question to discuss this week. She is dating—and lately, talking marriage and kids with—a partner who is agnostic, which has created some tension with her traditionally conservative Christian family. She was raised to believe that being "unequally yoked with unbelievers" is a pretty serious offense. We can relate. Let's talk about where that idea comes from (the apostle Paul), who it was meant for (Christ followers in the city of Corinth), and how it's been used and abused in our modern lives (Colby may have once quoted this principle when breaking up with a girlfriend!).

We are still taking questions! This week, Matt, who is a worship leader at a progressive Christian church, writes in with a question we've found to be a common one—in fact, it's one we've asked ourselves over the years. When you've embraced a more open and progressive theology, how do then find ways to worship that better align with these values?

The bottom line: it's hard to keep singing songs about substitutionary atonement and total depravity when those things are no longer the crux of your faith. We've had quite a journey with this topic, and it turned out we had a lot to say about where we've found great resources and music to help the people who attend the church we pastor worship in a way that aligns with our mission to help people come alive in the truth that they are loved, liberated, and empowered. You might even be surprised to hear that we didn't completely ditch the whole traditional church music catalog... listen in as we share our thoughts and journey around this issue that so many progressive Christians seem to encounter.

This week's question comes from Tina, who is looking for a little guidance on how to overcome the fear that inevitably shows up when your soul is calling you to make, write, create, say, and share something. This question got us very excited, because we LOVE to make stuff and we know how challenging the creative process can be, especially when you're battling that inner critic and the fear it likes to stir up. We're excited to share some of the practices and ideas that help us when we need to write books and blogs, preach sermons, or even make this podcast. This conversation is all about how to create fearlessly—let's dive in!

We're continuing to answer listener questions, and this week's comes from James, who champions feminism AND also likes to hold doors for the women he dates. What place, if any, does chivalry have in modern relationships between women and men? There are quite a few layers to this quandary, and today we're going to unpack the roots of chivalry, power dynamics between the sexes, and courteous impulses that just might stem from a patriarchal system that still has a small foothold in our thinking.

We're continuing to sift through some of the questions you've sent our way, and today's is a doozy! Andrea wrote in to share that she's become an "accidental agnostic," and wanted to know what we think about the nature of God. Being, spirit, energy, force, guy in the sky—what do we mean when we say "God?" Let's dive in the deep end together!
