045: When I was a kid, finding somewhere to hunt or fish was easy. Besides our own farmland, we could literally drive down the road and pull into nearly every 40 acre field or woods and begin our adventure.We live in different times now. Land has become scarce, and No Trespassing signs along with chains, gates, and cables now greet us at every turn in. If one goes the route of leasing or buying land to hunt on, they are looking at a huge investment. Is public land a person's only option? I recently learned about an exciting new program called Outdoor Access. The idea draws from the new sharing economy that is emerging, and gives landowners the opportunity to list their land for hunting, fishing, hiking, etc on a short term basis. They are not locked in to a lease, and they can offer it up at certain times of the year when they are using it less. Outdoor lovers are able to access the property for weekends or a few days without breaking the bank. Ep 043: Social media has become ingrained in our lives. Although people complain about it, make fun of it, and generally act like they don't care, the fact is...they do. Most of us engage in one way or another, choosing to put up with a considerable amount of negativity, drama, and nonsense to experience the positive side of the interaction - approval. We all seek it. We love the hearts, thumbs up, and comments. It makes us feel validated. Recently, I discovered an app for outdoor lovers that checks all of these boxes, and leaves the negatives behind. It is called the Go Wild App. The Go Wild App has the typical features that we are accustomed to on social media - photo uploads, likes, comments, etc. It also has some additional options such as a thumbs down and the ability to log time spent in the field. As one tracks their time, they begin to accumulate points on their profile. Different weight is given for degree of difficulty in the activity, making for a fun and unique experience when using the app. I really enjoy the recipe section as well. Since talking with Brad Lutrell, founder of Go Wild, I have been using the app on my iPhone, and I have really been enjoying it. I continue to learn more things that I can do with it, and I think it is going to be a valuable tool for men and women who love the outdoors. 042: Maple Syrup Making There's just something special about shopping at God's grocery store. When you gather something from the land and prepare it without additives, preservatives or chemicals, a feeling of satisfaction is sure to follow. There is literally something available every month of the year if we look for it. In February, this item is often maple syrup, or more specifically, maple sap. The syrup comes after some cooking. As is often the case with our outdoor pursuits, weather is a major component. In late winter, when the daytime temperatures get above freezing, but nighttime values are well below thirty two degrees, the sap will begin running. When there is a stretch of several consecutive days with these temperature splits in the forecast, I gather my tree tapping tools. Since I do things the redneck way, my tools consist only of my cordless drill, baling wire, 5/16 plastic tubing, 3/8" drill bit, and gallon water jugs. The podcast this week will cover my entire process of tapping the trees, collecting the sap, and cooking it into syrup. We will also talk about tapping walnut trees and some of the benefits of preparing the syrup on a wood stove. 041: Ice Fishing Basics: Cabin fever is real. Every year after the excitement of Christmas begins to wane, I find myself craving adventure. The outdoors always draws me back to it regardless of the weather conditions or my circumstances. This year has been no exception. Although we have had a healthy dose of winter this time, with temperatures flirting with the zero degree mark, I have been unable and unwilling to stay cooped up in the house. Since deer season was over and there were few other hunting options, I decided to try my hand at ice fishing. I didn't have the right equipment, so I did what I normally do - improvise with a redneck hack. I had no ice auger, so I used a hand mattock to chop a hole in the ice. This worked pretty well, but I was concerned that I had scared the fish in the process. I had no ice fishing tackle, so I just used a short dock rod and my regular tube jigs. I did tip them with wax worms. This is the one common thread to all the ice fishing tips and tricks that I had researched. When you mention ice fishing, it doesn't take long for someone to come up with a story of someone they know who has recently caught a whole bucketful of hand size slabs. Usually it sounds like they had a real easy time of it - spending a couple hours to catch 40 or 50. I have the same experience during deer season. Someone will always tell you about all the deer they are seeing, and act perplexed and shocked if you aren't seeing any. I think this is because only the highlight reels get shared with people. I realize that there are plenty of times when people get skunked, and also success stories tend to get embellished. In any case, my experience with ice fishing was slow slow slow! I made many holes of varying depths in different spots, but I was unable to find any fish. I figured I was using the wrong equipment, the wrong techniques, or both. I decided to ask an expert.
