In episode #2 of this series, we noted that researchers have discovered that injury takes place at speeds as low at 2.5 to 5 miles an hour. So if your bumper is damaged at all your collision involved speeds in excess of 15 mph. That’s 3 to 6 times the human threshold for injury.
In a low-speed collision, the kinetic forces that are transferred from the other vehicle into your vehicle are not dampened or bled off by your bumper. Instead, the force is transmitted through the vehicle, into your seat, and to your spine, resulting in injury.

When a vehicle collides with a fixed barrier at a low speed, the vehicle is going to lose, always. This only makes sense. At low speeds, a fixed barrier isn't going to move or absorb any of the collision energy. So all of the energy is put into the vehicle, resulting in greater damage at lower speeds.
In a vehicle to vehicle crash, where the bumpers line up well and energy is transferred into both vehicles, it takes considerably more force to cause visible bumper damage than a 5 mph collision.
Remember there is no connection between speed, vehicle damage and occupant injury in low-speed collisions.

Today we're going to look at three different studies that showed the mechanism of neck injury in a rear impact car accident.
Researchers found within fractions of a second after the impact the neck deformed into an S- shape. It happens so fast that there was nothing a person could do to protect themselves. Probably the most significant finding was that all of this happened at speeds as low as 2.5 miles per hour. Researchers radiographically proved that the human threshold for injury in a rear impact auto accident is 2.5 mph. Other authors have disputed these figures and some insurance company sponsored studies have found the threshold to be closer to 5 mph.

The purpose of this study was to find out if there is any association between seat belt use and other injuries.
Here’s what they found: seat belt use significantly reduced traumatic brain injury. Ten percent of those who were included in this study and did not wear their seat belt experienced a traumatic brain injury, while only four percent of those who did wear their seat belt experienced the same traumatic brain injuries.
Those who did wear their seat belt experienced greater spine injuries, thirty-five percent of the cases, while those who did not wear their seat belt only experienced spine injury in just under eighteen percent of the cases.

A typical car weighs about 2,000 pounds, so a collision at 10 miles per hour will result in an average impact force of about 3.7 tons. A larger vehicle of about 3,000 pounds, colliding at 10 miles per hour, will produce an average impact force of about 5.6 tons, a significant blow to an occupant’s neck and back.
