The furry fandom is one of the most popular fandoms that one can be a part of. However, members often get a bad rap and, let's be honest, furries are pretty weird. But things that are weird deserve to be explained. Welcome to Furry, Explained, a show for new and old furries alike, and especially for those who are curious about the fandom. Join Finn each week for a detailed breakdown on a topic related to the furry fandom with the goal of explaining furries: one of the most unique, but misunderstood groups of people that you'll ever encounter. New episodes release every Tuesday wherever you get your podcasts.
This week, we're going over the definition of "furry merch" and how the idea of merchandise bought and sold for the furry fandom has expanded. Then Finn dives deeper into his thoughts on mailing furry convention badges to help make the lines at convention registration shorter, including if the idea is even viable at all!

The end goal for a vast majority of members of the furry fandom is to make friends with their fellow fandom members. But trying to make friends in any social space is difficult and since the journey is different for everyone, trying to make a guide for any furry to follow to make friends is quite futile. One of the finer details about being a part of the furry fandom involves quite a lot of world building. Furries come up with complex and detailed characters or fursonas and use them to interact with them in what is essentially an entirely fan-created universe filled with anthropomorphic animals. It's no surprise then that you might think of furries just being a bunch of specialized role-players, and while that is true on the surface, how furries truly interact with one another create much more "real" experiences than you might think.

Furries, undoubtedly, have a certain love for animals that is a bit more than the average person. They go so far as to design entire personalities that encompass who they are as an anthropomorphic animal, and use that personality as their entire identity in the context of the fandom. However, they still know at the end of the day they are humans, and that their "animalistic" side of them is seperate from their person. However, there are some people out there that may be part of the furry fandom that do believe they are made up of part human, part animal. It's similar enough to where these individuals, called therians, are often confused with furries themselves, and on this episode, we explain what the differences between the two groups are!

A topic that comes up for discussion by people both in and out of the furry fandom is centered around the line that the fandom draws between how much "human" and how much "animal" should be represented in a fursona. There's a variety of different opinions and there are good reasons on both sides of that line as to why being more on one respective side is best. It's a fun topic, one we're going to be exploring for the next few weeks. And we're starting off by looking at the least "controversial" realization of this idea: the existence of realistic fursuits! While they may be simple to understand, they can tell us a lot about the fandom's overall position on that line while still being as cute and fun to talk about as fursuits are.

One of the best parts about the concept of fursonas in the furry fandom is that everyone one of them is unique. They each have their own story to tell about their owner, and allows everyone to represent themselves as an anthropomorphic animal in their own way. Many furries like to keep a separation between their real life and their life pretending to be an anthropomorphic animal. Because of this, most furs don't make it obvious that they're a furry out in public, with the farthest they'll go being wearing some discreet furry merch, which only other furs would recognize as part of the fandom. But some forgo this caution, and are loud and proud about being a furry, and don't mind letting others know about it. We've discussed at length how important our fursonas are. They act as more than fun characters; in many cases they take the role of being our entire identity in the furry fandom. But, unlike our real human identities, they are much less bound to physical traits, traits that are hard to change or can't change at all. Instead, our fursonas are much more dynamic and connect to similarly dynamic aspects about ourselves, or in other words, things that can change. The primary reason why furries may want to get a fursuit is to perform in one in front of others. But in a majority of those cases, these performances are conducted at places like furry conventions, meetups, or other areas where being in a large animal costume isn't out of the ordinary. But a lot of fursuiters don't limit their performances to just furry spaces; many take their suits out into the general public in an effort to surprise and delight those who may have never seen a fursuit before, in an effort to show the pubic a little bit of what this fandom has to offer! One of the more common themes that tends to come up on this regards the fact that being a furry can be expensive! And there's few better examples of the cost of being a member of the fandom than furry conventions. For a lot of members, this is one of if not the most expensive thing they participate in while being a furry, but it's not uncommon for furs to look at their bank statement after attending one and wonder "where did all that money go?" On this episode, we explain the answer to that inquiry, and explain the reasons why furry conventions can be expensive to go to! One of the most fun things that furries do is create and design their fursonas! Not only is it just an amusing challenge, it's also an important one, as the fursona that one has in the fandom acts as their identity as a furry, and therefore is how everyone else in the fandom preceives of them! Because of this, it can be worth taking some time ensuring that the design of a fursona is done with some care. In Part 3 of the Mature Series, we investigate why so many furries also happen to be members of the LBGTQIA+ community. An overwhelming majority of furries identify as something other than straight, making it one of the very few communities where that is the case. Fur and Loathing, an episode of the crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, featured members of the furry fandom as sexual deviants who think that deep inside, they actually are animals. This inaccurate view of the fandom was shown to millions of viewers in 2003, and on today's episode, we break down what exactly happened in that episode of CSI and how it's falsified view of furries specifically targeted and damaged the the image of the more adult side of the furry fandom.
