Takeaways

A hunting dog can greatly enhance the hunting experience and make you a better student of the species and the hunt. Getting started in hunting is simple - just grab some shells and a shotgun and go for a walk. It may be challenging at first, but it's a rewarding experience. October is a special time for hunting, and spending time in the woods during this month is highly recommended. Hunting in December can be tough, but it offers the opportunity to hunt when the birds are grouped back up again. Hunting in the snow presents its own challenges, but it can also be a unique and enjoyable experience. Arizona is a popular destination for hunting quail, and the desert birds provide a different hunting experience. Pheasant Fest is a great event for hunters to connect with others and learn more about hunting. Chicago can be a challenging city to navigate, and the Northwoods offer a more peaceful and enjoyable hunting experience. Planning future hunting trips and exploring new hunting spots is an exciting part of being a hunter.

High School Shooting sports are at risk of funding. I think most folks don’t understand this issue at its core. Now coming to light are some of the most outrageous overreaches which should wake people up. The Biden administration not only is pushing to defund one of the fastest growing High-School sports, shooting sports. They are trying to defund Archery and Hunters Education. Weak minded Republicans are also to blame for this mess due to a bill comprising the issue which is now being misinterpreted to defund these activities. Mark also shares some insight into his recent co-authoring of an article in a wildlife biology journal. This publication was in rebuttal to a group of quail biologists who claimed that Bobwhites would be better off today if they were included in the migratory bird treaty act. Mark brings up some interesting points in the debate and shares more about the publication.

Audio Quailty Warning - Zencastr FAILED and Brad had to call into the studio. Our phone call was poorer audio than Brian expects. He apologizes for this show not meeting normal standards from guest audio quality perspective. However, the conversation is too good to not to air.

Data collection - we are all aware of it. Most of us probably acknowledge our privacy is invaded daily but give in to the modern world without much caution. Brian is guilty as charged. He definitely has a love hate relationship with technology and its dark side. Have you wondered - should I give the Feds the real numbers or just make them up? In all seriousness, Brian as been there. Why do I have to give how many birds I hunted last year (goose, ducks, woodcock, ext.). I had a good season last year - We ate a lot of woodcock. Am I going to draw attention from a Warden if I answer that I harvested 20 woodcock last year? These thoughts I'm sure have crossed your mind as the clerk behind the license machine asks those HIP Certification questions. Brian and Brad clear the air on HIP. What the data is used for. How submitting information helps hunter opportunity and proper management tools. Even more, How this data helps protect our hunting heritage from encroachments by other governmental agencies.

Brad Bortner' s Background. Brad spend an extensive amount of his career working for United States Fish and Wildlife Service. After many different roles around Migratory birds he was promoted in 2011 to the Chief for the Division of Migratory Bird Management. THE GUY for all things migratory at USFW. During his tenure, Brad played an vital role implementing the collection and analyzation of data. After sometime the HIP Certification was formally launched as a tool for USFW to understand real harvest and success rates of hunters. This information has been paramount in setting regulations and implementing changes to waterfowl and migratory birds species. The data has impacted our populations, habitat, and opportunity to recreate immensely.

Brian has an in studio guest for a great conversation regarding some of the under appreciated fish that get little attention. Drew has been angling for Redhorse, gar, bowfin, and other species the state of Minnesota regulates as "rough fish." Drew and his brother started www.roughfish.com in 2000 to promote and change public opinion on these fish. With some public opinion changing, Minnesota is also proposing with a new bill (No Junk Fish Bill) to list and regulate these species separately. The debate around game and non-game species has been going on for a long time. Today, the Sportfishing Restoration act provides federal funds to game fish species. The non game fish are left out. Getting this bill passed will provide more options, funding, and tools to fisheries managers in Minnesota. This is HUGE because these fish have a symbiotic relationship with our game species. Furthermore, they are NATIVE to our waters. Giving the future at stake, managing ALL fish is important. There are native fish that are categorized by "rough fish" that are endangered or threatened. Visit www.roughfish.com Follow Drew on Instagram Visit the Facebook page for Roughfish.

Brian takes the podcast on the road this week to a special location on the banks of the Chippewa River. In an old northern WI bar that was originally opened in 1929 resides a custom rod builder. The nostalgia only makes a musky guy's, like Brian, stomach fill with butterflies. Looking at the legendary Chippewa River while discussing the "outlaw" fly fisherman who pursue musky, Tom and Brian, discuss the history that lead to the Predator Fly rod.

Brian bellies up to the historic bar (rods on the right and beer coolers on the left) to interview the owner and builder of Chippewa River Custom Rods. Tom packed his bags at 31 and moved over to northern Wisconsin with Musky guide Brad Bohen. Tom was one of the early pioneers to run drift boats on WI rivers to chase musky on the fly. Tom started building custom rods at age ten. Then shortly after moving to Wisconsin, he started Chippewa River Custom Rod. He also went to work for St Croix as an at-home wrapper for a couple of years. Last November he closed the doors to the old tavern and move rod production in. The Robert Tomes book Musky on the Fly is one of the earliest mentions of Tom's rods.

Chippewa River Custom Rod is the only company offering a one-piece fly rod dedicated to musky. Brian had a chance to cast a few of these one-of-a-kind fly rods. This rod is the only fly rod that uses full ceramic guides on all guides. NO SNAKE GUIDES.

Chippewa River Customer Rod Co manufactures a full line of conventional rods from small ice fishing rods to fully custom. Tom also offers 2wt - 12wt fly rods that are one-piece, two-piece, or 4 pieces. They are a fully customizable shop with a very very very quick turnaround time.  If you don't see what you are looking for on Custom River Custom Rods - call Tom! Please make sure to remind him that Amaazen Outdoors sent you to get 10% off on your order.
