As the recent tragic events in Houston show us, unruly crowds can be dangerous, even deadly. How do you create a safe space for a huge gathering of people, each with different goals, as well as different emotional and mental states? How do you build out a temporary space that is easy to navigate in moments of crisis? How do you deal with a restive crowd?
We don’t have all the answers about why Houston’s crowd reacted this way. At ARCUS we work with the production teams and Local Law Enforcement to create plans just as they did in Houston. Our hope is everyone can execute the plan accordingly in time of crisis.
The most visible components of security are personnel and hardware, but those are just aspects of a larger story. The right mindset is also a huge contributing factor to successful security outcomes. Successful crowd control is more nuanced than you might think. It requires constant observation and quick judgement. Its success also requires subtlety: often times successful crowd control is about how little anyone notices you doing your job. In this episode, we sit down with Garry McCarthy, former Superintendent of Police for the City of Chicago. Over the course of his career, Garry has brought order to major crowd control events, including the streets of New York immediately after the tragedy of 9/11. Mr. McCarthy shares insights into the behavior of crowds earned from decades in the field. You’re not going to want to miss this one.
