Vince Lombardi had a philosophy that every year his teams would go back to the basics before they did anything else. In order to understand the advanced things we need to have a firm gras on the basic things. This can be true in all facet of life, including our faith walk. As we begin a new year, let’s go back to the basics. This month we will be studying Acts 2:42-46. The most basic thing we can focus on is our walk with Christ. Today we look at who Christ is and what He came to earth to do.

We live in a distraction filled world. There are so many different things vying for our attention. We have a goal that we need to be focused on, sharing the love of Christ. Could you imagine a world where the disciples were distracted to spread that message? The church would never exist today. Let's talk about it on this week's Monday morning moment.
It feels so good to be back! It feels like the church is splitting at the seams. There are so many reasons why. Today, let's talk about one shall we? Jesus isn't the messiah. Hopefully, that statement made you shake with anger, but this is something that is being taught in churches across the country. As we prepare for Holy Week, let's hear what Jesus himself had to say about whether or not He is the Messiah.

Did you know, that within you is a battle. It's a battle that is as old as time. It is a battle that begins when we are born and doesn't end until we die. What is this battle? Find out on this mornings Monday Morning Moment.

"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”[c]
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."
James 4:1-10

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness."

It seems like we tend to glorify those who say the things that we are thinking. Is that how we should be though? OUr words that we speak are important, they have the power to construct people or destruct them. Hear hat James has to say about our words in this weeks Monday Morning Moment.
“For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.” James 3:7-12

We spend a lot of time and energy trying to build up an outward appearance that will impress people. The only problem is that these appearances begin to mask who were really are. James, the brother of Jesus, actually had something to say about this in his letter found in the Bible.
"Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:26 - 27

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do." James 1:2-8

Doulos is a street punk band from Riverside, California. Their debut release “The Middleman” was released in January 2021. Melding hardcore punk and metal, the band ha created a unique sound reflecting their early beginnings as a car club filled with low riders and rat rods, cholos and punk rockers. The band is unafraid to express their Faith but also their personal shortcomings, genuinely reflecting the challenges and trials of life.

When we do go back to the new normal, more than likely we will go back to the craziness that is our day-to-day lives. What about Sunday’s though? In another time they were held to be a sacred sabbath day, but some people felt it was just another day of the week. What about those people who must work on Sunday’s are they just doomed to never have a sacred sabbath again? It’s your morning moment.

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

The study of genealogy has become an immensely popular hobby. While people are studying their family history, have you thought about studying your spiritual genealogy? Why is it so important? It’s your morning moment.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

When God calls, who do you turn to for guidance? A calling that God places on our lives can be scary but if we have the right people in our lives, we can find the comfort, guidance, and wisdom we need to take the step of faith. It’s your morning meditation for Sunday 12/6, the second Sunday of Advent.
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 4Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

Do you feel that God is calling you to step outside of your comfort zone? Is he asking you to give of your time, treasure, and talents? Sometimes this requires us to take a huge leap of faith. This morning we look at how God’s call on a 13 year old girl would change the course of history forever.
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
