Thank you for tuning in to another episode of the Better Prescription with Dr. Minni Malhotra. During today’s conversation, we explore the importance of mitochondrial health. We start with the foundation of how the body converts organic compounds from our food into chemical energy using mitochondria. Learn about the stress associated with the level of energy our mitochondria generate from growth and how the resulting free radicals can accelerate aging. You’ll hear how health intelligence tests use mitochondrial regeneration to measure mitochondrial health and find out how mitochondria send signals when cells are not operational in a process called apoptosis. We discuss a few theories about the byproducts of cellular activity and explore why free radicals alone cannot explain the aging process before unpacking the role of mtDNA and discussing Toren Finkel’s theory about mitochondrial dysfunction. Finally, we talk about the implications of mitochondrial and cellular health on human wellness, with urolithin A at the center. Dr. Malhotra uses cellular health to help her patients go from sick and tired to wellness and vitality. Join us today to hear more.

Welcome to another episode of The Better Prescription where we give you the tools to help guide you to a natural root-cause approach to prevent disease, and even reverse it, if it’s not too advanced. During today’s conversation, we talk about organic and non-organic meat and produce, particularly as it pertains to nutrient content and the effect on human health. The diagnostic approach taken by a functional medicine doctor is multifaceted and can often be the determining factor in what sets a patient back onto a path of wellness. In today’s episode, Dr. Minni proves the truth of this statement by telling the story of a patient of hers who had been on a keto diet but bizarrely still had very high cholesterol levels. Dr. Minni explains the process of taking a deep dive into the patient’s history, looking at many factors that could be increasing his cholesterol or promoting his insulin resistance. The bulk of today’s episode is spent detailing the many different tests that were conducted on the patient, the imbalances they revealed, and the consequences of these for the patient as far as nutrition and wellness. Ultimately what it all points toward is that the patient had a body type that could not break down fat properly, meaning the keto diet, which usually does a good job of preventing insulin-resistant diseases, was in fact a poor fit for him. Hence the main lesson from today is that that the maintenance of good health cannot take a one-size-fits-all method, and this observation is all thanks to functional medicine. Tune in and hear the full story!

Key Points From This Episode:

  • A medical case involving a man who had been fasting but could not alleviate his high cholesterol.
  • The approach Dr. Minni took to diagnosing the patient by looking at his history.
  • Three things that have to happen for a disease to progress.

  • How the presence of high lactic acid quantities produces inflammation.
  • The many different tests that were conducted and the imbalances they revealed.
  • Finding that the keto diet the patient was on was causing more harm than benefit.
  • While the keto diet does well to prevent insulin-resistant diseases, it does not work for everybody.
  • The many different variables that a functional medicine approach takes into consideration.
  • A new diet prescription given by Dr. Minni and the wondrous effects it had.

Back pain is the sixth most expensive medical condition in the United States, with over 16 million adults reporting to experience chronic or persistent back pain. Those who suffer from back pain are more likely to use healthcare services than those without. Despite the prevalence of this condition, conventional medicine only has tools to help people to manage their pain, rather than get to the root cause and eliminate it. Chiropractic is often considered a controversial alternative medicine practice, yet it takes a holistic approach to treat pain that achieves results time and again. Dr. Dustin Etemadi is a chiropractor who specializes in non-surgical spinal decompression, and he takes a holistic approach to muscular-skeletal conditions. He treats patients of all ages and is located in Panther Creek Village in the Woodlands. In today’s episode, Dustin sheds light on the chiropractic approach to pain, and how chiropractors view the body and its interconnectivity. Much like functional medicine doctors, chiropractors understand that underneath a symptom is an underlying cause that needs to be treated. We hear about what happens when you leave problems untreated, why there is a divide between chiropractic and conventional medicine, and the danger of inflammation. Dustin stresses just how important it is to ensure your body is not inflamed so that it can do its job and heal itself. Tune in for this insightful conversation.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Pain is one of the most common complaints that patients have.
  • An example of how pain can overtake your life and cause limited functionality.

Welcome to The Better Prescription, a podcast where we will discuss functional medicine, root cause medicine, and alternative, natural paths to healing without prescription medicine. The conventional model of care is increasingly about disease management rather than root cause treatment, with insurance companies and big pharma dictating patient care. As a result, doctors are becoming burnt out, and patients are disempowered. This podcast seeks to show that a better prescription is possible when patients and doctors work as a team to treat the underlying causes of diseases. People are complex and health is influenced by so many factors. As such, a functional, holistic approach meets them where they are and treats them in their unique situations. We are so excited for you to join us on this journey where we explore care beyond medicine.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Insights into what a prescription is and the many parts it is comprised of.
  • Today's model of care is a disease management system, which does not look at root causes.
  • The impact that insurance companies and big pharma have on patient treatment.
  • What it means to work towards a better prescription.
  • How the functional medicine approach works and why it leads to improved outcomes.
  • Dr. Malhotra’s unique COPE methodology and how it works.
  • What the purpose of this podcast is; to show there is a different medical model.
  • The shifts Dr. Malhotra saw when she moved from conventional to functional medicine.

Tweetables:

“Practicing medicine is also an art which requires knowledge, compassion, and empathy.” — Dr. Minni Malhotra [0:00:46]

“We are looking for the better prescription; one that has a better understanding of the disease, one that can allow patients to be a partner in their care, one that can educate patients, one that can truly diagnose an imbalance before it turns into a disease, one that can train a position to be a coach, one that provides a roadmap to healing rather than treating, one that can offer a solution rather than putting a Band-Aid.” — Dr. Minni Malhotra [0:02:30]

“By addressing the root cause, rather than the symptoms, the practitioner becomes oriented to identifying the complexity of the disease.” — Dr. Minni Malhotra [0:03:47]

“The purpose of this podcast is actually, to help my listeners understand that there is a better way of taking care of your health, away from pills and procedures.” — Dr. Minni Malhotra [0:05:47]
