The melding of creativity was always a fun aspect of ADHD for me. I could take music and art to understand math or science. Then again I might use colors to understand history or math. I hated math, but I was good at it. I love writing/english, but I was told I wrote as I spoke. That could be an issue in the future the teacher said until one day he came to hear me speak and said don’t ever change what you do.

There were a few people who differed with my opinion about ADHD and it being a learning disability. Of course, my comments are my opinion, not the opinion of many, but I still go with my take on things. Also wanted to touch base on ADHD and seniors after hearing from a listener who is a senior.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about neurodivergent and neurodiversity and I keep reading that people feel ADHD is a learning disability. When I was a kid and my parents sat me down to explain ADHD or Hyperkinetic disorder as it was called back then they told me that I had an enhancement to learning due to Hyper Kinetic not a disability. They explaining anyone who stated I had a learning disability had the disability, not me. Listen in.

Jimmy Buffett has a song that made a great deal of sense to me when I first heard it titled Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. For me using visualization to help with anxiety and those trying creative moments living with ADHD, things were easier to deal with the first time I heard that song. It reminded me of my visualization techniques only in real life. I loved the ocean or, for that matter, any body of water that made me feel good. Living in New York City, I also loved just taking long walks. I would get out of the office and walk, sometimes longer than expected, so I could reach the Hudson river. I needed the water to calm me down. Changes in Latitudes or Longitudes worked for me. Try it.

Is there a dark side or downside to ADHD? I wouldn't call it a dark side or downside. It's more like an ultra-creative side. By that, I mean when so much creativity enters your brain at once, and you can't figure it out, frustration becomes the answer. You may even buildup some anxiety or go as far as being depressed. Too much creativity can hurt, but you don't want to lose all that creativity.

We don't have to qualify our ADHD, OCD, or other issues we deal with. All we have to qualify is our life and what makes it great. It may sound easy, but it isn't always that way. The thing is we need to remember we don't have to qualify the issues we deal with in life, just our life in general.

I think everyone at one time or another has been asked, what do you want to be when you grow up? It comes with the territory of being a kid, right! I was asked that repeatedly over the years by everyone, then one day, I was asked, what do you want to do in the future? I was perplexed, to say the least. I figured what I wanted to be was the same as what I wanted to do. I learned differently over the years.

Sometimes I'm at a loss for words and topics. It doesn't happen often, but it does. I had a topic today that I wasn't sure I wanted to talk about, but it felt like it was the right time to do so. Given that I do this show without knowing the ages of listeners, I worry about age-related topics. Then I remember that most of my stuff can be for any age. I brought that up today when I thought about what I would tell my younger self if I could about living with ADHD. A Topic I'll be talking more about in the coming shows.

Creativity isn't just being an artist or musician. It isn't just being a singer or dancer. Creativity is that and more. Being a CPA can be creative, but you have to see it that way. Support from friends, family and even enemies once in a while is something we want and need. It may be for something easy or hard, but we like that support, don't we? We look for it when it isn't there, after having it for so long. We miss it. We long for it, and we want it. We need to know that even without the support we expect, we can do what we set out to do. It may be harder without our support, but it is possible. Try it sometime.

Death and taxes are real, as they say. You can't hide or run away from either. However, you could run away from taxes if you found a country that won't extradite you back to the US. Anyway, ideas come quickly, and many times we procrastinate. Why? A dream is a project waiting to happen. It's waiting for you to make it happen by posting it out there. By investing in it either with your heart and soul or money if you have it. We often wait to start or share our dream, and then, due to an act of God, we can't do that. I say do that now. Make that dream you had this morning or whenever it happened.

I love doing this podcast. It helps me get centered with my life and everything going on. Since you're a  listener, I spend a great deal of time, actually all of the time, talking about myself. Aren't you tired of that? For me, it's therapeutic, but what about you? Don't you want something different? Do you want to stop talking about my stuff? Do you want me to shut the podcast down? Has it gone on too long? I'm open to your suggestions, so hit me up at markjohn1@mac.com or click here.

I don't get it. In fact, I don't want to get it. Every day I hear of more mental health issues being attributed to ADHD, and it bothers me that all of these issues can be lumped together. I guess anything is possible, but when did it become okay to keep stockpiling this stuff together. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know at markjohn1@mac.com or click here.

There are no special tricks or tips when dealing with the ups and downs of ADHD. It's all about you and how you need to deal with them as they come up. The good thing is you have it within yourselves to deal with those emotions and come out for the better. Take the time to invest in your ADHD, it'll be worth it in the end.

I brought this up today because I see this issue as a world issue. I'll bet many adults/parents are having the same issue our daughter is having with her kids and their homework. For me, it's a personal issue that I feel others are going through also. So that makes it a world issue. So how do you handle it when the kids refuse to do homework?

As you know, this podcast is all about ADHD, and it's entirely about how I work things out with ADHD. I also talk about Patti and how she works out her thoughts with ADHD, but I tend to stick to my working thoughts since I know them better. The one thing I haven't talked about is current events and how they affect my ADHD and possibly yours. So for the following few podcasts, we're going to tackle some current events and their effect on us.  Here's our address: markjohn1@mac.com.  Write and let us know your thoughts!!!

I'm not too fond of drugs. I don't think ADHD always warrants taking drugs even though Doctors state the drugs are safe. I took them for one-year years ago, and at the end of the year, I was a zombie. My parents took me off them, and I've never been on them since. That doesn't mean some people need them. Today's drugs are better than the ones from years ago but don't think they aren't mind-altering.

Fear is a real thing, and it's something we shouldn't be afraid to deal with in our lives. Fear can play a role in all aspects of our lives, but it's how we deal with it that's important. Avoiding our fears is the worst thing we can do. We need to confront, accept and deal with our fears in our own way.

It isn't just Mondays. It happens each day that priorities take precedent over our creative thinking. We live and breathe creativity, but life dictates that priorities come first. Is that a bad thing? Of course not; that's life. It's just a hurdle in our day, and it's something not to lose sleep over.

There are no easy answers. Be cautious if someone tells you that they can help you stop negative thoughts. Yes, there are tricks out there, but they don't always work for you as they do for the other person. I've said this a bunch of times, we are individuals, and we need to find our way of fixing ourselves. Books and experts can help give ideas, but in the end, it is up to us to heal ourselves.

I can honestly say I am great at conning myself into thinking I will remember that great idea I had at 3:31 in the morning on a Thursday. I will completely believe in myself that I will remember that thought later in the day. Of course, it's a con most of the time because with ADHD, there is so much going on in that brain of mine that that great idea flew out the window, and unless another thing like a video or blog post happens to trigger that idea again, it's gone for good. At least most of the time. Does that make it a bad thing? Nope. It's just like with ADHD.

Coaching and coaches are two things that bother me for several reasons. First off, I see coaching as a tool for others. I want to be able to coach a person so that they can be their coach. I believe everyone can coach themselves. They just have to learn how.  It takes some understanding to get there, but it's possible. I've done it for some in the past. What I don't agree with is the business side of coaching. It's like a therapist. They want to help you, but only so far. They need you to keep coming back so they can stay in business. Coaching and coaches are the same things. There is no business without you, so they give you only what they want, not what you need. Listen to today's podcast for my take on this business and the people who are in it.

Our brains are amazing, aren't they? We can have 100 ideas and concepts running around our brain, and if we take the time, we can talk, elaborate, justify, and conceptualize each of them altogether. Then again, maybe we break them down one at a time, but we can do it. ADHD is a fantastic thing. It lets us see into more than we thought. We can think about more thoughts at one time than most others. What's truly amazing is it's something we don't always realize is we can help others do the same. We can help those who don't have ADHD but have rambling thoughts and don't know how to handle them. WE CAN HELP!

Is there a difference between speaking to an audience rather than speaking with an audience? You bet there is and it does make a difference at the end of the day. Speaking to an audience is great in building your reputation as an expert in a field. It also places you on top as the expert in the room so to speak on whatever topic you're speaking about. But speaking to an audience instead of speaking with an audience can turn on you. Don't you want the audience to like you? Don't you want them to listen and learn? Quitting is part of life and business. It doesn't matter that we quit as long as we know inside it was the right decision at the right time. There are days when quitting is the easiest way out. Quitting is easy. It's fast. It's life-changing, and it's doable. However, what you have to consider is, is it the right time and reason to quit? Those two questions should be first to consider. Time and Reason! If you've done everything you can to make an idea successful in the time you've allotted been given, and it isn't, then that answers time. It's the reason you come up with for quitting that makes the final decision in my book. Time is just that time. The reason is more about self and interest. Listen in for more.

Maybe it's about bills that I know need to be paid before going to bills that will come in when we return home. Whatever it may be, it's frustrating.

That's right, it's Wednesday, humpday, and things around here are going that way. They aren't finished yet, but they are so close I can taste them. The thing is, ADHD is getting in my way, and I need to do something about it, which I did by talking to you guys today. Thanks for listening. I always appreciate our time. Friday's always gets me excited. Not that I don't have enough time to myself, but I am always thinking of ways to make the weekend more enjoyable and it takes all day Friday to come up with stuff. This Friday is special because of the weekend. This Sunday is the publication of our pop-up newsletter about food called A Food Above. Click that link and subscribe for the best in summer recipes for a very limited time. Once the summer is over so isn't the newsletter. The next time it'll be back is during the holidays. This year unlike many years prior, I am going to prepare myself for the stuff coming up. Stuff like school starting, holidays and family meals, and dealing with issues within the family to make the holidays happy. I know it sounds crazy to talk about this now, but this is the time to refresh your brain. Maybe even do a brain dump, so you're ready for what's coming. I'm just thinking about this now because I decided to be ready this year for what's about to come.

Habits versus routines. I've been asked what the difference is? Surprisingly there is a difference, and it's in your best interest to figure out your habits and routines. Then figure out their differences and how they affect your day and life. It may take a little bit to figure out the differences, but it'll all make sense when you do.

ADHD can get a little in the way when we have to fight the heat of the day. It doesn't happen to everyone, but it does happen to me, and I have found that refreshing my mind, body, and emotional feeling with something cold and enjoyable will help get things back on track. Give it a try if you're having one of those ADHD HEATED moments.

Sometimes you never think of how your actions will affect others until after the fact. That's the case with me not recording on Monday. It wasn't a holiday in the true sense of the word. Sunday was the holiday, and I don't record on Sunday, so I took advantage and enjoyed the day, but it did make me think. Listen in for my thoughts.

Over the weekend, my mind was on an idea about teaching the fundamentals of ADHD. In some ways, this podcast is a lesson in itself of the fundamentals I've come to know and use over the years. I don't teach per se on the podcast, but I do talk a lot about what I do. Would a more structured class on fundamentals be worthwhile, or should I keep doing what I do now? Let us know. I hear people all the time calling their work garbage. Whether it's a podcast or a blog, people out there believe that their creative efforts are garbage. There is nothing further from the truth. Success comes easy for some and hard for others, but I know that everyone who does become successful does the same thing. They work hard. Nothing is easy. A reader of our newsletter California Mishegoss mentioned in an email he was an ultramarathoner. That to me is the ultimate of getting clarity. I know for me back when I was younger skating was the key to clarity. Not just regular ice skating either. IT would have to be speed skating or hockey skating/practice. That gave me clarity. Swimming in the ocean worked pretty well also. I had all of that living back east. In Fresno, I use mental and emotional stuff for clarity. How about you?

I remember the day I went to the Doctor's to be checked out like it was yesterday. He didn't say much to me only asked me a ton of questions and talked to my parents behind closed doors. I'm not too fond of canned things. Things like speeches, projects, podcasts, and so on. What I mean by canned is pre-arranged lists or notes. A perfect example is a TO-DO list. I dislike TO-TO lists. I wanted to cover this topic one last time for the week since I received an email asking me some questions about the podcast yesterday. I didn't mean for you to attack ADHD. I know it may have sounded that way, but it's more about the project at hand. Use ADHD to help you attack the project to completion and then move on. It's the little things that count.

View Details

We all know how ADHD works. We know that at that crucial moment when we're working on a project, ADHD will interfere with some great ideas that don't pertain to what we're working on, but there is a way to make things work. Attacking is a term I use when I want my ADHD to work with me and not against me. I get up knowing what I have to attack and garner support from ADHD before I begin. Then we as a team go to work.
