Boss It Podcast: Recent Episodes

Sophia Syed

Hi All! All my name is Sophia! The aim of the podcast is to provide tangible advice for women entrepreneurs in areas of business, health and self-help. Each episode will have a few action items that the listener can apply if the episode resonated with them - hence the tag line "Make a plan, take action" . I'll give you my background in a nutshell: I am a registered physiotherapist in Canada but moved into leadership at a local hospital. Then went part-time as a manager at a publicly funded medical clinic, so I could grow my product based startup. This brand new biz landed into Walmart Canada last spring. A lot of ladies have been asking for help with their startup because they saw such fast growth of my product based company (the company name is Also Sophia) and so I thought a podcast would be a great way to reach a larger audience. Hope you enjoy!xoxo Sophia

Innovating your business means stepping up your game. Do you think that AI tools are the game-changer you need in 2023?

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is indeed a powerful tool, and the good news is that you can implement it into your business operations! Utilizing AI tools can boost your productivity as it can handle your tasks promptly, allowing you to move to your other strategic activities. This enables you to leverage your skills while spending less on the areas of your business operations that can be handled by AI tools.

Let me share with you my top 3 AI tools you need in 2023 to scale your business:

  1. Fireflies.ai - an AI note-taking tool that transcribes your entire meeting and put the notes succinctly into meeting notes. It will not just help you focus more on your meeting but will also allow you to take those notes and transform them into other forms of educational content.
  2. Open AI’s Chat GPT - an AI-powered natural language processing tool that can provide answers to your questions and help you with tasks like email composition. Personally, it has been helping me with idea generation and when writing lengthy letters.
  3. Shopify Inbox - a chatbot that acts as our customer service tool on our website, alsosophia.com. And it's great because if we're not available and a customer needs our service, it will respond on our behalf.

Would you describe yourself as a wantrepreneur? Or do you know someone who is a wantrepreneur?

The term "wantrepreneur" refers to someone who desires to create their own business but hasn't been able to get started. Wantrepreneurs have fresh and creative ideas but lack the courage to take action and risks. In this episode, we discuss the barriers that might hinder you in your transition from a wantrepreneur to an entrepreneur and the strategies that can help you avoid them.

Let me share with you why you might be stuck in the wantrepreneur stage:

  1. You find yourself fearful to either start your business or scale it to the next phase or the next big step. The best way to start conquering your fear is to write down the things that you're fearful of if you were to start your business or if you are deciding to take your business to the next level.
  2. You fear being judged by others. It’s important to understand that the reason they have something to say about you is that they're projecting their own insecurities about starting a business on you or they don’t have the ability to help you with this path in life that you've decided to take.
  3. You don’t know where to start. Do the right thing by seeking out podcasts and YouTube videos, mentors, and other resources to help you expedite your trajectory toward your goal.
  4. You lack capital or funding. Start your business with your own money first. Don't borrow money from others to experiment because you should be confident enough to use your own money to start.

Many of us mistakenly believe that starting a side hustle while juggling a nine-to-five job is impossible and that we cannot successfully manage both responsibilities at the same time. It is not necessary to burn the boats right away. Keeping your nine-to-five is vital, not just for supporting your business but also as a safety net in case your side hustle or business fails. It's better to have a side hustle than to jump all in when starting a business.

Let me share with you why you start the side hustle:

  1. Side hustles give you an extra income stream different from the one you get from your 9 to 5 job. Hence, even if you run into difficulties with your job, you won't completely lose your source of income.
  2. A side hustle will give you extra income to supplement your income as the cost of living has increased substantially!
  3. Start a side business in an area that piques your interest. You are given the opportunity to do something that brings you joy while also continuously relying on your main source of financial support. The extra income that you earned from a side hustle is just a bonus!

Progress is not always linear; there are times when we need to step back before striving again. Setbacks are a natural part of the process of our success. We need to grow, learn, and improve. So my mantra has always been "Two Steps Forward One Step Back." But how do I define this in the context of business?

  1. This mantra sets realistic expectations and maintains a mindset of making room for improvement.
  2. It helps in navigating the ups and downs of business with grace and strength.
  3. It makes us realize that setbacks are okay. Remember, business is a marathon, not a sprint. Take time to pace yourself and revel in the journey.

Passion is not enough in achieving success. You also need a productive mindset to help you set goals. But how do we cultivate that productive mindset? Let me share with you three strategies that can help in establishing success and optimizing our productivity.

1. Set up the night before. Planning the night before can help create a systemic routine for our day-to-day needs. When we plan ahead, we ensure that the things we need are ready and in place. Even the smallest details that are often overlooked can be properly attended by planning the night before.

2. Identify your priority to-do list and categorize what should be done for the day and the others that can be accomplished for the succeeding days. You cannot finish everything within a day, so it’s important to also schedule your tasks and see which can be accomplished in a short period of time and which needs more thorough work.

3. Assess the day you just had. Looking back on how your day went helps you to see an overview of the completed and missed tasks from your to-do list. This allows you to review your performance for the day and see what needs to be improved. Also, you may work on rescheduling your missed tasks and do the necessary adjustments needed to accomplish all your deliverables.

What are a few common pitfalls for entrepreneurs and how can you avoid them!

  1. Not Enough Money! Many first-time entrepreneurs will give up as they need capital to start their business and then a steady income to manage daily expenses. My suggestion is not to quit your stable income right away and start your business as a side hustle. I personally started Also Sophia.

  2. Afraid of Competition! Many quit or never start their business because they are scared of other businesses as competition. If you can reframe competition in business as a great way for you to refine your product or service to meet the challenge to solve your customer’s problem better than any other business, then business competition can be seen as a game. This will help improve the products offered by businesses and prevent monopolies.

  3. Afraid of Failure! Many do not start to give up as they are afraid to fail. If you can reframe to look at “failures” as lessons. Then, make sure you assess the “failure”. Was the goal too unrealistic and do you need a few smaller goals before the big goal? Or did you not set yourself up for success with resources? Look analytically at the “failure” and draw out the lessons.

  4. No Support! Feeling alone on the entrepreneurship journey can make it harder to navigate all the potential ups and downs if you do not have a supportive family or community. My suggestion is to find a group of like-minded individuals who will understand your drive to pursue a business. Remember, it may not be fair to your family and friends to support you if they do not have any experience in business and may feel overwhelmed by the risk. Remember, if you have a vision for your business, you have everything in your power to make it happen. And no one else can really tell you otherwise!

Increasing a company’s bottom line is arguably the most important metric!

Decreasing your Customer Acquisition Costs (CAC).... not rate (we want to increase the acquisition rate) is one great way of increasing profits! Here are the strategies that have worked for our product business.

  3. Create a community by involving your customer in product development, and invite them to be a part of the team as an affiliate. We love using the following apps that help us with creating a great community.

It’s January 2023 and it’s time to talk about goal setting! What is the significance to January 1st? It’s just any other date, right? Yes.. it is … but culturally, we have used the first of January as a starting point to frame our goals. Here are a few tips on how to make sure you set your goals up for success in 2023!

  1. Look to your North Star to guide you in your goal setting. What is the real reason you have committed to keeping your goal? It is helpful to align your goal with something other than money alone. Aligning your goal to an external cause will help keep you inspired to push forward when goals take longer to accomplish.
  2. Connect your goal to an already established routine. For example, if you want to take daily walks in 2023, the act of putting on your running shoes after your last daily meeting will help you move towards that goal of daily walks. Breaking down your goals into tangible single steps like putting on your running shoes, will help you move towards your goal. No schedule your small bit size steps into your day to bring you even closer to executing your goal!
  3. You will have days when you will need a break and may miss a day. Be kind to yourself and let yourself have some grace BUT get back on track! Tap into your North Star again and this will help propel you back into action. You should not let “getting off track” as an excuse to give up!

Business takes patience and the “get rich quick” mantras do not work. Sorry…even if you make a quick win, can you replicate it again? Remember business may look easier on the surface than many would like to admit to!

Here are a few tips to get you on the right track to help build your patience as you march through the entrepreneurial journey and not give up!

  1. Set expectations with yourself that the goal you have in mind might take longer to accomplish that you had previously thought. Remember, there are no “get rich quick” options and if someone is selling this rhetoric, they are likely trying to “get rich quick” off of you!
  2. Ask for help and delegate out tasks so you will not burn out on your entrepreneurial journey. Setting expectations with others as well, regarding delegated acts or boundaries will also help prevent you from burnout! This also applies to anyone who is working a traditional 9-5 too! How to Prioritize My To-Do List [AND Reduce The OVERWHELM]
  3. Tell those that you trust your big goals so you hold yourself accountable and start making micro steps consistently. I share an example from my personal story of telling close family and friends that I was intentional with our first product line getting into Walmart.

You do not need to quit your 9 to 5 and it is ok to complete a side hustle! Do you agree or disagree?

Why do I believe this? Well…

  1. Running a business is like completing a series of experiments. You do not know what will work and what will not work out. By allowing yourself to continue with your contingency plan of the 9 to 5, you are allowing yourself the opportunity to experiment with what you like and what you dislike, what will work and what will not work, without feeling too overwhelmed and stressed. A founder example is Phil Knight who owned and founded Nike. Go grab the book by Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike from Audible.
  2. Having a 9 to 5 job will allow you a stable income so you have less stress at the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey regarding cash flow. The reduced stress will allow you to become more creative in your business, as stress naturally hinders creativity and innovation. A stable income will also allow you to provide for your family and reduce the guilt that comes along for many when starting a new business.
  3. Working a 9 to 5 at the beginning stages of your side hustle will allow for decisions based on logic versus emotions, as cash flow will be more stable personally. You will not take on clients and customers that you did not hope for, and only provide products and services for your most ideal clients and customers.

If you can manage your time and energy, you can definitely start a side hustle while working 9 to 5 and still have time for family and friends! And then, when you’re ready and you know your side hustle can become the real deal… then burn the boats and jump all in!!

With so many dependents, time management is a skill that you can master!

As many of you know, I have a booming side hustle Also Sophia LTD (on Walmart shelves currently), working my 9-5 currently and yes, I am a MOM! I’m not telling you all of this to brag, but to give you context on why time management is so important for me to manage the time in my day.

Here are my best tips that you can put into action!

  1. Choose the best time to complete your deliverables that will align with your, energy level, attention, and creativity. For example, I will do high-priority deliverables that require a high level of attention between the hours of 10 am to 12 pm when my attention and energy are at the peak of the day. Segmenting your day will help you not only manage your time but also your energy level so you make the most out of the time that you have! “Remember, you own your calendar, your calendar doesn’t own you”.
  2. Segment the days of your week. Chuck out your daily theme for the day of the week to help you get into the daily flow. For those who work from home, this would help you manage the time on the road, by completing all in-person meetings in one day (if possible). For example, I have all external community meetings on Thursdays and all internal meetings on Tuesdays and Fridays. This leaves Mondays and Wednesdays as office/catch-up days.
  3. Do a Daily Shut Down, where you close your browser tabs, organize files, and take your inbox to ZERO! This will help you segment your day so your “work life” doesn’t run into your Home Life or social calendar. If there is an item that is not completed or a to-do that didn’t get completed, I schedule time for this item into my calendar!

How are you going to prevent your business from going under during the recession?

This episode will provide you with 4 tips that you can do today to help you float during the recession and not close your business doors!

  1. Product-Based Business - Look at cost of each product and the cost of goods (COG) to see if you can reduce these costs. For our service-based business- look at different contracts and see if you can bring a few services in-house that you might be outsourcing currently
  2. If you have a novel service or product, you can consider increasing the price of the product to increase the profit as right now you may have customer tolerance for increased prices due to inflation.
  3. Audit your subscriptions and delete unused subscriptions or downgrade your subscriptions. Do this for your business and personal as well!
  4. Follow the Predo’s Principle! A small amount of your input will result in a larger amount of your output! This means 20% of your products or services will lead to 80% of your profits. Figure out the most profitable products and spend your attention elevating those products and liquidate or stop offering the rest! For more on increasing profits in your business, you can head to episode 85 where we speak about how to create a brand that will lead to longer customer lifetime value https://www.bossitclub.com/85

Today let’s chat about the 3 C’s that every business owner should possess to better your mental health.

1st C - Consistency: It will take time to reach your goals and it is unlikely that you will find success overnight. If you do find success overnight, you are one of the few that will! Being consistent will allow you the time required to build a brand and community around your offer and this will result in better business success! One great strategy for accomplishing consistency is to establish small actionable goals.

2nd C - Curiosity: If you have the capacity to be curious about your business, you will be able to create and innovate in your business. Curiosity will also allow you to be more open-minded and willing to experiment. You will need to innovate in your business for your business to continue to evolve and level up so curiosity is essential!

3rd C - Compassion: Being compassionate towards yourselves and others is essential for your mental health. You will make mistakes in business and if you can remind yourself that you are human, not only will you feel at ease to take risks and show up consistently, your mental health will be stronger!

Time to get serious about leading your company.

Let’s speak about what a CEO is and then I’ll provide you with a few tips to take your mindset and execution to the next level as a CEO.

If you need more information regarding what is Governance and reporting to a board, you can check out this great article and video for a fast tutorial.

Tip 1- Learn to Delegate!

If you want more information on delegation you can check out episode 84 at bossitclub.com/84. In Also Sophia, my product-based company, I delegated out social media and product fulfillment early to ensure I had the energy and time to create and lead the company!

Tip 2 - Learn to take Risks!

You will be faced with many challenges while leading your business so you must be comfortable with the concept of taking on risks and trying no ideas out to manage the challenges. This is a business essential! Again with Also Sophia, I started taking on risks like taking on a Purchase Order for Walmart in our first 12 months. This risk was essential to growing our business.

Tip 3 - Exercise Your Confidence

Confidence is essential! Think about the internal dialogue that may be preventing you from your full expression of ourself. What is holding you back? Confidence is a very large topic and takes years of work. If you can fully embrace your confidence, there will be no stopping you from attaining your big goals!

Let’s speak about 2022 and our Walmart Launch onto the big shelf!

A few weeks ago a shared with you what happened in 2020 and 2021 when we launched our products on Walmart shelves in the middle of the pandemic. And let’s just say… it did not go as planned. The lockdown interrupted selling and we had to quickly pivot our sales strategy. If you missed these episodes, you can click the links below to catch each

What happened in 2020

What happened in 2021

Luckily 2022 was a little different and we didn’t have any COVID-related shopping restrictions!

Here are a few lessons I learned when working with a large retailer.

  1. Make sure you have a great promotion plan to help move the product off the shelf.
  2. Complete a postmortem or analysis of the launch or selling season. Ensure you document what worked and what didn’t work.
  3. Expect and plan for delays especially if you are shipping products from overseas. Even if you’re a service-based business and launching a new program, always ensure you are planning for delays and leaving “contingency” time aside.

So what happened in 2021 that may have wrecked our chances of ever being on the Walmart shelf again?

You will find some great lessons learned from our experience in 2021. Here are the lessons but I’m sure there are more.

  1. Always diversify your sales channels
  2. Build a community of faithful customers who will support you
  3. Always know your numbers so you plan for potential “risks and failures”
  4. Be ready to pivot and nimble so you can change the plan
  5. The better the packaging is aligned to the target audience, the more likely it will attract the customer

How do you manage your to-do list? Here are my best-kept secrets to keeping on top of my priorities stress-free and with less overwhelm!

I follow the 4D method for productivity and funny enough when I looked for more information regarding the 4D Productivity Method, I didn’t find much! Gathering this information from great productivity gurus, David Allen’s Book Getting Things Done, I’ve put my own personal spin so we all can relate to our daily demands!

Grab the book here so you can dive into the lessons even more!
Here’s the link:
https://amzn.to/3CpM3Fn

  1. Start with a Brain Dump Daily! Get everything out of your head and onto the paper.
  2. Next, prioritize the Brain Dump and assign one of the 4Ds.

What are the 4Ds?

  1. Do It - you need to do the To-Do so put it into your schedule or calendar. Schedule the task at the time you are the most productive!
  2. Delegate It - you will need to give a few tasks to others so they can manage it
  3. Deferring The Action- if you don’t have time to finish the task or item, then place the item in a Parking Lot
  4. Delete It - have a look at the To-do List and ensure that everything on that list is still required. Do you need to do everything still?

Pro Tip- Stay until the end to catch this one!!Remember to hit follow and the bell and we’ll catch you again next week!

How do you stop procrastinating?

There are two main reasons you could be procrastinating:

  1. The task is too easy and you are actually getting bored.
  2. The task is too complex and it’s causing you to feel anxious.

I have a few tricks to prevent procrastination in both situations.

If you are bored of the task, go ahead and couple it with something you love to do. For me, I will listen to a podcast or music and complete task such as laundry.

For a complex task, here are a few strategies you can try:

  1. Always start with the Minimum Viable Action - we chat about James Clear's book Atomic Habit which does explain this concept very well.
  2. Use the SMART Goal method  -Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relatable, and timely.  - check out more episodes regarding preventing procrastinating A Few of My Scheduling Life Hacks!
  3. Start a task for only 5 minutes and see if you can get into a “flow state”
  4. Reframe the task as a challenge rather than an obstacle

Now tell us in the comments… which 4 strategies will you use first to get out of the habit of procrastinating?

Remember, Make a Plan and Take Action and YES you can have it all!

What is the biggest mistake business owners make? Not knowing their customer! If you don’t know who you are serving in business, then you do not know who you are marketing to. You need to understand your customer’s pain point and if your product or service is actually solving the problem!

Here are a few tips on how to ensure you are creating the best product-market fit!

  1. Create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and test your product or service by offering it for SALE and collecting real money!
  2. Understand the psychographics of your customer to better align the sale of the product or service- A great example of this is how Mcdonald's appears to be selling food but they really are selling the convenience of getting a fast meal.

At the end of the show, I share with you on how I knew I nailed it with the product market fit for the Also Sophia products at Walmart. So stay until the end!

For a successful business, you need to focus on Money, Mindset, and Marketing! Today I share my thoughts on all three topics and why you need to ensure you’re focusing on all three at once!

Why do we want to focus on all three domains in business? Well if you don’t make money in your business, it’s not a business.

How do you make money? Well, you need to sell your product or service. Sales only can occur if the ideal client or customer knows about the product or service. This is wheremarketing comes into play.

Finally, the mindset of the business owner will always drive the business toward the ultimate vision and goal for the business. It is the owner’s psychology that will dictate the growth of the business. If you have any doubts, check out Jeff Bezos and his relentlessness towards Amazon’s ultimate goal!

So you might be thinking... “Ok… well what is the easiest way to market”. Currently, the answer is influencer marketing through social media! This is the best Return On your Investment (ROI).

Check out the free training here on how we made our product-based businesses Also Sophia blow up and hit Walmart shelves using Influencer Marketing -https://www.bossitclub.com/IMME

A few additional marketing options are collaborations and networking with other businesses.

Remember, lead with the mindset that your ultimate goal or vision for the company will happen, and you are more likely to make this true as you will have fewer inhibitions to pitch and sell your product!

Time for me to reveal a few of my scheduling life hacks! Trust me, if you asked my friends and family, they are surprised that I haven’t forgotten to pick up my kids from school with all of the responsibilities that I have going on. This episode will tell you how I keep myself organized!

  1. Check in with myself regularly - I know what time of the day I do my best work. For me, I work best between 10 am to 2 pm…ask yourself what time of the day best suits your energy rhythm. Are there specific times of the day that you are more creative and will it serve you and your business to save “creative time” in your schedule?
  2. Organize my schedule the night before - I literally sit down at night, before the next morning start, and ensure I have studied my calendar to understand what to expect regarding deliverables and meetings. I will take my digital calendar commitments and copy these into my paper agenda to prime and prep myself psychologically for the next day
  3. Block my schedule to complete deliverables each day. One deliverable is actually answering all my emails. I will only complete 3 big items each day. To qualify a task as one of the “big 3”, the item must take more than 30 minutes to complete and require a greater level of attention to execute. And if you’re a time optimist and underestimate the time it takes to complete a task, multiply the time by 2 when estimating your time block length. Head to episode 73 to learn more about time blocking or click the link here to listen.

We have been so used to blaming fear for our failures or our inability to start working on our goals. If this can greatly affect us, why don’t we use its effect positively? Instead of just letting it hinder us, why don’t we use it as a stepping stone to take action?

Today we speak to Shaleen about:

Why create a business? In episode 85, why spoke about WHY, and today we will speak about HOW to create a brand! Now, let’s speak about  HOW  we will create a brand and not just a business.

Here are the four tips on HOW to create a Brand!

  1. Learn as much as you can about who is the Ideal Customer Avatar - also known as - ICA or avatar - who is your business meant to serve? - great to understand their psychographics and demographics.
  2. Create an emotional connection to the brand through copy and other mediums. A feel-good emotion will connect your ICA to the brand and help to increase the lifetime value of your customer.
  3. What does your logo look like- keep it simple while eye-catching and ensure it’s consistent on all social platforms.
  4. Socialize your brands so your ICA knows your business exists. Influencer marketing can help you achieve this goal with less stress.

Time to speak pretty openly about why building a brand and not only a business is the best strategy to ensure longevity! Yes, it will take more energy and time upfront but it is well worth it!

  1. Reduce your customer acquisition cost - building a brand will help to increase customer loyalty and will result in referring others customers. This will reduce acquisition costs plus expand your customer base!
  2. Due to the increased brand loyalty, you will have a greater return customer rate further increasing the lifetime value of your customer and profits for your company.
  3. Connecting the brand’s story to emotion will further help with brand loyalty further propelling sales and profits without increasing marketing spending.  Sell more products with less hesitation.
  4. Building your brand will help you pivot to other items in the market if your main product goes “out of trend”.

Why hire a virtual assistant (VA)? This is a great question and it’s more than just taking items off your to-do list! Let me break it down so you can start considering the option of hiring a VA as you start and scale your business!

  1. Learning the art of delegation! - Delegation is a key skill you will need to master! You not only will learn how to delegate but also more about yourself, your leadership style, and communication effectiveness
  2. Work smarter by removing repetitive tasks from your to-do list! This will allow you more white space in your calendar to create in your business and lead the business to the next goal!
  3. Having a VA will keep your momentum going! You are accountable to your VA and as a result, you are more likely to stick to the tasks that are designed to be yours. For example, I have the required task of recording this show each week and our amazing editing team will take care of the rest! I may not have continued with podcast/YouTube recording and filming if it were not for me being accountable to my team to produce the creatives! This has helped me keep up with the momentum!
  4. Bonus tip on how I work with my VA team- Watch/listen until the end to find out!! This bonus tip has saved me loads of time and helped with communication, so it’s a must!

Time to start talking about your mental health, specifically anxiety and how it shows up in your business!

I want to provide you 4 tips on how to understand your anxiety and how it might be showing up in your business and how you then need to manage it!

Tip 1: Acknowledge the anxiety. Ensure you understand that experiencing anxiety is completely normal and it is required for survival. Where it is not normal is when your anxiety is preventing you from experiences that you enjoy. The goal is to take your functional anxiety and channel it into your next project!

Tip 2: Use your anxiety as your internal compass. Is your anxiety telling you to slow down, or speed up? For example, is your anxiety is high because you are fearful to take that next step in your career or business? Why is that? Do you need to understand more about the next steps, or prepare more before moving forward? What is the anxiety trying to tell you?

Tip 3: Use your anxiety to drive you into momentum. If you’re having a moment of high anxiety and you’re unable to focus, then complete an activity you enjoy to release that high energy, such as going for a walk, listening to music, or working out. Once your energy or anxiety has stabilized, then use that energy to focus on that goal or task.

Tip 4: Is your anxiety hindering your quality of life? Be honest with yourself and ask if your anxiety is preventing you from continuing with regular daily activities you enjoy? Do you feel that your anxiety could be coming from past experiences? If so, it is completely acceptable to have a mental health therapist who can professionally provide you with support!

Remember, anxiety is a “normal” part of life and you may be facing an increased level of anxiety if you’re jumping into a new experience such as starting a business!

And remember, you got this!

How to start again in business?

It can be so difficult if things don’t work out the first time in business, or if you need to take a pause in business and you now need to “start again”.

I want to share with you 3 tips on how to start over again in business so it’s easier to hit “restart” or “unpause”.

  1. Change your perspective of your business and look at it as an experiment. You will have a hypothesis, or educated guess, or what will work and then you will take action and test your educated guess. You will measure the results in your business, such as volume of sales, or conversion rate on your website and see what will work. Even if your experiment does not work, you have still gained valuable knowledge regarding what will work and what will not in the future. You can use the knowledge and experience from any past business or experiment and apply it to your future business strategies!

  2. What transferable skills can you take from your past experience in business or in other areas of your life, which you can apply to your present-day situation. A common skill that many of us may not notice is the ability to delegate tactfully to our family members and then use the same skill to delegate to team members. Look at different domains in your life and see what skills you can borrow and apply to your business.

  3. Take a business break-in place from the start. Do not get all consumed by your business and place boundaries between your business and life’s other domains. Be mindful of your time, energy and space and ensure you have boundaries for each domain. For example, ensure you have a space in your house that will be free from the “business” and work on your business when your energy is at it’s best.

Remember, it is completely reasonable to take a “pause” in your business or if required press “restart”. If you can reframe your perspective using these tips, you will feel more energised and ready to jump back into action!

You got this!

Time to talk about a nasty habit that many of us have scummed to… Doomscrolling… a common habit of scrolling on social media, which could contribute to unintentionally looking for negativity.

In this episode, we speak about how to avoid this nasty phenomenon and ways to use social media constructively for our businesses!

  1. Contribute by posting on social media before you scroll and consume. It is easy enough to jump on social media and start consuming but as a business, you need to show up and contribute at a regular cadence. Your cadence could be once a week, once a day, or 2 times a day. Regardless of the cadence, you need to keep up with it, to ensure your audience and the algorithms know that you’re still around as a participant. Attempt to create a habit where you only consume when you post. Engage with the content you are seeing, so you are consuming the content with intention. Your attention is the most valuable resource and when you engage with the content, you not only make a real connection with another person, but you’re also telling the algorithm that you like that type of content and the algorithm will then present similar content and perhaps more opportunity to make real connections.

  2. Schedule the time you will engage with social media and using the tips above, ensure you are actively engaging when you do jump on social media. If you can create a schedule to post, then create “social media engagement time” before and after the created content has been posted. This will help keep your account active around posting time.

  3. Remove the social media apps from your phone's Home Screen. If clicking on the social media app has become a compulsion, then you should consider removing the apps from your home screen or deleting them from your phone and only using the desktop version.

  4. Find an app that will put a time control on your usage. I know it can become difficult to stop the compulsion of scrolling and if you find yourself going over the time allotted to social media engagement, then a time-limiting app for social media might be your answer.

  5. Replace your scrolling habit with another activity that will give you the same level of “downtime” or “transition time”. Consider journaling or reading as a replacement for social media scrolling. The activity you select should be something that will uplift you and provide you with positive energy!

Take one or two or all of these tips and apply them to your own situation to ensure you’re not succumbing to Doomscrolling!

Remember you got this! Head to bossitclub.com/podcast to find more fantastic episodes!

Enjoy!

Let’s talk all about transitions and how to manage transitions like a boss!
In this episode, I give you a little update on my current career transition as I move into an executive director role. To help me manage this transition, I am using specific strategies and I want to share these with you!
I also want to give you the “real- lay of the land”, as you transition from a full-time career to potentially a full-time business owner. The road is not always in a straight path and there may be points where you need to supplement your income to help keep your business and lifestyle afloat and this is perfectly fine!

Ok here are the tips to help you transition during times of change in your business, career, or lifestyle.
1. Prepare yourself - Can you reframe your mindset? You will need to prepare your mindset by allowing yourself the grace to be kind to you, understanding it might take a little more energy and time to get acquainted with all the “new” and also letting others know as well, that you won’t have all the answers at the beginning. 2. Preparing your family and supports - have an open dialogue with your family and friends including setting expectations. You need to be able to ask all for help and delegate out tasks. When you delegate tasks, you need to be specific and do not assume that family and friends can “read your mind”. If you need help, then let them know by asking with words rather than telepathically. Also if you can set the expectation with family and friends that you need a task to be completed or “owned” by them moving forward, you do not need to ask every day for a task completion, which could still add to your mental load. 3. Preparing your Team - As with your family and supports, you will want to set expectations as you transition with your team. You will need to delegate new tasks or modify existing delegated tasks. The goal is to remove demands off your responsibility list, so you are not becoming overwhelmed as your transition. If you are working for yourself and you do not have a team, you can start dividing out your tasks so when you are ready to hire your first virtual assistant, you know exactly what set of tasks to provide them! Also start setting boundaries with your time and space so your new transition roles do not take over your personal life and prevent you to rest and recoup daily.

If you find these tips helpful, start putting them into action and share this episode with a friend!

We will always have challenges and change is constant!  In your business and personal life, change will constantly be a concept you will need to be able to navigate!

In this episode, I provide 3 key strategies on how to manage change and make challenges into opportunities!

  1. Setting the Stage with the expectation with yourself and others that “change is constant”. When you are faced with change, you reframe the situation and state that “change is constant” and look for another solution and at the challenge being presented as an opportunity.
  2. Balance uncertainty of change with certainty, especially when you anticipate change or challenges. For example, having a great standard operating practice or structured calendar will help increase your certainty.
  3. Be the visionary or architect that will incorporate the challenge into your situation by incorporating a roadmap that will embrace that new challenge which could lead to a better opportunity.

Reaching more customers can be one of the most challenging aspects of business! And this challenge is not only for product-based businesses but also for service businesses! Finding your ideal client or ideal customer can seem like a very daunting task!

When I started Also Sophia LTD. I knew I was up against competition plus, I had no budget to put towards a large marketing budget. I decided to use social media and influencer marketing. BUT, I didn’t simply find any content creator to display the products. I used the art and science of psychology to help introduce our new products and our new brand! AND it worked!

Other small business owners saw the robust influencer marking campaign and started asking for help… so of course, I wanted to help! Tasmeea being one of our Founders of the program Influencer Marketing Made Easytook some time with me during an Instagram Live and spoke in-depth about her experience in the program and how she is now elevating her marketing game!

Welcome to a New Year! And if you’re catching this episode later on…welcome to a new day!

In this episode, we speak about the difference between a Dream Board, Vision Board, and Action Board and why each one plays a role in keeping your momentum going! Each board has a specific role and helps you move into sustainable action.

My suggestion is to carve out some time this week and play around with the board level that seems to come to your naturally. For example, you might like to daydream and most of the items that pop into your head would fit on your Dream Board. Or perhaps you can only think about the day-to-day actions, so start with your Action Board.

The goal is to start on one board type and build the remaining boards to keep up your momentum towards that great big goal!

Reaching more customers translates to more sales!

Yes…sales is a numbers game just as much as sales is a form of service.

This episode is an excerpt from our live recording that we completed on Instagram. We speak with Tahira from Nurshop regarding her experience with influencer marketing and what she gained from the program Influencer Marketing Made Easy! Tahira went from a brick-and-mortar location to a 100% e-commerce store in 2020 and has been working to bring brand name awareness and traffic to her online store platform. Influencer marketing worked! She learned her ideal customer was and which influencers and affiliates she should target.

We speak about the powerful Google Sheet plug-and-play worksheets we offer during the program Influencer Marketing Made Easy to make it easier for our students!

Students also received templates for service agreements; we encourage written agreements to increase communication between you and your influencer/affiliate team.

We speak about the value of starting early when planning your influencer campaign so you can enjoy the process and not feel overwhelmed.

Planning a business pause as a Core Operational Practice is likely the best decision you can make when starting your business. Not only will pausing your business give you time to take a much-deserved break, but it will also give you an opportunity to look forward to something that is not related directly to work, but rather a vacation or a getaway.

Here are 3 tips you can use to help execute your business pause as an owner of your business or a leader in a company you work for.

  1. Plan and schedule for the operational pause of your business far enough in advance to not negatively impact clients, customers, or patients. I like to schedule program pauses one year in advance especially for programs that have a waiting list or are in high demand.
  2. Inform the team members, referral partners, business partners, clients, and customers/patients of the pause in business operations so they can plan ahead and reduce any negative impact. The sooner you inform all those affected by the pause, the sooner arrangements can be completed.
  3. Do not start any new initiatives two weeks up to one month before a program pause so team members can complete deliverables that may be due during the business pause. For example, if you plan to continue social media posting, you may want to complete all your posts one month prior to the pause and schedule the media to automatically post so you are still visible on social channels during your business pause. You can check out episode 39 for more information regarding automating your social media scheduling.

Planning for a business pause is a great strategy and I highly encourage this practice to start early in your entrepreneurial journey to help you regroup, refocus and recuperate!

Time to chat about streamlining your business processes and Standard Operating Practices (SOPs) so as your business grows you can easily delegate out tasks! The SOPs are very important, regardless of which industry you are in! Here are few tips to get you started on how to build a SOP for the most pressing daily processes!

  1. Think about a common process and think strategically of each step in the process. This will help confirm a process and let you trust others to help out with the task.
  2. Think “one person for one job” so when you are ready to hire a team member, you can delegate out a single job, such as copywriting for many areas of the business. Dividing out tasks into buckets or categories will help you identify which areas of the business keep you in a positive flow state versus other tasks that deplete your energy.
  3. Dial down on the number of offers so it is easier for your customer or client to complete the transaction. To make a transformation, customers and clients generally need to make a transaction. So reducing the number of product offers helps the clients complete the transaction, leading to the transformation.

Instagram is such a powerful free marketing tool! Let’s use it right!

Here are a few tips on how to start using Instagram to drive traffic to your website.

A. Collaborate with others and be a person behind the post:

  1. Do Story Shout Outs!
  2. Complete a giveaway with other brands
  3. Start meaningful conversations with others by leaving comments and not just a “like”

B. What is your Call To Action? If you really want to see the power of Instagram, you must provide a strong Call To Action (CTA) to ensure people know what to do next. Unless you’re selling in your direct messages, you will need to provide your community and followers a link to head to your website so they may complete the transaction.

C. What is your website conversion rate? Generally, you will have a 1-2% conversion rate up to 3% on average (depending on the industry) conversion rate of individuals who come to your website and those who make a purchase. Here are a few tips on how to increase your website conversion rate.

  1. Provide social proof of your product or service using testimonials or product reviews
  2. Increase interaction with your potential customers through direct messages on Instagram, a chat function on your website, or invite them to check out your blog or masterclass
  3. Provide them with a newsletter or a freebie as an act of service before you expect the transaction to occur.

A few great apps that we use on our alsosophia.comwebsite are Loox and Sales Pop to provide social proof.

How do we work smarter and not harder? Let's share with you our Cookie Crumb Method™!

In our Cookie Crumb Method™…you repurpose your content! This is a great productivity hack that you must try to include!

Here are a few ways of repurposing your video content!

  1. Take your video show and turn it into a podcast- you can literally strip the audio out and show up on a whole other platform.
  2. Why not take the podcast as a video or audio and break it down even furtherinto 60-second fragments to place on your Instagram feed?
  3. You can take your video clip and place it as an IGTV on Instagram - then your community can stay on their native platform!
  4. You can take your videos and start a YouTube channel.
  5. Take the transcript from your video show and turn it into a blog! Or place the transcript on your website to increase SEO for your webpage.
  6. Now… you can take your transcript and turn it into an email newsletter!
  7. Take your video show thumbnail and create a Pinterest Pin so you can direct more traffic to your website

Instagram Live under 10 minutes can be downloaded and repurposed as a video that can be used for all of the above!

Now it’s time, it's commitment time!

Choose one of the above and take a piece of creative content and repurpose it to another format and now post one piece of content x 2 and then once you have the hang of that.. post it x 3!

Remember, just like a cookie, you will be breaking up your cookie and sharing the content on different platforms.

We’re here for you!

Influencer marketing is the best form of marketing today! I can say this confidently because we have been able to launch products in niche categories to communities that may have never heard or seen these products before! Big companies like Apple and Chanel have had to use influencer marketing in some capacity along the business journey.

In this episode, I provide you with three more reasons as towhy you need to incorporate influencer marketing into your business!

  1. Great access to User Generated Content (UGC) and will help with social proof and validate the product or service, plus you can use UGC in future paid ad campaigns.
  2. Increase exposure and set up your product or service to go viral on social media
  3. Building a community of followers and buyers who will continue to support the growth of your brand and company.

Influencer marketing is wonderful, but it will only work if you have chosen the correct influencer to match your ideal customer avatar. Get this right, and then there is no doubt your influencer marketing campaign will work to spread the word and generate more sales.

We also touch on how marketing can be uncomfortable and how I will use the reframe that I need to speak about my service or product a little bit more than I am comfortable with because my ideal audience members need the solution that I can offer and they may have missed the first, second or hundredth announcement.

Marketing is an act of service, as nobody will jump out of their seats to get going the first time!

We also touch on goal setting and planning. If you plan to achieve a goal, ensure you have placed time aside each day in your calendar so you can execute your plan!

If you would like to get in touch, drop us an email at hello@bossitclub.comor send us a direct message on Instagram.

We’re Here for You!

In this episode, we speak with Meera Sharma. Meera chats with us about her path to creating the School of Sass with the goal to educate everyone on the skills. They need to stay motivated, positive, and live the life they’ve imagined by channeling their inner sass.

At the same time, Meera acknowledges we can all have a down day, which is exactly when we need someone to cheer us on. This inspired her to publish The Little Book of Sass, featuring ‘sasspirational’ quotes to perk people up when they need it the most.

In this episode, we speak about why influencer marketing is so important to grow a small brand. Brands such as Chanel even used a form of influencer marketing back in the 1940s by spreading their Chanel No.5 in the air to attract customers!

Today, I am sharing three reasons why you NEED toinclude influencer marketing in your promotions!

  1. Social Proof - everyone loves customer reviews. Reviews drive customer confidence and this helps with sales!
  2. Customer Feedback and feedback from your Influencer Team
  3. Best Return On Investment (ROI) when you send out PR packages

As we head into the selling season, planning an influencer campaign can make or break your season’s results! We will be releasing Influencer Marketing Made Easy soon along with free training to ensure you are selecting the best influencer and content creator for your products.

We’re Here for You!

In this episode, we speak about the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) Cycle and how it relates to the three phases of business which are essential for any business to go through.

The three phases of business are similar to building a house or a skyscraper!

  1. Discover It - You may be ashamed of not figuring out what business venture you will want to start at the first attempt… or worse yet.. you feel like you have failed at the first business you attempt… but this is not a failure. It is simply you exploring different options to see what idea, service, or product offering will fit your lifestyle, passion, and personality! This is similar to laying the foundation of a house. You would never build a skyscraper building on a swamp… find a strong foundation, before you start building and you will be unstoppable!
  2. Build It- When starting a business, you need a community of buyers, and having brand name awareness will make your product or service even more valuable as copycats won't be able to touch you! Using different methods such as influencer marketing will help you build connections with the community and spread brand name awareness. Collaborations are another key way to ensure you’re building your business.
  3. Scale it- this is the time in business when you expand to different distribution channels and consider investing even more in paid advertising to really market your business so you can continue reaching a broader and broader audience.

Any time you move from one phase to the next, or you change one element in your business, you should run through the PDSA cycle and ensure you are measuring the change with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

You might make a change to help build your audience but what are the KPIs that you will be measuring to ensure the change was positive or negative? How long will you test out the change before you call it quits or decide if you will continue keeping the change?

We speak about all of these items in our Behind The Scenes Mentorship (BTSM) Program to help you move from one phase of the business to the next and ensure you meet your goals in a structured PDSA format!

We’re here for you!

In this episode, we speak to the business owner who could be transitioning back into the office as a leader or as an employee in a post-pandemic world! If you haven’t heard of the word Re-Boarding, we’re going to walk you through tips on how to “re-board” yourself or your team back into office space - onsite or even virtually.

I am going to share 4 tips on how to re-board, so the transition will have a few less hiccups.

  1. Acknowledge your feelings and the feelings of your team members.

  2. A suggested exercise is to imagine the worst-case scenario and the best-case scenario of returning back to the workplace to help reduce anxiety and fear.

  3. Be patient and compassionate with yourself and others.

  4. Leaders may need to slow initiatives down to help with change management. Team members need to ensure they are taking walking and stretch breaks and drinking water throughout the day.

  5. Ask for help.

  6. Many people will not ask for help until it’s too late. Offer help to others… be inviting and open so your colleagues feel comfortable reaching out for help.

  7. Confident Conversation with your leaders and managers regarding the re-boarding plan.

  8. Pro Tip: if you present a problem to your leader, then also present a solution.

Coming out of a worldwide pandemic is no joke. The whole world was rocked and we are still feeling the effects and could be feeling the lasting effects for many years to come.

Be kind to yourself and others. You got this! If you have any questions or concerns regarding the episode, you can send us an email at hello@alsosophia.com!

Remember, Make a Plan and Take Action…Yes, You Can Have It All!

Yes… this episode is all about how you can become more strategically lazy and use your time and energy more effectively!

The THREE TIPS that I share with you today are:

  1. Communicating with the right people at the right time - I share with you how I use communication to protect my energy and time. I provide a few tips on how you can do the same. A fewproject management tools that will help you with team communication are:
    • Monday.com
    • Trello
    • Asana
  2. Collecting feedback from the end-user in business or your day job - If you’re creating a new product or you're running a service-based business, customer and client feedback is incredibly important. Ensure you have a strategy on collecting this information. So again you are putting your time and energy in the right place.
  3. Creating strategic habits so you use less energy to complete the day-to-day - I share a great example of my start-up and wind-down daily routine.

Remember, your time and energy are extremely important to ensure you apply a few of these great strategies!

Have you ever been asked: "How long will you try your business before it starts making money?” or “When do you think your business will support the family?"

These are tricky questions. Many entrepreneurs quit before they even get started due to fear, lack of support, or lack of resources (time and money).

In this episode, you will learn that offering a time-limit to your success might not be the best approach. Rather, looking at your goal and aligning tasks to your goal. If you commit to complete these tasks consistently, your goals will naturally align, assuming that other variables that we do mention in this episode are also aligned with your goal.

One of the fundamental pillars of business is understanding who your Ideal Client is (IC). In business, you can't serve everyone. Laura shares her experiences as a photographer and how she turned down opportunities if it did not serve her IC market.
