Rob Begg helps high-achieving entrepreneurs align mind, body and spirit to attain next level performance with ease, certainty and speed.

He appeared on the Dealing with Goliath podcast in Episode #053: How Spirituality Can Unlock Next Level Performance. Quite a number of listeners asked that I get him back on the show to continue the conversation. So today we're going to expand further on that theme and talk about quite a few related things, but the core will be around "why all performance is always spiritual".

Topics Explored:
- Most people are seeking a different experience but with a negative vision, from fear or lack
- It's like people are trying to drive a car by looking in the rear view mirror
- Ego is not the enemy, it's just another belief. It's the way we identify with our mind is the problem
- When we try and use the mind to change the mind, it's like sending a police offer to catch a thief, when they are the thief
- "Our unconscious will always move us to continue experiencing what it survived in the past", why so many lottery winners go broke
- The key to getting 5x or 10x better results is to shift your identity first
- The order of play is spiritual, intellectual, physical, never the other way around. Be, do, have

Rob Begg helps high-achieving entrepreneurs align mind, body and spirit to
attain next level performance with ease, certainty and speed.

His work goes beyond mindset, or 'behind the mind', to guide his clients to exceptional, tangible, measurable results but from a foundation of knowing who they truly are and residing in that awareness.

So they get what they truly want much more quickly without all the unnecessary exhaustion as they're not coming at it from a sense of lack or 'I'm not good enough' beliefs and thinking.

Topics Explored:

  • The path to the true origin of outcomes
  • The importance of getting behind the mind
  • 'Coming out' with the spiritual label at 54
  • What's conditioned in our consciousness plays out in our experience
  • "The cave you fear to enter, holds the treasure that you seek" Joseph Murphy
  • Ego resistance that pushes us back when we look for our true identity
  • Just learn to get out of the way of our true desires
  • Goals from a heartfelt desire rather than ego based lack of self worth
  • What changes is what they start to entertain in consciousness
  • It is that simple, we're conditioned to believe it's hard
  • Remain aware of what we desire, not what we're faced with
  • Knowing who we truly are is the golden key to be and get what we truly want, which ultimately is to be happy and fulfilled

  • A real coach can coach anyone if you're using a proven technique
  • There's a comfort level though when you don't have to explain terms or industry background
  • A leader is always leading through change
  • Agency owners want to get back to the office, employees are saying let's wait another while
  • A lot thinking, the commute brought no value to my life
  • Use the day or two in the office for the collaboration, creativity and connection you've missed
  • If you treat mature professional folks as grown ups, they can get a tremendous amount of high quality work done remotely
  • It's not your job to micromanage, it's your job to hire people who are self-driven
  • If you're micromanaging who's looking at the long term strategy?
  • You can do their job, but they can't do your job, yet
  • The director, let's all the people do their jobs, but gives the direction and the vision
  • Mostly they come to me with a consulting issue, and I spot an issue with their leadership that's key
  • Coaching is a collaboration, if the chemistry isn't good, there's nothing I can do
  • 100%, your gut is always right
  • Empathy is the key to negotiating, we're often too focused on what we want
  • Understand their 'why'
  • You have to know you're willing to walk away
  • We give away power when we're in a rush, not have the protection you need
  • There's a deep need to be the good guy, a need to be liked in this industry
  • I'm shocked by the lack of courage out there but it's coachable, and I get to make money helping people be braver
  • Now is the time to improve your emotional intelligence
  • Dial up your empathy for your peers, clients and stakeholders
  • Watch not only the words they say, but notice the tone

Steve is the founder of The Unstoppable CEO, and the host of The Unstoppable CEO Podcast and has written over 400 articles on marketing for service businesses.

He's a bestselling author of 4 books; Podcast Prospecting, Unstoppable Referrals, Exponential Network Strategy and the Follow Up Formula.

Through his firm, Steve helps service business entrepreneurs create leveraged marketing systems so they can spend less time on business development, and more time on what matters most.

You may remember him from a recent Expert Panel: Becoming Limitless that I hosted.

Topics:

  • Fundamental challenge for people operating a service based business
  • Product based businesses are usually specialized within the business, into separate teams
  • The feast and famine cycle
  • 'We help the business owner realize the business that they really want to have'
  • All those marketing methods do work, but they don't work for everybody
  • We help them create leverage, with a very small time footprint, create consistent business development
  • Book number one took about 35 days start to finish
  • Marry your expertise to a solid and simple process
  • We have the book blueprint, where we breakdown to the key points in the chapter, and each key question to ask each key point, so there's never a blank page
  • This is how you can get books done in record time
  • It's often as simple as 30 minutes per day, Monday to Friday, for 19 days to have the book written
  • You're a walking talking package of your ideas, but I've to sit with you to sell me your ideas
  • A book is a more efficient packaging to sell your ideas than you
  • "I've a bunch of books printed up, I'd love to gift to people in your network you think would appreciate them"
  • It's a very different proposition, a very different ask
  • "If you're gifted a book you're not even interested in, I'm still grateful they thought of me. It has very high perceived value"
  • All of those authors on your bookshelf, literally own real estate in your world
  • Often clients say, 'a friend gave me your book, I didn't read it, but I really need what it says on the cover, can you help me?'
  • Authority: You're literally the one who wrote the book on the subject
  • It's about getting yourself in a place where people can discover you
  • This is not about selling 50,000 copies and being on the New York Times bestseller list.
  • Typically you spend $100k-$200k to be get on a bestseller list
  • 99% of business owners with expertise need a lead generating book which multiplies their ability to get their message out
  • What you do when you run out of relationships and networking events don't tend to have the people you need to talk to as they've sent representatives if at all
  • It was shockingly easy to get a business owner that I couldn't call on the phone, to accept an email request to be on my podcast
  • A podcast is great for creating relationships, for leading the collaboration
  • Why selling your expertise is fundamentally different in selling anything else
  • If you follow much of the sales training advice you'll just erode trust
  • Why snake oil salesman are why doctors are so trusted
  • The client must fully trust the prescription that you give them
  • Even if you don't have legal fiduciary responsibility, it's how we should be approaching our clients
  • For one hour a week you can have all your marketing and relationship building done
  • "Anytime there's a problem, even if it's not yours, you lean into the problem. It's never a question of fault, it's how do we fix it?"
  • Steve's most instructive failures and setbacks

Andrew Hryniewicz is an architect, psychotherapist and shamanic practitioner who is an expert in the psychology of resilience, trauma recovery and peak

  • Trauma is not so much what happened, it's the emotional scar tissue formed around the event that constricts and limits, the person's ability to function, be flexible
  • As the Buddhists say with our mind we create the world, the root of modern mindset work and that's true, but first the world made our mind
  • It's like in Jaws he says "we're gonna need a bigger boat", I realised I'm going to need a bigger me

  • The heart and soul of the indigenous experience is that we are all connected. No such thing as being thrown out of the garden of Eden
  • It links with architecture, the thread between apparently disparate things, how do we live in balance with ourselves, each other, the environment, the planet?
  • Predators can spot prey, it's unconscious
  • So when you release the memories, experiences, they realise they're no longer a target for the bullies, the bullies just disappear

Bill O'Herron is a corporate executive, practicing therapist and writer who seeks to use his 33 years of financial sales management experience, 24 years of marriage, 15 years of counselling clients, and 8,500 hours of sitting quietly to help all his clients better understand, change and deepen their relationships.

Bill’s research shows that relationships fail for one key reason: a lack of understanding of one’s own emotions and reaction patterns created in childhood.

He teaches that all your relationships with others, especially your marriage, started in 4th grade, when your limbic-emotional body learned, absorbed, and inherited your parents’ lives and experiences.

We are all therefore married to our own old, unconscious emotions more so than to our spouse.

An underlying principle of his work is: Emotion is the key to and the driving force underlying every thought and action in human existence

He celebrates in and humorously expounds on the belief that working on yourself, which will automatically improve the dynamics of all your relationships, is the most important thing in life, and that what we do right now in our relationship echoes down through posterity, changing who our grandchildren's children become.

Topics Covered:

  • Brain delineation when you hit your 30s

My guest today Mr Alastair McDermott. I've known Alastair since about 2007 or so, we even had a business project together for a few years and even to this day he's very much who I call on for a different perspective and his very valuable insights.

As it happens, he also did a fabulous job on the recent upgrade to almcbride.com. Known as the websitedoctor, he more recently focused in on what he was doing for years already, which is marketing for consultants.

Alastair helps independent consultants to generate more leads consistently so they can eliminate their dependence on referrals, and get out of the feast-famine cycle. He does this by helping them create and execute a simple, effective marketing strategy that works for their business and client base.

He is a former software engineer, now marketing consultant. He built his first website on GeoCities in the before-time of 1996, and he was been hooked on websites ever since. He left a "safe" corporate job in early 2007 to start and grow his first business during the worst recession in modern history - that was a wild ride. Along the way he co-founded several start-ups, some of which were mildly successful, and he has written a book called "Running a Website with WordPress: A Quick Guide for Business Owners".

Topics explored:

  • The risks of action and more importantly inaction
  • Your website is not for you, it's for you client
  • The dangers of word of mouth referral
  • Replacing word of mouth referrals but not replacing the trust
  • Content marketing; educate and entertain

  • Horizontal specialization in the problem or outcome rather than the customer / client
  • Why choosing a vertical specialization is most advantageous
  • The rolodex moment
  • How to start creating valuable content for your niche audience
  • Enlightened self interest and fiduciary responsibility

Peter Sandeen focuses on the fundamentals that make marketing consistently effective. Over half his clients are other marketing experts who want his help with marketing messaging, sales funnels and conversion optimization. He's known for being focused, straightforward and practical.

Many experts have adopted his processes and frameworks to simplify the most complex marketing topics. Thought of by many, as the marketers marketer, Danny Iny said, "Peter helped me increase my sales 423%", quite remarkable, as he's a renowned expert in his own right.

Peter regularly writes not just on how you can influence the decisions of others, but how people make those very decisions. So it doesn't focus so much on tools, tactics and strategies, but more so what makes those strategies effective.

On a personal note, I've known Peter for a number of years now and he's been a huge help and a huge resource to me. I can say first hand, very much that I know few people, few business brains that are quite as incisive, that can give such stark clarity as quickly as Peter.

So I recommend him if you have marketing or business issues, typically business strategy, or sales conversions. But if you need clarity, this guy can cut through all the confusion, all the noise, all the multiple different perspectives faster than I think maybe anyone else that I know.

Topics explored:

  • Question to ask of experts in any domain: What three key things to focus on?
  • It's simple and other people add complexity
  • The target, the offer and the messaging
  • If you miss the bullseye it's exceptionally difficult
  • Improved guarantee increased sales 10x & avoid guarantee blindness
  • Over 90% AB tests are useless: Test the things that change potential client perspective
  • The primary problem: that you are you, and not your customer
  • Great sources for getting more genuine, valuable feedback
  • What's going on, when they tell you your price is too high
  • Parental belief that marketing is evil and marketing by accident
  • Early copywriting courses and influences
  • Peter's approach to negotiation, making deals or business arrangements
  • Still selling to humans in business to business sales
  • "If you can't negotiate your way out of it so everyone's happy at the end, then something was wrong from the beginning"
  • If your messaging is terrible you can't compensate for that by being brilliant at tactics eg Facebook ads, blogging etc
  • The essential nature of 'linchpin skills', so obvious they're often bypassed

Welcome to episode zero of Dealing with Goliath Podcast.

This is where I outline who it's for, what you might get out of it, who am I, and what I and it stand for. In short, what it’s all about.

This is potentially for you if:

You're interested in expanding your skills and knowledge of how to ethically negotiate, influence and persuade others to your point of view without feeling sleazy. If you’re trying to get someone else to see things how you do, many would say you’re negotiating.

If you're interested in creative problem solving, developing greater awareness of mindset and its effects, of scientific research and proven process, and innovation on the one hand, with better managing your emotions to get your biology to stop working against you and instead work for you in stressful situations. If you're interested in how to better stand your ground but without needing to get aggressive, or resort to nasty or cringe worthy techniques then maybe Dealing with Goliath podcast is for you

Who am i? I’m Alistair McBride, a trainer and coach focusing on communication and the psychological edge in negotiation.

Big fan of theory then the application. So ideas, models, techniques then discovering how we apply them. Do we keep them, tweak them or do we ditch them?

I’m interested in people’s unique life and work experiences and directions and how that accumulates to their mindset and how they approach dealing with people and solving problems. I’m fundamentally interested in people.

The strong are never quite as strong or invulnerable as they seem, and the underdog is never as weak or limited as they seem. Everything about this podcast is about how to turn that tide, how to move things and tip the odds in your favour, without selling your soul.

In this episode:

  • What I stand for & what Dealing with Goliath is all about?
  • Goliath; not just an underdog story
  • Negotiation and influence as a force multiplier
  • 3 Formats: Solo espresso shot
  • Double espresso interview
  • Lungo long interview
