Should you, or shouldn't you? Is it worth it? I get asked about actor websites almost weekly. They're not feasible for every actor at certain stages of their careers...but just because you don't have a website (or a website that's working for you) doesn't mean you're off the hook - all actors should have a home base for their marketing. In this episode, learn 3 options for actors who don't want a website and the key elements needed when creating your own landing page or EPK.
We all have those slow seasons in our acting careers. They can make us overthink, doubt ourselves, and just get plain frustrated. Some actors struggle to know what to do to fill the time, or struggle to find the motivation to be proactive when auditions and bookings are slow. So I made you a list of 12 activities that will benefit your acting career, and help you level up!

Psychotherapist Michelle Shlafman is back on the podcast, talking about techniques specifically for actors to protect their mental health. In this episode, she chats with Alison and Alex on a Clubhouse session about: Is acting a poor career choice for a highly anxious being? At what line should an actor step away from acting if it harms their mental health? Is there and/or should there be a specific approach for actors to protect their mental health when tackling intense or trauma-oriented scenes? Especially for actors who have experienced trauma themselves in the past? What are some physical and mental practices actors can do to help process anxiety, difficult emotions or experiences? And How can actors create boundaries?

When it comes to the casting process there are a few funky words and phrases that tend to appear, and they can get pretty confusing (especially because each casting director might use them a little differently!).
We know you’re already on an emotional rollercoaster, so we wanted to help make the ride a little less bumpy and overwhelming by breaking down a few casting terms: Avail check, pin, first refusal, and holds.

A lot of actors have this idea that, "If I JUST book a series regular role on a TV show, all my problems will be solved!" -- but have you ever actually done the math on how much you'd be making, how much you'd have to spend, and how much you'd actually end up with in the bank by the end of the day? The answer might surprise you. In this episode, Alison breaks down the numbers so that you can make informed decisions now before you become a series regular.

In the pursuit of a career as an actor, there are very few things in your control. You can't control bookings, or how a project is edited, etc. In fact, an actor can only truly control three things in their career: Their materials, their training, and their attitude. In this episode, we're going to do a quick refresher on the materials. The resume, the headshots, the demo reel footage/clips, and how they come together on an actor's Actors Access page.

And we've seen somewhat averagely talented actors enjoy wildly successful careers thanks in large part to their ability to navigate around these common mindset struggles. In this audio recording from a live Clubhouse session with Beyond Acting co-founders Alison and Alex Collins, you'll hear the best tips and tricks to help you get out of your own way as an actor and avoid self-sabotage.

There comes a time, or two, or three, or a hundred, when an actor feels like they will never make it in the entertainment industry. This business is hard, and there are so many factors, mostly outside of our control that can determine whether or not we find the success we dream of.
And speaking from experience, this feeling SUCKS. It can be devastating and put you into a funk that can last for days or months even. It can shake the very foundation of who many of us are and that’s never a fun experience, but if sorted out properly, it can actually serve as a catalyst for something greater.
Whether you’ve been there before, are feeling that way right now, or are looking to the future, it’s important to understand your options in these moments and some positive ways to move forward without falling into the same vicious cycle. Today I’m sharing 5 steps I would recommend taking when you feel like you’ll never make it as an actor. These are things I’ve done myself and have been suggested by many coaches and mentors over the years. As always, take what works for you and leave the rest.

Today we are talking specifically about the concept of intention and actionable ways we can use it in our acting journey to help us get closer to our goals. Did you know that it's been scientifically proven that direct, intentional thoughts can kill bacteria?! If we can do that, we sure as heck should be using that superpower for our acting careers. As actors, we’ve literally signed up for a career of complete unknowns. We have very limited control over our careers - what we book, when we book it, how many auditions we get. There are millions of other people out there who share our dreams, and thousands we’re competing up against for any one role. Could intention-setting be the extra push we need to succeed?

Are you frustrated that your work is off, your performances don’t land like they used to, or you’re feeling unsettled with the state of your career? It might be time to consider that the issue actually lies within. As actors our bodies are our instruments, our minds and hearts are our tools. If there’s an imbalance going on, a blockage, it will come out in your work. I can guarantee it. It doesn’t matter that the thing you’re avoiding technically has nothing to do with the entertainment industry. If it’s creating chaos inside you, it’ll affect your career. If you're looking for a sign, this is it.

In this episode Alison explains her inspiration behind creating the podcast and fills you in on her background in the entertainment industry (aka who the heck she is and why should you bother listening). She also dives in to the concept of digital isolation, the bubble that's been created because of technology and social media and how it's affecting the way we connect. We'll cover what digital isolation is, how it affects us specifically in the entertainment industry (both career-wise and personally), and methods for breaking the bubble and sparking deeper, more engaging connections with others in the industry.
Have you experienced digital isolation? How has it affected your career and how do you combat it? Share a comment and let us know!
About the show:
It's a Slate of Mind with Alison Haselden is a video-podcast designed to spark honest, unfiltered conversations within the entertainment industry community about things we're all thinking but don't talk about enough. It can feel isolating in this digital age (anyone else trapped in a self-tape bubble?), but we don't have to go it alone. Alison invites you to join her circle of friends new and old as we tackle the industry together.
Alison Haselden grew up as a child actor and singer (her first time on set was age 6!) performing in commercials, print ads, film, TV, professional theatre, and recorded music between Orlando, FL, Nashville, TN, and Los Angeles, CA. She's now Atlanta, GA based pursuing film and TV as well as screenwriting.
