Today I have the joy of chatting with Bradley Sharpe, a 2020 CSM graduate from Nottinghamshire - also known on Instagram as ‘tent boy,' about how to make your style go viral.

After being a design assistant Marc Jacobs in New York for a year, Bradley returned to London to complete his graduate collection - during a pandemic. Utilizing up-cycled outdoor materials, he proves that tents can actually be chic.

This week, I’m chatting with Bradley about how he created a collection that’s as beautiful as it is social media-worthy (despite the odds), and how we can create work that both attracts press, yet is still authentic to our process.

On today's episode, I spoke with Lydia Bolton on how you can become a DIY fashion queen!

Lydia Bolton's namesake brand is made for women who want to look good, and know their clothes did good. Her work reuses unwanted textiles and puts them into fabulous pieces you’ll LOVE to wear.

Featured in miss vogue, the face and grazia UK, Lydia’s pieces don’t sacrifice style street-cred for sustainability and we’re all about that here at fashion originators. I wanted to speak with Lydia specifically today because, during these covid times, she has started selling DIY clothing kits that have become a huge hit – empowering us all to not only become makers, but to also rethink the way the items in our closet are made.

I've been thinking about this episode 'how to get your fashion career (and life) back on track' ever since mine became derailed in March. As difficult as corona has been for the whole world, I think it has really brought to light a lot of preexisting issues that needed to be changed in the fashion industry and in our lives.

On this episode, I'm sharing how my fashion career (and life) have changed post Covid-19, how I'm adapting, and how you can too! I hope you find this episode helpful -- at least in the sense of knowing you are not alone. We are all figuring this out together! Joshua James Small is an up-and-coming British designer (also a model and freelance stylist). He has worked for the likes of Richard Quinn and Gareth Pugh, announced the release of his brand exclusively to HUNGER magazine (THAT BROWN VELVET SUIT OMG) and has worked with the likes of SCHON, Teeth, Fucking Young! and Dear Boy Magazine, and the best place ever SHOWstudio.

His work has also caught the attention of stylist Karen Clarkson, and has been worn by multiple platinum selling singer/songwriter Rita Ora.

Joshua creates his collections in a sustainably-minded way, and focuses on precise pattern-cutting and escapism. On this week’s episode, I’m going to chat with Joshua not only about his creative process, journey, and getting press, but largely about that awkward balance between having values but also being in the thick of the industry – what a concept lol.

Happy 2020!

This week, I have the joy of chatting to two of my favourite social media creators in the London fashion scene who not only make me laugh my ass off, but also help me think about the deeper systemic issues going on in our industry. These two people are @skipdin and @trash4gold. @skipdin, AKA George Serventi, is an Instagram fashion critic who commentates on the industry for the likes of LOVE magazine and SHOWstudio. His profile is filled with pointed memes and hilarious captions to match. @trash4gold AKA Chekii Harling, is the founder of TRASHmag -- a publication that highlights alternatives to fast fashion and the throwaway mindset towards clothing. Similar to George, Chekii also loves a great meme -- with a sustainable fashion twist, of course. On the side, she teams up with the likes of London Fashion Week and Fashion Roundtable to create content that sparks positive change.

On the latest podcast, I share my philosophy behind Fashion Originators, why it exists, and what it takes to become a guest. I am so humbled by the brilliant insights of everyone I speak with. I hope that this episode helps you -- whether you're trying to find your path to changing the industry (I know I am), or you just need some more PR (DIY PR is an episode coming very soon -- don't worry).

This week, I have the joy of speaking with Shaunie Brett; a sustainable fashion business consultant and Cambridge masters student. Despite her thriving career as a stylist for the likes of LOVE magazine, Burberry, and menswear start-up Thread, Shaunie knew something wasn't right in her life. Realizing this feeling was derived from a form of clothing addiction (let's be real -- we've all been there), Shaunie decided to not buy ANY new clothes for a year, her #nonewclothes challenge being featured publicly in the Evening Standard.

Presently, Shaunie has not only gone one year without shopping, but she has also freed herself of anxiety, and transformed her fashion career into one that aligns with her new lifestyle. On the show today, Shaunie shares her advice on how you can build a fashion career that feels authentic to you, and how shopping less is actually easier than you think.

This week, I have the pleasure of interviewing Natalie Grogan the founder of ALL EYES, a fashion trend forecasting and consultancy company based right here in East London! While there are a lot of agencies in London, what makes ALL EYES different is their focus on scouting trends at ‘street level’ and sharing this knowledge, professionals from the likes of ASOS giving her business rave reviews. Alongside ALL EYES, Natalie also does freelance design work, helping brands build and execute their visual identity.

This week, I have Eshita Kabra-Davies, the founder of By Rotation as this week’s guest! By Rotation is a mobile app that is changing the way we consume fashion through allowing users to share their wardrobes -- think Airbnb for mid to high end fashion. Through using the platform, users decrease waste, increase closet-space, bring in passive income, and join a community of like-minded girls who love fashion just as much as they’re worried about the planet.

On the show, Eshita shares the journey to building By Rotation, and how she envisions the future of ‘circular fashion’.

One Vintage is more than just an iconic vintage shop here on London’s Portobello Road. Rather, One Vintage is a luxury brand transforming antique textiles and relics into modern luxury pieces. Afraid a piece won’t fit? They’ll make it work. Have a piece you want them to repurpose? Done. Need a piece re-beaded? Marcelle can help. And if that wasn’t awesome enough, Marcelle even has a selection of her pieces exclusively retailed on Browns Fashion.

Welcome to the first episode of season 3!

In this week's episode of Fashion Originators, I sat down with Pavel Dler — the brains behind Culted. Culted is a video content platform featuring the coolest creative voices in fashion (Patrick McDowell, Harris Reed, Sangiev, Simone Murphy — to name a view), ALL discussing fashion news and trends.

I met Pavel earlier this year through Instagram — we had a great coffee / vino meeting where we discussed our favourite fashion content, the future of fashion content, AND what pisses us off about fashion media today. Ever since we had that chat, I’ve been wanting to replicate it in a way — not only so you guys can hear it, but also because CULTED has finally launched (and it wasn’t even out back then).

Enjoy!

This week I have the joy of chatting with FINDA founder Mariya Grinina, and FINDA's Head of Product Martine Dyb.

FINDA are revolutionizing the fashion modelling industry through connecting fashion models with brands directly, only taking a 10% commission, and putting ‘modelpreneurship’ at the heart of everything they do. Rather than favouring certain girls over others, FINDA provides models with a new sense of empowerment — whether it’s through negotiating their own fees, or working in a safe and comfortable environment.

Today, I’ll be chatting with FINDA about building the platform, why the industry needs to change, and how we can make that change.

This week, I want to talk about two topics that are different but actually quite interrelated -- ‘success / friends’ and ‘intern brain.’

"Success is the one term I didn’t make up, but it’s almost less clear than my wannabe psychologist lingo.

As I’ve built up this fashion podcast, and a fashion career alongside it, I’ve been proud and open about the things I have accomplished. When people ask ‘how’s the podcast going’ or ‘how’s your job’ I don’t lie.

Right now, I think I am exactly where I’m supposed to be. My stats are growing, I’m attracting incredible guests, and I’m creating really insightful content that people tell me is very helpful to them. In my day-job, I’m working for a really great company that invests a lot in training me and that listens to my ideas

HOWEVER….

When you say something like ‘I’m happy at work’ or ‘I’m having so much fun doing the podcast’, it’s almost not quote on quote ‘enough’ for people [...]."

Since Bailien is anonymous, this episode will feature the artist with a Darth Vader sounding voice. This week, I had the joy of speaking with fashion journalist and activist Lottie Jackson, about her thoughts on what 'diversity' really means in the fashion business.

I think it’s important that you all learn more about Lottie’s work -- she’s more than just a fashion writer. Lottie is a diversity advocate, Oxford graduate, writer and correspondent for the amazing fashion roundtable organization, and a contributor to publications we all know and love like Sunday Times Style, ES Magazine and The Guardian.

On this week’s episode, I asked Lottie a bunch of questions which she answered via email -- they all pertain to living and working with a disability in the London fashion business, misconceptions people (and brands) have about what diversity and inclusion really mean, and how she built up her journalism cred to where it is today.

This week, I have the joy of interviewing Marion Rabate, the founder of Ernest Leoty. Ernest Leoty is not just another activewear business -- rather it’s THE brand that will make you want to wear corsets to the gym. Yes, really.

With a design team that combines couture brand experience with technical expertise, Rabate is building ‘couture for leisure’ that the likes of Vogue, Financial Times and Wallpaper can’t get enough of.

Named after the inventor of the modern corset, Ernest Leoty, Rabate’s brand combines her love of ballet, history and femininity with a wearability that London’s top retailers can’t get enough of.

On the latest episode of Fashion Originators, I have the joy of interviewing Patrick McDowell, who, as aptly put by L’Officiel Magazine, is the ‘CSM graduate already dressing the stars.’ While that is very true (the likes of Rita Ora, M.I.A and Slick Woods on the cover of Elle UK serve as evidence), Patrick’s brand and vision go far beyond straight-up glamour.

During his placement year at Burberry, Patrick learned that Burberry only used 30% of their sampling fabric. After writing Christopher Bailey a letter, Patrick was given off-cut fabric to use for his graduate collection. Entitled ‘Climbing Family’ the collection is a juxtaposition of hypermasculine climbingwear against his ‘Liverpool glam’ roots.

This week, I have the joy of interviewing Jemima Sara, who made her art into an eponymous ethical fashion brand. Not only did we chat about her story (she studied puppetry), but we also discussed how YOU can turn your art into a charitable fashion brand.

Featuring her 'martini ladies' illustrations, Jemima's fashion garments are empowering in their hilarity, body positivity and charity association (she donates 10% of proceeds to Young Women's Trust). Worn by the likes of Daisy Lowe and available at one of London's hottest shopping destinations, Coal Drop's Yard, I'm thrilled to be promoting such a promising (and kind) fashion designer.

On episode #20 of Fashion Originators, I chatted with Dessy Tsolova, the founder of Utelier – a platform where you can make your fashion designer dreams a reality.

While most people want to start a brand, the ‘how’ can often be difficult. Where can I get my stuff produced? What materials? Where are these materials? What is a line sheet? A sample set? Do I really need 5 sample sets of the same t-shirt? Really, there are too many questions. Recognizing this problem, Dessy created Utelier -- YOUR directory, marketplace and education resource for all things fashion production. With a background working for companies like Burberry, and heading up Product Design and Development at Smythson for over 6-years, it’s safe to say that Dessy is your go-to for all things fashion production.

On episode #19 of Fashion Originators, I had the pleasure of speaking with Charlotte Garnett, a London-based, CSM-taught fashion jewelry designer.

After creating her 2015 graduate collection, ‘Cure for the Itch’ – which explores the subject of soothing anxiety’, Charlotte then completed A 2-year residency at Sarabande: The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation. At the foundation, Charlotte further developed her kinetic jewelry concept under the mentorship of Shaun Leane -- McQueen's head jeweller.

On the episode, Charlotte and I discuss the art of building a fashion brand with purpose -- and what it's like to see your fashion product change lives.

On episode #17 of Fashion Originators, I chat with Laurie Truman, the founder of Denude magazine. London-based, Denude is an indie magazine aimed at women who want honest, intelligent and thoughtful fashion and culture content.

To do this, Denude focuses on intelligent women with unique perspectives, all while promoting the concept of ‘slow fashion.’ For those of you who don’t know (I myself didn’t know before doing research for this episode), ‘slow fashion’ , as put by Alessandro Michele, is a resistance to ‘the mantra of speed that violently leads to losing oneself’ or the seeming ‘something new at any cost’ mantra within the fashion industry. Think: resistance to fast fashion, throw-away trends and sweatshop labour.

On the episode, Laurie and I discuss the future of fashion media and why the industry needs to SLOW DOWN.

In addition to overseeing the Student Enterprise Challenge – which was won by Lara Intimates AKA Cindy from episode 9 – Tim also supports students in-curriculum, and with business support workshops for SET contestants. Although Tim isn’t the founder of a niche fashion business, he is an expert on them, and I believe his insights will be a real asset to the Fashion Originators community.

On episode #10 of Fashion Originators, I spoke with Megan Sullivan -- the founder of luxury post-mastectomy fashion brand, With Grace B. Bold. After Megan’s mother was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer, Megan became inspired to combine her fashion design background with her desire to improve the lives of breast cancer patients and survivors. Post-mastectomy, women often struggle to find stylish and comfortable clothing. To solve this struggle, Megan developed two tops: “The Ann-Elizabeth” and “The Eileen." Both are luxurious wrap-tops, but the Ann-Elizabeth also features a container for the mastectomy drainage system.

On the episode, we chatted about the art of building a niche fashion brand with a deeper purpose. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed speaking with Megan. Regardless of your endeavour, I hope Megan's insights on catering to a market need inspire you.

Unlike most lingerie fashion brands, Lara Intimates offer a wide range of sizes (28A to 36E), and focus every aspect of their business on creating 'a product with better values that women actually want to wear.'

On episode #8 of Fashion Originators, I chat with Hugo Taylor and Charlie Morris, the founders of Taylor-Morris eyewear. After building a mutual affinity for eyewear with his best friend, Charlie Morris, they decided to start a brand together -- Taylor-Morris.

On the episode, I quiz the boys on their founding story (hint: it involves a villa in Ibiza and a Harvey Nichols buyer who loves The Smiths), knowing 'nothing' about business, and the future of eyewear.
