Dorothea is a neurosurgeon trying to understand the relation between the soul and the human brain. She asks various philosophers about the soul: its origin, whether divine or natural, consciousness, the unconscious mind, free will, the moral life, art and creativity, and spirituality.

Professor Allan Herbison, Director of the University of Otago's Centre for Neuroendocrinology gives a lecture in recognition of being awarded the 2011 Distinguished Research Medal. An internationally eminent researcher into how the brain controls fertility, Professor Allan Herbison, is this year’s recipient of the University of Otago’s highest research honour. The University awards the medal for outstanding scholarly achievement, including the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge, the development of innovative technology, or the development of concepts that lead to significant advances.

Dr. Myron M. Levine Director of the Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Maryland School Of Medicine gives the 2011 McAuley Oration.
Dr. Levine’s clinical research has involved studies of pathogenesis and the assessment of a variety of vaccines in adults and children in Maryland, as well as in many developing countries. He designed, arranged and supervised the performance of several large-scale, randomized, controlled field trials investigating the efficacy of live oral typhoid vaccines (which led to licensure of Ty21a by the FDA) and a vaccine to prevent invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b. He is the recipient of the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award for lifetime achievement in the area of vaccine development and implementation. Held November 7, 2011.

The Māori Affairs Select Committee’s investigation into the tobacco industry has invigorated the debate about becoming tobacco-free, and placed New Zealand at the forefront internationally of reducing the impact of tobacco on health in a similar manner to our nuclear-free stance in the 1980s. Professor Edwards investigates the need for a tobacco-free New Zealand and explores the best options for achieving the 2020 vision. Held September 30, 2010.

As Director of the National Addiction Centre in Christchurch since 1996 – he is passionate about the right of consumers to know the other side of the alcohol story – its carcinogenic qualities to name just one. This lecture is the prelude to a national alcohol campaign.
