To say FKA twigs in her near-decade career has seen and experienced it all is an understatement. Since first arriving in 2012 as a hot artist to watch, which each release twigs has extended her alt-baroque-electronic world with each new release, culminating in the grandiose opus Magdalene. In the time since, between some very public and very private battles and a pandemic, twigs took some time to recuperate and nearly stepped away from music altogether. Little did she know, in taking "a break", she'd piece herself and her craft back together again, empowered by the everyday intimacy of life itself. Caprisongs is twigs' jubilant and carefree rebirth, where she steadies for mainstream domination. In July 2018, blackgaze (black metal/shoegaze) juggernauts Deafheaven released one of the most unique records in recent memory. Stomach churning vocals balanced across delicate, graceful instrumentation and tropes of classic rock. This was not blast beat, evil black metal; this was pretty and hopeful. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love is a masterwork of blended styes which despite their completely divergent nature, sound beautiful rather than devastating. Teens of Denial had music nerds and critical darlings everywhere swooning. The thirteenth (!) record in 23 year old, Will Toledo’s catalogue, provided hooks, riffs, lyrics and arrangements so ludicrously sweet, we still yearn for them to this day. Mirror II is the third full length record from The Goon Sax, an indie pop/rock trio from Brisbane who formed as friends in high school. Lee Tran Lam talks to Alice Ivy about her second album, Don't Sleep, which was nominated for an Australian Music Prize. The Melbourne artist finished the record just as the world went into lockdown last year. She talks about collaborating with local greats Thelma Plum, Ecca Vandal and more, plus her international songwriting sessions with Cadence Weapon and other overseas collaborators on the record. She also covers the surreal way her Ecca Vandal track, "In My Mind", blew up around the world thanks to an Apple ad, while she was stuck in Melbourne during its intense 100+ day lockdown. 10 years ago, Manchester, England collective WU LYF (or World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) released a record, and enacted in a moment, Go Tell Fire To The Mountain, which kind of came and went. An album much unlike anything before or since, often described as ‘heavy pop’, referenced in the tracklist itself. WU LYF created a sonic tour-de-force that is very special, as fleeting as its presence may have been. It’s been 10 years since the release of Panda Bear’s classic record Tomboy, and to very excitedly honour that anniversary, we chat through the often overlooked album in full. Forming one part of the critically acclaimed Animal Collective, as well as releasing equally praised music in his own personal right, Panda Bear has no shortage of exceptional work to enjoy. Tomboy though, is a real highlight even considering, featuring some of the songwriters strongest moments in his entire catalogue. MC/Producer Daniel Dumile, best known as MF DOOM, passed away on the 31st October, 2020 aged 49. He left behind one of the all time great hip hop resumés and influenced a bevy of today’s artists so large, it would be impossible to list them all. Arguably his greatest work was 2004’s Madvillainy, a masterpiece collaboration he made with superproducer Madlib. Amongst a world tour, Gordon Koang and his cousin Paul Biel made the tough decision to not return home and seek asylum in Australia. For five trying years, longing for his family, he stopped releasing and performing music. Unity the album sees Gordon Koang come back to sharing his music again, with the hope of helping others as it did him in times of uncertainty. Koang and Biel blend traditional Neur rhythms and instruments with compositions in English, Arabic and his native language of Neur.
