Priority Bicycles is a small company with big dreams. They went from a Kickstarter 11 years ago to a company that has a full line up of bicycles that feature a belt drive system instead of your standard chain. This makes for, as they would say: the best low maintenance bicycles in the world, period. Their strategy is simple: high quality parts, an efficient supply chain, low overhead, and an online business model. On this episode meet Amaiya Bearpaw. As a proud member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, she was chosen to pedal about 950 miles in 2023 as part of the Remember the Removal Bike Ride, also known as RTR. The ride spans from Georgia to Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma over nearly three weeks. The Remember the Removal Bike Ride was started by the Cherokee Nation in 1984 with the intent for Cherokee youth to retrace the Trail of Tears and get a glimpse of the hardships their ancestors faced when they made the same trek on foot years before. The ride became an annual event starting in 2009 and today, riders are selected based on an interview process. Then, the selected riders train for six months and also learn about the history of the Cherokee . During the bike tour, riders get re-connected with their past, honoring and visiting the historic landmarks and unmarked graves of their Cherokee ancestors. Amaiya was part of the 2023 team and is on today to tell us about her experience.https://rtr.cherokee.org/https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/remember-the-removal-bike-ride.htm https://shop.visitcherokeenation.com/www.murphologypodcast.com Email me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. There are many ways to enjoy a bicycle tour whether you join an event, pay someone to provide logistics, or you do all the planning yourself. On this episode meet Zach Ostrander from Summit Cycle Solutions. He started this all encompassing logistics company back in 2016 when he noticed a strong need for logistics specific to cycling. Summit Cycle Solutions does everything from full service, like ordering port of pots, filing permits, securing venues and hotels or camping for events, or they will take on one or two components of an event that a ride director may need help with. They also provide logistics support for private tours of 50 riders. Zach takes his job very seriously. He knows we as riders are trusting him and his company with our time and our vacation. A few rides that Summit Cycle Solutions are part of are the Triple Bypass and Colorado’s Ride in Colorado, and Cycle North Carolina Mountains to Coast. Events range from a long weekend to weeklong tours that take place in breathtaking places. Zach and his team work hard so riders can enjoy themselves without worrying about logistics. I got to see Zach and his team in action during Colorado’s Ride and was very impressed. They worked long hours, balanced many tasks seamlessly, and still brought the hype to the event! You can learn more about Summit Cycle Solutions and the events they are part of at summitcyclesolutions.com. Or email Zach at info@summitcyclesolutions.com and sign up for their newsletter so you are in the know. On this episode meet Meaghan Hackinen. She is an ultra endurance cyclist who recently completed the Tour Divide which is over 2,700 miles of self supported bike racing that follows the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, from Banff Canada down to the US/Mexico border. Not only did Meaghan finish this grueling race 7th overall with a time of 15 days and 23 hours, she nailed first place in the women's division! Meaghan is tells us a bit about how she embraced the grittiness of the race by staying what she describes as consistently consistent. In addition to being an ultra endurance athlete with countless wins and FKTs, she is also a writer with two books focused on two wheeled adventures. Both South Away: 'The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels' and 'Shifting Gears: Coast to Coast on the Trans Am Bike Race' are available for purchase. https://meaghanhackinen.com/ www.murphologypodcast.comhttps://tourdivide.org/

The Be Good Foundation was founded by Rebecca Rusch who among many things is an ultra endurance athlete, adventure cyclist, a world champion multiple times and the star in a film called Blood Road. At the Be Good Foundation, the bike is the center of their work as a catalyst for healing, empowerment, and evolution. They provide grant support to a number of organizations that use the bike in just this fashion. One such recipient is today’s guest, Megan LaBeth. Megan is currently on an epic bikepacking adventure, riding from New York City to a cycling event in Idaho put on by Rebecca Rusch called Rebecca’s Private Idaho. Megan has a mantra, "One Rotation at a Time," that to her is a reminder of the power of persistence, the importance of mental health, and the healing nature of cycling. She is raising money for the Be Good Foundation along the way so that there can be future Be Good Foundation scholarship recipients. She is going to tell us about her adventure and experiences as a solo traveler making her way to Idaho. Experience Plus! is a premium bicycle tour company with a great past. Back in the late 60’s a foreign exchange student from Italy met a high schooler in Oregon. They parted ways but reunited, fell in love and married. They chose to live in the US but wanted to travel. To make ends meet they put up posters to get people to join them on a bike trip to Italy, and it was a huge success. Throughout the years they continued doing tours and eventually decided to make a business of it. Today Experience Plus! is owned and operated by the couple's daughters, including today’s guest Maria Elena. They offer over 100 premium tours in places like Europe and South America including the classic guided tours, bike & boat tours as well as gravel explorations. Maria Elena is on to tell us all about Experience Plus!www.ExperiencePlus.comwww.murphologypodcast.com
What the heck is DFL? Well, keeping it PG, it stands for Dead Freaking Last and at Mid South Gravel there is a celebration for the last rider to finish the 100 mile gravel course, a high energy celebration that I have never experienced before. Hundreds of people line up at the finish line and this year as Beth McBride crossed that finish line, people were cheering, the champagne was spraying and the band was playing. It was epic! Bobby Wintle is the Race Director and he goes out of his way to make this weekend one heck of a party. Beth tells us about her experience at Mid South, which was her first 100 mile gravel finish. She also tells us about a challenge she joined on January 1st..to ride 10 miles a day. With over 100 days of consecutive riding, she is still going strong on this challenge and has no plans to end her streak!I was lucky to get to meet and ride bikes with Beth recently when we both were part of the Driftless Gravel Camp in Winona, Minnesota. We both share a deep love for the bicycle and the opportunity to ride. It was such a fun weekend! Have you heard of the Florida 500? This is an ultra endurance bike race that starts in Jacksonville FL and Finishes in Key West, giving riders over 530 miles of some of the fastest and flattest stretches of roads in the world. You can race as a solo unsupported rider, a solo supported rider, or as a Team Relay with 2, 4 or 8 riders. Today on the podcast meet cyclist Dan Swenson. Dan is an ultra endurance racer who lives in the high mountains of Colorado where he balances his professional time coaching others as an Endurance Sports Coach, owning and operating Dogma Athletica, a boutique fitness center, and as a small business consultant. He did the Florida 500 as a Team Relay with Mike Garcia and they won in their category. It took almost 27 hours for the duo to pedal 535 miles complete with nonstop headwind. They took turns pedaling 40 minutes and then taking 40 minute breaks as they made their way along the Atlantic coastline to Key West. Dan is going to tell us about his experience racing and winning the Florida 500, and just how important the power of the mind is while racing, and living life! You'll hear us talk about a neck surgery Dan underwent just after completing the Florida 500. Dan separately shared with me that his surgeon assured him the neck issue wasn't related to his biking position, but more likely to a life-time of staring down at a computer while at his work desk.https://dogmaathletica.com/ dan@dogmaathletica.comwww.facebook.com/dogmaathleticacowww.instagram.com/dogmaathleticahttps://murphologypodcast.com/ www.patreon.com/murphologyEmail me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE DISCUSSION. On this episode Dan Hurd, AKA Lt. Dan joins me, and we talk a considerable amount about the sensitive topic of suicide so please be aware. Dan himself has attempted suicide several times and lucky for him, and all of us, he found the bicycle and it changed his life for the better. He had only been on a few rides when he decided to join a friend for a long ride. As we all do at times, as the miles ticked away, the complaining started and Dan’s friend came back at Dan with some tough love and a phrase that stuck…one pedal at a time. The bicycle became Dan’s new obsession and he went from just a guy on a bike to a cyclist who spent several years biking the lower 48 states….all 48 of them! His bicycle journey became a mission to promote suicide awareness and to talk suicide prevention to anyone that would listen. And from that a nonprofit was born called One Pedal at a Time Movement, or OPAATmovement.com which focuses on suicide prevention. Most days when he is out riding he has a huge sign on his bike that reads Make a Stranger Smile. The bicycle is where he finds his peace and in this episode you will learn how he helps others find their peace as well.Again, please be aware this episode talks a lot about the sensitive topic of suicide.https://ridewithdan.godaddysites.com/https://opaatmovement.com/Ryan Van Duzer Episode: https://soundcloud.com/murphology-podcast/episode-113-bike-adventurer-ryan-van-duzer-recaps-ragbrai-xlixRum Runner Tour Episode: https://soundcloud.com/murphology-podcast/episode-146-riding-the-rum-runner-tour-to-key-westwww.murphologypodcast.comwww.patreon.com/murphologyEmail me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. Frankie Holt wasn’t really into cycling when she had a life changing experience while on a bike trip with her sister. She was in her 40’s and that bicycle trip gave her new energy, new confidence and the realization that freedom came with cycling. She also realized she couldn’t find a cycling bag that was quite right for what she needed, so she went about creating her own and her company, Fierce Hazel, was born! At Fierce Hazel, Frankie sells products that are unique, eco-friendly, and sustainable. She cares about the planet along with the people who make her products, and even uses rescued materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Frankie has created and sells the lightest full size wallet out there, along with other bike bags that are functional and appeal to everyone. On this episode, Frankie tells us about her journey into cycling and starting her California based, woman owned bicycle bag company. Today meet an extremely inspiring person, Jeremy Raeszler. Jeremy had a motocross accident back in 2008 that left him with a spinal injury and paralyzed from the waist down. He was now a paraplegic and told he would never walk again and that was a pretty hard pill to swallow for Jeremy. Time passed and somehow the idea of riding a bicycle got into his head and he was determined to figure out how he could learn to ride. You will hear from Jeremy himself how he accomplished what seemed to be an impossible goal. Joy Ride: A Bike Odyssey from Alaska to Argentina written by Kristen Jokinen, is a new book available now! On the show today meet WORLD TRAVELERS, Ville and author Kristen, who are currently on a book tour zigzagging across the country promoting the book. They are on to talk about their 2 year, 18,000 mile journey from Alaska to Argentina on bikes! After hiking the entire Pacific Crest Trail they had the itch to do something equally epic, and the plan to bike from Alaska to Argentina was born. At the time, they didn’t even own bikes. With the help of a friend they purchased bikes suitable for touring, tested those bikes with a very short 20 mile test ride, and boxed them up for the flight to Alaska. Their journey was all about biking, making connections and figuring out how little it takes to be genuinely happy. Kristen kept daily blogs and went on to write the book; Joy Ride: A Bike Odyssey from Alaska to Argentina, which is available now in your local bookstore or online. Sam started bike touring with the family at the age of 9 and riding across the country with his dad was a bucket list vision for many years. This year the stars aligned with both of their schedules so they put a plan and a route together and away they went. Sam was on a bit of a time crunch so with fully loaded touring bikes, they launched from Oregon with a goal to end in New Jersey. They averaged 86 miles a day over 42 days, logging in 3,600 miles! Today you are going to hear what it was like to live through a Derecho, and what it has to do with bikes and trees. A derecho is kind of like a hurricane that occurs on land, and lasts much longer than a normal thunderstorm. It was August of 2020 when I learned what a derecho was, because it came through and destroyed my community.Seeing over half of our tree canopy lost on that day was a terrible loss. How can you replace so many trees? And who can? A fellow cyclist who is also an arborist introduced me to The TREE Fund, and a cool bike connection. Tour des Trees offers both an in-person event as well as virtual, which is what I am doing. The virtual Tour des Trees Challenge is simple: Register for the Challenge, ride 350 miles, and raise $350 on a fundraising page. Miles are tracked via the Strava app. Registration for this virtual ride is free and there are no penalties for not reaching your riding or fundraising goals.I just launched my page: https://tour-des-trees-2023.blackbaud-sites.com/fundraising/murphs-fundraising-page Check it out and if you don’t want to do your own challenge, consider supporting the TREE Fund via my fundraising page. They are working towards a goal of $300,000 and I can only imagine what that money can do for the future of trees.Video of the derecho and me racing home! https://youtu.be/IJU08WQenck https://treefund.org/tourdestrees https://tour-des-trees-2023.blackbaud-sites.com/fundraising/murphs-fundraising-pagewww.murphologypodcast.com linktr.ee/MurphologyEmail me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. On this episode meet Johnathan Olson. He got a Peloton as a gift a few years ago and like most people he started out doing a couple of workouts a week. If you haven’t heard of Peloton, it is a brand of stationary bike that has built in features that allow you to join live cycling events so you can ride your bike alone in your home, but with thousands of other Peloton riders at the same time. This strong community is what got Johnathan hooked! He rides every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. And get this, he recently spent the weekend on his Peloton, and was able to log over 600 miles while participating in a Pelo-fondo. Amy Boelter is on this week’s episode to tell us her journey to reclaim her health via the bicycle. Several years back Amy experienced a tough journey to have a baby. Once her daughter was born, she fought some unexplained health issues that doctors couldn’t give her answers for a quick fix. Add to this the pandemic and some mental health issues along with postpartum depression, Amy didn’t like the way things were going. So she decided to reclaim her life and take control of her own health. It started with the purchase of a Peloton and 5 minute bike rides soon turned into longer and longer rides. She also made the decision to become sober and cycling really supported this. Today Amy is working out daily, has event goals on the horizon and seeing how far she has come keeps her moving forward!Info on The Alcohol Experiment: https://thisnakedmind.com/blog-the-alcohol-experiment/Cuyuna, Minnesota: https://www.cuyuna.com/Cuyuna Triathlon: https://www.cuyuna.com/off-road-triathlon/www.murphologypodcast.comhttps://linktr.ee/MurphologyEmail me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. Back in July of 2001, Michael experienced what he calls his ‘last bad day’, when he was hit head on by a motorist while riding his bike. This day changed his life, his outlook, and his identity. The road to recovery was a long one and there was a point when Michael realized he had to heal his mind if he wanted to get his body healed. That’s when he made the decision to call that terrible day back in July 2001 his last bad day. He has continued to live his life with this decision and today he is a leadership coach as well as a mindfulness and meditation teacher. He healed, he got back on the bike, and last year he rode his bike 3,600 miles across the United States, experiencing all that our country has to offer. He named this ride the Rise 2 Ripple Challenge and shared daily recaps that you can find on his website.www.michaelobrienshift.com www.murphologypodcast.comhttps://linktr.ee/MurphologyEmail me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. On the show today it is just me and I am going to give you a recap of my recent trip to Missouri where I rode the entire Katy Trail, west to east. I would highly recommend checking out this trail if you haven’t yet. The Katy Trail is in the Rail Trail Hall of Fame and you can learn more about it at bikekatytrail.com. It spans about 240 miles across most of Missouri. About half the trail follows the Lewis and Clark path along the Missouri River. It is a rustic limestone trail, formerly the MKT rail line, and remnants still remain, like the old communication poles. I spent a week riding the Katy Trail and wanted to share my experience with you. www.bikekatytrail.com www.murphologypodcast.comhttps://linktr.ee/Murphologywww.Patreon.com/MurphologyA few great deals to send your way:www.hammerhead.io Use code Murphology to get a free heart rate monitor with your Karoo 2.www.lilytrotters.com Use code MURPHOLOGY to get 20% off your purchase of thee best compression socks!www.primalwear.com Use code PRIMALMURPH for 20% off your Primal cycling gear.Email me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. Are you ready for a murder mystery that involves bicycles? This week I partnered with my co-host, Andrea Parrott, over at the Just Go Bike Podcast to take you back to 1919, where we discuss a famous unsolved mystery. The Green Bicycle Case was a British murder investigation and subsequent trial pertaining to the fatal shooting of Bella Wright near the village of Little Stretton, Leicestershire on July 5, 1919. Wright was killed by a single bullet wound to the face. The case takes its name from the fact that on the evening of her death, Wright had been seen cycling in the company of a man, Ronald Light, who was riding a green bicycle. Listen in and decide for yourself if suspect Ronald Light is guilty, or innocent! www.murphologypodcast.com https://linktr.ee/Murphology www.Patreon.com/Murphology A few great deals to send your way: www.hammerhead.io Use code Murphology to get a free heart rate monitor with your Karoo 2. www.lilytrotters.com Use code MURPHOLOGY to get 20% off your purchase of thee best compression socks! www.primalwear.com Use code PRIMALMURPH for 20% off your Primal cycling gear. The East Coast Greenway connects 15 states, 450 cities and towns, and has over 3,000 miles of people-powered trails plus low traffic roads. The East Coast Greenway spans from the Canadian border of Maine all the way to Key West, Florida — and it is considered the country’s longest biking and walking route. Erin is going to tell us about her experience as a solo traveler riding the East Coast Greenway. The nonprofit called 'East Coast Greenway Alliance' leads the development of the trail network and to date, about 1,000 miles of it is protected trail with the intention to increase that number. On the show meet Maggie. Maggie is a long distance endurance cyclist who recently placed first in the single speed women’s category in the Gravel Worlds Long Voyage, which is a 300 mile gravel race. Maggie completed this event in just under 26 hours and placed third female overall in this distance! Earlier this year she decided she wanted to try out long distance endurance events on a single speed, so she researched and put together her perfect bike thanks to Knolly Bikes and has enjoyed it so much she is gearing up for a 487 mile race in October, the Arkansas High Country South Loop, which includes over 32,000 feet of climb! A quote from Maggie: “For some, a bike becomes a bit of who we are, and a lens to view the world. On this episode meet Kim who recently completed an epic solo bikepacking adventure by completing the Katy Trail on her bike after being inspired by a female colleague who did the same adventure while back. At nearly 240 miles long, the crushed limestone Katy Trail spans nearly the full width of Missouri and is the country’s longest continuous rail-trail, intersecting with rural farmland, scenic small towns, and centers of commerce and government on its route paralleling the Missouri River. And if you listened to episode 89 with Kevin Belanger from the Rails to Trail Conservancy, we talked a bit about the Rail Trail Hall of Fame. Back in 2007 the Katy Trail became the second member in the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame. Kim, who is a well versed solo female traveller, took a little over 5 days to pedal from Clinton, Missouri to Machens, Missouri, staying in hotels and bnbs along with way while carrying everything she needed in her waterproof and dustproof Ortlieb bike panniers. www.murphologypodcast.com www.Patreon.com/Murphology

RAGBRAI 2022 is history, and what a ride it was! This was like my 25th or 26th RAGBRAI and I may have to call this year my favorite. The weather was beautiful and not only did I get to ride my bike all week, I was also lucky enough to be part of the RAGBRAI social media crew. It gave me a new and fun perspective on the ride that I thoroughly enjoyed. And the highlight of the week was meeting a famous YouTuber that I have been following for a long time. And omg he agreed to come on the podcast! So here it is….Ryan Van Duzer is on to share his RAGBRAI experience along with some of his other bicycle adventures. An unexpected canceled Sweden trip gave Duzer an opening in his schedule and he jumped on the chance to come to Iowa to enjoy RAGBRAI again. A lifetime Boulder, Colorado resident, Ryan has spent all of his life enjoying the outdoors and now inspires others to get out there. He documents his adventures on YouTube at DuzerTV. His amazing videos are the reason a group of us did the epic San Juan Mountain Hut to Hut ride back in 2020. You can hear about it in Episode 55. Duzer calls RAGBRAI the most amazing bike event in the world, and of course I agree. I love that he loves my home state of Iowa as much as I do. So here is Duzer. A few weeks ago I was in Colorado as part of the Ride the Rockies crew. Ride the Rockies is a 6 day Colorado bicycle tour that started way back in the mid eighties. This year riders tackled 8 mountain passes on their bicycles, almost 30,000 feet of elevation gain and not one but two days of over 100 miles of pedaling. I caught up with Jason Carolan from Flexential to get a recap on his week of biking in Colorado. Flexential has been supporting the ride for 8 years, and Jason is on to tell us about his company as well as his week on the bike. Well listeners, I did it! I rode my bicycle all the way across the United States! I biked with Team Biking to Remember. We started March 12 in San Diego, California and we made our way across 8 states using the Adventure Cycling Southern Tier maps. It took us 64 days and 3,080 miles to pedal from coast to coast and we reached the Atlantic Ocean on May 14th. Along the way we met up with Alzheimer’s Association chapters, held events and with the support of family, friends, and complete strangers we were able to raise over $32,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. I met up with Andrea Parrott, my co-host on the Just Go Bike podcast to talk about the second half of the adventure. I sat down with Jenny Lorenz to talk about our adventure in progress, biking across the United States. Jenny had a vision many years ago to bike across America after she retired. She also wanted to somehow give back and so she married her passion for biking with her interest in raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Jenny’s mom has been suffering with Alzheimer’s for over a decade. She recruited friends, including me, to join her on this epic adventure and we started back in mid March. We are using the Adventure Cycling Southern Tier route and going west to east. We started in San Diego and have pedaled across 7 states so far and now we are making our way through Florida. On the show this week I take some time to talk to the new interim ride director for Ride the Rockies. Bill Plock is a Colorado native and long time cyclist who is pretty pumped to take Ride the Rockies to the next level. Ride the Rockies is a multi day challenging event in Colorado that has been going on for 25 years! With 5 Continental Divide crossings and over 26,000 feet of climb, this year the ride takes you and your bike through some epic mountain passes that may make your legs burn from all that climbing, but will provide some great photo opportunities. You can still get registered, or learn more about the event at ridetherockies.com. Rebroadcast of a great episode. This week meet Henry Gold. Henry tells the frightening story of how he came face to face with an angry elephant while cycling, and lived to tell about it. He is also Founder and Director at TDA Global Cycling, an adventure cycling tour company with some epic bucket list expeditions available. Many years ago Henry had a crazy vision to create Tour d’Afrique. A test of mind, body, and bicycle, it was to be a bicycle race in Africa that takes cyclists north to south, from the pyramids of Giza to Cape Town. This dream became a reality in 2003, when 33 riders saddled up for the 4 month expedition and Tour d’Afrique still exists today as a popular tour, along with many other options for the cycling adventurer. Be sure to go to TDAglobalcycling.com. There is so much information, inspiration and many tour options are available. And consider me available if you need someone to go on one of their tours. :) www.tdaglobalcycling.com www.murphologypodcast.com
As of today I am taking a much needed rest day in Austin, Tx enjoying the luxury of a real bed while I stay with my brother and his family. Tomorrow we will be back at it, starting day 35 of 63 days. We are using the Adventure Cycling Southern Tier route and going west to east. We started in San Diego and have pedaled across California, Arizona, New Mexico and now we are about halfway through Texas. We have had great luck with weather and courteous drivers on the road, and I am happy to report my team are all still getting along after this much time together. Andrea from the Just GO Bike podcast called me and I gave her an update on my last few weeks on the road. So here is Andrea and I talking about life on a bike. If you didn't listen to this the first time, it's great info on an amazing place to ride. On the show today we have the Trail Manager for the Mickelson Trail, located in South Dakota, which has been a bucket list trail for me for quite a while. This Rails to Trail crushed limestone trail spans over 100 miles through the heart of the Black Hills. With 4 rock tunnels and over 100 bridges, this trail is open year round to bikers, hikers, and horseback riders. Dana Garry-Reiprich is the Trail Manager for the Mickelson Trail, and is on to tell us more about all that the Mickelson Trail has to offer. To learn more, the website is www.mickelsontrail.com and is loaded with information about the trail itself as well as the communities the trail goes through. Events are listed as well. You can donate to the Mickelson Trail efforts at parkswildlifefoundation.org. www.mickelsontrail.com www.parkswildlifefoundation.org www.murphologypodcast.com
An inspiring episode with a very inspiring person! This week meet Kymberly Byers, a cyclist, a bikepacker and a photographer who found purpose riding a bike and sharing the experiences with others. Kymberly pedaled into 26 states in 2020, was able to bikepack 100 consecutive days and shares some memories of this great adventure. We discuss bikepacking how-to and expert tips on how to bikepack in the most minimalistic way. Kymberly mentioned how important it is to stay in the moment and I find this simple advice quite meaningful, and more difficult to do than you think. www.instagram.com/gypsy_cyclist_222 Also find Kymberly Byers on Facebook and YouTube by name www.murphologypodcast.com
This week meet Jason Sumner. You probably already know that I am a co-host on another podcast called Just GO Bike. Recently Andrea and I caught up with Jason who is from the Ride the Rockies team. He is a long time cyclist and a Colorado Native living in Crested Butte. He is also a journalist and has authored the book: 75 Classic Rides Colorado. Ride the Rockies, a multi day tour that explores communities in Colorado, has many similarities to RAGBRAI, the 7 day tour across Iowa, and has the history to prove it. Back in 1985, Claire Martin, a Denver Post reporter, came to Iowa to ride RAGBRAI and was hooked. She went back to Colorado and pitched the idea to the Denver Post. A year later, Ride the Rockies was born! This is the interview of Jason, myself and Andrea to talk about Ride the Rockies. On the show today is J.D. Shaeffer. J.D. is an endurance junkie who has done ultra runs and even hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. Last summer he was able to save up money and get some time off work. The plan was to hike the PCT but an injury caused him to have to pivot from hiking to something else. Since he still had the time off, in a matter of a few weeks he found an old bike and decided to bike across the country by himself. See below for his route. It was August 31st when the group I was with ran into him one night outside of Confluence when he was just a few days from completing his journey. Today J.D. shares the story of his adventure riding his first long distance bicycle tour on the TransAmerica bicycle route. This was one of my favorite episodes from a while back! Today you are going to be listening to my interview with Reese Ruland who is a gravel racer living in Fort Collins, Co. She has a love for endurance racing that began as an ultra runner. Along the way she has had great opportunities to connect with inspirational guys like Allen at Scratch Labs and work with bicycle companies like Specialized before settling in to the life of biking in Colorado. She works and trains hard and it shows, she is kicking ass in the sport of gravel and has a fleet of Cervelo bikes to prove it. Along with a sponsorship from Cervelo, she is also sponsored by others including Fat Tire which is a tasty craft beer made by New Belgium Brewing. Um, yes please. Reese not only has a lot of passion for her sport, she also has passion for the cycling community through some pretty cool organizations like the Cycle Effect. It is obvious she contributes a lot to the gravel community. Take a listen to hear Reese talk gravel, nutrition and her French bulldog Loaf. www.murphologypodcast
On the show today is Kathy Browning. She lives in a small town in Wyoming and is a big fan of fat biking. She started writing a blog about her experiences and as it grew in popularity, it turned into a website called FatBikeGirl.com that is a great resource for everything bike related including fat bike events, product reviews, and inspiration. And of course all of Kathy’s blog posts! Now in addition to the FatBikeGirl.com website, there is a private Facebook group, also called Fat Bike Girl for women to share successes and to also ask questions. I found Kathy and her story to be truly inspiring. Today I celebrate episode 100! I wanted to take a moment to thank YOU for being a Murphology Podcast listener. It means so much to me. I absolutely love the opportunity to talk with bike-minded people and share their stories with you. To celebrate 100 episodes, I asked Andrea Parrott to come on the show and she put me in the hot seat. Andrea and I are co-hosts on another podcast called Just Go Bike that focuses on the 7 day bike tour in Iowa called RAGBRAI. Andrea asked me great questions about the podcast as well as questions about me personally. Thank you Andrea, it was fun to reminisce about episodes and events from the past! I randomly ran into these two last summer (July, 2021) while biking and they are as amazing in real life as they are in their book! So cool to meet them both. Ward and Jacky Budweg are on the show this week. They published a book called The World at 10mph. This book is the result of a 3 year worldwide bicycle journey Ward and Jacky went on that started with a clever pre-nup, involved 7 years of planning and ended up being over 33,000 miles of bicycle travel. It is not only a great adventure, it is also a great love story. If you would like to get a copy of The World at 10mph, go to Amazon or your local bookstore. Or send Ward and Jacky a message via their social media sites and they may offer you a signed copy. You can also find Ward and Jacky on Facebook. www.murphologypodcast.com www.amazon.com/World-10-MPH-Mast…ook/dp/B08CVTZYT5
Anna Abrams is on the show today to chat about riding a bike tour solo, but not alone. Self described as sporty but not outdoorsy, in 2021 Anna tackled RAGBRAI, a 7 day bicycle tour (and camping event) where cyclists pedal across the state of Iowa in the heat and humidity summer brings. She wanted insight on what exactly she had signed up for, so she created a Facebook group called RAGBRAI Newbies with the hope she could spark conversation with strangers, and answer some of the questions she had as a first timer. This private group grew quickly with friendly fellow first timers along with seasoned athletes who had done the ride before. Anna quickly learned doing an event solo did not mean she was alone. She shares a bit about successfully completing her first year doing a long distance tour, she did it even though she broke her elbow just weeks before! Anna will be coming back for her second RAGBRAI in 2022 and she is so excited to continue to keep the RAGBRAI Newbies group going, it is such a great resource for this year’s round of newbies! www.murphologypodcast.com https://www.patreon.com/murphology www.ragbrai.com
Meet Kasey Clark. Kasey, a cyclist and organic farmer, is on to talk about how he decided to ride every gravel mile in Loudoun County, Virginia to raise money for a nonprofit called American’s Routes. His one day journey took him on some of the nation’s oldest and most beautiful rural roads. He was able to raise almost $8,000, there is a film about this event on YouTube, and he even made it on NPR! In addition to riding some epic adventures, Kasey saw a need for a gravel bike club for all abilities of cyclists, with a focus on fun. From this need, Kasey formed the VeloPigs. With over 1,300 members, the club meets weekly for rides, socializing, and maybe a beer or two. https://americasroutes.com www.velopigs.org https://www.instagram.com/velopigs/ https://youtu.be/-WmPccqMwp8 www.murphologypodcast.com https://www.patreon.com/murphology
A favorite episode to re-share. Would you hop on a fat bike and race in 8 below zero weather? How about mountain bike over rocks, rocks and more rocks? Kristen Heath is on this week to talk about her adventures, and pushing your limits on the bike. Her advice? If you want to, you can. And it's not the end of the world to fail. Each week we will get to know new people and explore great destinations to ride your bike. Learn tips and listen as guests talk about their adventures on the bicycle. One of my favorite episodes! After this interview, I want and need to go visit Pueblo, Colorado! Full of scenic views, riverfront, and interesting history, it is also home to 45 MILES of singletrack! Meet Adam this week, president of the Southern Colorado Trail Builders nonprofit group. This guy is an expert on keeping the singletrack in great condition. He also bikepacks and has been working with his young daughter to enjoy the bike as much as he does. Great interview with Adam about Pueblo, bikepacking, singletrack, and good parenting! www.southerncoloradotrailbuilders.org www.murphologypodcast.com
On the show today is Kathryn Taylor from Girls Gone Gravel. Taylor is a former triathlete turned gravel enthusiast who saw a need for a place for women to learn, inspire and connect with a community in the gravel world. So Girls Gone Gravel was born. With over 11,000 followers on their Facebook group, it is obvious she was right. Coming up in April of 2022 Girls Gone Gravel will be hosting the very first Gone Graveling Festival which will take place in Bentonville, Arkansas. Kathryn is going to tell us her story, and more about women in gravel. It is really amazing how many women have become involved in the great community thanks to Kathryn’s middle of the night idea. www.girlsgonegravel.com www.murphologypodcast.com https://www.patreon.com/murphology
On the show today is Brannon Pack. Brannon is the Director of Cycling Tourism in Fayetteville, Arkansas. If you haven’t been to Fayetteville yet, get it on your calendar! They are nestled in the Ozark Mountains and offer some of the best mountain biking in the nation, with easy access trails that are well constructed and well maintained. They are a designated Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists and in addition to mountain biking, they offer about any kind of cycling you may be into, including a 50 mile protected paved path. For only the second time on U.S. soil – Fayetteville is set to welcome the world for the 2022 Walmart UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships! Cyclo-cross is one of the best fan friendly styles of bike racing with athletes racing on grass, sand, mud while having to overcome obstacles that may require carrying the bike. All this is happening while fans are able to get up close to cheer on their favorites. As Brannon says, cyclo-cross celebrates the wilder side of racing, with fans in the mix. On the show today is Daniel Troia, The Travelin Dude. He is a filmmaker who at one point did a little questioning of life, needed some soul searching and hopped on his bike to find answers. He has been on some epic bike touring adventures, and on at least two tours he took along his GoPro to film his experience. His first film, called “Two Wheels to Freedom”, documents his tour from Rome to Amsterdam and is full of adventure and beautiful scenery. Bike touring to Daniel is all about the freedom where you just get on a bike, ride, and let the adventures come to you. His second film documents his tour across the U.S. where he took off on his loaded Surly Long Haul Trucker without food and money, hoping to find both along the way. Not only was he able to find both while biking for 7 months, he also discovered great human connection with strangers. This film will be out soon and is called "We Are All In This Together". Daniel described it perfectly when he said there is something about the constant rhythm of the pedals plus the fresh air that stimulates the brain. This guy gives off a contagious positive vibe and I can’t wait to see what he does next. https://www.weareallinthistogethermovie.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJfFJoK5nffUxmyC48pvBGA https://www.instagram.com/the_travelin_dude/ www.murphologypodcast.com https://www.patreon.com/murphology
You may or may not know that in addition to the Murphology Podcast, I am a co-host on another podcast called Just Go Bike. It is about topics more specific to the weeklong bike ride across Iowa near and dear to me called RAGBRAI which stands for The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, a ride that started back in 1973. This episode I am going to play the most recent Just Go Bike podcast where myself and Andrea Parrott discuss all things RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI Registration for 2022 is now open and we will talk about important dates along with what’s changed and what is new, including why RAGBRAI is labelled as 8 days, what’s up with no more lottery, and moving the route announcement to Friday. Plus so much more RAGBRAI related info! Also, Andrea will give us the scoop on Ride the Rockies. And as a tribute to RAGBRAI co-founder John Karras, who passed away recently, you will hear a replay of his interview from the very first episode of Just Go Bike. www.RAGBRAI.com www.iowabikeexpo.com www.murphologypodcast.com
Considered the first rail-to-trail in the United States, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail is located in Wisconsin, east of LaCrosse. With three rock tunnels and five small towns along its 32.5-mile route, this limestone rail-trail is obviously a favorite Wisconsin bicycling destination with over 60,000 people visiting each year. Traveling between Sparta and Elroy, the trail stretches through the communities of Norwalk, Wilton and Kendall, passing by wetlands, prairies, and of course farmland. I recently biked part of the Elroy-Sparta trail with a large group of friends, along with a stop at the Potosi Brewery. Here is my recap. www.travelwisconsin.com www.murphologypodcast.com
On this podcast episode meet Jason from Gravel Worlds, where the mission is to create a fun, kick-ass gravel event for all levels of athletes to enjoy.
On this episode meet Kevin Belanger, Manager of Trail Planning for the Great American Rail-Trail at Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. Rails-to-Trails is the largest non profit organization related to trails. Since 1986, they have worked to bring the power of trails to more communities across the country, serving as the national voice for the rail-trail movement. Get this, to date there are overt 24,000 miles of rail-trails on the ground nationwide and more than 8,000 miles of rail-trails ready to be built, and their focus is on linking these corridors—creating trail networks that connect people and places, bringing transformative benefits to communities all across the country. Kevin’s focus is on the Great American Rail-Trail which is an effort to connect a multi-use trail across the country and so far they are over half done with 2,000 miles completed. Chances are high you have spent some time on a rail-trail and it is nice to know along with local supporters, there is a national organization working hard to help communities create a safe, seamless and scenic pathway which can have big economic benefits too. https://www.railstotrails.org/ https://www.railstotrails.org/greatamericanrailtrail/ https://www.traillink.com/ https://www.bywayofthetrail.com/ www.murphologypodcast.com www.Patreon.com/Murphology
On this episode meet the Founder and Owner of Ladies AllRide, Lindsey Richter. Ladies AllRide is an organization dedicated to growing the community of female mountain bikers. Lindsey and her team of coaches travel the country hosting women's mountain bike skills camp where they aim to inspire women to face fears, believe in themselves and get RAD on their mountain bikes! Mountain biking taught Lindsey life is about CREATING yourself, not finding yourself and she welcomes all levels of riders, from beginner and beyond. Lindsey is a great resource for women who are into the sport of mountain biking, no matter what level of experience. I recently attended the skills camp in Whitefish, Montana and was able to take some time to speak with Lindsey about Ladies AllRide and how she helps women find confidence, overcome fears and celebrate the joy of mountain biking. www.ladiesallride.com www.murphologypodcast.com
On this episode I am going to provide you with a recap of my recent bicycle trip, riding the Great Allegheny Passage and a bit of the C&O Canal Towpath. Around the same time Hurricane Ida was heading towards the east coast, myself and 7 friends loaded up our bicycles and made our way to Pittsburgh. The plan was to be self-contained and ride 7 days from Pittsburgh to Washington DC via the Great Allegheny Passage and then the C&O towpath. We would be staying in hotels and AirBnb’s along the way. Well we did indeed ride 7 days but the remnants of the hurricane altered our route. www.murphologypodcast.com
On this episode meet Whitney Washington. She is a filmmaker intrigued by human powered travel and had a dream to go on a long distance bike tour. She dusted off her childhood mountain bike and said to herself, what am I capable of? And guess what, she hopped on that bike in Washington DC and is currently about halfway across the US. She is loosely following the Great American Rail Trail and I think you will find her story inspiring. Whitney talks about her transformative journey and the strength she has gained with every pedal stroke. 183.9 mph!! Today meet Denise Mueller, the fastest cyclist on earth. Denise holds the world record for paced bicycle land speed, pedaling her bicycle at an unbelievable speed of 183.9 mph! Back in 2016 Denise was successful at setting the first ever Women’s paced bicycle land speed record of 147.7 mph. But she didn’t stop there. On September 16, 2018 Denise shattered the overall record of 167 mph with a speed of 183.9 mph. This type of record was invented by Charles “Mile-a-Minute Murphy” who drafted a train to set a 60 mph record at the end of the 19th century. In order to accomplish this feat, a mile of plywood sheets were attached to the railroad ties ensuring that Charles would have a smooth surface riding behind the train. Google Denise Mueller and watch the video of her riding her bike and earning the world record. It will make your heart race. And also check out her website, theprojectspeed.com. www.theprojectspeed.com www.murphologypodcast.com
On this episode it is all about biking in the state of Oregon. Dj Waldron is on the show to talk about some group rides in Oregon he has been part of along with some rides on the old bucket list. Oregon seems to have it all with mixed elevation, scenic views and rides that take you right to the ocean. I did a little bike riding in the Deschutes National Forrest when I was in Bend a few months ago and promised myself I would make a return trip to ride some more. And after talking with DJ I think I know which rides I will be signing up to be part of. www.murphologypodcast.com www.ridetherimoregon.com https://action.lung.org/site/TR?fr_id=22051&pg=entry
Recently I completed another RAGBRAI and wanted to provide a recap of the event. This is not a race event, but a bicycle tour with riders of all abilities. It is a supported event that showcases Iowa and small town living. It is a chance to slow down and take in miles and miles of corn and bean fields with over 10,000 cycling friends. It is a one of a kind experience I would highly recommend. This 7 day ride takes place the last full week of July each year and typically Iowa weather is steamy, with humidity and temps in the high 80’s. It started in 1973 when two Des Moines Register newspaper journalists decided to hop on their bikes and ride across the state of Iowa, with a plan to document the week and call it work. Daily mileage varies between 50 and 100 miles and a typical week is about 450 miles, traveling across the entire state. Today hear more about the event as well as some of the people who participate in RAGBRAI. www.ragbrai.com www.bicycleresort.com www.nelsonvails.com www.projectspeed.com www.murphologypodcast.com
On the show today is Mandy Hansel who recently completed and won the Women’s Fat Bike Division at the Lutzen 69er. The Lutsen 99er is an ultra-marathon mountain biking event in Lutsen, MN. There are 4 distance options, catering to all riding levels and abilities. The course takes cyclists on snowmobile and ski trails, Forest Service roads, and a bit of pavement and single track. The event begins and ends at Lutsen Mountains. Mandy also runs a great non-profit called the Storm Trail Race Series in the Minnesota area. And I want to give Jacquelyn a shout out for becoming the newest Patreon. You can support my podcast at www.Patreon.com/Murphology www.murphologypodcast.com www.lutzen99er.com www.thestormtrs.org
This week it is all about the Paul Bunyan Trail which stretches from the Crow Wing State Park to Bemidji in Northern Minnesota. www.paulbunyantrail.com www.murphologypodcast.com
Rob and Todd are on the show today to talk about their Great Divide Adventure through Montana. In early June these guys loaded up their custom Salsa bikepacking bicycles and headed north to ride a portion of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. They rode 10 days of forest roads, single track and other varieties of terrain which provided them with over 40,000 feet of climb. They were able to ride with some of the racers doing the Tour Divide which is a race from the border of Canada to the border of Mexico. I would consider both of these guys elite athletes who train and race bikes year round, but they made it clear that if people train properly, have the right equipment, the right attitude, and enough time, anyone can tackle this route. You can head over to the Adventure Cycling website for more information about the route and I also found a great website about the race called tourdivide.org. www.murphologypodcast.com www.adventurecycling.org www.tourdivide.org
Today meet Diane who is on to talk about some of her bike adventures utilizing charter services who handle all the prep work, logistics and hauling of her gear. What better way to see beautiful views of the United States by bicycle, without the hassle of planning the who, what, when and where. She hasn’t always been a cyclist, but got into cycling as a way to cross train for cross country ski racing. She is going to tell us about some of the places she has gone with her bike, and also get a bit into her other two sports which are cross country ski racing and racing high performance catamarans. Sounds like a great way to stay fit all year round! www.birkie.com www.pkbelly.com www.bikemaine.com www.cycleadirondacks.com www.ragbrai.com www.murphologypodcast.com
Today is all about the Wabash Trace Nature Trail. This unpaved crushed limestone rail trail stretches 63 miles through scenic southwest Iowa countryside, starting in Council Bluffs, Iowa and passes through some great communities including Mineola, Silver City, Malvern, Imogene, Shenandoah, Coin and Blanchard. Such a great way to generate tourism for small communities. The website is wabashtrace.org and a yearlong pass is only $20. Daily passes are $2. Most of the trail is lined with a tree canopy and this rail trail included over 70 bridges! On the podcast this week you will hear from a couple of the founders of this privately owned trail, who remain very active in keeping it maintained, and you will also hear from one of the participants in the recent Birds and Bees supported ride I did with the charter service called Pork Belly Ventures. www.murphologypodcast.com www.wabashtrace.org www.pkbelly.com
Today meet Damien Boley, he is the Race Director for Humphrey’s Gravel Grinder which is a gravel race that starts and ends in Smithville, Missouri and offers multiple distance options, from 25 miles all the way up to 200 miles. I recently went to Smithville to do the 50 mile Humphrey’s Gravel Grinder and had a blast. Damien is an avid cyclist who participates in some pretty cool bike packing events in addition to all kinds of local gravel riding. Along with his day job, and his role as race director, he owns a bike co-op in downtown Smithville, and guess what, he is also the mayor! No wonder the town is so bike friendly. Use code “Murphology” to get 50% off your registration to the next Humphrey’s Gravel Grinder. How cool is that! You can go to bikereg.com for more information. I can’t guarantee you good weather for the race, but if you go to Smithville, I am certain you will have a good time.
Today meet Scott Grow who is the Tour Director for a local bike club in Iowa called Hawkeye Bicycle Association. The HBA has been going strong since 1971 and the organization promotes bicycling safety and advocates bicycle friendly communities, roads and trails, as well as bicyclist rights. Scott is going to get into the ins and outs of group riding when not everyone is at the same speed. It’s great information if you are part of a club, or want to start a bicycle club in your community. If you are local and would like to join or ride with the Hawkeye Bicycle Association, or if you need some inspiration for your own bike club, check out hawkeyebike.org. www.hawkeyebike.org www.murphologypodcast.com
On the show today is gravel racer Kae Takeshito. Growing up in Japan, Kae always looked at the bicycle as a means of transportation rather than recreation and she didn’t get the gravel racing bug until adulthood. It is obvious she is a quick learner as she continues to embrace and dare I say she enjoys the sufferfest of endurance racing in terrible conditions like rain, cold and mud. On this episode she is going to give highlights of her most recent race, and 1st place win, of the Iowa Wind and Rock which is a 340 mile gravel race. I am so impressed with Kae’s physical and mental capabilities and you can bet I will be keeping an eye on what she does next. www.IowaWindandRock.com is the website if you want to find out more about this race. Also, if you go to Kae Takeshito’s Facebook page you can read her amazing and detailed recap of the event. www.iowawindandrock.com www.murphologypodcast.com
Today meet Chris Van Roekel, a retired Veteran who is on to talk about off season training. So when RAGBRAI offered a virtual event in 2020, Chris saw this as an opportunity to rediscover his love of cycling. He completed Virtual RAGBRAI and enjoyed those miles so much he just kept on pedaling. What started as a mission to burn 1,000 calories of activity a day turned into something that offered Chris both mental and physical benefits that have paid off in many ways. Chris is shooting for 5,000 miles on the bike this year and by the sounds of it, he is well on his way to his goal. He is so right when he says the more training time you put in, the more capable you are going to be to do things you didn’t realize you could. If you are on Facebook, check out his podcast called Disgruntled Veteran Productions https://soundcloud.com/justgobike/episode-16-mountain-bike-flat-midwest www.rwb.org www.murphologypodcast.com
Today meet Tammy from the Pork Belly Ventures. For almost 30 years Tammy and her brother Pete, along with a top notch crew have been providing support to cyclists, supporting them during Iowa's 7 day tour called RAGBRAI along many other Midwest bike rides. Amenities with Pork Belly Ventures are many...from hot showers and bottomless coffee each morning, tent set up and take down, to PHAT trailers which feature a bed and air conditioning. Their support could mean the difference between a complicated, exhausting bike trip and a carefree athletic adventure. Be sure to check out the Pork Belly Ventures website at pkbelly.com for more information on all they offer as well as bike rides they support. And if you are listening to this episode before May of 2021, register to ride the Birds and Bees ride in Council Bluffs and you can ride with me! If you click on the 'Murphology Outfitters' tab on my website, you will find a list of rides I will be on this year. www.pkbelly.com www.murphologypodcast.com
This week I am going to respond to some listener mail. Questions about my sleep set-up, how to get stronger on the bike, first time bikepacking, and tracking miles are on the agenda. Also, I have joined Patreon which is a platform loyal listeners can subscribe to for bonus content. It costs a few bucks per month and helps me keep the podcast going. Of course you can continue to listen for free!! www.patreon.com/murphology www.instagram.com/murphologypodcast
All right Pork Tornadoes fans, this week Mike Schulte is on the show to talk about his perspective on what it is like to play in a band during RAGBRAI. The Pork Tornadoes is a popular band in the Midwest and cyclists who spend the last week of July each year pedaling across Iowa as part of the longest, largest and oldest recreational bicycle touring event in the world known as RAGBRAI, have most likely experienced this great band. Mike is the drummer and I can only imagine what it is like to be on stage, playing popular sing-a-long covers to thousands of high energy cyclists. I can tell you first hand that they are such a fun band to experience. And it is pretty cool to hear Mike’s story about getting back into cycling. Look for the Pork Tornadoes on any of the social media sites to find more info as well as contact info to get them to play at your next event. https://linktr.ee/theporktornadoes info@porktornadoes.com https://www.stitcher.com/show/the-confused-breakfast www.ragbrai.com www.murphologypodcast.com
Did you know there is a bicycle themed resort at the base of a mountain in Colorado Springs?? I was lucky enough to spend a weekend at the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort and let me tell you, Torie the owner has it figured out! Torie Giffin, the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort’s visionary and intrepid leader, has always led with her heart and passion for others. Hospitality is at her core. So, when she decided to create a resort for cyclists there was no question she was going to make it great. During my visit, even though it was colder than normal and there was snow on the ground, the resort was buzzing with energy. 47 bicycle themed rooms on 4 acres of space. Along with bicycle events throughout the year, every Saturday year round Torie leads the Buffalo Lodge bike tribe on a bike ride so I was able to join in on the fun after our interview. She took us through Garden of the Gods and I was in awe the whole ride. www.murphologypodcast.com www.bicycleresort.com http://bicycleresort.com/event/daniels-walk-run-roll-fundraiser-2020/?instance_id=23437 https://www.usaprocyclingchallenge.com/ https://www.ridetherockies.com/rtr-getaways/gold-rush-gravel/ https://www.pikespeakapex.com/ https://www.lymevents.com/chasing-santa-5k-cycling-15k.html http://www.granfondoguide.com/Events/Index/5357/rampart-rager

Sylva is on the show today. She’s an writer and a biker, and she has a can do attitude. She goes through life expecting good things, and good things come her way. Reminds me of the mantra: whatever you believe, you are correct. She checked off a bucket list item which was to ride her bicycle across the US, and she did it solo. A 4,000 mile bike tour across the US is an epic accomplishment that many people only dream about. She documented her epic adventure and then wrote a book to document it, but also to inspire and empower others. Her book is called Finding the Sylva Lining and you can learn more about it on her website which is www.thesylvalining.com. Thanks Sylva for sharing your story! www.murphologypodcast.com www.thesylvalining.com Insta: www.instagram.com/the_sylva_lining FB: www.facebook.com/thesylvalining
This week meet Brian O'Leary, executive director of the Dream Team which is a five month program that partners youth with adult mentors to provide a unique opportunity to build relationships, achieve personal growth, and learn life skills. They train and prepare as a team to ride every mile of RAGBRAI. Their mission is to use the power of a bicycle to assist youth in developing a positive approach to life’s challenges. Brian is going to give us more info on the The Dream Team, including how you can help this Central Iowa nonprofit group. www.dreamteamdesmoines.org www.ragbrai.com www.murphologypodcast.com
This week meet Bonnie Gagnon. To quote Bonnie, she said there is something magical about riding a bike that helps us forget our misery. So true. Bonnie is a Lemierre’s syndrome survivor who has mastered how to suffer properly in epic bike events like Leadville 100 and Tour Divide which she called an amazingly grueling fantastic time. She’s also into adventure racing and is on a team hoping to do Eco Challenge which is affectionately called the World’s Toughest Race. Today Bonnie shares some adventure stories along with some great wisdom. I know l look forward to seeing what races she will do next and I will be cheering her on. www.instagram.com/loves_to_mtnbike www.murphologypodcast.com
This week Leah Fuller joins us to talk about her vision to be part of a group of like minded women who enjoy being outside on bikes. She discovered the Fearless Women of Dirt, a mountain biking group started by Josie Smith of Decorah Bicycles. It was in 2015 Josie started Decorah's first women's mountain biking group: Fearless Women of Dirt which has now expanded to multiple states. Josie also created a stand-alone website, www.josiebikelife.com, with hopes of inspiring women to experience the joy, healing, and liberation bicycles could offer. Leah was able to reach out to Josie to become an ambassador and started a chapter in her own community. This is Leah’s story of how she brought the Fearless women of dirt to life for women of all skill levels. If you are interested in starting a chapter in your community, check out www.fearlesswomenofdirt.com. www.fearlesswomenofdirt.com www.josiebikelife.com www.murphologypodcast.com www.linnareamtb.org
This week Dixon Novy from the Quad City Bicycle Club is on the show. This club has been around since the 60’s and their charter has been part of RAGBRAI for as long as the ride has existed. Dixon himself has biked a dozen RAGBRAIs and has been part of several overnight town committees who do all the planning and prepping for thousands of cyclists to camp. Dixon shares his take on what it is like to be part of the QCBC club and charter. www.qcbc.org www.murphologypodcast.com
This week Amy and Randy are on the show. This is a father daughter team that share a love of the high wheel bicycle, also known as the penny farthing. I am sure you have seen these bikes at some point, whether it was in a parade or some sort of historical event. The high wheeler was popular in the late 1800’s and both Amy and Randy have vintage bikes that they used to ride some epic adventures together. Most recently they biked from Michigan to Key West, averaging about 60 miles a day on their high wheelers. Today they are going to share their adventure. Enjoy! www.highwheelride.wordpress.com Facebook Page: Amy and Randy's Ride www.murphologypodcast.com
This week you get to meet author, cyclist, and Metro Atlanta Bike Mayor Pattie Baker who has written many books and blogs including the book Traveling at the Speed of Bike. She also has a great blog by the same name. A few months ago, after getting hit by a vehicle while riding her bike, she created the You Go Girl series where each day in August she blogged about an inspiring woman who makes it welcoming to ride bikes. She's an inspiration as well! www.travelingatthespeedofbike.com www.murphologypodcast.com www.peopleforbikes.org www.bikeleague.org
What do you do when you can't keep up on a group ride? My answer? Be first and and set the pace, or be last and ok with falling behind. This week I tackle some listener mail including how I am dealing with riding during a pandemic, memorable places I have ridden, and my favorite post ride snack. Email me your topic ideas at MurphologyPodcast@gmail.com MurphologyPodcast.com
This week we are connecting nature enthusiasts and cyclists through a nonprofit focused on pollinator habitat. For the last 5 or so years the gang at Milkweed Matters have set up booths on RAGBRAI in Iowa. They make seedballs made of dirt, clay and of course seeds and hand them out to cyclists who then toss them into appropriate places along the route. You may already know that the Milkweed plant is the only plant Monarchs lay their eggs on. I caught up with Founder and Chair of the Board Kelly to talk about how Milkweed Matters came to be, and what exactly they do for pollinators. www.milkweedmatters.org @monarchhabitatinitiative www.murphologypodcast.com
Today you meet Kathryn Schartz from Lawrence, Kansas. Kathryn really enjoys getting out on her bike and it shows. In 2020 she gave herself a weekly mileage goal of 250 miles, and at the time of this recording she has already surpassed 12,000 miles, including 13 century rides. I found her energy and story inspiring and hope you do as well. Enjoy! www.murphologypodcast.com
I recently completed an epic once in a lifetime adventure on my mountain bike with 7 friends, and wanted to tell you about it. The San Juan Hut System offers a variety of hut to hut backcountry tours including hiking, backcountry skiing and of course biking. We chose the Telluride to Moab trip which was about 200 miles spread out over 7 days, 6 nights and utilizing secondary dirt roads and singletrack. They provided multiple route options each day based on your skills that would get you to the next hut. The huts had no electricity or running water, but they provided shelter and they were fully stocked with food. Today I am going to give you the lowdown on the hut system, my bike and gear, and my thoughts on what each day was like. Be sure to check out sanjuanhuts.com for more information. Ward and Jacky Budweg are on the show this week. They recently published a book called The World at 10mph. This book is the result of a 3 year worldwide bicycle journey Ward and Jacky went on that started with a clever pre-nup, involved 7 years of planning and ended up being over 33,000 miles of bicycle travel. It is not only a great adventure, it is also a great love story. And Happy 21st Anniversary to the Budwegs! If you would like to get a copy of The World at 10mph, go to Amazon or your local bookstore. Or send Ward and Jacky a message via their social media sites and they may offer you a signed copy. Meet Coreen this week. She is a cancer survivor, a cyclist, marathoner, triathlete, and also a grandma. I caught up with her over on the Just Go Bike podcast to talk about some of her cycling adventures, with a focus on RAGBRAI. She has completed 30 RAGBRAI’s so far, which is the 7 day tour across Iowa that occurs every July. She rides each year with her brother, and even rode the year she was fighting (and beating) cancer. She has also done several cross country tours, races and rides that would make anyone envious! She calls her post cancer days...'Bonus Time'. Bonus time indeed. An amazing women to meet. www.murphologypodcast.com www.ragbrai.com www.pkbelly.com
Crystal Kovacs took the time to chat about her cycling experiences on this week’s episode. Crystal is a sponsored athlete who didn’t really get into cycling until her 40’s and it only took a couple of rides to get her hooked. Along with countless bikepacking and single track adventures with her family, she has also participated in some pretty intense gravel and dirt races such as the Dirty Kanza, the MAAH DAAH HEY singletrack race, and the Mid South Land Run. Cycling has changed her in so many ways and she even describes life as before biking vs now. Enjoy!
This week you get to listen to my recent interview on an episode of the Just Go Bike podcast. Along with most organized bike rides, the 7 day tour I talk about all the time, RAGBRAI, was a little different this year due to COVID. I tracked down a few people who participated in Virtual RAGBRAI to find out the what why when and how they spent their week. A big thanks to Josh, Gretchen, Sharon and Liz for taking the time to chat. It was fun hearing about how their week went and how even a virtual event can bring people together. Here are their stories. www.murphologypodcast.com www.justgobike.net www.RAGBRAI.com
Today marks the 50th episode of the Murphology Podcast. 50! I did a bit of reflecting on all the people I have met and interviewed and I am amazed at the quality of conversation in each episode. It really is true that no matter who you meet, every person has a good story to share. Each interview gave me inspiration to try something new, or revisit something I hadn't thought of for awhile, and added to my growing list of places to visit. With almost 10,000 listens, I am so thankful for each and every listener who takes the time to tune in. This week I had my very first guest back on the show. Dana Fortier was on to talk about adventures she has been on and she ended up turning the tables on me and had some questions to ask me which was pretty fun. Enjoy! www.murphologypodcast.com
Ready?
