I've long been obsessed with 80s music and especially have a sweet spot for the era around my birth year of 1982. As well as listening back to the old recordings from clubs, like the Muzic Box, Power Plant and Warehouse in Chicago, I have always especially loved the Hot Mix 5 shows on Chicago radio station WBMX.

Starting in 1981 the shows ran alongside the advent and development of house music and saw the DJs develop a high-energy style of playing short sections and edits of club hits of the day. They'd create hour-long mixes on reel-to-reel and deliver them to the station and these mixes became famous throughout the world.

So here I present three, hour-long mixes and set the year as 1984. So it is a collection of pre and proto-house. 1984 was when the first true Chicago house productions began to be released. These are tracks that influenced the formation of house and were important in the clubs and on the radio in Chicago in these formative years.

62 tracks over 180 minutes that took me 6 weeks to edit and 38 years to find and collect.

I've tagged every track with some notes in the comments because when the show was live I was already getting ID requests and when I tried to make a Spotify playlist for a friend using some of these tunes a load of them didn't show up so I guess Shazam might have a few problems also. Plus it's fun to tell some stories of the records and add context and make connections for those of us who aren't super nerds.

Its the only train station in Australia that is only ​accessible by boat or train.​ ​It's named after Mt Wondabyne, located adjacent to the station across the bay, known as Mullet River or Mullet Creek.

​It has mad eerie weather and there is often mist on the water. Its beautiful. There are "squatter" houses along a few of the creeks and can be seen from the train, which used to be fishermen's huts​ ​all these leased houses are in a National Park​ ​​so cannot be bought or sold, but can only be occupied by other members of a family.

​This mix series is inspired by this place.

The Boom Bap Collection.

Either good hip hop mixes are hard to come by these days or I just don't know where to look! Hip hop was/is my first musical love, and I've been on the lookout for good hip hop mixes for years - they only seem to pop up now and again through someone’s diligent Soundcloud scouring or from a house DJ going for something different. So a hip hop mix was naturally the first thing that sprung to mind when I was asked to do a podcast for musicforfriends. I've put together a collection of tracks from some of my favourite producers and MC's - some you will have heard before, some you won't.

Even though this selection isn't technically inspired by him, the mix is dedicated to a great friend of mine: Michael Russell aka Russ. Russ is a guy who literally eats, sleeps and breathes tunes. He's someone who I can always go to with anything music related and one of my biggest musical inspirations, as it were.

Anyway, this mix was done with the car/bus/train in mind, starting off slow and building all the way through…a journey through the world of real hip hop as I see it. Hopefully you’ll enjoy these classics as much as I do.

Over the following years he was involved in a few parties in and around Birmingham hosting events at venues such as the custard factory, the boiler room and his last event being a warehouse party with Audiofly and Adam Shelton headlining. Adam has also been fortunate to have a residency down in London for Transient at the horse and groom as well as playing in Poland including Piekarnia, Cien Club, Lodz and Poznan.After putting on these parties Adam lost his passion in music and was unsure of what musical direction to take. This quickly changed when the Below parties launched in Birmingham. House music is now very much at the forefront of his passions, over the past six months he has been in the studio working constantly on productions. A few of his productions have started to get interest from the likes of Spencer Parker, Kevin Griffiths Burnski and Jamie Jones and hopes to have some very good news soon regarding releases! For those of you who know Arthur you will know how much of a rarity such a thing as this would be. But here it is. A fine selection of trippy rude instrumental hip hop tracks taken from mine and Arthur's private collections. One on one off, vinyl records, turntables, cups of tea and the usual ;-)

Recorded in an old school during the week when everyone else was at work (hence the title). This was in the final months of hanging out we had together before Arthur's daughter Marla was born and I upped sticks and moved to Australia. I have fond memories of this period.
