Transunion puts out a report each quarter showing stats and trends.... I know... yawn. But it can be very telling to see what kinds of trends are out there with new credit card accounts, balances, and new personal loans.
Friends, it looks a little scary to me. Balances are up almost 15%, new cards are up over 20%, and new personal loans are skyrocketing. We know why- the cost of living is out of control, inflation is for real, incomes are not increasing in sync with what it costs to survive. It's a problem and the data is showing what people are doing. We are relying more and more on debt to help make ends meet. But it's going to cost in the form of interest and fees. Slippery slope.

Debt management plans and debt settlement companies are two VERY different things. Their business model is different, their impact on your credit is different and most people don't know they are two very different entities.
Debt management plans are non-profits with certified credit counselors (which require 60 hours of training and passing an intense exam through FINRA and they help negotiate terms to HELP you get your debts paid back by negotiating lower APRs and beneficial terms to make on time and total repayment.
Debt settlement companies are out to make money, serving themselves first, and then, after having your credit destroyed with late payments, your accounts being closed by the creditor, late fees added and possibly new collections or charge-offs now being created, they wait until your creditor and you have been hurt by lack of repayment methods and TRY to negotiate terms to settle for less than owed. VERY different ways to approaching debt that might be strangling you. Consider a debt management plan over a debt settlement plan.
I had mentioned credit.org in the episode, and I have NO affiliation with them, they are just one of the bigger good guys there to help if you need help paying off debt and want to consider options.

You may have heard me preach and teach about how too high of credit card balances can lower your score, not having long/deep credit or too many inquiries can keep your score low. Of course collections reporting or late payments are negative marks that will lower your score.

Do disputes impact your credit profile and scores? You betcha! I have seen where many "credit repair companies" will just go in an dispute everything listed on your credit report. I suppose that is one way to go about it. I don't love that plan.
A dispute will temporarily improve your credit score because that "thing" you are disputing is removed from the credit scoring algorithm (that negative mark is temporarily removed) for the first 30 days. If it is found that your dispute is not valid, the remarks stay attached to that tradeline.
When it comes to a mortgage, when disputes are listed, and over a specific amount, it can cost you where your dispute has to be removed or you must pay down that amount of the collection a dispute might be attached to.
You really don't want to be making changes to your credit profile in the middle of a loan application as it can impact your approval.
Here are the numbers for each of the credit reporting bureaus to call and request the removal of the dispute language:
Equifax 800-493-1058
Experian 800-846-5279
Transunion 800-916-8800

Using credit and loans to leverage oneself to do more with what you have is likely the goal. For instance, putting down a required down payment and then financing your home vs. saving $400,000 to pay cash helps you be a homeowner much sooner in life. But what happens when you feel too stretched, over-leveraged and unsure if you can make the payments? That is the reality for tens of millions of Americans, right now. In fact, over 20 million people are several months late on their electric bill, at risk of being turned off. With record breaking borrowing, payments and nearly all-time high's of APRs, at least in the most recent few decades (which might be your entire lifespan so far!), many people are feeling the pressure and not sure what to do.

Many people had purchased a new car in the last year or so, millions more than "usual." What's interesting is the average car price, loan amount and what now stands as the average new car payment and length of the loan term. I bring you this information because I am predicting a wave of repossessions based on the loose standards that the auto financing industry has followed since late 2020. With very little in the way of standards to ensure people can actually afford the monthly car payments, I believe repo's will surge and many people will experience damage to their credit profile (and wallet) because of it.

I speak with so many people that say they are "working on their credit." When I ask them what that means to them, they share all sorts of answers but it is often along the lines of: paying my bills on time, not allowing new collections, or disputing prior negative accounts. That's just maintenance and a little temporary help. If you have prior negatives, and they are truly yours, disputing will be a temporary fix and the dispute removed within 30 days. You you should be paying your bills on time anyway! That is not "working on" that is simply maintenance.
Working on credit should mean improving. So removing or settling past mistakes (sometimes, not always!), getting new and positive tradelines and keeping your debt utilization low. That is "working on" your credit profile. Lower credit scores costs you more in interest charges so work on getting your scores as high as possible!

Ever feel like success is for other people? That it can't happen to you or for you? I want to introduce you to an awesome couple, Nick and Brooke. They believed that too. But thankfully, they listened to some people in their lives, got into action, and are living a very different life this year than years past. They didn't come from money, no hand outs, no special programs. They sought advice, got into action, created a budget and decided to stop living in a state of scarcity! You too are worthy of abundance! It starts with changing our mindset, getting into action to remedy our wrong doings, and in that responsibility, comes reward. Listen to their story, and perhaps yours can be just as successful. I believe it can!

If someone or a company suggests you use a strategy called credit card stacking to leverage available credit to buy something large- think twice! Better yet, think twice more- it is usually NOT a good idea and I have experienced the "offer" of this before and so grateful I didn't do it. But I know of people who have and get absolutely buried in debt and feel like they are stuck because most of their payment is now going to interest and not paying down that balance. It could be a trap and will catch you and pull you down. Be careful if using this method of borrowing to purchase is something you are considering.
You may have seen commercials for Experian Boost- what is it and how can it benefit you? The commercials indicate an improvement in your credit score- but how much and by what means?

I have been asked recently about a collection account that was listed on a credit report, and there was a lot of mis-understanding about how long something reports on your credit report vs. when a creditor can sue you, create a judgement or ask the courts to make you pay an obligatory debt. So I wanted to explain what a Statute of Limitation is and also how long derogatory events stay on your credit report.
Here is a link of all the States' length of limitations: https://lendedu.com/blog/statute-of-limitations-on-debt-collection-by-state/

If you follow Dave Ramsey, chances are you LOVE Dave Ramsey. I know I am a fan. However, you may have heard him speak of credit in a way that may not settle so well with your intuition. Your gut says, "sure Dave, if you have lots of money in the bank to pay cash for things, you don't NEED credit, but for the rest of us, when you need to borrow, you need the proper credit profile."
At least that is what mine was saying when I heard him say having credit (debt) is bad, bad, bad. And for some people, that may be very true. Some people may constantly live outside of their means by overspending, overcharging, and splurging. Some people may shop for therapy or fill every single little gratification.
But for the rest of us, likely the majority, having a credit profile by borrowing money for a car, house and education may not bury us. And for some of us, we truly use the credit card for the rewards. At any level, I truly believe with everything in me you cannot get through life without having a credit profile. Employers, insurance companies and lenders use this as a measuring tool of your ability to manage money. Not a measurement of wealth, but showing your "behaviors" when it comes to paying on time and how much you borrow.
What are your thoughts? I would love to hear from you! Even if we don't see eye to eye, I grow in this life by learning of other perspectives and will keep an open mind to hearing yours. questions@creditkristi.com

If you have late payment history on a credit card, that payment history may be hurting your score when all other items on your credit are in good standing. Have you ever wondered if it is possible to have a lower interest rate on your existing credit cards? It's possible!! Listen in for tips and guidance on when you should ask for an interest rate reduction so more of your payment goes to paying down that balance!
Whether there is a balance or not, don't close that credit card! But ESPECIALLY if there is a balance- do NOT close that account! I see people do it out of emotion..."I'll show you.... I won't do business with you anymore" Only to learn it hurts their credit score and not the credit card company to do that! Or sometimes the thought it, "I have had this card since college and the interest rate isn't great" and so the card gets closed. But if that is your longest standing tradeline and you just ended it? That could really hurt your credit history (since it is based on the longest OPEN tradeline).
Listen in for a quick lesson and guidance from Credit Kristi.
There are several types of debt consolidation actions one can take to get out from under it. There are 0% balance transfer options, payment reduction programs, counseling options and loans that you can get that could potentially offer a better rate/payment than high-interest rate credit cards. What I do know to be true, is one day you may wake up, like I did, and feel so smothered by the debt load, it didn't feel like there were any options to get out from under it.
There are options, it is just a matter of knowing and understanding that there are resources and steps you can take. Depending on your choice to handle your debt will have an impact on your credit profile, history and score. So listen in, get to know your options and get into action.
Between May 2020-July 2020, credit card companies have reduced limits or closed credit cards entirely and involuntarily to more than 70 million people. This number may be growing as economic concerns linger and the pandemic continues.
With millions of people unemployed, millions not paying their mortgage, and many unknowns during this crazy year (then add an election in there!), credit card companies are scared they are going to be left holding the bag. Much like what happened back during the last recession, credit card companies are trying to limit their exposure to loss. However, if it is a credit card that you have had for many years, its closure can hurt your credit history and a reduced limit can hinder a great debt utilization factor which in turn would lower your credit scores.
Listen in for your warning and a few suggestions to help protect yourself as much as possible.
Many people have collections on their credit report. Some it seems its their only things reporting, and others are devastated when a collection appears and may be unsure what to do now.
There are different types of collections and the age, or how long it has been on your credit report has a lot to do with what might be the recommendation of how to handle it.
Now although I am not a credit repair agency nor can paying or not paying a collection have an adverse effect that is different than your goal, just having an understanding of collections can help you better decide what to do to handle that situation.
Medical vs. non-medical, true debt vs mis-reporting... it all has an impact on your if it hits your credit. Listen in to learn more!

There are literally millions of people in deferment or forbearance of their mortgage loan, and many more considering this route. This year sure has given a beating to many people. If you are in or considering one of these options, please listen in as there are some ramifications that are possibly unexpected.
I think those regulators that jumped in so quickly in March/April to bring about the CARES Act, that they didn't know the impact of a word. I think they intended on allowing a deferment, but said the word forbearance. And you will learn these are two very different animals.
However, if you are intending on refinancing or getting a new purchase mortgage loan in the near future, you may be halted because of this regulation that lies underneath a deferment or forbearance.
If you are looking to borrow money for a purchase of a car or home, you NEED a good credit score to not have to overpay in higher interest rates and unnecessary finance charges. It's THAT important! I have many people I speak with saying they have a great job history, money in the bank but they have a terrible credit score. I need you to hear this- we need to have a credit score that at least meets the minimum requirements before any of those other (important) factors matter. They do matter, but only AFTER you have the proper score. So let's commit, let's get into action and get those scores up so we can save you a ton of money over the life of that next loan.
***Please forgive the qualify- my computer picked up the wrong microphone and sometimes, it just doesn't make sense to re-record!
Looking to have a big improvement to your score, almost immediately? Listen in for my favorite tip to help make this happen. Now, it won't make any "bad" credit go away, but it will help drive your score up with longstanding history added and additional debt utilization in the mix of things.
If you have recently applied for credit, you know that about a week later there is something in the mail indicating the credit score that was used and the many reasons why your score "is what it is." if you have great credit, these reasons are going to make you mad! Because every one listed sounds derogatory! You could have a nearly perfect credit rating and have had great credit established for dozens of years... you will still read "risk factors" listed about your credit score. Rude! I am not sure why the bureaus go about it this way, but if you are looking for a compliment, it's not coming in these remarks- NO MATTER WHAT! Listen in to hear some of the remarks listed under nearly perfect credit and maybe you won't feel bad when you see your own!
Ever wonder what Credit Karma really....is? Many people have asked me, so I have answered! Listen in to learn what Credit Karma is up to and although they provide several of your "scores" for free... they have a motive!
Ever wonder the impact one late payment can have on your credit? I know we have all been there- you get busy and forgot about that credit card payment that was due or thought something was set up on auto pay only to learn it didn't really "take" and now... you are late on your payment and it's being reported on your credit report. Let's dive in to what kind of impact that has on your credit score and credit profile in today's episode.
When discussing credit, I often hear people that have negative marks on their credit report say they are going to dispute those marks. All fine and well if it is actually not accurate. But if you truly forgot to pay that last utility bill when you moved last (and ended up with a collection) or you really did forget to make that credit card payment (and ended up with a 30-day late payment) then a dispute is only a temporary help to your credit score. When that dispute is investigated and proven to be valid, the dispute is removed and your score is impacted negatively. But there is a potential BIGGER problem when you have disputes and are applying for a mortgage. Listen in for more!
There is so much misunderstanding when it comes to credit and what is reported, what is not, what matters and what does not. Listen in as I demystify a few myths out there when it comes to what is reported or important on your credit.
