Yoga is an ancient practice with many non-physical branches. The few ancient physical postures that did exist were closer to a sitting practice than anything else. In the 1920’s Tirumalai Krishnamacharya added Scandinavian/Western gymnastic type movements into the physical posture portion of Yoga. This series is inspired by him & his alchemy. This is a Classic Exercise that is often neglected. Starting from standing the goal is to bend the ankles, knees, and hips while simultaneously keeping your chest up as high as possible and only then setting an object down on a surface. It sounds simple but the execution and practice are fraught with the temptation to do the opposite (putting something on the ground without an appropriate bend of the lower extremities). Keeping your chest up while you bend the ankles knees and hips is not so easy it turns out; but a simple practice and promotion of fortifying principles will help immensely.

Using a ball we explore areas of our bodies that can use some TLC. I recommend finding a ball that works best for you. You may find that you prefer to have a few different balls of varying intensities/sizes. The goal is breathing as a means of release. Finding places of tension and breathing encouraging the whole body to release is the goal. It is tempting to find an intense spot and bear down on it all costs, but seldom does this approach afford efficient long term practices. I encourage you to be open to using softer balls with less density in order to encourage the entire body to release.

Yes, the title of this episode is a little "out there" and therefore potentially "off brand" but sometimes it is what it is... I encourage you to follow your natural breathing pattern. From a sitting posture, when you inhale, your torso expands and rises like a balloon, when you exhale you slowly deflate. Use that to help guide you through this episode.
We focus on continuing to move our bodies during the spaces where there is neither inhale nor exhale. This sense of expanse in a void is very luscious and feels amazing.

There is a natural pause between an inhale and an exhale as well as between and exhale and an inhale. For example: Inhale -pause- exhale -pause- inhale -pause- exhale -pause-... We will use this naturally occuring -pause- to expand our awareness and movement practice. We focus on breathing first -pause (no movement or breath) and then moving (or staying still) during the inhale -pausing (no movement or breath)- then exhaling first and then moving (or staying still) during the exhale -pause-.... You will find this is more physically and mentally challenging that is first seems.

Moving in conjunction with a breathing cycle is an effective means of creating awareness, strength, and mindfulness. Especially when the lower half (legs) have to move at a slightly slower tempo from the upper half (torso, arms, shoulders). The tendency will be to move the legs quickly to the end of the movement and then stay still before the upper half of the body has completed the journey. Focus on breathing and moving the entire body for the duration of the breath. If you are still breathing then your appendages should still be moving (unless the instructions tell you otherwise). Take your time, and enjoy the repetitive patterns that develop to more complex movements that challenge your balance, endurance, and stability.

Just keep moving. As long as you are standing and comfortable- just keep moving. The arms and legs may not be doing anything of what you are asking them, but just keep trying and moving. Coordination does not happen over night. It takes a great amount of practice- which means, you're going to feel like you're making mistakes. Don't worry about the 'errors': just keep moving and trying.

Knee's are a precious and precarious endeavor. A hinge joint with some rotational capacity that transfers forces upward and downwards with each and every stride. People often express an innate fear of either straightening or bending their knees too much. As if staying in the middle is the safest bet. Yet, over time, this lack of using the joint fully can severely limit it's range of motion and negatively impact daily functioning. With the body, what you don't use, you tend to lose. So if you never accessed the full capacity of knee mobility when you were younger, it becomes increasingly more difficult to stave off a stiffening of this joint over time.
We start standing with one foot on the floor the other knee on a bed. Using Yoga block behind the knee that is on the bed we try to bend the knee gently- without pain/strain. If that is not enough sensation for you, you can use increasingly smaller and more dense objects to help both support and stimulate your knee.

If you've ever watched a starfish or octopus move you will immediately get a visual representation for the reach and retract movements that we explore. By using the entire body as a unit you will hopefully appreciate how no one part of your body operates independently. Your arm does not originate from your shoulder. The arm is just a name we have juxtaposed as shorthand over a system of tissues that are inextricably connected throughout our entire being. The fibers of your arm extend down into your toes. Nothing is separate. We are a closed system and reaching and retracting from end to end, stem to stern will help efficiently energize and strengthen everything in between.

We strengthen One Lung at a Time. It is very possible to Breathe more into one lung than the other. Beyond that, with practice, it is highly possible to breathe more into one specific area of one lung. Strengthening the areas that have become weak and compromised will promote good organ and joint function over the long term.

We explore breath retention. If you've never practiced holding your breath after exhaling then you're in for a real treat! Typically most people inhale deeply then hold the inhale (when I was younger in a pool/lake/river- we often did this to swim under water). This practice is the inverse, we will be exhaling and then holding the breath out (without inhaling). This exercise can trigger a flight or fight response and that is very natural. Over time, with practice you can learn to acknowledge that response and then move through it to strengthen your breath pattern and nervous system.

Focusing on stimulating the hips and shoulders will automatically provide a deep well of support and stability. I recommend using between 1lb-3lb weights. One of the great thing about weights is that as long as you can A.) Grasp it B.) Lift it -then it is a great weight to use. You can utilize bottles of water, canned goods, rocks, branches or anything that you find laying around your environment.

The Pelvic floor is located between your Tail Bone, Sitz Bones, & Pubic Bone. It is essential that you are aware of being able to contract your pelvic floor without also contracting other areas (not tensing your jaw/tongue, not making fists, not squeezing your Backside or legs, etc...). We covered this emphasis in the prior episode called "Pelvic Floor Exercises". This practice may be performed while walking -but can just as successfully be practiced most anywhere that you can maintain safety and correct emphasis.

The web of soft tissues between your tail bone, pubic bone and sitz bones is an essential component of long term health. If you have any loss of control within this zone a host of symptoms may plague you. If you have difficulty comfortably laughing, jogging, or any localized pain, then a gentle regimen of pelvic floor exercise may help tremendously. You can practice anywhere at any time. We all have feelings. However, when we exercise we sometimes overlook or forget to keep an open dialogue with how we are feeling. It takes a lot of practice to become aware of not only our feelings, but then also what to do about them. Ignoring things that are uncomfortable or numb is the short term path of least resistance that can lead to long term road blocks in the future. In this episode I discuss why emotions are important and underscore the value of listening to how you feel and forging your own path.

This episode targets people who, when you are non-weight bearing, have difficulty straightening their knees and also need to sustain more of a small arch to their lower back. It may seem like a rudimentary non-issue, however, lack of pliability through soft tissues creates long term deleterious effects. If you are unable to control your own joints, who can? No one but you has the power to control your movements- especially something as simple as unbending a knee.

If you find that you prefer to slightly round your lower back in order to feel less pain, more strength, and greater ease then you may find this episode particularly enjoyable and beneficial. That is not to say that if you prefer to either not round &/or slightly arch your lower back that you should avoid it- just realize that the cues used regarding lower back placement may not be directed towards you specifically. That is the joy/challenge of group exercise: not everyone needs/benefits from the same thing. Learning about what works for you is a foundation to long term health and well being.

Using your breathe to measure out your movement is an incredibly meditative practice. In this episode I challenge you to keep moving for the full length of both the inhale and the exhale. Be aware that your legs will want to return to the starting position before the arms shoulders because they have a shorter distance to travel. So when you are inhaling and bending into your Squat be sure that you don't hold the motion and continue to inhale. If you are inhaling you are still moving into the depth of the squat. The same is true of the exhale. If you are still exhaling you should have not stopped moving. I repeat: Specifically the exhale you may find yourself returning to the start position prior to the completion of the full exhale. You may still be moving your arms/shoulders but your legs will have already returned to standing tall with no motion.

I have a client with a fused lower spine. This means that, in terms of exercise, we focus on keeping her spine as still as logical while moving her limbs. Because the spine is fused means that the immobile parts force the parts of her spine that are directly above and below the fused section to compensate/move much more than is desirable/safe over time. We found great success in focusing on helping her feel the front, back, middle, and sides of her torso contract in order to help keep her spine supported.

My long standing client of 13 years asked for a series of exercises that utilize upper body arm/shoulder strength/mobility. I'm sharing this series with you as it combines everything that we've worked on up through this episode. You will need an exercise band approx. 6 feet in length. I recommend utilizing the lighter range of bands.

The Shoulder joint lacks bony support. This lack of hard tissue means that mobilizing the joint through resisted movement will foster long term healthy arms and shoulders. You don't need to (and in fact from certain perspectives shouldn't) over tax your shoulder joint with either aggressive/extreme ranges of motion or weight loads. Also feeling how the arms and shoulders connect to your torso is an integral practice. When you move your arm, by necessity your are usually moving your shoulder blades and to a lesser extent your spine. Crazy! Just moving your arm, requires a lot of support and function from your whole torso because (...insert dramatic pause...) -they are all connected.
You will need an exercise band approx. 6 feet in length. I recommend utilizing the lighter range of bands as this is an exploratory episode. You will also need to identify two locations in which to secure the band safely. One location is standing (or sitting) the band should be attached approx. shoulder height from the floor up. The location is lower -about an arms distance from the floor. Make sure the attachment is secure and that the band is affixed/tied appropriately at all times.

Rounding your lower back is an essential part of most traditional movement practices. However, it is not necessarily suitable for all populations. If your Doctor has recommended that you not perform "Sit Up" type motions then please skip this episode.
This is an essential movement pattern for practicing a traditional "Sit Up" exercise. Please note that you heels must maintain constant contact with the floor. You can try moving your heels closer to you or further away to begin the exercise, but they are not allowed to lift away from the floor - at all. Not one little bit. ...If you think I am not speaking to you directly, you are mistaken...

Gaining awareness of where your waist is and isn't and how to move it can be extremely beneficial to our overall health. By mobilizing the area between the ribs and hips we are creating strength and flexibility in a zone of the body that is frequently troubling and often painful. By exploring a side lying position we allow gravity to help us discover where our waist is and how to better access movement in that part our bodies.

Long term health and well being is tied to your ability to discern:
A.) Where your Lower Back is (...and is not...) located
B.) How your Lower Back Area feels during various movements

One of my favorite exercises and perhaps least favorite name: The Squat. It is a fun and foundational movement that benefits form consistent practice and diligence. The more you practice, the more proficient you become and the more you can do across the board. Increasing your capacity to perform this exercise without pain will dramatically increase your ability to perform daily tasks with ease. It do take practice though. Please don't be fooled by how simple it may seem, the difficulty comes in being sure that all body parts are moving with simultaneous precision and harmony.

Balance is a foundation of physical health as it combines all of our faculties into a synchronous activity. While frequently overlooked, the ability to gain balance in our lives leads to long term health and well being. Not only by helping to not fall, but by also increasing self confidence and appropriate reactions across varying situations. While it many not look like much, exercise requiring balance are essential in recruiting a deep mind/body connection and fostering a sense of calm and stability. During the exercises you may feel that you are slightly shaking or unstable but -as long as you keep going- you will find that, with practice, the shaking lessens (though it never abates completely -balance does not mean stone statue- it means responding appropriately to a situation) and the ability to do more over time increases steadily.

By Moving in many different patterns as an exercise we gain tremendous torso strength and elan. This practice is an essential genesis for future core support and control.

Encouraging all listeners to successfully perform the exact same movements in the exact same way is not sound ethical programming. Our innate differences mean that we need movements that speaks to our specific individual needs. That is why it is essential to ask yourself “How do you feel?” and not “How do other people look?”.
In this episode I talk about possible difficulties that will arise with the previous episode. I’ll explain what to do when something does not feel good/stress free & how to continue to move so that you can stay centered and calm.

In this episode we take time to identify how laying on the front of your body should/could feel and discuss why this acknowledgement is important.
I get it: not needing any equipment or props in order to exercise is often thought to be the most essential/beginner level. Just you and the floor. It's very poetic. However the floor is a flat, unforgiving, and unyielding surface and we as people come in all different shapes, configurations, capacities, and abilities. Given that the floor is an unrelenting partner, should we expect ourselves to not use anything else but the ground? Is that a sound expectation? It is not about "warrior-ing up" or "just get used to it". In terms of health and well being finding an initial place of non-tension and ease is the most essential aspect of creating sustainable longevity. If you start in tension/stress it is difficult to move away from that mindset. If you don't identify what starting from a place of tension feels like compared to what is tension free it will be difficult to create a long term healthy movement practice.

When you breathe your body moves. Feeling this natural movement when you breathe can help you understand how to move more efficiently over time. When you inhale, among other things, your body naturally extends (arches) and when you exhale your body flexes (rounds). In this episode we break down arching and rounding and connect those movements to your breathe.

Using a small inflatable exercise ball (or rolled up towel, inflated balloon, anything soft/pliable...) we will explore the locus and meaning of efficient breathing. Focusing on where the ball/prop makes contact with the body creates awareness of how the lungs move while breathing. By feeling how the lungs/ribs move during respiration you can help encourage a more efficient and stress free breathing pattern.

Breathing while moving our torsos side to side is a powerful practice that can increase both lung capacity and deepen torso strength and control. Expanding awareness into breathing more to one side than the other can also increase lung capacity and dynamically fortify our mind and bodies. Side bending can also help to underscore how our hips directly connect up through the entire side of our toros: shoulders, neck, and head. Very powerful to feel that deep and constant connection/relationship.

Rotation/Twisting is a foundational movement of the torso. Many injuries could be avoided by efficiently incorporating rotation into our daily practices. While twisting to the right and breathing through the right side nostril we are able to focus on the right lung and vice versa. Encouraging the lungs to inflate during rotation serves to offer the deepest level of core support to this movement pattern. By using breath to encourage a natural and efficient twisting pattern we serve to simultaneously strengthen both our torso and lungs.
