Lentils can be one of the least competitive crops when it comes to weed control, but good planning can make all the difference.

In this episode of MSF Farm Talk podcast, we revisit the Mallee Research Updates from March, where agronomist and WeedSmart Extension Officer Chris Davey explores practical strategies for managing weeds in lentil crops.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series with Chris Davey on lentil weed management.

Chris explains why lentils are particularly vulnerable to weed pressure and how decisions made before sowing can set crops up for success. In this episode of the MSF Farm Talk podcast, we revisit Mallee Sustainable Farming's Variable Rate Technology Forum held in Lameroo in March, where Kylie catches up with Pete Treloar after a series of pre-seeding VRT workshops across the South Australian Mallee.

Pete shares what recent trial work is revealing about applying phosphorus and nitrogen more strategically using VRT. He explains why many paddocks in a low-yielding season showed little response to additional phosphorus, how test strips can help validate decisions, and why some high-performing soil zones continue to justify greater investment.

The conversation also explores how combining soil moisture, nitrogen testing, yield maps and local knowledge can help growers better target inputs, reduce unnecessary fertiliser costs and improve confidence in variable rate decisions across contrasting seasons.

In this episode of the MSF Farm Talk podcast, PIRSA’s Amanda Schapel shares insights from the long-running, collaborative, Soil CRC Sandy Soil Project. The project is investigating how clay and organic amendments can improve the productivity and resilience of sandy soils through literature reviews, pot trials and long-term multi-site field research.

Amanda explains why sandy soils can behave so differently depending on factors such as depth to clay, grain size and rainfall environment, while also outlining the multiple constraints often present in sandy systems, including compaction, acidity, water repellence, and poor nutrient and water-holding capacity.

Drawing on a review of 89 projects and 270 treatments, the episode explores how organic amendments can rapidly improve deep sandy soils, although benefits may decline after several years, while subsoil clay provides a slower but more persistent productivity response. Amanda also discusses the performance of novel amendments including bentonite, zeolite and compost products, highlighting the importance of matching amendments to specific soil constraints and balancing long-term benefits with cost-effectiveness.

Mallee Sustainable Farming Research Officer Louise Brok shares insights from the Millewa long-term crop rotation trial established in 2025 in the Victorian Mallee. The trial is evaluating pulse-inclusive farming systems, featuring 50% legumes across five fully phased rotations over four years. The project is investigating profitability, nitrogen fixation and fertiliser requirements, and groundcover retention. Designed for the low-organic-carbon sandy soils of the region, the work aims to test and validate farming systems that improve both productivity and resilience in high-risk environments.

Despite an extremely dry 2025 season — with crops dry sown on 5 May and receiving only around 90 mm of growing-season rainfall — the trials still delivered valuable early insights.

This episode explores the first-year results from the crop rotation and legume integration trial, along with additional demonstrations including wheat–vetch intercropping with varying vetch termination timings and a MAP fertiliser rate demonstration.

Tackling Mallee Seeps: Insights from the MSF Research Update

Managing Dry Saline Land: Insights from the MSF Research Updates

Veris Mapping Explained: Seeing Soil pH Differently - with Jordan Ball.

In this year's first episode of the MSF Farm Talk podcast, we are thrilled to announce the winner of the prestigious 2024 David Roget Award for Excellence. This award is an opportunity to celebrate the legacy and contribution of David Roget, a principal research scientist at the CSIRO, who revolutionized the field by taking research out of the lab and into the paddock.

There are many farms across the Mallee that have salt scalds form in their cropping paddocks, usually at the bottom of a sandhill. This forage shrub podcast looks into the way that Blue Wyatt has used his stand of saltbush to fix a salt scald area. If Blue's experience is anything to go by, the degraded land can be reclaimed quite simply with the shrubs and provide a useful source of sheep feed at the same time.

The project that brought you Mallee Sandy Soils Masterclass events in collab with the GRDC Sandy Soils project now brings you demonstrations investigating sandy soil constraint ID and paddock scale amelioration strategies.

In this episode we catch up with Michael Moodie to talk about a new tool he has been working on to get a better understanding of the nature of the sandy soils we are dealing with.

The Topsoil Mapper has been developed as part of the National Landcare Program Soil Extension funding round to demonstrate to growers the importance of understanding soil constraints prior to developing a soil amelioration plan.

Ian and Elizabeth McNabb have over thirty years’ experience with different types of forage
shrub, established by both direct seeding and planting tube-stock.

They’ve worked out which species survive best and regenerate, and currently have around 800 acres of mostly Old Man Saltbush on heavier, salt-affected land. This stand has helped reduce the spread of saline land on their property. It also provides valuable extra feed, allowing the McNabb’s to lamb their SAMM ewes down three times every two years. Grazing with cattle as well as sheep has prevented shrubs from getting too tall. Importantly, the extensive area of Saltbush meant the McNabbs could keep their stock through most of the drought of 2017-2020, improving the drought resilience of their business.

During the 1st week of farmFEST, MSF hosted three livestock nutrition workshops across the tri-state Mallee, at Balranald, NSW, Murrayville, VIC and Peake, SA. Joining project Manager Nick Paltridge and Extension Officer Kylie Matthewson were Emily King National Extension Manager for Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI), and Hamish Dickson, Ruminant Nutritionist from AgriPartner Consulting.

After the first two workshops, Hamish and Emily caught up with the MSF team at the Lameroo Hotel.

Hamish explains how he has been working in the Mallee over the past two years with this project to test different feeds, so that farmers can be better placed to understand the energy, protein, fire and mineral content of their feeds. How farmers supplement their feed base with grain, hay and straw was also addressed.

Emily gives us a quick background on AWI critical investment areas like Life Time Ewe Management, a joint venture with Meat and Livestock Australia on supplementation at weaning and what curly questions she has received on tour so far.

Ben Ranford farms with his family at Cleve on the Eyre Peninsula. The area has an average annual rainfall of 330mm, with 250mm on average falling in the growing season. Their soils include some white non-wetting sands over clay but are mainly sandy loam. They generally work on a cereal and legume rotation, mainly lentils on the flats and vetch or field peas on the sandy rises, with canola also used in more promising seasons.

Ben finds that their sands are low in nitrogen, so legumes are essential in supporting soil carbon and biological activity. He uses a legume dominant mixed species green manure over about 10% of the farm each year.

Managing subsoil constraints

Throughout 2017 to 2020 the area suffered from challenging dry periods and damaging winds during critical growing season windows. The Ranford's have no livestock in their system, although they have still suffered some erosion damage on their sandy rises. To overcome these issues and protect their white sands, Ben has been deep ripping and delving while growing and returning crop residues to the soil, in addition to the use of other soil health improvement strategies.

In this episode, Chris McDonough visits cousins Nigel Baird and Peter Baird in a paddock badly drifting in the 2018 and 2019 drought.

They're talking about the GRDC investment 'Practical tactics to improve ground cover and ensure soil preservation following successive low rainfall seasons.'

The Baird's is a remarkable story of recovery. Following an extended period of drought, which in itself is bad enough, thousands of kangaroos descended from station country to take away any remaining ground cover, and this caused devastating wind erosion.

Since then Nigel and Peter have been working really hard to get the paddock back to where it was before the drought. Their success now just goes to show what can be done with a bit of hard work and determination.

The second year of feed nutrition results are in and we catch up with Livestock Consultant Hamish Dickson, AgriPartner Consulting, to discuss the results of the AWI funded Feed Nutrition project.

A novel approach to weed management in Australia is being investigated with the start of a project that aims to research the management, economic and social benefits of tackling weeds on a broader scale.

The traditional approach to tackling weeds has been to focus on paddock or farm scale management. Instead, this project aims to take an area-wide approach to weed management with the theory being that if the number of weeds over the entire landscape can be reduced, everyone in that area should benefit, especially when dealing with weeds with mobile seed and pollen.

In the Sunraysia region, MSF is working with broadacre farmers, wine grape, dried fruit, citrus and almond growers to trial different weed management practices to control flaxleaf fleabane and especially where some industries share a boundary.

There are a number of potential weed issues related to fleabane’s ability to move across farm borders. This includes herbicide resistance spread, new weeds entering districts and spray drift.

In this podcast we talk to Dr Sonia Graham, Social Scientist from the University of Wollongong, who is researching farmer attitudes to weed management in an effort to understand the drivers of success for implementing an area wide approach.

In this episode we unpack compaction! If you're considering deep ripping paddocks this year do you know where to test or where to start and stop the ripping operations?

We've asked the experts, Research Scientists Therese McBeath and Rodrigo de Silva, the following questions: Where do we measure compaction in the paddock and what tools do we need? How deep do we need to rip to break up compaction? What is the difference between compacted, cemented and hard setting soil and what does this mean for ripping operations? Is Controlled Traffic Farming an alternative or complimentary option to deep ripping? Fertiliser is expensive, how much do we need to feed ripped areas this year?

To manage risk and seasonal variability there needs to be flexibility in grazing management and more information available to address nutritional deficiencies in low rainfall pastures and alternative grazing crops such as pulses.

The first year of results are in for the AWI Feed Nutrition project that aims to identify the nutritional value and mineral content of a range of Mallee pastures and grazing crops including the variance between seasons over two years and develop a dataset of the nutritional value and mineral content of low rainfall pastures for use by producers and industry.

Hamish Dickson from AgriPartner Consulting joins Tanja Morgan, MSF, to share the findings from sampling 11 pasture and crop types in different seasons to better understand the nutritional quality of paddock feed in low rainfall environments.

In this episode we talk to David Schubert, Ag Consultant with Dodgshun Medlin, who has been working on a novel pasture seeding demonstration, north of Lameroo on behalf of Mallee Sustainable Farming.

David talks about the key features and results of the demo that was first established in 2018 by sowing a hard seeded species sown with a crop with emergence expected in the following year. This was compared to sowing an annual medic variety in 2020. Regeneration of both treatments was also compared.

The Dryland Legume Pasture Systems (DLPS) project aims to boost profit and reduce risk in medium and low rainfall areas by developing recently discovered pasture legumes together with innovative management techniques that benefit animal and crop production and farm logistics.

This project is a five year Rural R&D for Profit funded project supported by GRDC, MLA and AWI; and involving Murdoch University, CSIRO, SARDI, DPIRD; Charles Sturt University and grower groups including MSF.

In the latest MSF Farm Talk Podcast we catch up with two Pinnaroo farmers, Wade Nickolls and Skeet Lawson as well as Research Agronomist, Michael Moodie.

Wade and Skeet were involved in the Pinnaroo Pulse Check Group which is part of the GRDC Southern Pulse Extension Project which started in 2017 and has just wrapped up now after 3 years. There were two groups in the Victorian Mallee and two groups in the South Australian Mallee. The Southern Pulse Extension Project is proudly funded by GRDC, executed by MSF and led by Birchip Cropping Group.

In the second half of this episode, we caught up with MSF’s Key Research Agronomist, Michael Moodie, Frontier Farming Systems. Michael has been carrying out lots of research work across the Mallee and facilitating the Millewa Pulse Check Groups.

The Pulse Check groups allowed growers to network and compare their experiences, challenges and findings in their local area plus share practical knowledge to bridge gaps where research in the low-rainfall zone is lacking when it comes to pulses. Attendees varied between experienced pulse growers and those new to growing pulses in the Mallee.

Our guest on this week's MSF Farm Talk Podcast episode is someone extra special to MSF. Meet Ian Hastings!

Ian Hastings is a fourth generation farmer operating 4,000ha in a family business around the Ouyen area (Victorian Mallee).

In this episode Ian tells us his MSF stories and also outlines some handy mice control tips for mallee farmers to keep in mind for this year.

Ian has been active in many agricultural organisations including being the past President of the Victorian Ground sprayers Association and was honoured with a life membership upon his retirement from the Presidents role.

MSF is also incredibly proud to have awarded Ian with Life Membership at our recent Mildura Mallee Research Update and AGM.

Ian contributes substantially to the local community holding positions such as President of the Local RSL sub-branch and Ouyen Farmers Festival Committee member.

He is a past President of the VFF Grains Group (2003-2007) and served on the VFF Board of Management from 2003-2007. From 2002-2009 Ian was a member of the Grains Council of Australia and served as Deputy Chair from 2005 -2009.

Ian was an inaugural Board Member of Mallee Sustainable Farming Inc in 1998 and remained a Victorian farmers’ representative until 2002. He re-joined the Board in 2008 becoming Vice Chair in 2009 and is a member of the Executive, Finance & Audit and RD&E committees.

Ian Hastings involvement with MSF began prior to the organisations inception when he attended pre-formation meetings. Ian's board service commenced in 1997/98 and continued through to 2002 when he resigned to enable full commitment to his new role as VFF President. In 2009 Ian was invited to rejoin the board and soon after he was appointed Chairman, a role that he continued on with until 2018.

Ian has been instrumental in many achievements for MSF. Recent examples that require acknowledgement include his commitment and passion for attracting research into the Mallee to deal with ‘Sandy Soils’ and ‘Mallee Seeps’ challenges. Ian's dedication to ensuring attention to the constraints of farming sandy soils resulted in funding for a large project that would not have been as significant without his leadership.

Ian Hastings is a fierce and passionate advocate for Mallee and Dryland Farming and we can't thank him enough for the value and contributions he has added to MSF over the years.

Congratulations Ian for your well deserved MSF Life Membership Award and thanks for joining us on the MSF Farm Talk Podcast!

Agriculture Victoria with support from the Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA), is monitoring wind erosion risk in the Victorian Mallee by assessing groundcover and land management throughout the year. This will help build a picture as to how the region is maintaining ground cover and reducing the effects of wind erosion.

Groundcover data is obtained through remote sensing (satellite imagery) technology and roadside surveys. This combines new technology and is reinforced by existing tried and true methods. Land Management Development Officer with Agriculture Victoria, Rachel Coombes, talks about the project and the results from the 2019 growing season in this podcast.

Bonnie Flohr from CSIRO joined us in this episode to chat about her work on a case study based in Lameroo on soil, water and temperature thresholds for early wheat establishment.

The aim of this project is to determine the soil water requirements, and soil temperature limitations to the successful establishment of deeply sown long coleoptile wheat cultivars at the earlier sowing dates in the South Australian mallee environment.

This SAGIT funded project is achieving this in three phases: Model simulation to determine anticipated soil temperature and water scenarios in the mallee environment. A controlled environment experiment with intact soil cores collected from the target environment, testing the impact of temperature and soil moisture regimes on plant establishment. A 3-month field experiment that evaluates the effect of soil moisture and ground cover on soil temperature at early sowing windows.

Welcome to the 'Target 50 - decision making to keep ground cover in the system' series with our focus today on managing eroded soils. This series is all about ground cover and talking through the practicalities of farming to keep the minimum recommended levels of 50% ground cover in the system. Keeping our farming systems protected from wind erosion and our soils healthy and sustainable is what we are aiming for!

Our guest in this episode has been involved with Mallee Sustainable Farming right back in the early days! He was one of our key researchers working on erosion prevention and helped guide farmers in ground cover management when shifting to no-till seeding systems.

Department of Planning, Industry and Environment NSW researcher, Dr John Leys joins us today to talk about re-establishing cover on eroded soils and some of the important rules of thumb we should consider in our more modern farming systems to prevent erosion issues into the future.

Dr Sean Mason from Agronomy Solutions joins Drew Radford to outline GRDC’s massive ‘Soil and plant testing for profitable fertiliser use’ project. Growers are concerned about where soil nutrients have ended up post wind erosion damage in the Mallee. In partnership with Frontier Farming Systems, soil testing was conducted in the Mallee with findings including low organic carbon levels in sands and reduced mineralisation.
