Uncanny Valley is a label from Dresden, Germany. sub-labels: @shtum-records & @credit00ratlife

Starting as a label that served basically as a platform for their friends’ music in 2010, Uncanny Valley evolved into a record label that assembles acclaimed artists from the electronic music scene not only from the label’s base in Dresden but also from Germany and beyond. With a strong emphasis on the records’ artwork the label heads Philipp Demankowski, Conrad Kaden, Carl-Johannes Schulze and Albrecht Wassersleben are constantly on a mission to establish and refine the artists from the roster as well as to search for new talents. Artists as Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Credit 00, Massimiliano Pagliara, CVBox or Panthera Krause all feel at home on the label, giving them the chance to develop projects that are not only music related but can also integrate different art forms. With the two offshoots Rat Life and shtum under its belt, Uncanny Valley does not stand still to explore the full spectrum of electronic and not so electronic music from House via Disco, Hip-Hop or Ambient through to Techno. A range that can also be depicted when the four label heads come together for a DJ set as Uncanny Valley Soundsystem.

As the year draws to a close, UV Radio host @philipp-demankowski returns to the show with a tradition that has become a quiet constant: the annual Ambient Special. Now in its eleventh edition, the show once again offers a gentle pause in an otherwise hectic year. Given the current state of the world, 90 minutes of drifting, unobtrusive sound may be just the kind of refuge many are looking for. Take a step back, settle into a calm space, and let the music do the rest. Wishing everyone a peaceful Ambient Christmas.📸 Danakil Depression (Ethopia)Ishome - mark ii driverCar Culture - NothingburgerJo Bogaert - Ambient KinskyTrance - AmbienteThe Starseeds - Behind the Sun (Deep Ambient Mix)The Arc - Orphic MysteriesWhatever the Weather - 20°CBarker - The Remembering SelfDjrum - Come Find Meex_libris featuring A Made Up Sound - #8 (Cascade) Mark Pritchard, Thom Yorke - Wandering GenieBurial - Imaginary Festivaltibslc - Washed AshoreMorten Søndergaard - Sahara I Mine HænderGlobal Communication - Incidental HarmonyNo‐Man - Days In The Trees (Reich)
Dancers have to train hard and perform with a rough edge, conveying emotions with as much acting ease as possible. At the end it also requires choreography, clothing, lighting and the appropriate set with lots of helping hands. The bigger the show, the more people are involved. With a few exceptions, it also needs sound, rhythm or just a appropriate soundscape. Sometimes existing music is used because it is structurally well suited to the piece. Other times, working with composers and musicians is the best way to put your own stamp on the piece bringing things to the point. @sandrow_m has been working with choreographers and dance piece makers for several years. With this compilation he presents 20 different pieces of music that were either used because of their suitability or were created. There is no attempt to present the entire spectrum, which would not be possible in 90 minutes anyway. Nevertheless the compilation contains various styles, for which, with a little patience, you can try to find corresponding film material on the Internet to complete your listening experience.1. Thomas Bangalter - CHIROPTERA Solo Intro (from JR, Damien Jalet, Thomas Bangalter - CHIROPTERA)2. Alisdair Macindoe - 4/4 (from Chunky Move – 4/4)3. Steve Reich – Violin Phase4. Fourteen years of Uncanny Valley - fourteen years of resisting the predictable, the neatly packaged crap that keeps electronic music stuck in a loop. Dresden's bastard child of a label has survived, thrived and kept its teeth by refusing to be just another name in the endless mess of club culture. And now Carl Suspect, co-label boss and sonic agitator, is opening up the archive and piecing together something raw, urgent and unfiltered. “14 Years of Uncanny Valley” is a journey through the dark corridors of house, jazz-funk, Italo, ambient and techno - an uncompromising, sweaty ride that feels less like a retrospective and more like a battle cry. And it's all on cassette, because fuck your algorithm-friendly playlists. This isn't nostalgia. This isn't a victory lap. It's proof that Uncanny Valley still doesn't play by the rules. Carl Suspect puts it on cassette - the rest is noise.TracklistMr. Incognito - Wheel of FortuneCuthead - Tranquility BaseCitizen Funk - Chicago PizzaMassimiliano Pagliara - Empty RoomCredit 00 - Breakers RevengeJacob Stoy - Gray Sun EnvironmentChinaski - LifetimeJacob Korn - Fun BlockCharlotte Bendiks - PascoPerel - Monteiro Da CostaChino - IPChino - Carabo CruisePagan Rites - Torpedo AheadCVBox - Past The EclipseLeibniz - FoolishCuthead - Party ChordsJacob Stoy - OverloadAvalon Emerson - Constantly My Cure (Vocal Mix)Inga Mauer - DystopiaSneaker - Haunted SambaKarima F - Flaccid HouseAlphonsine Koh - No Need For SpeedCuthead - The Poncho Intro

From Sweden with Italo to Dresden with love. Stockholm's @djdjcity drops his first release on Dresden's Uncanny Valley with the COSMICOMICS EP, a 100% fun record for all the senses, deeply inspired by Italo Calvino's iconic short story collection.COSMICOMICS borrows its name from a collection of short stories written by Italian author Italo Calvino, first published in Italian in 1965. The stories have inspired DJ City to a record that aesthetically draws from 80s Italo Disco and 70s science fiction films. In the book, each story is based on a scientific fact about the world and the cosmos whilst using fiction to ask how we understand it. Where Calvino's stories are comical and absurd, DJ City surrenders to the sublime and romantic and moves further into the metaphysical world that Calvino created to come up with three energetic and melodic tracks bursting heavily with fantasy and drama. Deeply rooted in dance music’s history, they shine with Hi-NRG-vibes, strict dancefloor commitment and little easter eggs like that Drexciya-reference in COSMICOMICS.The cover of the record is a painting from 2020 by Swedish artist Jens Fänge called THE INN. We see a man in front of the entrance to a Mediterranean-style building and a woman in a window on the upper floor. The picture seems to have been broken up into several dimensions, and abstract details make it difficult for the viewer to know exactly what and when the scene is taking place. When shown in Shanghai, the painting was censored by government agents and had to be taken down. A testament to the power of the image. Perhaps it shows our main character, perhaps it shows us the author or the artist. Depending on who listens, who reads and who looks, a multitude of universes open.01 Cosmicomics02 Pillars of Creation03 Moon MilkCreditsWritten and produced by Johan Norling. Here's the new radio show straight out of the studio from none other than @stachy, a true legend who has been living his daily life in Dresden for a few years now, but has a career that spans all sorts of roots in music, with a respectable background in hip-hop and a decent career in pop music under his belt. To this day, he just can't get enough of music, be it in an academic context, as a versatile electronic music producer, a passionate lover of ambient and vaporwave or as a fun DJ. For the show, he dives deep into his Polish roots with this special version of Baltic Balearica, which he calls Bigos a la Balearic. Have fun!

Not only is he one of the nicest people in Alt-Stralau, he also has the best taste in music beyond the blue lagoon. In addition to lawnmower symphonies and ambient cacophonies, Fabian has also acquired a veritable collection of Hawaiian music. Reason enough for Philipp to invite his good friend for the long awaited comeback of Uncanny Valley Radio to offer us a handpicked selection of traditional slack-key guitar ballads and ukulele serenades. As always at Christmas, Philipp gives you 90 minutes of contemplation with the annual Ambient Special. A lot has happened again this year in the land of wallpaper music, with Ambient taking another decisive step towards dominating pop music with new sounds and exciting artists. A development that will probably continue next year, apparently also because people are in good need of all forms of escape from reality right now. The new UV Radio show is packed with songs with kids on the mic. It's as simple as that. Good for when you need a shot of joie de vivre again. Philipp has put together songs from Francis The Great, the seven year old Afrobeat-wunderkid, via the Disco masterpiece “On a Day Like Today” from Auguste Darnell with those wonderful kid choruses to “Le Petit Chevalier”, the somehow tragic song sung by Nico's son Ari. The new UV Radio show uncovers once more the sound of a city that almost got lost under the many layers of street noise and residents' babble. After Philipp presented Dresden's unsung heroes in 2021, it's now done by none other than @rvds, who digs up electronic gems from his longtime hometown of Hamburg, including many of his friends or acquaintances. Of course Hamburg has a rich heritage of electronic music anyway. But in this show there is a lot to be discovered apart from the obvious names. Great tracks between experimental and house music, maybe the two constants in Hamburg's electronic music scene. On top, lots of Hamburg humor. Enjoy it.
As always in January, UV Radio host Philipp Demankowski looks back and asks DJ friends and producers from the Uncanny Valley family for their favourite track of the last year. All participants have recorded a short intro for this. It’s always a lot of fun listening to the contributions. So here is the selection, from hard hitting rave bangers to super sweet pop songs.

In these unstable times, @philipp-demankowski declares a chill command and presents the annual ambient mix just before the holidays. 2021 didn’t disappoint in this regard and brought us some really great wallpaper sounds. Although even a few beats have sneaked in this time, on the whole the mix is again a guide to getting down with ease. If you feel this, be sure to check out part one, two, three, four, five and six. And by the way, the picture is from the welcoming Chocolate Hills. So, Merry Ambient Christmas everyone!

This show is dedicated to the pioneering women of electronic music featured in the highly recommended documentary SISTERS WITH TRANSISTORS. The doc tells the stories of "women composers who embraced machines and their liberating technologies to completely change the way we produce and listen to music today." If you haven't had a chance yet, you should check out the film. Philipp not only screened it at this year's DAVE festival at the much-loved Thalia cinema, he also played a track by each of the film's protagonists on his radio show, and shared a few things about them in his rather scrappy English.

@phasepattern's contribution to our podcast series is called "London is a Country" and can be listened to as a bass heavy reflection on his 20 years long stay in the city which ended this year with his return to Germany. The title phrase is taken from a tune by Luke Vibert and refers to the city's broad variety of cultures that came with immigrants from all over the world. One fine example that left traces in the recording is the "Windrush Generation" (people that immigrated from the Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1973) as portrayed in the anthology film series Small Axe by Steve McQueen. This is for all lovers and rockers!

Even if the organizations behind it sometimes make professional football unbearable, the fun of the game is still there for @philipp-demankowski. Having already done a special for Uncanny Valley Radio on the occasion of the last World Cup, he invited UV Radio regular guests @conrad-kaden and Gunnar to record a new special for EURO 2020, which for well-known reasons took place in 2021. The rules: Everyone gets eight countries from the field of participants and has to pick a nice song from each country. The result is a fun show with 24 not so typical football anthems.

@philipp-demankowski: “It might be a bit exaggerated to state that Dresden was once called "Little Detroit from The East". But there is no question that deep and dirty electronic music has been produced and performed here in numerous dilapidated buildings since the fall of the Wall. Many exciting, often all-too-unknown artists have made sure of that, some of whom are still active today. Both the club culture infrastructure and today's generation of artists in Dresden benefit from this. So it's time for a little special to pay tribute to these unsung heroes. Anyhow, I picked a few of my faves from that place that is our hometown for the new show. Sorry for missing out some of you great artists. There will be a part 2, I’m sure.”

You don’t have to know what Nintendonitis is to enjoy the music that soundtracks the latest indie video games. There is a lot of creativity going on in these circles, where music and programming often happen hand in hand. Hell, the games are sometimes even created by the same person that is responsible for the music. For this show, @philipp-demankowski has collected his favourite soundtracks of indie games, which are actually all worth trying out. So, don't expect great epic AAA orchestral music, but rather synth heavy neon tunes, percussive Vaporwave excursions and gloomy Ambient elegies.

Baltic Power for the new UV Funk show. Being one of the most dedicated music lovers in Dresden @lksczk from the @zeptermusik Crew delights us with an acoustic tour through Latvia. Be prepared for new favorites like NSRD, an avantgarde New Wave outfit that was formed in 1982. The group’s activities included not only music but also performances video installations, photography and video art. Or the fellow band Gadi Pirms Sākuma, that created a very unique version of Coldwave and Neue Musik. Both Bands were part of Riga’s DIY scene of the 1980s and 1990s, often borrowing gear from colleagues for their recordings. There’s a lot to discover here. For advanced listening hop over to Zepter’s Youtube channel where some of the records are uploaded.

When you live in Dresden, you somehow have a close relationship with the Czech Republic. The border is close and each of us has often been to Bohemian Switzerland to hike or to celebrate in Prague. Unfortunately, lesser known are the musicians from the former Czechoslovakia, who made the time of the Cold War a little more pleasant. Philipp has therefore commissioned an absolute expert on the music from both the Czech Republic and Slovakia to create a mix for us and to answer some questions about the respective music scenes. So here's @jakubsenkyrik from Brno's finest @primamusica and his take on the music from Czechoslovakia. Read the interview: https://bit.ly/uv_funk_czechoslovakia

Not only since Vaporwave or the revived interest in Japanese Ambient and New Age experiments people know about the greatness of some anime soundtracks apart from the usual heavy metal and happy pop intros. Masterpieces like Akira or the Ghost in The Shell are beyond all doubt milestones in both film and pop music history. In addition, composers such as Joe Hisashi have made a significant contribution with their so-called image albums to emphasizing the atmosphere and character personalities in the films.
UV Funk host @philipp-demankowski has picked out some anime soundtrack treasures and a few additional tunes that are at least inspired by those films and put together a mix for the show.

This UV Funk radio show is dedicated to the long forgotten but recently rediscovered sound of the French West Indies that has been written down in Pop history by the name of Zouk. It was artists like the scene’s stars Kassav' and Francky Vincent from Guadeloupe or little known Claude Robap from Martinique that formed a music that is heavily influenced by disco, calypso, funk, latin music, afro or highlife. It’s a super positive music that made public and party life better not only on the islands but also via immigrants in France. Thanks to the Parisian label Heavenly Sweetness with their “Digital Zandoli”-compilations and some fresh reissues chances are high that you can listen to Zouk-tracks on open minded dancefloors today.
Here’s UV Funk host @philipp-demankowski delivering a mix with his favorite Zouk tunes. Enjoy!

May we introduce: @funkfrnk is one of Dresden’s most meticulous music lovers. He's the kind of guy who can be super angry when realizing that one of his records lands up in the wrong record sleeve. Apart from that he's the nicest guy to have a conversation with. And since he has so much knowledge about the most obscure white labels out there, it is also a lot of fun to listen to music with him. That's why Philipp couldn't be more happy when Franc approached him to do an UV Funk special about those unsung heroes from Manchester, Bristol or London, whose music would later be summarized as UK Street Soul. It's music from the late 1980s to the late 1990s, made with cheap drum machines and sweet voices, and also with heavy influences from Reggae, Soul, Funk and even Electro. So, please enjoy Franc playing his Street Soul records.

After both experienced a moment of catharsis when the other one played Joubert Singers’ "Stand On The Word", it was clear that Max aka Sir Vivor and Philipp wanted to do a gospel show together. As @philipp-demankowski told his good friend @cover-1 about his plan to screen the Library Music Film in the fine local boutique cinema Thalia, the Dresden DJ-force wasn’t only interested in watching the movie but also in contributing a mix to the project. That was very fitting as the digger with a never-ending passion for discovering new music has just lately dived deep into the inexhaustible vastness of library music. Therefore, it was a great opportunity to compile some of his latest findings and favorite records from the genre. The result is a trip into the wonderful world of library music under the name of “Bibliothèque électronique”.

Here are two hours of Austropop in all facets from the record collection of @Stirnband. In his own words: "Vinyl only with one exception: The second track in the intro is the title track of the 1982 debut film Niki Lists "Malaria" aka "Café Malaria", which I happen to see at the beginning of the 90s in Karlsruhe's Schauburg in the presence of the director. Colourful cocktails of various subcultures of the New Wave time get their Schmäh here and arouse my interest for the first time in the peculiarity of the Austrian New Wave in film and music (but it takes until the re-release in 2007 on DVD until I will see the film again). It's also this Schmäh that holds together the eclectic genre term "Austropop" consisting of New Wave, Space Rock, Liedermacher, Poprap, Wiener Blutrausch, Discofunk, Parody and Grotesque.

After reading Simon Reynolds' post punk bible "Rip it Up and Start Again" @philipp-demankowski wanted to stay a little longer in the field between Wave, Early Electronics, Dub and Avantgarde. Great idea for a new UV radio broadcast. In order not to play the eternal classics again, he looked around for unknown bands, that do not come from UK, USA or Germany. As always for the last UV Funk show of the year @philipp-demankowski compiles some of his favorite Ambient records of the respective year. And in 2018 a lot of good stuff came out. New but also some Reissues. Perfect for your own personal Christmas meditation. As always with good Ambient, you can listen to the music while doing something different. But the true benefit comes only with concentrated listening. If you like, this check out part one, two and three. And have a merry Christmas everybody!

Tilman from the Dresden based DJ duo Patlıcan takes us on a musical journey to Turkey. After spending a lot of time in various Turkish cities at flea markets and small shops, his collection of Anatolian music is growing steadily. At UV Funk he presents a small selection. of arabesque folk music pumped up with funk, psych, jew's harp and all kinds of fuzz. Wonderful music. Pretty great guy.

Everybody hates FIFA. Understandable. However, football in its essence, is a game that has always been able to bring people and cultures together. Even within a team. Then, football is fun. This was partially just the case at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. And since unfortunately music-wise there is only rubbish in the tournament, @philipp-demankowski thought to contribute the soundtrack himself. The rules are: For each tournament participant there is one favorite song by an artist from the respective country. So no Italo Disco, no Dutch Techno or Highlife from Ghana. But almost everything else. Although it's not so easy to find out which song is from which country. Have fun!

It's anniversary time, and there's something special for it: Dr. Nepp from Leipzig is a good friend of Philipp's, who has an amazing music collection from all over the world. For the 50th UV Funk show, he has rummaged through his boxes of disco-like music from India and Pakistan, and put together a wonderful mix that gives us an impression of how Indian and Pakistani musicians have created an opulent oeuvre with only a few elements such as a drum machine and individual strings. Under a mountain of hard to reach stuff, he has fished out some pearls that everyone should have heard.

Nobody will doubt that New York and London are two of the most prolific examples when it comes to the impact that urban cultures have on Pop music’s history. Whether it’s Hip Hop, Disco or No Wave on one side of the ocean or Dub/Reggae, Punkrock or Calypso on the other side, people from various cultural backgrounds helped to shape the profile of the cities. For the latest UV Funk show @philipp-demankowski wrote a musical love letter to the sound of now and yesterday in both cities.

UV Podcast 050 by @Basco
Welcome to the 50th episode of our podcast series. We celebrate this anniversary with a contribution by Basco aka Sascha Uhlig. Sascha is journalist, radio host, record collector, deck shark, video-game-music-expert, skater and simply a very music dedicated person. He was one of the first people outside of Dresden giving us some recognition and supporting our cause when he wrote articles, interviews or hosted radio shows and podcasts with our crew. Thank you for being a good company in the last 7 years :-)
Check out his music blog: http://www.drift-ashore.de
When the sun comes up over Dresden, one man is already on his bike riding to one to three flea markets to check out if there are some precious little vinyl diamonds. This man could be @cover-1, one of the most diligent diggers and DJs in the city. Over the years he made a name for himself for playing soulful Disco und House music that you should know but won’t even heard of before. When he is on holidays he tends to go to countries in which those unsung musical heroes were or are located. For instance, the islands of the West Indies to whose varied Soca, Disco and Funk scene he established a longtime love affair. At least, you can hear that in every note in his mix for UV Funk. Thanks, Cover!

Okay, this UV Funk show is totally not-to-be-missed material. It is dedicated to the hidden treasures from former Yugoslavia. Due to the Western-centric coverage of pop music’s history it is easy to miss some of this awesome music that ranges from obscure Boogie records to cosmic synth epics. To unearth these beauties via their @discom-1 label is the purpose of Belgrade-based music aficionados Luka Novakovic and Vanja Todorovic. After putting out the re-release of Boban Petrovic “Zora”-LP under the now-defunkt Disco not Disco imprint, Luka and Vanja started Discom. So far, they’ve released four LPs, among them an excellent compilation called “Yugoslavian Space Program” that brought together synth and Kraut masterpieces from a time period spanning the years between 1981 and 2015. Only recently they released the album “Sidarta” from the experimental/ jazz fusion collective 37°C.
But if you listen to this mix they’ve put together for UV Funk it seems as if these releases were just the tip of the iceberg. Happy digging!

Manche behaupten @hw-rhapsody erfinden sich regelmäßig neu, andere mögen an ihnen, dass sie sich immer treu geblieben sind. Hä? Was denn jetzt?
For sure, Vaporwave isn’t the new shit. Luckily, it proves substance. It’s certainly not dead, as some people seem to suggest. Instead, the art form has resulted in the emergence of a wide range of different styles, both musically and aesthetically. It almost seems that the thing that is Vaporwave enters a golden era with countless possibilities. In Dresden, there is one man who tries to follow these developments. Scherbe even started a side project called P U D E R P O L L I with his very own contributions to the ever growing Vaporwave community. No doubt that he would be the best choice to explain the phenomena at Philipp’s UV Funk radio show.

Synths have been the instruments of choice for decades when it comes to soundtracking horror movies. From the heydays in the Seventies with legends like John Carpenter and Goblin to modern approaches that reflects the early days those two pop culture icons make a perfect liaison dangereuse. Whether you like those sharp and abrasive electronic sounds or the haunting synth pads: you can’t doubt that synths create the best atmosphere to have a decent fear attack.
So here’s a selection that @philipp-demankowski mixed together with some of his favourite horror movie scores. This UV Funk show ties in with the first Soundtrack special that was focused on Exploitation movies.

Just like Exploitation movies could be a possibility for filmmakers to realize their dirty and in many cases cheaper visions – at least compared to Hollywood’s standards – the soundtracks to those films could also be a playground for musicians to try out different techniques and sounds. For the latest UV Funk show @philipp-demankowski put a mix together with his favorite soundtrack tunes to praise those often forgotten tunes. From the legendary Funk soundtracks of the Blaxploitation movies to the raunchy rhythms of early sex comedies. There are some big names like Morricone and Schifrin but also a lot of composers who aren’t on your check list. The selected movies aren’t Exploitation movies at all costs but there is a similar vibe to the music. And if you’re more into those synth heavy Horror soundtracks check out the second part of UV Funk’s Soundtrack Special which will be uploaded soon.
There are two versions of the show. You can just listen to the music here at Soundcloud. Or you can listen to the complete radio show at Mixcloud with Philipp talking about the music and the associated movies in German: https://www.mixcloud.com/uncannyvalleydd/uv-funk-soundtrack-special-part-1-exploitation-movies/

When you’ve been a musician in East Germany there wasn’t much of a choice regarding which label you can release your music on. Six sub labels were gathered under the roof of the VEB Deutsche Schallplatten, the monopolistic music publisher in the German Democratic Republic. All music considered as Pop music was released on Amiga. The catalogue consists of 2,200 albums and about 5,000 singles, with a total of 30,000 titles. The records were mostly GDR-based artists but also some licenced compilations with artists from the western hemisphere, as long as they were clearly compatible with socialist values. If you dig a little deeper you’ll find a lot of little treasures in the Amiga catalogue. @philipp-demankowski compiled some of his favourite lesser and better known examples of Funk, Soul, Disco, GDR-Kraut and Synth-Pop for the latest UV Funk radio show. Happy diggin!

While on a constant search for new audiences @sandrow_m and @conrad-kaden went to Bad Schandau, a spa near Dresden and close to the Czech border. Haha. They were invited by @stachy who is hosting the Liquid Sound Club in a swimming bath over there. The concept provides an under- and above water light and sound experience while the bather floats in salt water. It is a pretty unique concept that Conrad, Sandrow and [micro:form] set the music for in their bathrobes. Even if not all of the present golden agers were happy with the Ambient and Chillout sounds from Conrad’s records, Sandrow’s synths and [micro:form]'s effect machines. So without further ado here’s the recording of their set from 5/12/2015.

One more year, lots of new favourites. Once again UV Funk host Philipp asked a lot of Dresden-based and mostly UV-related DJs and artists to comment on their biggest tune of the year. As in recent years the show gathers a fine collection of songs from Afro via House through to Vaporwave and Folk music. This year it seems as some guys are pretty much into adding affects. And two of them picked the same song.

If you walk through the now brightly polished streets of Dresden you can’t imagine that the city was once called „The Little Detroit Of The East“. After the wall came down it was a place crowded with industrial ruins and dirty occupied buildings. A place even Mad Mike thought of as “not particularly happy”. In other words: an ideal playground for Techno. It must have been in one of those short lived clubs with names like Base or Fabrik when Stephan Schindler aka Kryptic Universe aka Lockertmatik has been infected with the Techno virus for the first time. At least, these times immediately come to mind when you’re listening to his tracks on Wolfskuil, Psycho Thrill, Melted Recordings, Phonocake, our beloved shtum or his Lockertmatik label. Detroit is a key reference for him ever since. Just listen to the mix he contributed live at coloRadio for UV Funk. Also, be sure not to miss the interview with Kryptic Universe and Co-label head Jens Müller aka Q about the Lockertmatik-label at the end of the show.

Dresden is a city of Dance culture. Not only did the famous German dancer and dance teacher Gret Palucca work here and still leaves traces in the form of the prestigious dance school named after her. The city’s theatre Festspielhaus Hellerau which was conceived by Swiss music teacher Émile Jaques-Dalcroze in 1911 has also a long history in providing a domicile for ambitious contemporary Dance projects. One of such is the Go Plastic compagnie which is led by local dancers Cindy Hammer and Susan Schubert. On the occasion of the premiere of their latest production “Go West, Young Men” on 11 December 11, 2015 Philipp invited them to the studio. Accompanied by the two dancers Christian Novopavlovski and Jared Marks the two dramaturgs talked about the new piece and the dance scene in Dresden in general.

As many have noticed Uncanny Valley celebrated its 5th birthday this past summer. On this occasion Philipp invited lots of UV artist into the coloRadio studio and asked them if they would play their favourite Uncanny Valley tune and talk a bit about it (Jacob Korn, Scherbe, Sneaker, Carl Suspect, Albrecht Wassersleben, Conrad Kaden, Sandrow M, Cuthead and special guest Max). The result is a pretty decent mix and (if you speak German) also fun and interesting to listen to.

Long awaited and right in time for summer: Sandrow M follows up his much loved “Prayervan EP” from 2013. Being one of Uncanny Valley’s mainstays since the very start, the Dresden based artist once again proves his versatility as well as his knack for synth based melodies with his new EP “Kuiper Belt Rose”.
Sandrow M seems to love singing along with catchy tunes as much as dancing in the club. It’s in every note, whether it’s the dreamy title track, the elegant “Dream Controlling” or “Next Stop Hessdalen” which is a veritable dance floor bomb thanks to the rising synths. The record ends with the beautiful “Miss You Again” which was actually written for a modern dance piece.
The artwork was created by Lydia Mojzis.

Success is dangerous. If your band hits the jackpot with numerous platinum records it’s likely that your future songs lack creativity and courage. But there are exceptions. For the latest UV Funk show host Philipp mixed cool music by popular bands that know how to sell records: B-Sides, Outtakes, lesser known singles or just your favourite track on an otherwise crap album.

If you wanna know how important the one and only Altes Wettbüro has been for Dresden’s club culture you only have to get a glimpse of the list that Micha Schuhman brought for the UV Funk radio show celebrating the tenth anniversary of Altes Wettbüro. It’s a densely-written document you’ll find names of artists from all kinds of genres on it. In the last ten years the full-time booker Micha Schuhmann had a large share of making the club to what it is today. Starting as a bar on the border of Dresden’s nightclub district Neustadt it soon became also a small-sized club with a loyal crowd and a family-like crew. Almost any Uncanny Valley artist has hosted club nights or played here. But AWB, Wetti, Wetterbüro or whatever you wanna call it isn’t only a venue for parties but also for concerts, discussion forums or workshops. Recently the house has also distinguished itself with an excellent and seasonal cuisine. And let’s not forget the Mediterranean, Ping Pong approved garden plus an additional small clubhouse you can also rent for birthday parties or the likes. One of the best places to stay in Dresden’s summer!
There is a lot of speculation about what will happen to the club in the next months. We’ll see where this path will lead. But for now, Micha Schuhmann and UV Funk host Philipp looked back on ten years of excitement and inspiration happening at a place called Altes Wettbüro.

As you might have noticed our home town Dresden isn’t easy to call an open-minded city these days. There are pretty obvious xenophobic tendencies thanks to the painful Pegida marches which have been taking place in Dresden since October 2014. Among the many initiatives that oppose these developments there is the collective Tolerave. It’s a group of creative artists, event managers and friends of electronic dance music that wants to keep the city of Dresden as a colourful and multicultural place by bringing people together. What better way to do that than to throw a big party to which refugees and immigrants are explicitly invited?
In preparation for a big event taking place at Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden UV Funk host Philipp Demankowski invited Israeli-born Ehud Roffe aka E-Hut and Schadi aka Einfach So who was raised in Syria to the show. Both are hyperactive jack-of-all-trades in Dresdens music community which would be much poorer without them. At the show E-Hut is hammering savage beats in his Electribe based live set while Einfach So delivers a fine old school mix which spotlights his Hip-Hop roots as well as his DJ skills. Be sure to catch him at his Sabotage residency. But for now, enjoy the show!

follow Albrecht @a-w-1
This time Albrecht takes us on a journey from West to East Africa and back in the times between 1927 and 2013. Starting with early recordings from 1927 made in London of West African musicians we explore traditional folk music. Going further with recordings from Kenya & Uganda we can hear the developing of recording qualities in the 30's and 40's. With the spreading of radio broadcasting and cultural influences from more and more foreign countries we are experiencing the Latinization of West Africa. Stepping into the 60's and 70's Rock'n'Roll and Funk is taking over the hearts of musicians from The Congo. Getting a sense where the music is developing till the early 80's we're doing a jump to the present. Here we can hear electronic influences and a more modern approach. The last three tracks are recordings made in 2011 in a small village in West Africa while the very last track shows Sven Kacirek combining them with contemporary music production. (For more 80's and 90's African Music check our other Afro Funk Special).

Summer ist over, winter is coming. Actually Philipp mixed the last UV Funk show as a teaser for our sunny Balearic party in Dresden. But now it turns out that the mix works perfectly as a soundtrack for the transition from the hot season into the cold one. It starts off with summery Afro and Funk vibes but ends in a rather dark atmosphere.

So, relax, grab a drink and listen to some fine tunes of Soft Rock, Yacht Rock, AOR, Blue Eyed Soul, Daddy's music or whatever you wanna call it.

When Max Graef and Nano Nansen played our Uncanny Valley Party last May we did a little pre-party with Max and Nano mixing it up at our beloved Fat Fenders. We streamed live from the record store to the radio station. Also, Philipp took the opportunity to ask some questions. This came about thanks to Dresden's East Lodge-crew whose DJs Nixon & Stogram contributed a little warm up set.

Fortunately it isn’t so difficult these days to explore some rare music from Africa. Just have a look at those fine reissues and compilations which showcase a wide range of that particular funky music that only can originate from the black continent. Just check out our Reissue Label Special from 2011 to get the idea. For this edition of UV Funk it’s Gunnars turn to pick out some beautiful tracks and talk a bit about the artists. He focussed on Afrobeat, Afrofunk and Afrodisco from Nigeria’s 70s.

When Philipp played on the infamous Tempo 80 party in Dresden earlier this year he selected way too many records to play only for one night. It would have been a pity to just put them back into the shelf niches. So he decided to mix some of them up for the next UV Funk show. So here it is: this is a mix full of cocaine flavoured tunes, special freak and disco versions, nuclear paranoia, hooligan shouts and rattling snares. No, Cold, Minimal, Synth Wave and everything inbetween. You name it!

It's no secret that we love vinyl here at Uncanny Valley. So we didn't have to think long when Alex Ketzer asked the label to take part in his Beyond Plastic project, a mixtape in book format about artists and vinyl labels that press music on “black gold”. And there will be a CD with music from these labels that will be included with the book. Alex spent more than one year on the road to visit his favourite labels and “vinyl instititutions” in their everyday surroundings. Besides Uncanny valley the book includes interviews and articles of 60Hertz, Smallville, Liebe*Detail, Pingipung, Acker Records, Decks.de, De:Bug, Giegling, Brothers in Love, Dubplates & Mastering, Aim Vinyl, Fauxpas Musik, Oye Records, Ortloff, Kann, Rand Muzik, Freude am Tanzen and Workshop. Of course there is a 12-Inch compilation that will be released in addition to the book project. Among the artists is our very own Sandrow M. Check the project's site and the facebook-page to get updates.
You can order the book and give a listen to the CD over here: http://www.bpl.io/ We kindly recommend to do that .
For UV Funk Philipp and Gunnar talked about the project to Alex via telephone. On top he contributed a great mix for the show. He included only tracks that are typical examples for the particular label’s sound.

One more year, lots of new favourites. Once again Philipp asked a lot of Dresden-based and mostly UV-related DJs and artists to comment on their biggest tune of the year. As in recent years the show gathers a fine collection of songs from Synth Wave via House through to Ambient.

Music from New Zealand sounds like Dub and Reggae? Well, that’s not totally wrong. At least there are a lot of bands on the Kiwi Islands dropping laid back vibes und doing it the smooth way. But there was also a huge Indie and Rock scene with bands like Split Enz, The Chills and the outshining label Flying Nun Records. Not to mention the exciting Fusion scene and those Psychedelic bands from The Sixties. You see, there is a lot to discover. So have fun with Edition Nr. 17 which shows an impression of how NZ can sound: Listen to Lord Echo, Fat Freddys Drop and the Black seeds, just to name a few . And Welcome Gunnar! He is UV Funk’s first time co-host, that will join Philipp also in future editions from time time.

There is so much good music in Leipzig nowadays. Two of those interesting label projects are Lunatic and Blackred, both researching the fields in between Science Fiction and Bass. Lunatic strikes attention more on the Techno side of things while the records on Blackred are just right for lovers of dark Electro. But in the end you’ll get proper electronic music you can dance to on both labels. Our good friends Credit 00 and CVBox also contributed to the label’s catalogue.
So it was a great opportunity to get two of the many heads behind the labels into the studio when they’ve been in Dresden lately. The Big Men Restless aka Rekorder and Alex Usunov and they provided us with a great mix through their sonic world. Plus, they talked a bit about Lunatic and Blackred.

No doubt – there has been a strong connection between movies and the world of electronic or rhythm based music. Just think of John Carpenter or the Goblin‘s work Dario Argento. Not to mention those musicians who tend to write music for movies just for the fun of it. Fot the UV Funk show in June Philipp picked some movie related songs out of his collection and made a mix out of it.

For those of you who don’t know: Conny Plank was a German record producer, musician, audio engineerer and secret member of many of those so-called Krautrock Bands until he died way too early in 1987. One of his early friends and collaborators was Hans-Joachim Roedelius, long-time member of Cluster and Harmonia and now – even at the age of 78 – hyperactive with both his solo work and in various collabos like Qluster or his recent project with Lloyd Cole. When Roedelius was in Dresden to play his live set at a special Conny Plank tribute night at Altes Wettbuero, Philipp had the opportunity to talk to him about his relationship to Conny and his work in general.
Before that, the Leipzig based DJ and promoter esclé (who was hosting the Conny Plank tribute show with some friends) played a great DJ set with Conny Plank related songs. In fact, every record he played is from Conny Plank’s very own record collection. His son was so kind to lend esclé the records for the whole tribute tour. Last but not least you can listen to a track from Credit 00 that he produced for his special Conny Plank live set. Credit could get his hands on a large collection of sample material out of Conny’s studio for those tracks. And boy, this live set was hot! But for now, enjoy the radio show!
