Minnesota-based 3M has agreed to pay more than $10 billion to resolve lawsuits over contaminated drinking water by PFAS — so-called “forever chemicals.”

The Minneapolis police officers who shot and killed 20-year-old Andrew Tekle Sundberg after a standoff yesterday morning were snipers positioned on a building across the street. That's according to search warrants filed in Hennepin County court. The warrants also say investigators at the scene found evidence that bullets were fired through the walls of Sundberg's apartment out into the hallway and into an apartment across the hall. However, they do not say why the officers chose to fire at Sundberg following the standoff.

A Ramsey County judge on Monday ruled that many of the state’s existing restrictions on abortion violate Minnesota’s constitution. Judge Thomas Gilligan ordered state officials to stop enforcing the restrictions including the two-parent notification law for minors, a 24-hour waiting period, a requirement that only physicians perform abortions, as well as a requirement that abortions after the first trimester be performed in a hospital.

Earlier this week, the Minneapolis school board approved long time Minneapolis school district administrator, Rochelle Cox, as the interim district superintendent. Cox will replace Ed Graff who is leaving in June.
Graff is not the only leader of a Minnesota school district who has resigned recently—a record number of school board members have also resigned across the state, citing chaos, bullying, and abuse in their districts. Health officials in Minnesota are asking parents to keep an eye out for signs of hepatitis in their kids as the number of children who have experienced the severe liver disease increases across the country. Three Minnesota children under the age of three have recently contracted hepatitis.
One child required a liver transplant, and all three have since recovered. Dr. Sara Hassan is a pediatric transplant hepatologist and gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic. She joined host Cathy Wurzer to talk more about the increase in hepatitis cases and what parents can do to keep their children safe.
Testimony got underway Monday in the trial of a man charged with lying to a federal grand jury about absentee ballot fraud. Muse Mohamud Mohamed is charged with two counts of making false statements to a grand jury during an investigation that followed the August 2020 primary for a Minnesota Senate seat. In filings, prosecutors allege that Muse Mohamed sent three absentee ballots to the Minneapolis elections office on behalf of three voters using a process called “agent delivery.”

This is Andy Luger's first full week on the job as US Attorney for Minnesota, but it's a position he's familiar with. This is the second time Lugar has been the top-ranking federal law enforcement official for Minnesota. He served under former President Barack Obama.
A US Attorney, Lugar is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes in the district. He oversaw a number of high profile and controversial cases in his first tenure. His work led to the conviction of nine young East African men for attempting to join ISIS. He made the decision to not to file charges against the Minneapolis police officers who killed Jamar Clark. School board chairwoman Kim Ellison has said negotiations have made progress, but there’s no deal yet. The pressure is mounting, and one school board member, Josh Pauley, resigned Tuesday citing broken trust between the board and the teacher’s union.
Some parents aren’t happy about the disruption to their children’s education. John Champe has two daughters in middle school in the Minneapolis district. He joined host Cathy Wurzer to talk about what the strike has been like for his family.

There's a lot of news on policing and public safety in Minneapolis this week. On Thursday the Minneapolis City Council met in a closed-door session to talk about policing in the city. One item on the agenda was the city's tentative contract with Minneapolis police. Under the new contract police officers would receive up to $7,000 in bonuses and pay raises in an effort to increase numbers of police in the department. The contract has support from Mayor Jacob Frey but requires City Council approval. City Council member Jeremiah Ellison is chair of the Policy and Government Oversight Committee and this week he decided to delay the committee’s vote on approving the contract for 2 more weeks. Governor Tim Walz took formal action today on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He signed an executive order that condemns the invasion and offers support to the people of Ukraine. Minnesota lawmakers found themselves swimming in surplus money Monday, as finance officials cautioned that events in Ukraine add uncertainty to a new forecast.
“If you look at the oil prices anticipated in this forecast, they’ll become higher. If you look at markets and financial markets, they’re going to be unsettled,” said state Management and Budget Commissioner Jim Schowalter, noting that the national economic model contained in the forecast was completed before Russia invaded Ukraine.

A couple of bills that aim to increase parents' control over their children's public school education await votes in the Minnesota Senate.
One would allow parental review of all instructional materials. The other would require access to class syllabi for parents within the first two weeks of the start of classes.
The bills are among the measures Senate Republicans have introduced during the legislative session as a part of what they call the "Parents' Bill of Rights."

In April, jurors in state court convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. A judge later sentenced him to 22 1/2 years.
In May, federal prosecutors charged Chauvin with using excessive force by pressing his knee into Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes. Chauvin originally pleaded not guilty, but a change of plea hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
