In this special edit of a recent interview with Ana Rita Guerra, I discuss the potential arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI) within five to seven years, while highlighting the benefits of intelligent assistance for practical tasks such as emissions control, protein folding, and translation, which can significantly boost efficiency and economic impact. However, I express concern about the societal and policy challenges posed by AGI, including over-dependence, disinformation, and job displacement. Drawing comparisons to the development of nuclear technology, I advocate for an AGI non-proliferation agreement and regulation to ensure responsible use of AGI. In the film, Gerd sets forth that we should embrace Artificial Intelligence and harness its positive potentials while at the same time we must urgently consider and address its negative side-effects and unintended externalities. We must use AI as a powerful tool but not let it become a purpose on its own. AI should be used to help us to bring about what Gerd calls #thegoodfuture, not to replace humans, or to whittle away what makes us human, or to enable a synthetic, machine-led society.
LuN explains why we should welcome smart machines but not seek to build generally intelligent artificial entities (AGIs) – because with digital intelligences, it’s competence that matters, not consciousness (quoting Professor Stuart Russell).

European Futurist Gerd Leonhard often compares the current times to the turbulent years between 1968 and 1973, when the world last underwent a series of seismic shifts in the way things were done. During this period, not only was there a sense of instability, but also one of liberation, and ultimately, progress. It was a time when 'everything changed'. The next 10 years will bring more change than the previous 100 years - a decade of utter transformation is ahead of us. What we do in the next 10 years is likely to set course for the future of humanity, period. Along with the ongoing digital revolution we are now in the midst of the sustainable (green) revolution, and soon to be joined by the human revolution (the convergence of biology and technology). Green is the new digital, and #sustainable is becoming the new profitable. As we leap further into the exponential age, the future is clearly no longer an extension of the present, and it's no longer about 'tomorrow', either - the future is a mindset, and it's already here. We live in a Perma-Change World, and lately an increasingly pessimistic view of the future as well as strange new hopelessness seems to prevail - especially among the Gen Z & Y generations. There are many reasons for this - beyond covid19 or the Russia/Ukraine war - but one reason may also be that the narrative about the future is dominated either by Big Tech (Meta, Google, IBM, Amazon, Baidu etc) or by Hollywood (or rather "StreamyWood" i.e. Netflix et al). It seems to either involve technology saving us (while we, the non-exponential, lame humans, must then merge with it), or technology enslaving us (as in the various black-mirror type dystopias).
I think this is a lousy way to look at the future, and that a more 'protopian' approach see #kevinkelly is much better suited for society, and for shaping our future. We also believe that how we look at the future is existential - as futurist Barbara Hubbard liked to say: 'As we see the future so we act; as we act so we become'.

In this fast-moving keynote at Estoril Conferences see I speak about why I believe that - despite the current woes of global warming, wars and inflation - the future is better than we think. As Kevin Kelly says 'we should be optimistic not because we have less challenges but because we have a lot more capacity to deal with them". Yet technology alone will not save us - we will need purpose and telos (wisdom). Algorithms know the logic of everything but the feeling of nothing. Too much of a good thing (technology) can be a very bad thing (#facebook aka Meta really makes the best example).

This is a special podcast episode that we recorded with Bill Halal on "Speaking Across Differences". Professor Bill Halal and me met once again (following our recent GerdTalks show on ‘Beyond Knowledge); this time for a podcast / audio only discussion about the need for improving how we speak to each other and how to become better listeners. (Text by Bill Halal) “Politics in the US, Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the decline of democracies everywhere show that conflict is the biggest issue of our time. And it is likely to get worse. Social media is driving speech into uncharted territory with disinformation, inflammatory language and biased algorithms. The digital revolution is automating knowledge, driving the world beyond knowledge into subjective consciousness. Most major problems have “rational” solutions that could be good for all sides. (eg, climate, guns, abortion, etc.) But people are acting on emotions, hate, resentment, greed, power and other values and beliefs in the face of a cluster of existential crises like climate change.
We have to learn how to listen to views we don't like, accept compromises, bargain, and offer better solutions. This would require a shift from competitive talking to a cooperative dialogue where all sides try to understand each other and reach agreement. It means that truth is not absolute but something that emerges out of consensus. A “learning society” that can talk across differences. A new field of study is emerging to help us navigate these differences (Daniel Kahneman et al., Noise; Adam Grant, Think Again, etc). This also suggests that centrist politicians could gain power because they are able to unite opposing sides in policies that benefit all. Above all, the basic need is to shift today’s mindset from self-interest, money and power to a global consciousness based on cooperation….”

WHY AND HOW THE FUTURE IS BETTER THAN WE THINK.
When we watch the news, if we tune into Netflix, Hulu or Amazon or AppleTV, or scroll through social media, it is easy to get the impression that there is nothing but bad things coming toward us. Autocratic maniacs, severe climate change disasters, geopolitical power-plays, more pandemics... and of course the robots will take our jobs, and eventually they will harvest our bodies for energy.
Research shows that almost 75% of GenY/Z expect the future to be worse than the present! I believe it is imperative that we change this narrative, because 'as we see the future, so we act; as we act so we become' (Barbara Hubbard)
And the fact is that there are myriads of reasons why we can be excited about the future, such as exponential scientific and technological progress that will allow us to solve our biggest practical problems such as water, food, energy and diseases within the next 2-3 decades.
We must start believing in what I call 'The Good Future' so that we can make the right decisions, today, and we must continue on our path towards global collaboration and global consciousness.
In this talk I outline why and how this can be achieved, and why we have every reason to be excited about the future that we create, together. The future is not something that just happens to us, the future is something that we MAKE!

In this live-stream session (GerdTalks episode #6) I explained why and how Big Blue (Tech) + Big Green + Big Human (and yes, Big Planet) is the recipe for a Good Future.
We have finally reached the technological and societal pivot points (including Covid-19 and now, the utterly worrisome Ukraine/Russia conflict) quickly propelling us out of the fossil fuel age. Rapid and decisive decarbonisation is on the agenda everywhere, and so is using exponential technologies such as AI, Deep Learning and the IoT to dramatically reduce pollution and overall inefficiencies in all sectors of our economies (traffic, transportation, food, construction, IT and many more).
In this talk I outlined why I think 'Green is the new Digital' and what that means for the future of our economies, jobs & work, geopolitics, business and commerce as well as for our personal lives. The next 10 years will bring more change than the previous 100 years - and if you're not on this new 'green everything / circular everything' agenda, you may find yourself outmoded and ignored by 2030.

Here is a crucial message from me, as we are struggling towards the eventual Covid-19 rebound, dealing with the consequences of the Russian war against the Ukraine, finally starting to take real action on climate change, and regulating exponential technologies. Terrible events do not cancel the future – they challenge us to reimagine it !
The more that the present challenges us with ghosts of the past, the more we need the future to balance, inspire and steer us. The old Vikings dreaded fog because it stopped them navigating by the stars. Today’s constellations are also obscured by the fog of war and the ludicrous actions of autocratic regimes. But the stars - and the future - are still there above it all.

These days, democracy seems increasingly under fire -declining globally- and stability is threatened by autocrats. What's next in Democracy?
The Ukraine/Russia war has given me painful reason to think more about the larger context of my main 2022 topic, The Good Future see http://www.goodfuture.live While autocrats seem hell-bent on destroying stability and ending the long-lasting peace in Europe, democracy is apparently in decline for the last decade, globally (read the Freedom House report).
Where is this going? How can we rekindle democracy and fix what is lagging? What's wrong with how we design and implement democracy, right now? And what's the role of technology (like social media) in all this?
In my view, a Good Future is almost synonymous with Democracy - so this is a very big topic for me.

On this Episode: Machines are getting smart. AI, fuelled by machine learning brings the end of routine-tasks for us. Yet it's NOT the end of Human Work - it's just the end of (some) routines. How can we get ready?
I think that in a digital and fully interconnected world (ETA 2030) it will not be our technology that differentiates us - it will be our HUMANITY. It will not be our efficiency, our productivity, our optimization or our smartness and powerful intellect that will 'beat' the machines - it will be our human-only skills. It will be everything that machines have a hard time with. Recall the Moravec Paradox: whatever is simply for a human, is hard for a machine (and vice versa).
So what are 'human-only' skills and traits? To start with, imagination, intuition, emotions, ethics, values, compassion, empathy and consciousness. Machines are binary but humans are multinary. Organisms aren't algorithms (yes, I will explain) and while we should try hard to build machines that have competence we should not strive for them to develop consciousness (see Stuart Russell 'Human Compatible).
If your job is 100% routine i.e. commodity work (and indeed very very few jobs really are) the machines - software and hardware - will take your job. If your job is something like 50% routine you need to start adding unique values that are not routines or can be commoditised. Values that machines won't match anytime soon - what I call the Androrithms.
Thus, the future also entails a total reboot of learning, education and training. STEM education must be matched with what I call HECI - humanities, ethics, creativity and imagination. Watch my 2020 film 'How the future works' www.howthefutureworks.tv Our ultimate job is... to be human!

Facebook / META has become toxic and needs to be purged. In this video I present my case against FB/Meta and explore the future of social media.
AI-fuelled, data-driven and automated 'media' has become extremely powerful and omni-present in our lives. Digital feudalism is the new normal, and the surveillance economy is pervasive. Facebook/Meta is the prime example of what goes wrong when algorithms, an obsession with monetisation and a general lack of respect for human principles and ethics run the show.
Meta/FB's increasing power and enormous technological prowess have resulted in rampant manipulation, fast-spreading misinformation, a boom in fake news, reality distortions and half-truths, and generally have amplified a feeling of despondency and loneliness among many of it's users (particularly on Instagram).
On top of this FB/Meta represents the most perfect surveillance machine ever invented - and we've all been sucked into accepting this as 'normal'. And now, meta-master Zuck wants us to follow him into his glorious Metaverse, where we can be anyone, anywhere, anytime, and literally live in his perfect simulations. Who needs that messy real-life when you can have a perfect virtual life, anyway?
I have a hunch that the Metaverse might turn out to be everything we've ever wanted, but will offer little of what we really NEED. In this video, I contemplate the implications and consequences of the concept that the Metaverse is the next edition of social media (and indeed the Internet)... only 100x as troublesome.
In this video I also address the overall challenges of social media such as the many side-effects of AI-based content automation, and the aberrations resulting from what I call 'digital obesity' and excessive FOMO.
I have come to the conclusion that too many social media companies - and particularly FB/Meta - have become a lot like 'Big Oil' - the externalities of their activities are not their concern; let someone else worry about them!
I believe that we are facing a new threat of 'digital pollution' on top of the environmental pollution we have already caused - and that this has even more potential to damage our societies.

Algorithms know the logic of everything but the feeling of nothing. Everything should be as connected as necessary (eg the IoT) - but not more. AI should be all about competence not about consciousness; and we need a global moratorium on AGI. Data is truly the new oil - but it can also be the 'new plutonium: be careful what you wish for. We will see more change in the next 10 years than in the previous 100 years, as we are heading into a strange, confusing and challenging 'golden era'. The Covid19 crisis is really tough for all of us, but also brings a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rethink what kind of future we want, and how we can realize it - it's a key pivot point in our history. About Gerd's talk: Brave new world! What will be our future? These two years have made adjustments to the future of humanity and determined what scientists, developers and managers will do in the coming years. We are talking not only about medicine, but also about other areas of social policy. A well-known futurist will tell about what awaits us, what technologies will appear, how we will live and work.

As a Futurist and Keynote Speaker I talk to many people from all over the world and from all walks of life. In the past few years I have observed the increased adoption of a rather negative view of the future - and not just because of the recent pandemic. People often cite urgent climate change issues, rising populism, the explosion of fake news, the threats of automation and fear of technological unemployment, out-of-control artificial intelligence and vexing inequality trends as proof that the future is going to be bad, and that we are right to be afraid of it. And of course, Netflix, Hollywood et al are usually pointing us in the same direction: dystopia and doom is certain!
Yet nothing could be further from the truth - not only is the present already better than the past (even with the woes of the pandemic), the FUTURE has strong potential to be even better! The 'only' challenge is that while we will likely have all the tools (science and technology) within a decade, we must also have the TELOS i.e. the will, the purpose and the wisdom.
In other words, it will come down to our ethics and values, to global collaboration and to a collective definition of what kind of future we want (rather than what future we can have), and a collective consensus on how we can best achieve it. And yes, I strongly believe that humans are capable of such collaboration, that we are kind rather than evil, in principle, and that we are capable of making the right choices.
“The Good Future” film is meant as an introduction to what will become the dominant focus of my work, going forward: What would a Good Future look like, and what can we do right here and now to bring it about?
I am presenting this film as a mere opener on these often complex topics, fully aware that I am only grazing the surface of each issue - but rest assured that the details will follow: Continuing with the themes from my last book “Technology vs Humanity”, I am rolling out a new series of speaking topics on the “Good Future” (such as new talks on decarbonization and sustainability, capitalism, technology regulation and social media), I am working on a new ‘Handbook for the Good Future’, and I am looking at producing a Good Future feature film or TV series, in addition to launching a new web-tv show on the Good Future.

How could social media become 'human' again? How can we stop the disinformation, dehumanisation and dataism that has resulted from social media's algorithmic obsessions? I foresee that the EXTERNALTIES i.e. the consequences of unmitigated growth of exponential digital technologies will become just as big as the consequences of climate change. In fact, today, the social media industry already has quite a few parallels to the oil, gas and coal business: while private make huge profits from extracting the 'oil' (i.e. user data), the external damage is left to society and governments to fix. This needs to change! In this keynote I make some precise suggestions as to how that could happen.
The more we connect the more we must protect what makes us human. Technology is not what we seek, but how we seek. Algorithms know the value of everything but the feeling of nothing. Too much of a good thing can be a very bad thing (read more about that at https://www.futuristgerd.com/toomuchtech)

Technology is exponential, but humans are not. Whatever is easy for a computer is hard for a computer, and vice versa. The more we connect the more we must protect what makes us human. Technology is not what we seek but how we seek. The biggest danger, today, is not the machines will take over, but that we become too much like them.

There is nothing more important to the ongoing success of an organization than the future- preparedness of its employees, key decision makers and board of directors. The actions leaders take based on their views and perceptions of the near future determine whether their organisation will succeed in these times of permanant VUCA and exponential technological / societal shifts, or will be disrupted into irrelevance.
Yet paradoxically, while foresight and scenario planning are vital to the success of the individual as well as the organisation, it is rare that enterprises and other organisations spend enough time and resources on this. All too often, digital transformation just means investing in more technology to make things more efficient, rather than using technology to actually BECOME DIFFERENT and do new things.

Extreme capitalism (as practiced in the US and in Brazil, for example) and 'corporate capitalism' is the root cause underlying many of our largest challenges today, such as inequality and social or racial injustice. Accelerated by the Covid-19 crisis, a realization is emerging: capitalism-as-we-know-it is not fit for solving global warming or for dealing with the threat of artificial-super-intelligence (ASI). We must go BEYOND GDP and beyond the 'invisible hand'. As Marc Benioff likes to say: "Capitalism as we know it is dead".

How, where, when and WHY we work is changing rapidly as the Megashifts such as digitisation, virtualisation, automation and cognification (AI or better, IA) accelerate and increasingly result in the dis/replacement of human routines. Yet this is only the beginning, and the End of Routine does NOT mean the end of human work.
As technology advances, so too will the need for broad educational reform to shift people's focus from mostly routine tasks to more future-oriented, creative, and human only forms of work. This will have dramatic implications on society as a whole because as I like to say, "If you work like a robot, a robot will take your job."

We are living in the era of big tech monopolies, but unlike the oil and gas conglomerates of the past, the underlying problems with Google and Facebook owning or dominating every aspect of the internet are less apparent, especially as these selfsame companies that also dominate the story of the future. IMHO the future debate needs to be re-integrated into civil society. The vision of a 'good future' is not a question of software - it's a question of human-ware.

The societal impacts of IoT are enormous, yet still relatively uncharted and generally regarded as externalities. While technological progress is certain to bring vast economic and societal benefit, we cannot ignore the potential unintended consequences of this exponential transformation.
Thinking beyond the financial bottom lines, profit and growth, the much bigger questions deal with what Ged Leonhard calls #digitalethics and general human flourishing: What will be the impact of IoT on society and culture, jobs and the global workforce? What is our role as business and technology leaders in preparing the world and the workforce for the exponential challenges and opportunities speeding towards us?
In this session, Gerd explores the ethics of IoT and the critical role of human ingenuity in designing and shepherding its impact.

In seiner lebhaften Präsentation unter dem Titel „Die digitale Transformation von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft – die nächsten 5 Jahre“ skizzierte Gerd Leonhard das exponentielle Wachstum von Technologie und die Auswirkungen auf verschiedenste Lebens- und Arbeitsbereiche.
Genetic Engineering, DNA Sequencing, Augmented Reality, Remote Diagnoses und Künstliche Intelligenz waren dabei nur ein paar der Schlagworte, die er aufgriff, um zukünftige Entwicklungen aufzuzeigen. Ganz klar ist für ihn der Wandel von Produkt & Besitz zu Service, Zugang und Erfahrung. Gute Denkanstösse, wohin sich Geschäftsmodelle entwickeln könnten, wenn Angebote virtuell und Produkte zur Software werden, gab er zahlreich. Und forderte gleichsam das Publikum auf, die Zukunft selbst mit zu entdecken aber auch aktiv zu gestalten.
