We’ve been looking at 15 hymns from the book of Psalms (120-134), originally sung by Jewish worshippers on their pilgrimage to God’s Temple in Jerusalem. They are called “Songs of Ascent” since they speak of ascending to the Temple, which was located atop Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Though they were originally for the Hebrews on their long journey, they matter a lot to us, because we too are traveling, by faith, as believers in Christ Jesus. The author of each letter is Jesus. Christ told the church at Philadelphia that he was not only the holy one, but also the true one (singular). He assures them that he is not only holy and true, but he is in charge and has been given both the throne and authority of King David, as promised! Philadelphia was commended because when everything was against them, they kept God’s word and did not deny his name. They were unmovable in their Christian duties even as the hounds of hell bore down on them. This letter to Pergamum teaches us that those who walk in the fear of the Lord have nothing to fear from him and will receive his mercy, but those who treat Christ with contempt have reason to fear and tremble. Smyrna was beautiful with paved streets, a library, gymnasium and shrine to the Greek writer Homer, who may have been born there. It was known for its temple to the goddess Cybele, as well as Imperial Cult temples to Caesars Tiberius and Hadrian. The Smyrnan's knew that the hour of their death was imminent. Yet they were told “Do not fear what you are about to suffer”. This letter puts death (both for them and for us) in proper perspective. The people are walking in unbelief regarding God's promises, and have hardened hearts toward the God of their fathers. He reminds them they are in the state they are in, not because he has been unfaithful, but because they have been. God wants godly offspring to delight in. Pastor Marc Sharp continues the series on the minor prophets with the book of Zechariah, the longest of the twelve books. In some ways it is a difficult book to understand and often neglected by Christians. Zechariah is often referred to in the New Testament, with about 54 passages from Zechariah echoed in about 67 different places in the NT, with the lion’s share of these found in the book of Revelation. Though it was written to a people in the 6th Century BC, and addressed their real world concerns and challenges, it speaks comforting promises to us as well, if we have ears to hear what it tells us about God’s love for us today. This world is not our ultimate homeland, and we need to understand that God is in control even when it seems at times that he isn’t. The future he has planned for us is bright, hopeful and absolutely guaranteed by the One who can’t lie! The book of Haggai is presented by Pastor Marc Sharp as he continues the series on the minor prophets. In Haggai, God is portrayed as the Sovereign One who controls the fortunes of both his people and of the nations. He controls nature, motivates his people to action, and establishes and deposes kings and kingdoms. However, the things of God were not being attending to by his people. Instead, they pursued comfort, economic security, even prosperity, while God’s interests were totally neglected. Likewise, today people will attach themselves to churches, ministries, and theologies, but not to Jesus. They will do the bare minimum to claim an association with the people of God, all the while ignoring the things of God! The series on the minor prophets is continued by Pastor Marc Sharp. Today's message is from the book of Zephaniah. As other prophets have done, Zephaniah confirms that judgement is coming, for among the people no one truly inquires of God at all. They have exchanged truth for cultural acceptance. They say in their hearts, “The Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill.” They stupidly believe that God is powerless to either judge or bless. Then suddenly Zephaniah switches to promises of a hopeful future for all peoples, and he uses some of the most hopeful and joyous language found in the Minor Prophets to do this. He tells everyone who will listen that the Day of the Lord is a day where the wicked perish and the righteous are rescued and redeemed. This not only has immediate implications for Judah and the rest of the world, it also has implications for us who live at the end of the ages! By the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama is a simple pile of large granite stones on which is etched the Bible passage for today : “When your children shall ask you in the time to come, saying, What mean these stones? Then you shall tell them how you made it over.” A testimony of hard times and struggle. Testimonies are not free - they are costly, often coming through pain, persecution, trial, or warfare. But even so, God answers prayer, brings deliverance, and rains down mercy all the time. Christians should be the hardest workers and be content without complaining, as though we are working for the Lord (because we are!).

Then Paul says “God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved”. We also have been chosen by God, not because of anything good we have ever done or ever will do. Paul says this happened even before creation, before we were conceived or the stars were hung in the sky. We stand in awe of a God who loves us like that!
Pastor Marc Sharp continues our series on the two books of Thessalonians as the author, the Apostle Paul, begins chapter two of the second book by clearing up remaining questions about the return of Jesus Christ. This is the 6th time in the 2 letters he has addressed the time of the end. He talks about great mysteries, yet not in great detail. Why? He also talks about a forged letter with false information claiming that Christ had already come, and they had somehow missed it. So Paul reminds them of what he had previously said concerning what must take place before the coming of the Lord. He points to 2 signs - a rebellion occurring and the appearance of a mysterious “man of lawlessness”.
Pastor Marc Sharp continues our series on the two letters the Apostle Paul wrote to the believers at Thessalonica by opening the second letter, which was written shortly after the first one. After the first letter, Paul got word that some things were still unclear to them or had been intentionally distorted by people with bad intentions. And, there were reports of bad behavior that Paul addresses pastorally in the 2nd letter. He points them again to the coming of the Lord, and what it promises for both them and their wicked persecutors. God will surely balance the books!

In this letter to the believers at Thessalonica, Paul has reconnected with the Thessalonians, shared his ongoing love for them, commended them for their spiritual progress and love for one another, as well as the example they are setting for the other believers in their region. They have a lot to consider, so Paul selects his final words carefully. If he were to give them one more spiritual “to do” item, they may become overwhelmed. But if he doesn’t keep holiness before them as the goal, they could start to conform to the culture around them. Sound familiar?

But Jesus didn’t give them the specific answers they asked for. Why? Why would he not be very specific about such a major event as his return?

It is far easier to criticize, shove, and demand our own way than it is to love!
Previously, we learned that Paul spent the first three chapters of Thessalonians rejoicing that the believers continued in the faith, in spite of the persecution that they had been undergoing. In this next part of our series, Pastor Marc Sharp continues with Paul instructing the Thessalonians about how to live in Christ now that they are following him. He begins by urging the Thessalonians to be distinct by pursuing holiness. Paul placed a very high value on the evidence of a transformed life. He didn’t emphasize merely believing a set of facts about Christ and his work, but rather he was adamant that our belief must impact the way we live our lives. Did you know that to call Jesus “Lord” (the Greek is kyrios, meaning "master"), as Paul did, acknowledges that he possesses you as his own property, literally his slave?

There is nothing more discouraging to a believer than to watch someone they love as their faith fails. Paul had much joy when he heard that the Thessalonians were pressing forward in Christ, despite tribulation and persecution. He assures them that even he is not exempt from anything they are suffering, but that they are in this thing together. There is much to be said about laboring and suffering together, in some form of community. Jesus planned a faithful community, confessing the same central truths, but with different strengths and weaknesses so that we would help each other in 1,000 different ways. Human beings alone, in all creation, have the honor and dignity of being made in the “image” and “likeness” of God. The image has been corrupted and polluted by mankind’s fall into sin. If you are a believer, God has washed you, sanctified you, and justified you. He has given you the Holy Spirit to dwell inside of you, not to condemn you but to transform you back into the image of God, and to help you “flee sexual immorality” and “glorify God in your body”. Where are you broken sexually? Where have you failed to glorify God in your body and with your sexuality?
God created us in his image. After the fall, he showed us the perfect image of God in Christ. He redeemed us so that we could be restored to the image of God. He placed his Holy Spirit to dwell within us as a temple and to help us. He has purchased us at the high cost of his own blood. What should be our only response to all of this amazing, glorious, breath-taking truth?
In part 10 of our core beliefs series, Pastor Marc Sharp discusses the consummation of all things, including the physical and visible return of the Lord Jesus. His return will be glorious! Today, we continue our "PROOF" series with God’s Overcoming Grace. Overcoming Grace is how God works in our lives to transform our rebellion against him into unconditional surrender so that we freely repent and recognize Christ as the risen King. The idea of Overcoming Grace is really a way to state the miracle of how God’s Spirit comes to those who are spiritually dead, wanting absolutely nothing to do with Christ or his kingdom, and works in them to abandon our self-idolatry and worldly desires and to desire to be reconciled to God, longing for holiness and increasingly surrendering to Christ and his way.
Mothers are managers, teachers, pastors, doctors, referees, counselors, mechanics, chefs, and so forth, all within the context of the miracle we call “motherhood”! The essence of motherhood is not maternity, but womanhood. With this idea that “womanhood is the essence of motherhood”, today we attempt to address the culture of misogyny, sexism and the abuse of women that the Lord has allowed to be exposed in recent months, directly with the heart of God the Father.

In today's market-oriented society, we are constantly being sold, coerced, and manipulated into being aligned with and branded by various products, beliefs, and "norms". If we are believers in and followers of Jesus Christ, then we have already been "branded" by Him and the power of His name, which can keep us from falling into traps skillfully laid out by enemies of the cross.

The CEO model of church leadership is not biblical. God actually intended the oversight of the church to be handled by a team of godly men who were more concerned with souls than dollars. The elders’ primary role is really to be a co-equal shepherd (spiritual care provider) with the primary pastor-teacher!
All true believers accept the actual, physical resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead as historical fact. The resurrection has as much credibility as any other event in all of recorded history. By his rising we are commissioned to proclaim his good news authoritatively and expand the reach of his kingdom. Because he lives, we can rest in the promise that death truly has no power over us and that we will one day rise just like he did and join him forever!
Christ didn’t die to start a religion, or make you behave, or simply to enable you to enjoy a glorious afterlife. His purpose was to make a brand new kind of people for his own possession and fellowship. His intention was for this state to begin now, and not only when we die or the world ends.
All of us who claim to be believers in and followers of Jesus Christ have a responsibility to proclaim His message, to demonstrate His power, proclaim His authority, and to represent His presence. However, we cannot convince anyone. The Holy Spirit’s job is to convince people. Our responsibility lies in proclamation and nothing more. We are not God’s salesmen, but his ambassadors.
3.2 billion people worldwide have never (or only minimally) heard the story of Jesus! Additionally, 81% of Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus have no contact with a single Christ follower. That may be sad, but what can you possibly do about it? What should you do about it? A lot actually!
Our prayer is that we will be a church that has highly-developed spiritual senses to discern what is and is not the gospel, and that we will be clear in the proclamation and application of it. We must all become so clear on this all important message, so that we can encourage each other to believe it fully and apply it deeply.
Our mission as a church is to proclaim the message of Christ Jesus clearly, backed by Christ’s authority and assured of his presence, in order to make disciples of all nations - a daunting task indeed, but one which cannot fail because it is the intent of almighty God to have a people for himself.
As individuals and as a church, let us commit our hearts to knowing Jesus in purity, undistracted by the values and idols of this world. Let us be found as a people increasingly dead to sin and self. Let us identify with his death and resurrection and all of it’s attendant power that gives us 24/7 access to the throne room, as well as a newer, better perspective. Let us reign as his ambassadors, passionately making God’s appeal to the fallen, broken and sinful world.
