A 24-year veteran of the underground Hip-Hop scene and Turntablist community, DJ Killa-Jewel has rocked decks across North America, Europe and Asia at some of the most prestigious clubs, concerts and festivals to date. Well-known for her collaboration with Thud Rumble’s DJ Q-Bertin his ‘Do It Yourself Vol. 2’ DVD, and extensive touring with Canadian actor and director Robert Lepage, Killa-Jewel’s participation in numerous DJ battles including the Canadian DMCs, ITF Scratching Categories (NYC), the World Vestax Extravaganza (Japan), and the Red Bull Thre3Style Canadian Finals (Calgary) anchored her place amongst the best in the industry.

The world-renowned turntablist has propelled to the top of her class by fusing hip-hop with the theatre milieu, composing “turntable music” live for theatrical productions. In 2014, she unofficially released her first album, Saudade, followed by self-produced EP Reckless in 2020, featuring collaborations with Nate Husser, Wasiu, Ras Kass and Sereni-T. Reckless is a project that brings together the classic boom bap hip-hop era with the dry, bassy, 808 rhythms and sounds of mainstream cloud rap. With the use of her own voice as a singer on the record, she solidified her status as both a producer and performing artist.

This year, Killa-Jewel announced her signing to Hydrophonik Records (mother company Indica Records) via Universal Music Canada, and is set to release her next EP, Sagittarius, on October 22nd, 2021. On her most recent releases with the label, PixStar and Pipe Dreams, she marries two different worlds; one for the hardcore turntablist fans who enjoy a range of different scratch techniques, and the other for those whose ears are more attune to the time signature and electronically-synthesized sounds of modern-day trap music.

DJ Killa-Jewel’s influences are varied, adding to her ever-changing complexity and uniqueness. She writes all of her own music and spends a large amount of time considering conceptual takes on her work, which bring an element of theatricalism and originality to her work. Her use of sampling feels so distinct and personal to her, likely due to the fact that by her own admission, she keeps running a list of songs that make her feel something, that act as inspiration to her and help her avoid any creative slumps.

Having faced multiple artistic reinventions throughout the past couple of years, Killa-Jewel changes her style and evolves at a constant pace to encapsulate the essence of a modern artist. Her main goal as an artist is to bring listeners on a sonic journey, an aim that ties in closely with her personal philosophy of viewing life as one big trip. She produces her music like this, starting at the beginning without ever planning where the track will end up. DJ Killa-Jewel hopes listeners are taken on this same journey, being continuously inspired and surprised by her music, never knowing what to expect and loving her all the more for it.

Bauer Radio's Kiss has announced the winner of its talent search competition as AJ King – a 28 year old student and part-time DJ from Wembley.

He beat thousands of hopefuls in the 8-week competition to win a slot on the youth station's line-up.

AJ said: "I'm so overwhelmed that it's come down to me. There was so much talent in the final groups and I'm just glad all my hard work has finally paid off!"

Since the start of the year, Kiss has been looking for radio stars of the future and putting the finalists through their paces. Live auditions took place in shopping centres, with 25 candidates picked for the Kiss Academy. They were whittled down to just 10 before listener votes helped pick the final five.

In the latter stages, hopefuls were given a Blackberry – to tie in with the promotion's sponsorship deal – and asked to do video reports on a variety of topics.

Andy Roberts, Kiss Group Programme Director told us: "From day one of this activity we set out to find a new presenter for Kiss and give people outside of the industry a chance to be that person. At Kiss we're proud in finding, nurturing and home growing talent and AJ now joins an award winning team at the World Famous Kiss".

Check out Becky Hill interview with KVM Mag's very own Laura Alexandra.

With her highly mature, resonant voice and R&B-influenced style, Becky Hill first came to the public's attention competing on series one of The Voice UK. Ultimately reaching the show's semi-final round, Hill became the first contestant to score a number one single when "Gecko (Overdrive)," her collaboration with Oliver Heldens, topped the U.K. singles chart in 2014. A compilation album collecting songs from 2013 to 2018, Get to Know Becky Hill, landed in the U.K. Top 20 in 2019. She followed it with her first official studio album, Only Honest on the Weekend, in 2021. It featured hit collaborations with Sigala ("Heaven on My Mind"), David Guetta ("Remember"), and more. She was subsequently featured on Wilkinson's charting single "Here for You."

Born on February 14, 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, Hill was no stranger to music when she first auditioned for the then-new The Voice UK in 2012. As a teenager, she had sung with the acoustic rock & soul group Shaking Trees, which created some local buzz and received several plays on BBC Radio. On The Voice UK, she made it to the semifinal with her powerful renditions of R&B songs by the likes of John Legend and others before being eliminated. By her own admission, she was a novice in the music industry game and it took her 18 months to finally get a record deal. In the meantime, however, her sultry, soulful, older-than-her-years voice was highly sought-after by dance artists looking for feature vocalists. Her first recorded appearance, on British drum'n'bass artist Wilkinson's single "Afterglow," went to number eight on the U.K. singles chart. She then appeared on Rudimental's single "Powerless," singing with them at several U.K. festivals in 2013, including Glastonbury.

Following her chart-topping success with Heldens, Hill worked extensively with London-based dance producer MNEK and issued her debut solo single, "Caution to the Wind." Released in 2014, it showcased a shift toward a more electronica-influenced sound, with twinkling melodies and production reminiscent of Four Tet. The Eko EP appeared in 2017, and she went to number 11 on the U.K. singles chart with 2018's "Back & Forth," a collaboration with producers MK and Jonas Blue. In 2019, Hill reached the U.K. Top Ten with both "Wish You Well" featuring Sigala and "Lose Control" with Meduzaand Goodboys, which also topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. They were among the hits featured on the Top 20-charting compilation Get to Know in 2019. She had another hit with Sigala in 2020 with "Heaven on my Mind," and 2021's "Remember," a collaboration with David Guetta, reached number 13 in the U.K. The latter two songs appeared on Hill's debut album, Only Honest on the Weekend, in August 2021. Her Christmas EP appeared near the end of the year. "Here for You," another Wilkinson collaboration, reached the U.K. Top 50 in early 2022. Hill also appeared on the Galantis single "Run," and guested on songs by David Guetta ("Crazy What Love Can Do") and Joel Corry ("History"). "Heaven" and "Side Effects" (with Lewis Thompson) appeared in 2023.

LOST INTERVIEWS '3 MINUTE SILENCE' WRETCH 32
5 Minutes with Laura Alexandra

Laura invites Wretch 32 for quick chat back to the KVM Mag Playground studio to talk about his new single.

British rapper Jermaine Scott (aka Wretch 32) rose out of London's Tiverton Estate projects in Tottenham, along with his peers Devlin, Chipmunk, Kano, Stormzy, and Skepta. In the latter half of the 2000s, he joined grime collectives Combination Chain Gang and the Movement, and put out solo efforts as mixtapes. With 2007's Teacher's Training Day and 2008's Wretchrospective, Wretch 32 started showing mainstream potential, cleverly pairing hip-hop and grime in his songs. Ministry of Sound signed him by the decade's end, and Wretch's first major-label single, "Traktor," was released in January 2011, debuting at number five on the U.K. singles chart. His second studio album, Black and White, followed in mid-2011 preceded by two singles, the Stone Roses-sampling "Unorthodox" and the U.K. number one single "Don't Go." 2012 saw Wretchfronting a campaign for Adidas for the 2012 London Olympics while also heading out on tour with Example, the mixtape Wretchercise also appeared at the end of the year and featured guest spots from the likes of Kano, Krept, and Chip. While working on his third studio album, Wretch premiered two singles in 2013 -- "Blackout" and "Doing OK" -- and revealed he had been working with producer Knox Brown. After a year out of the spotlight, he returned in November 2014 with the single "6 Words," which reached number eight in the U.K. charts. Wretch also appeared in 2015 on the U.K. Top Five single "IN2" by WSTRN, while continuing to work on his third album, Growing Over Life, which saw release in 2016. Critics commended the album for some of his most honest lyrics and deepest narratives yet. While promoting the record, Wretch revealed that he had already gotten to work on its follow-up. The effort, titled FR32, saw release in late 2017 and featured guest performances from the likes of Kojey Radical, Avelino, and Kojo Funds.

It’s been two years since Wretch 32 released his fifth studio LP Upon Reflection, a 12-track body of work that saw additional assists from Ghetts, Giggs, Talay Riley, Burna Boy, Avelino, and Knucks. While there hasn’t been much heard from the London emcee musically since, he did team up with Alec and Alex Boateng last year to become the creative director for their 0207 Def Jam imprint. Currently, the North Londoner works alongside A&R director Char Grant to provide strategic advice and help shape the fledgling label’s musical direction.

This week, Wretch surprised fans with another big announcement — that he is releasing a new EP titled little BIG man, which officially lands this Friday (May 28). The project will see nine new cuts with contributions from the likes of K-Trap, Nafe Smallz, Tiggs Da Author, M Huncho, and SL. That’s not all, either — he also took to social media to liberate “3 Minute Silence,” a presumed sequel to 2018’s “1 Minute Silence.” As with its predecessor, “3 Minute Silence” is a direct message to the powers that be and the racial equality and injustice that continues to plague nations all over the planet.

Imanbek has burst onto the scene in a way most young producers can only dream of. His remix of Saint Jhn’s ‘Roses’, which he produced while holding down a day job at his local train station in Kazakhstan, now has over a billion streams on Spotify, reached #1 in the UK singles chart and #4 on the US billboard chart, catapulting the relatively unknown producer to stardom. Now he makes his D4 D4NCE debut remixing London based duo Supafly’s ‘Fly With The Angles’ featuring Canadian songstress Kiesza. LOST INTERVIEWS 'CROWDED ROOM' CONOR MAYNARD

Conor Maynard in conversation with Laura Alexandra.
Conor talks about working with Craig David, flying out to Miami to shoot his video and escaping 'UK's Justin Bieber title.

British singer-songwriter Conor Maynard released a new song “Crowded Room” along with a music video on April 17, 2021. The song is his first single as an independent artist. LOST INTERVIEWS 'THE RECIPE FOR SUCCESS' BAKERY BOYS

Bakery Boys are a collective of London-based creatives with a passion for music, art & fashion.
Laura Alexandra chops it up with the talented brothers Shack and Ace Boogie and long-term friend Dirty Dre aka – THE BAKERY BOYS. Their popular single Get Away, was named 1Xtra’s Track of the Week. Not becoming too complacent of their recent triumph, the boys dropped another track, Until The Day.

Their latest effort offers words of inspiration, urging youngsters to reach their goals. The four-minute slick banger features indie band The Thirst’s Mensa Hart and Lock Laser who is the brother Shack and Ace. It comes to no surprise that the brothers formed a strong bond for music as their father was in the 90s cult group, Soul II Soul.

Apart from making waves on the music scene, supporting the likes of Big Sean and Labrinth and performing twice at the Wireless Festival, these guys have their fingers in more than one business pie. Their fashion label, Justin Hustlin, was the fast selling streetwear on ASOS and their social organisation Justinspire, sees them mentoring and volunteering in their local community – breaking down misconceptions that rappers are all about the money and honies!

SUPAFLY '60 MINUTES OF SUPAFLY' HOSTED BY JERMEALE
Jermeale speaks to the talented 'Supafly' from New York to London and Ghana.

They discuss almost working with DMX before the legendary hiphop artist was admitted to New York hospital after suffering a heart attack on Friday, April 2nd 2021. They also chat about sampling a little Phil Collins and him loving their track and giving them the green light.

Supafly is best known for 2005's "Let's Get Down", which was a club hit around the world and used by the Australian television network FOX8 as their summer theme song; and for "Moving Too Fast" in late 2006, which sampled the Phil Collins' hit "Another Day in Paradise". Supafly picked up the Best Newcomer Award at the 2006 Urban Music Awards.

Supafly's sound is a blend of reggae, hip hop and dance. Their success has led them to sold out tours, performing to crowds of up to 25,000.

Now London based, the essence of their sun-filled sound developed partly from Mister P and wOne's stint in Australia. Inspired by the sunshine and the live music scene in Melbourne, their time away proved to be an inspiration for Supafly's signature tune, "Let's Get Down". It was written on one of the hottest days in Australia's history.

Fly With The Angels (Imanbek Remix)
Imanbek has burst onto the scene in a way most young producers can only dream of. His remix of Saint Jhn’s ‘Roses’, which he produced while holding down a day job at his local train station in Kazakhstan, now has over a billion streams on Spotify, reached #1 in the UK singles chart and #4 on the US billboard chart, catapulting the relatively unknown producer to stardom. Now he makes his D4 D4NCE debut remixing London based duo Supafly’s ‘Fly With The Angles’ featuring Canadian songstress Kiesza. With its thick, rubbery bassline, atmospheric builds and irresistibly catchy melody, once again we see Imanbek’s Midas touch remix abilities.

LOST INTERVIEWS 'LEVEL UP' SWAY DASAFO
In this episode of 'Lost Interviews' Soala Brogan interviews 'TOP BOY' actor and musician Sway Dasafo.

Sway (Dasafo)is a UK based Music Artist, Executive Producer and Entrepreneur. Sway was born and raised in North London, and after spending a short time in Ghana during early childhood he returned to England where he developed a fascination for English literature.

He became the first unsigned rapper to win a MOBO Award prior to the release of an official album. And decided he would prefer to release his first album ‘This Is My Demo’ independently, giving his demo directly to the people rather than the record companies. Tracks such as ‘Flo Fashion’, ‘Up Your Speed’ and the Al Shux (Jay Z, Kendrick Lemar, Nas) produced UK top 40 ‘Little Derek’ became genre-defining moments of this era.

In 2006 ‘This Is My Demo’, became one of the most critically acclaimed UK Rap albums of all time, and Sway then went on to be the first British rapper to win an American BET Hip Hop Award as well as landing a spot on the Mercury Music Prize Shortlist. Amongst Sway’s supporters are international superstars, Akon, Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell Williams who had all displayed an interest in signing the UK rapper to their own label imprints. After months of consideration, Sway decided he would become part of Akon’s international Konvict Music family alongside the likes of Lady Gaga and T-Pain.

Sway was also the only other rapper to be featured on Lupe Fiasco’s US Billboard number 1 album ‘Lasers’ released in 2011.

Sway’s next single ‘Level Up’ written with Flux Pavilion (Kanye West, Jay Z, Example) became Sway’s highest charting single to date landing at number 8 in the Official UK National charts.

Sway now turns his attention to building a label and curating talent. Through his search he came across south London rapper/singer Tiggs Da Author, who he took under his wing and signed to his revived Dcypha Productions label as well as signing YouTube star KSI. In the same year Sway released a long awaited third album entitled ‘Deliverance’, which he describes as “an affirmation of my intentions”. The album was released with no lead singles or videos, as Sway wanted it to serve its true purpose as “a project to be discovered”.

As a writer and producer Sway amassed over a billion music streams world wide across platforms such as Youtube, Spotify, Apple Music and he continues to work with emerging talent as well as accomplished creatives to push musical boundaries forward.

New Reign Productions, houses a stable of music producers, graphic designers, directors, song writers and other creative minds. As a group they are set to release an array of singles in the near future.

Whilst working on a new album entitled ‘Next Chapter’ Sway decided to revert back to releasing under his full original artist name ‘Sway Dasafo’. Now armed with an arsenal of new music Sway walks into 2019 with a plethora of collaborative projects (Brillionaires, 5ive 9ine) and new music ventures to look forward too.

Sway’s ‘Next Chapter’ album will be accompanied with a book and short film and is his self-proclaimed his best music to date.

LOST INTERVIEWS 'HOUSTON GEMS' GARY MICHAEL HOUSTON
In this episode of 'LOST INTERVIEWS' Gary Michael Houston talks about his late great auntie Whitney Houston, Kanye West and conversing with Jay Z in central London with Fidel Channer.

Gary Michael Houston was born and raised in South Plainfield, New Jersey. His life has been like 24/7 music school, being out in the spotlight is in his blood. He comes from a long line of musicians. The most iconic being his beloved late great aunt, and mentor, pop-icon Whitney Houston.

Being the eldest grandson of gospel legend Cissy Houston, he gained an immense affinity for not only music but the music business itself at a very early and intimate age.

Having the the same roots of hip hop, from gospel to pop to his current genre, he has been exposed to the entertainment industry on a high level. “I’ve been making music since forever. I’ve watched people become successful and make mistakes…. I feel like I’m more seasoned for this type of game," says Houston, who writes and co-produces all of his own material both vocally and visually.

Gary uses his background as ammunition to succeed and to help others achieve their dreams. As he enters into his own adulthood and career, Gary chooses to use his talent and ambitions to spread the message that we are all self-defined and able to overcome anything, the true message of hip hop itself.

Since he was 4 years old, Gary has been diligently working on perfecting his passion. His surroundings and family have enabled him to become a complete, multifaceted performing artist. Over the years, Houston has released a number of recordings including 3 successful independent projects (Corruption 1-3) and one compilation mix tape. He has been featured in Jenesis Magazine (online) as one of the Top Three artists that are in "Popular Demand," Gary is constantly growing his fan-base with what he likes to call the "E-merican Experience."

In the UK, Gary has been twice featured in NME Magazine, and performed in front of a sell-out crowd at the prestigious Jazz Cafe in Camden, London.

He believes "you can be anything you want to be. I just want people to dare to be different. You can't let society define you. Most listeners will only listen to what is deemed as being mainstream and by mainstream I mean "acceptable." Hip-Hop is a culture, a lifestyle that has many forms and includes people from all walks of life. I want people who listen to my music to experience that first hand. I want to change lives…not just minds." Refusing to live up to anyone else’s image of what he “should be”, Houston continues to push his own personal limits daily and vows to never fall into the surroundings that just keep him comfortable nor will he forget his mission with his success.

Looking ahead to the future, Gary is gearing up for his latest project and first release in almost two years, The Collins LP. He hopes to continue expanding his reach at home and across the pond into Europe and Africa. Gary Michael Houston, is a gentleman to keep an eye and ear out for. He is destined for success not solely based on his heritage and talent, but also his work ethic and determination as he navigates the arena of music and leaves his imprint on society.

LOST INTERVIEWS 'LIVE IN THE STUDIO SOMEWHERE IN LONDON' WITH DYLAN DILINJAH presented by Laura Alexandra
Known by many as “Dylan from MTVs Making the Band/Daband”, Dylan Dilinjah shot to fame as one of the shows most memorable characters and has since proven himself as a credible and talented Caribbean hip hop artist.

Dylan DilinJah was born in Brooklyn, NY to West Indian parents, and grew up being exposed to both Caribbean and American cultures. Dylan went to school both in New York and the Caribbean where he excelled, particularly in writing and displayed a strong natural talent for composition and prose at an early age. After being a selector and reggae/hip hop DJ for a period of time, he decided to pursue his love for writing music. Dylan DilinJah found a local studio and recorded over 80 songs, sold demos and performed in showcases before deciding to take his talent to a greater audience.

Dylan auditioned for the MTV show "Making the Band" fronted by Diddy/P Diddy and was chosen out of 40,000 hopefulls to be one of six to form the group Daband.

The group later went on to achieve Platinum success and worldwide TV recognition. After the show's contractual end Dylan embarked on 2 successful United States tours, various shows in the Caribbean, and released mixtapes that have been very well received by music lovers worldwide.

There are quite a few things you may remember about Making The Band 2’s Dylan Dili, but arguably one of the most memorable is Dylan being immortalized by Dave Chappelle.
But, Dili has worked consistently since the show to turn his reality television fame into a music career.
Dili’s Pain 2 Power dropped in September and is currently up for Grammy consideration. “I was very Kanye on this one where I wanted perfection,” he says. “We’re in consideration right now. It’s not a nomination yet, but we’re in consideration for a Grammy.”

He wasn’t too excited about seeing himself on Making the Band 2.

“I hated watching myself because you don’t see how you are until you watch yourself,” he tells ESSENCE. Dili explains that it’s hard for viewers to understand the stress and strain of the grind. “Do they see the stress, the tears, the crying, the frustration, the lack of sleep, the constant grind? Do they see what you’ve really gone through? Nah.”
Meeting Dave Chappelle was “dope.”

Chappelle immortalized Dili in the now iconic Chappelle’s Show skit that poked fun at the hip-hop artist. “I had never met Chappelle before that and it was the most amazing link up ever and we had shots. We had a few shots and it cooled us out and I can’t wait to see him again.” And, if you’re curious Dili’s top five rappers don’t include himself. He lists in no particular order: Tupac, Eminem, Andre 3000, Lil’ Wayne and Lauryn Hill.

On missing the opportunity to work with Kanye West and Will. I. Am.

Da Band had the opportunity to work with the two artists before they became known wolrdwide. Dili says when he met Kanye they discussed working on Da Band’s album, but the group shut down the idea. Then, when Diddy introduced the group to Will. I. Am, it seemed the group wasn’t really feeling him either. “The Will.i.am sound wasn’t with them and they all left the room. The only people left was me and Sara, then Sara left and it was just me and Will.I.Am was like, ‘I love what you’re doing, but if the whole group is not doing it what can I do?'”

And, he’s still cool with Diddy.

Dylan has a Ciroc sponsorship with the premium vodka brand recently sponsoring his Pain 2 Pow

British singer Becky Hill released her version of "Forever Young" on November 13, 2020 with at least 10p from every download of the song being donated to the food charity FareShare. Hill's cover was selected as the soundtrack to the 2020 McDonald's UK Christmas TV advert; as part of the promotion, McDonald's donated five million meals to FairShare during the 2020 festive season. Becky Hill's version spent six weeks in the UK charts peaking at 35.

With her highly resonant voice and R&B-influenced style, Becky Hill first came to the public's attention competing on series one of The Voice UK. Ultimately reaching the show's semifinal round, Hill emerged a fan favorite and became the first Voice UK contestant to score a number one single when "Gecko (Overdrive)," her collaboration with Dutch EDM star Oliver Heldens, topped the U.K. singles chart in June 2014.

Born on February 14, 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, Hill was no stranger to music when she first auditioned for the then new The Voice UK in 2012. As a teenager, she had sung with the acoustic rock & soul group Shaking Trees, which created some local buzz and received several plays on BBC Radio. On The Voice UK she made it to the semifinal with her powerful renditions of R&B songs by the likes of John Legend and others, before being eliminated.

Following her success with Heldens, Hill worked extensively with London-based dance producer MNEK and issued her debut solo single, "Caution to the Wind." It showcased a shift toward a more electronica-influenced sound, with twinkling melodies and production reminiscent of Four Tet. The Eko EP appeared in 2017, and included the single "Unpredictable." The single "Sunrise in the East" followed a year later. In 2019, Hill issued a pair of upbeat singles, "I Could Get Used to This," which featured Weiss, and "Wish You Well," which featured Sigala.

Listen out for ‘LAST TIME’ 2021 new single.

LOST INTERVIEWS 'LIFE WITHOUT SOCIAL MEDIA' LIKE PLEASE
Created by Fidel Channer

Laura Alexandra explores the heart of London in this mini documentary to find out if people could live without social media, also the positive and negative impact it has on them.

One lady said, "I used to be the woman who worked a room. If invited, I would’ve gone to the opening of an envelope. Social media didn’t exist in my twenties, so you had to occupy physical spaces. A breathing body was proof of life. Emails wouldn’t suffice since we were suspicious of the kind of communication that could disappear into a black hole. There was no did you get my email when someone’s breathing two feet in front of your face.

Back when I was playing with my abacus and learning how to start fires in my cave, I worked in book publishing. Friends used to introduce me as someone who was good to know. The concept of FOMO was non-existent, but I had a severe case of it. I thought the more I was seen, the more I put myself out there, the more people I accumulated in my contact list, something would happen. Although I wasn’t entirely certain what that something was.

I suppose it worked because when I published my first book in 2008, it was everywhere. Blogs covered it. Podcast hosts and website editors interviewed me. My book was featured in USA Today, Vanity Fair, Elle, and Entertainment Weekly. While the world was smaller back then — we didn’t have the tweet swarm, Pavlovian status updates, fingers habituated to doomsday scrolling and swiping— technology would soon make me feel claustrophobic and alone.

Although my book wasn’t a bestseller, it earned out its advance and was well-received. All that hustling, networking, and work paid off — but at what cost? I was the clown living in a hurt circus, unable to strip the mask from my face. I swallowed all the best parts of me so I could make adults sporting ironic eyewear laugh at my expense. Drinking softened the edges until the room fell too quiet and I could forget I was there.

I knew some people laughed at me behind my back. There was a now-disgraced Paris Review editor who sized me up at a book party and walked away. There was the guy who wrote self-absorbed stories in my Columbia workshop who pretended to not know me. When he published a novel about a self-absorbed guy suffering the tortures of the damned, he experienced some minor celebrity. Every time we were introduced, he would act as if it was the first time we’d met. And then there those who issued barbs that weren’t so thinly-veiled.

Still, I’d smile and show up. Still, I’d ride the subway home in tears.

The internet exploded. Everyone was on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Instagram would launch the following year. All the physical spaces morphed into digital ones. We hid behind our shiny devices. Everyone preened for the screen where we became the architects of our personal brands. The new world order dictated if you were nobody if you weren’t online.

While I signed up for all the accounts, I didn’t know how to be on social media when I realized digital masks had replaced physical ones. Nobody wanted your present-tense sadness. They preferred you not to kick up a fuss or make a scene. Your pain was awkward and uncomfortable and no one wanted to bear the weight of it. You were expected to deliver a life in sepia where everything was beautiful and nothing hurt."

CHILL X SPILL 'I GOT A STORY TO TELL'
CHRISTOPHER 'NOTORIOUS BIG' WALLACE DOCUMENTARY
NETFLIX ORIGINAL REVIEW

'Chill and Spill' is a new feature on BRIDGE the GAP where various presenters will break down one of Netflix's popular shows in the top 10.

On this 'CHILL and SPILL pilot, Joel Benjamin talks about Christopher ‘Notorious BIG’ Wallace’s early childhood, the friendship turn feud between himself and Tupac Shakur.

He also gives his perspective on the new 2021 documentary ‘I Got A Story To Tell’ on Biggie’s life.

Listen now only on BRIDGE the GAP’s ‘CHILL & SPILL’.

Perhaps posthumous legacy was always on the mind of late rapper Christopher “Notorious BIG” Wallace. His impactful debut album Ready to Die was followed by Life After Death, released 16 days after he was killed aged 24, in a still-unsolved, drive-by shooting. Yet while there have been several filmic attempts to capture this legascy –– including Nick Broomfield’s 2002 documentary Biggie & Tupac and the 2009 biopic Notorious –– this Netflix release is the first to successfully sidestep the quicksand of murder mystery, and focus instead on what Wallace accomplished in life.

Clearly redressing that balance was the motivation of at least two executive producers, including Wallace’s label boss and friend, Sean “Diddy” Combs, who early on declares: “This story doesn’t have to have a tragic ending.” It’s the contribution of Wallace’s mother, though, that’s particularly significant. Firstly in the form of family photos and stories illustrating a childhood spent between their Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant and her family’s home in Trelawny, Jamaica. There, young Wallace’s favourite uncle exposed him to sound system culture, while back in Brooklyn a jazz musician neighbour played him Max Roach and Clifford Brown. So that by the time a 17-year-old Biggie triumphed in the now-legendary rap battle on Bedford and Quincy, he was already “rhyming in a way that exudes all the finer qualities of a bebop drum solo”.

More subtly though, Ms Wallace’s involvement gives permission for loyal associates to open up about the “gangster” part of “gangster rapper”. The darkest rumours are omitted, but there’s a detailed account of how Biggie came to dominate the local crack cocaine economy. These mid-90s, north-west Brooklyn specificities are fascinating and relevant; to Biggie’s art, certainly, but possibly also to his death.

HAITI BABII TRAP ART
LIVE FROM CALIFORNIA

Joel Benjamin in conversaton with the Californian Haitian freestyle rapping phenomenon who went viral wnen he performed his funk rap style that included different voices and narratives of which he would weave in and out, in addition to ad-libs and falsetto-delivered sound effects. His music caught the attention of Rihanna, Chrissy Teigen and Swae Lee among others.

He touches on topics such as gang culture, his 6 month old child who also makes a brief cameo appearance.

Haiti Babii is a go-getter in every aspect of the word. Aside from his double workouts in one day and playing the father figure to his newborn, the remaining hours are spent in the studio perfecting his craft. With his Instagram name reading “Trap Art,” the Guyanese and Haitian rapper, producer, and songwriter embodies the definition of someone who’s in their own lane, carving their own unique sound and style in today’s generation of music.

When it comes to his work ethic, he sets the bar. He states, “You may have better music than me, you may look better than me, you may be taller than me, but I’ll die before I let you outwork me. That's my mindset.”

You may have seen Haiti’s name from his viral moment freestyle on Real 92.3 (which caught the attention of Chrissy Tiegen), or maybe from his breakout single “Change Ya Life.” Either way, Haiti is proud to put Stockton, California on the map, serving as one of the first known artists to come out of his city. Beyond that, he’s followed by the likes of Rihanna and Meek Mill.

Flaunt caught up with Haiti via FaceTime, who was located in Las Vegas preparing for his lady’s birthday. He jokes, “I’m a ladies man.” Read below as we discuss fatherhood, inspo behind “Red Lights,” moving to Los Angeles, learning how to produce, a day in the life, studio essentials, going Gold, Rihanna and Meek Mill cosigns, his new album Trap Art, and more!

Although he was raised in Stockton, Haiti Babii was born in Oakland and has strong ties to the Bay Area. He got into rap music through his mother, who was into the hyphy sound of his birthplace, and dedicated himself to the artform after he finished high school. He developed a unique mike approach, using his voice not only for rhymes and ad-libs but also for rhythmic elements, sound effects, and secondary vocal interjections, and was eventually able to self-produce and mix tracks on equipment, completely self-taught. In 2018, he made his commercial debut, broke through with the Unseen Asylum collaboration "Change Ya Life," and toward the end of the year issued the nine-track Welcome 2 da 9 with support from Bay Area platform Thizzler on the Roof. The next year, just after Haiti released his second nine-track mixtape, Warrior, his unconventional freestyle on Los Angeles' KRRL (Real 92.3) went viral, and he earned the admiration of Rihanna. Singles such as "King of the North" and "Thug Thizzle" arrived in 2020.

KYRA HIGHER GROUND

HIGHER GROUND
XANADU
Laura Alexandra interviews the phenomenal and talented singer Kyra.
Kyra is an exceptionally talented singer and songwriter from West London. She is known in the capital for her soulful voice, bubbly character and captivating live performances.
Influenced by music greats such as Randy Crawford and inspired by the 80’s vibes of Kraftwerk and the Eurythmics, Kyra’s distinguished voice is blend of heartwarming soul with a modern exciting twist creating a sound of “ElectroSoul”. Since starting out at the age of age of 16, Kyra has rapidly evolved into being one of the UK’s hottest singing sensations. She first showcased her amazing voice in 2006 on the sultry RNB ballad “Tick Tock”, which was soon declared song of the week on Kiss FM and continued to be played on Radio 1Xtra and Capital Xtra.

Fresh from the release of her ethereal single “Cali Dreamin”, emerging songstress Kyra unveils her highly anticipated EP release, ‘Xanadu’ alongside lead single “Higher Ground”.Following other teaser singles such as “Stampede” and “Cause & Cure”, the project is a welcome offering from the unique creative, who will go on to be highlighted on BBCR 1Xtra, featuring in Jamz Supernova’s EP Top 5 later this month. In turn, reflecting the current climate and rooting itself in the angst of a millennial and alien world, the single looks at an exploration of self, whilst searching for meaning as your personal divine calls on. “Over the years I’ve really found my higher power in my strength as a woman. I call it divine feminity,” Kyra states. “Just like the ancient muses, I walk with a tribe - a sisterhood that ground me, but also keep me connected to the universe spiritually. “I do believe there is something special about this song becuase I can barely remember writing it, I was simply a vessel! The studio session with Youngr was so fluid - the song landed with us from a higher power. I think we both knew in the moment that we’d made something magical. I need to credit God because I didn’t write this alone. It was magic.” Continuing, Kyra shares: “There is honestly about four sounds on the record and the vocals are the first takes I ever did. I love how we didn’t follow any rules.”Complete with spoken word and “crazy synths”, the title track features spoken word segments from English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan, Or, A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment”, which describes the serene and idyllic real life province Xanadu.

“I don’t think it was an accident I was introduced to ‘Xanadu’ so early. It was a film way before my time, but somehow really imprinted my world view. “In this current climate, being a woman of colour, raising a Black son with a Black partner, it definitely feels more poignant than ever.”

KOOL & THE GANG HISTORY LESSON WITH ROBERT 'KOOL' BELL
Lara Avetoom interviews the legendary lead member of 'KOOL & THE GANG' Robert 'Kool' Bell.

Formed as a jazz ensemble in the mid-'60s, Kool & the Gang became one of the most inspired and influential funk units during the '70s, and one of the most popular R&B groups of the '80s after their breakout hit "Celebration" in 1979. Just as funky as James Brown or Parliament (and sampled almost as frequently), Kool & the Gang relied on their jazz backgrounds and long friendship to form a tightly knit group with the interplay and improvisation of a jazz outfit, plus the energy and spark of a band with equal ties to soul, R&B, and funk.

Robert "Kool" Bell and his brother Ronald (or Khalis Bayyan) grew up in Jersey City, NJ, and picked up the music bug from their father. A professional boxer, he was also a serious jazz lover and a close friend of Thelonious Monk. With Robert on bass and Ronald picking up an array of horns, the duo formed the Jazziacs in 1964 with several neighborhood friends: trombone player Clifford Adams, guitarists Charles Smith and Woody Sparrow, trumpeter Robert "Spike" Michens, alto saxophonist Dennis Thomas, keyboard player Ricky West, and drummer Funky George Brown (all of whom, except Michens and West, still remained in the group more than 30 years later).
