She decided to launch her own studio, imagining a cozy setup with about 30 students. Fast forward a few months, and Brooke found herself with 40 students and a waitlist that stretched on and on.
Little did she know that this would be the first step in going from public school music teacher, to building what is now a flourishing music studio with 26 instructors and over 300 students in the Chicago area.

Paul Sarafin has over sixty online students. His primary instrument is guitar and he teaches using the Suzuki Method. Paul is also a member of our TMO community and has created a music application called Music Nest. I wanted to invite Paul to an interview because I think teachers need to hear about this amazing tool. It's different from other tools out there that I've seen! In today’s episode I am spotlighting one of our TMO members, Pamela Lord.
Pamela Lord grew up on a dairy farm in Williamstown, Ontario, Canada, and has been teaching music lessons since the age of 12. She studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. While in Boston, Pamela had a broad range of performance experiences including touring in Cyprus and Greece with singer-songwriter Nikolas Metaxas, performing jazz infused music with influences from around the world with Berklee World Strings, performing with Dream Theater at the Boston Opera House, and more.
After graduating from Berklee, Pamela spent time doing freelance recording work for film scores and singer-songwriters. In 2014, Pamela returned to her hometown where she resides today!
In 2020, her studio shifted to fully online lessons to survive through lengthy lockdowns. Now in 2022, Pamela teaches violin and piano lessons entirely online by choice, in addition to her new job - being a mother to a mischievous one year old!
In today’s discussion, Pamela and I talk about practical and helpful ways to arrange teaching online from home while also parenting young children. It’s so fun hearing how she is making this happen and really enjoying the journey along the way. We both agree that with time management and scheduling, parents can work while raising children and enjoy both roles!

What a thrill it was for me to get to interview Melanie Shore! She is such a fun person and has had incredible experiences as a professional jazz musician, performer, and composer. Without a strong studio foundation, a studio cannot have lasting retention or growth. Most teachers undercharge for private music lessons. Most teachers think that you have to charge what teachers in the area charge or a rate that is competitive to guarantee students. As an online teacher you can set the rules. You are now an in-demand world-wide teacher and because of this you can charge a premium rate! You work for yourself right? Why not charge what you’re worth! Trying to figure out that dollar amount to raise your rates or when to do so is challenging. There is no black and white answer. Teaching online can be absolutely exhaustion! Luckily, there are some simple ways to make it more fun, meaningful, and stress free for you. Here are the 10 tips referred to in this episode: Get a comfortable chair - forget the bench! Schedule regular breaks OR don’t schedule more than 4 students in a row Stretch during the lesson and stand up Close your eyes and listen to the student play Turn your computer to night setting to help with eye strain Talk less and ask more questions Introduce a sight reading activity in the middle of the lesson Get your materials ready at the beginning of the day vs. when the lesson begins Use YouTube videos to reinforce what you’re teaching Don’t be a perfectionist, focus on progression and growth

He knows his stuff and has some amazing tips for helping teachers double their rates and manage their studios like a pro. Key Takeaway - In general most music teachers don't charge nearly enough.
