Bio:
Dr. Leah Stein Duker is an occupational therapist and Assistant Professor in the Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Southern California. She runs the Tailored Environmental Modifications Lab utilizes a variety of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method research methodologies and highly interdisciplinary team science, bringing together collaborators from a diverse array of fields such as occupational therapy, dentistry, primary care, oncology, and engineering. Her work in dentistry has focused on autistic children, children with Down syndrome, children with dental fear and anxiety, and their families. Outside of dentistry, her work has included studies in oncology, emergency medicine, and primary care settings.

Hear Dr. Scott Papineau talk about trends in different areas of the country that impact the need for oral conscious sedation, as well as different commonly used sedation combinations- some states have dictated no polypharmacy for pediatric dentists-basically limits to midazolam (short duration). Learn of Dr. Papineau’s favorite drug combinations, and why some practices do not feel comfortable with oral sedation—mainly, lack of comfortability with medications, not properly educated on handling emergencies that can accompany use of oral sedation, or staff not properly trained.
Bio:
Dr. Papineau moved to Indianapolis to attend Butler University where he earned his doctorate ofpharmacy degree (PharmD). He worked as a licensed pharmacist for two years before starting dental school at Indiana University School of Dentistry. After graduation from dental school, Dr. Papineau completed his pediatric dental residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He currently lives in Indianapolis where he has owned and run a successful private practice for the last decade. Because of his unique dual pharmacy and dentistry degrees, Dr. Papineau enjoys giving the pharmacology lecture series to different pediatric dental residency programs. In addition, he was honored to be chosen as one of the faculty for the AAPD sedation course. Dr. Papineau enjoys helping dentists feel more comfortable with the topic of pharmacy as it relates to dentistry.

Bio:
Dr. Michael Webb grew up in the Chicago area and attended DePaul University before obtaining his DDS from Northwestern University. He then completed a certificate in pediatric dentistry at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a certificate in dental anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. In addition to his clinical training Dr. Webb has a certificate in Health Care Administration, a Master’s in Education with a concentration in Adult Learning and recently competed a Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education at East Carolina University.
He previously taught at Baylor College of Dentistry where he was the Graduate Program Director and the Chief of Dental Services at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. He then was the Graduate Program Director in Pediatric Dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University before opening a private practice that focused on office sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Webb returned to academics in 2014 to become the Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Webb was named Chair, Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at ECU in January 2018. In July 2022, Dr. Webb was named the inaugural Jasper L. Lewis, Jr. Distinguished Scholar in Pediatric Dentistry at the ECU School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Webb is currently an advanced life support emergency medical technician/attendant in charge with Forest View Volunteer Rescue/Chesterfield Fire and EMS which is part of an urban 911 EMS system. He holds EMT certifications in Virginia and North Carolina and has served as a field training officer for both patient care and emergency driving.

Margherita Fontana (DDS, PhD) is the Clifford Nelson Endowed Professor of Dentistry in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics at University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She is Director of the Global Initiatives Program in Oral and Craniofacial Health at the School of Dentistry. She is currently co-director of Cariology courses, and cariology discipline co-coordinator at UM. As a principal investigator, she has received research grants from NIH, CMS, foundations and industry. She was the 2007-2008 President of the Cariology Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the 2010-2011 Chair of the Cariology Section of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and the 2016-2020 President of the American Academy of Cariology. She is currently the 2021-2023 Vice-President of the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA),and has been Co-Chair of the Alliance for Cavity Free Future (ACFF) Canada-US Chapter since 2015.

By day, he was a practicing pediatric dentist for over 41 years. Jed is Board certified and is on the faculty at Case Western Reserve, Columbia University, and the University of Alabama, Birmingham. His primary academic interest is light curing and restorative materials in pediatric dentistry. He has always had a keen interest in technology, glass ionomers, and resin-modified glass ionomers, in particular.
However, Dr. Best is a passionate photographer 24/7. While we was always interested in photography, the introduction of digital catapulted his passion, becoming an obsession. It is as if he has an internal need to photograph, and now always carries a camera. As a self-described techno-geek, digital allowed both his right and left brains to work together which allowed him to express himself. Jed’s vision was now only confined by his heart, head, and eyes. Digital photography allowed him to unleash his imagination of the world no longer bound by the limitations of a commercial lab.
Photography has allowed Jed to share his vision by self-publishing several books. He has traveled to Africa, Cuba, and, uniquely, to both poles. The book that displayed those images is called “My Bipolar Experience.”
With pandemic creating focus on the long-term problem gaining access to hospital ORs to treat our most vulnerable patients under general anesthesia, the AAPD, Julie and her team helped identify the specific coding challenges and reimbursement limits that are at the heart of this problem, primarily affecting children covered by Medicaid. Starting this year, Julie serves as the Government Affairs representative for the Academy, advocating for our membership’s interests in Washington DC. This year, Julie was named as one of Capitol Hill’s top lobbyists (thehill.com), recognized for leveraging her expertise and connections to make a difference in the nation’s capital. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, and a Past President of the American Association of Dental Research. He has Chaired the Counsel of Scientific Affairs for the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has published over 200 peer reviewed scientific manuscripts, edited two textbooks and authored 24 text chapters. For most of healthcare training, our clinical learning experiences take place in clinic and/or hospital settings. Yet, at the same time, evidence shows that most of health improvement is a result of behaviors that occur at home, by the patient. Without a greater understanding of the challenges faced in achieving health improvement through patients’ at home behavioral changes, we cannot achieve the desired goal our expert counseling in maximizing outcomes. Dr. Weed is a totally blind and very brittle type I diabetic three-time Yale graduate, including his Ph.D. in Genetics earned in 2004. He also has master’s degrees earned at Princeton and Harvard. During his dissertation work he was an informal adviser on international policy on embryonic stem cell and human cloning research to the Acting Director of the National Institutes of Health.
After six years of post-doctoral work in bio ethics and medical education at Yale Dr. Weed became the Interim Associate Director of The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s $150 million Wisconsin Institute for Discovery which he helped launch in 2010-2012.
Matthew co-created one of the first methods for making electronic text available to the blind in 1990. He has worked with, and mentored, hundreds of student volunteer caregivers, many of whom are now in careers in healthcare and health policy. He is working with people at a variety of institutions to find cost-effective ways to lower the barriers to millions of elderly and disabled Americans’ ability to live independently and productively.
Matthew skis, kayaks, has completed a rollerblading marathon, and has traveled around the world—twice.
Among his other projects, Dr. Weed is an accessibility consultant for colleges and corporations. He completed a contract on web accessibility with the National Institutes of Health in 2021. He is also co-developing tools and techniques to help people who aren’t comfortable with technology learn how to use smart devices so they can become full participants in our information driven society.

Amr M. Moursi, D.D.S., Ph.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the New York University College of Dentistry and on the Medical Staff at the New York University Langone Medical Center and the Bellevue Hospital Center in New York.
Dr. Moursi completed his D.D.S. degree at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, a pediatric dentistry residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and then a Ph.D. in Craniofacial Biology from the University of California at San Francisco. He is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Moursi is also recipient of the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Distinguished Alumni Award.
For the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), Dr. Moursi currently serves on the Executive Committee as the President-Elect, as a Fellow of the Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center, Liaison to the American Academy of Pediatrics, Director of the Comprehensive Review Course, and also as a National Spokesperson. He has received the Merle S. Hunter Leadership Award, and has been selected for both the AAPD Leadership, and the Advanced Leadership Institutes.
He has previously served the AAPD as Academic Trustee-at-large on the Board of Trustees, Regional Consultant on the Medicaid and CHIP Advisory Committee, Chair of the Global Interactions Task Force, Member of the Nominations Committee and President of the Ohio Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
In his other service activities Dr. Moursi serves as an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and as a consultant to both the New York State and New York City Departments of Health. He is a former member of the Examination Committee of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He also served as a Consultant and Pediatric Dentistry Review Committee member for the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dr. Moursi has also served as an expert witness for the New York and New Jersey Attorney Generals’ offices and for the Office of the inspector General of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Moursi’s research focuses on early childhood oral health and the integration of oral health in primary care. He has served as Principal Investigator on a number of federally-funded projects including grants from CMMI, HRSA and NIH. Including, a current NIH-funded multi-center clinical trial evaluating caries arrest using Silver Diamine Fluoride in pre-school children. He is the author or co-author of over 100 published articles, book chapters and policy briefs. Including serving as a contributor to the 2021 NIDCR Report Oral Health in America. He is also Editor of the textbook Clinical Cases in Pediatric Dentistry (2nd Edition, Wiley). Dr. Moursi has been an invited speaker at numerous state, national and international conferences and universities with presentations on variety of topics including Behavior Guidance, Early Childhood Oral Health, and Oral Health for Patients with Special Needs.
Dr. Moursi is Host of the Dental Health Show on Doctor Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and he and his department have been featured on NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, CNN Headline News, Inside Edition, and on local New York City television and radio news programs, as well as several New York City newspapers.
In addition, Dr. Moursi has led teams of NYU faculty and students to provide pediatric dental training, education and care to underserved areas around the world including Tanzania,
Nicaragua, Alaska, northern Maine and upstate New York. He also maintains a private practice in New York City.

Dr. Carter grew up in Short Hills NJ and graduated from Millburn High School where she was on the tennis, fencing and lacrosse teams. She earned her BS in Molecular Biology from Haverford College, on the mainline of Philadelphia. Here, she was captain of the fencing team, Rookie of the Year and qualified individually for the NCAA tournament. She returned to New Jersey for Dental School at UMDNJ-NJDS (now Rutgers School of Dental Medicine) and was honored with earning the American Academy of Dentistry for Children Award, the Pierre Fauchard Award and others. Following graduation, she moved to New York City where she completed her Pediatric Dentistry Residency and served as Chief Resident at NYU College of Dentistry. She continued her training by completing an additional residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at NYU. During this time, she loved treating patients with special needs and decided to spend another year in advanced training. She completed the fellowship in Cleft, Craniofacial and Surgical Orthodontics at the world-renowned Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery- NYU Langone Medical Center. After 9 years of training post college, she is one of a handful of doctors with this comprehensive advanced training in the country.
Following training, she taught at NYU, worked with her father, Dr. Robert W. Carter an orthodontist in Staten Island, NY and with Dr. Mitchell Bayroff in Summit, NJ for over a decade. She lectures locally and internationally on treating special needs patients, especially autism spectrum disorder and Cleft Lip and Palate. She recently spoke at the American Association of Dentistry’s Special Patient Care Symposium. She is frequently a guest on Sirius Radio Channel 110 “Doctor Radio” and has appeared on Inside Edition, WPIX, NBC Nightly News and Today.com. She is Past President of the Northeastern Society of Orthodontists (NESO), the third largest region in the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). She is one of 8 people to serve on the AAO Council on Orthodontic Health Care. This group helps bring orthodontic care to children who need and can not afford braces. She also serves as the NESO’s Delegate Chair to the AAO House of Delegates, which is similar to our US Congress.
In her spare time, she loves playing with her toy poodle, Callie who is a certified therapy dog and AKC Canine Good Citizen. They volunteer through Morristown based Creature Comfort Pet Therapy to brighten lives. Callie is joining our office team on some days, too! Dr. Carter is an avid golfer and Bar Method enthusiast.

Gustavo Oliveira is an associate professor of operative dentistry and biomaterials in the Division of Comprehensive Oral Health, and the graduate program director of the advanced education in operative dentistry and biomaterials at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. Rhea M. Haugseth, DMD maintained a private practice in Marietta, GA from 1982- 2017. She attended the University of Louisville Dental School and completed her pediatric residency at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital / Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Academy of Dentistry International.
Dr. Haugseth is a Past President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Georgia Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Haugseth has been a National Spokesperson for the AAPD since 1989.
Dr. Haugseth is a Fellow and member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and an active member of the National DMORT Mass Disaster Team serving Region IV as a forensic dentist (odontologist).
Dr. Haugseth is the Founder and Director of the Atlanta Pediatric Dental Assistant School in Atlanta Georgia. She is also the Founder and Director of the Pediatric Dental Team Association. She is committed to pediatric dental team members and continues to develop ways to enhance their knowledge and skills both in and out of the dental office.

Dr. Jacob Lee earned his DDS from the University of Toronto. He completed his dental internship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, earned his diploma in pediatric dentistry at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry, and was conferred fellowship by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
Dr. Lee was an associate professor at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and was later the director of the graduate program in pediatric dentistry at the University of Minnesota. He also served as chairperson of pediatric dentistry at the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, the director of the USC pediatric dental residency program, and as the dental director of the Children's Dental Health Clinic at Miller Children’s Hospital, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
Dr. Lee is a graduate of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Leadership Institute and has served the AAPD on numerous committees, including as the chair of the Graduate Students Research Awards and as coordinator of the academicians meeting at the AAPD Annual Sessions. In addition, he has organized and moderated the AAPD Practice Management Program. Dr. Lee has also served as the president of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry, as a trustee of the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and as the AAPD Western District trustee. He is a fellow of the AAPD and of the American College of Dentists.
Dr. Lee is presently clinical associate professor at USC School of Dentistry, directing the dental materials seminars for first-year pediatric dental residents. Incorporating his dental research and clinical experience, Dr. Lee has presented at numerous state, national, and international meetings. As a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry he recently completed afive-year commitment serving as a member of the ABPD Qualifying Examination Committee and as an examiner for the Oral Clinical Examination. He is a speaker in the AAPD Speakers Bureau, an AAPD Media spokesperson, and a member of the editorial board of Pediatric Dentistry. Currently he is serving as the co-chair of the Local Arrangements Committee of the AAPD Annual Sessions 2022, to be held in San Diego.
Dr. Lee is engaged in private practice with his son, a pediatric dentist, and with his daughter, a dental hygienist, in San Clemente and Rancho Mission Viejo, California. He is an accomplished classical violinist and enjoys performing with his children.

This provided the foundation of her work in children’s oral health disparities and successful achievement of promotion and tenure in 2008. In 2009, she became the Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at VCU
After a competitive submission process, the VCU Provost’s Office, she was named Director of VCU’s iCubed Transdisciplinary Oral Health Core. This core seeks to identify and remove the educational, political, psychological, social, and nutritional barriers to good oral health.
Her leadership roles have spanned multiple organizations such as President of the Virginia Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, then chairing the AAPD Council on Scientific Affairs, and serving on the AAPD Board of Trustees from 2017-2020. She currently serves on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry’s Qualifying Exam Committee and as an OCE examiner. She also serves on the dental advisory committee to Virginia state dental Medicaid program.
In 2010, she help to initiate and build a statewide non-profit called the Virginia Oral Health Coalition. She served as the founding chair of its board until 2016. It has grown into a national recognized organization known as Virginia Health Catalyst where she currently serves as a board member and part of the Water Equity Task Force.

In 2009, after nine years of providing care in a private practice setting, Dr. Brownstein returned to the University of California at Los Angeles to further his training in the area of anesthesiology. After completing a year of medical anesthesia training at Harbor-UCLA, a major trauma center in Southwest Los Angeles, he was appointed to the position of chief resident in the Department of Dental Anesthesiology at the School of Dentistry at UCLA where he eventually attained his certificate in Dental Anesthesiology.
Dr. Brownstein is board certified and a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and National Board of Dental Anesthesiology. He is an oral board examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is a clinical oral conscious sedation and general anesthesia permit examiner for the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners. Dr. Brownstein was appointed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry to a position on the AAPD Council on Clinical Affairs. He is a member of the Dental Patient Safety Foundation, a Surveyor for the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities, and a member of the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners’ Anesthesia & Sedation Committee.
As a full-time clinician in private practice, Dr. Brownstein’s primary emphasis is in the area of pharmacologic management of special needs children and adults, while providing care in office, hospital, and surgical center settings. He is a Clinical Faculty Member at the Midwestern College of Dental Medicine and in the Department of Anesthesia/Dental Medicine at NYU-Langone Hospital. He helps to instruct oral and intravenous moderate sedation courses, provides medical emergency seminars, and is a certified Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support & Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor.
Dr. Brownstein has authored and coauthored an array of published journal articles and textbook chapters on topics including craniofacial disorders, pediatric physiology and office-based general anesthesia. He also provides peer review for articles within the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists journal publication, Anesthesia Progress. He is actively involved in several ongoing clinical research at Midwestern College of Dental Medicine including projects focused specifically on improving the quality of pediatric sedation and general anesthesia.

Dr. Brownstein was a past Bank Director on the Board of West Valley National Bank/Arizona Dental Bank, a community bank specifically dedicated to financing private medical and dental ventures throughout the state of Arizona. As an active member of the Arizona Special Olympics, Autism Speaks, Council for Exceptional Children, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Federation for Children with Special Needs, Dr. Brownstein dedicates much of his free time advocating for the nearly 5 million school-aged special needs children living throughout the United States.
Dr. Brownstein is a second-generation pediatric dentist, and has spent a majority of his life, in one way or another, involved in the field of medicine & dentistry while working with special needs patients. For over thirty-years his father, Dr. Marshall Brownstein, served as Dean of Admissions & Student Affairs at both the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry and University of Nevada at Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine and is regarded nationally for his dedication to dental academics. While his mother, Dr. Marjorie Brownstein, obtained her doctorate in Special Education and focused her career on the education for this underserved population.
On a personal note, Dr. Brownstein’s wife, Dr. Sheri Brownstein, also a second-generation dentist, is an Associate Professor & Director of Preclinical Faculty at Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine in Glendale, Arizona. Sheri & Jeff have three wonderful children, Emma, Rogan and Landon and enjoy an active lifestyle, which includes photography, hiking, running, basketball, and traveling.

Numerous pulp revascularization/regeneration case reports have shown successful clinical and radiographic outcomes which include continued root development, thickening of the dental walls and return of pulp vitality. All indicating that it is possible to regeneration a pulp following a traumatic injury where the neurovascular bundle is severed in young children. Upon clinical and radiographic exam the regenerate cell seems to act like the pulp. But absent exact signaling mechanism by which the stems cells can use to proliferate ones would assume functional pulp-like tissues are regenerated with the characterization of vascularization and innervation.
