It’s common when you’re living with a chronic (long term) thyroid condition to not feel ok all the time. I’m here to encourage you, however, that you WILL be ok. I know because I’m ok and if I can be ok, so can you! Being ‘ok’ is not being ‘perfect’ which I don’t believe is attainable, but it is about feeling like there is hope, feeling like there are things you can do which will have a positive impact on your life.

The things I cover in this episode include:

  • The ebbs and flows of living long term with a thyroid condition
  • My almost 30 years of ups and downs
  • Situations that lead to not feeling ok
  • Warning signs you might be spiralling down
  • What to focus on to start spiralling up rather than keep spiralling down
  • My last 12 months as an example
  • The power of accountability
  • Life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21)
  • Remember to KISS when it feels complicated
  • Control what YOU CAN control - 4 key areas
  • Getting more bang for your buck by dealing with the low-hanging fruit
  • Resources I have to support you
  • Speaking a blessing over you
  • What’s your ONE next step?

This is a first for the Let's Talk Thyroid podcast. The first time I've had an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) Surgeon on the show. Dr Dana Gibbs is an ENT and an allergist and is a wealth of knowledge on thyroid and hormone health. Like many of my guests, it was when she couldn't get answers to her own health challenges that she took her health into her own hands and started digging deeper, into the thyroid and beyond!

This is a fascinating conversation.

Some of what we cover includes:

  • Dr Gibbs thyroid story
  • Sinus/thyroid connection
  • Thyroid medication - personalised dosing, types of medications and when/how to take meds
  • The significance of T3
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroidectomy and thyroid management after thyroidectomy (full or partial)
  • Interconnectedness of thyroid hormones and other hormones
  • Supplementing with estrogen
  • Thyroid & menopause overlap
  • Dr Gibbs 4 rules for thyroid health management.

Dr. Dana Gibbs is an educator, Hormone expert, board-certified ENT, and allergist. Dr. Gibbs attended medical school in San Antonio Texas and trained in Otolaryngology at the University of Kansas. She practiced otolaryngology in Arlington TX, USA for 23 years.

Her experience of ill health during her teen years all the way to her late 30's led to profound changes in the way she practices medicine. After spending those years unrecognized, dismissed, and told "it was all in her head", she found mentors in the Integrative Medicine world that helped her find the answers and solutions to her problems. These answers now inform her practice and educational efforts.

She recently opened Consultants in Metabolism, a direct care practice for thyroid, metabolic and hormone management for Women and Men. The practice offers live and virtual visits.

Dr.Gibbs also speaks in person and online, presenting workshops that introduce physicians and patients to the unique solutions of an integrative Hormone practice.

Hopefully after listening to this conversation, you have some fresh inspiration to tweak your own unique thyroid-friendly lifestyle!

Some of what we cover includes:

  • Lifestyle oriented actions and habits that fuel a healthy thyroid
  • What Angela's day to day lifestyle looks like from wake up to sleep time!
  • What foods fuel a healthy thyroid lifestyle
  • What types of exercise fuel a healthy thyroid lifestyle
  • The importance of having a plan
  • Developing an exercise program/routine
  • The value of accountability

What is ONE THING you can take away from this episode?

Angela is a holistic health coach from St. Louis, MO. She is a board certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), a licensed physical therapist, as well as a personal trainer. We have been on a stress/gut/healing journey over the last few episodes and I love how this often happens - the conversations follow similar themes from different angles, perspectives and stories which helps to really unpack the topic.

To continue the theme, Libby Munro joins me to share her story of healing her Hashimoto's and unpack further the connection between how you handle stress, manage gut health and heal autoimmune thyroid conditions. Libby brings energy and education to the thyroid community and in particular is a popular thyroid advocate in the Australian Thyroid Community.

We cover:

  • Libby's Hashimoto's Story
  • Taking a holistic approach to healing
  • The role of stress
  • How hypnotherapy can help Hashimoto's
  • Finding personalised stress management techniques
  • Daily pro-biotic use and the research on
  • SIBO
  • Specific supplements for various gut issues
  • Heart Rate Variability monitoring for stress management

Meet Libby:
Libby grew up on a cattle station in outback Queensland, and originally followed her passion for acting, graduating from NIDA in 2008. She then enjoyed a thriving creative career on stage and screen, fulfilling her wildest performance dreams, but it took an incredible toll on her physical health.

It was during her time at NIDA that Libby’s health was first impacted by constant dieting, stress, and maintaining the maniacally busy schedule of a theatre artist. She was diagnosed with the autoimmune condition 'Hashimotos' at only 25 years old, and so began her parallel interest in health, lifestyle and nutrition. Libby took her health into her own hands, studied her autoimmune disease, and then implemented diet and lifestyle changes - effectively putting her disease into remission.

While working on a film in Los Angeles in 2017, Libby hired a nutrition coach from American company Black Iron Nutrition while training for a very physically demanding role. It was her experience with a wonderful coach at BIN that made her look into a career in health and start studying under Precision Nutrition. Returning to Australia when Covid-19 struck, Libby completed her study and applied for an internship with Black Iron Nutrition and was subsequently hired as one of their elite coaches.

While she loved her 2 years as a nutrition coach, Libby found that she wanted to help people with very serious conditions like her own and has found her niche in improving her client's gut health, working to put autoimmunity into remission for a broader audience and supporting long term health in these areas.

She continues her passion for acting, most recently starring in Queensland Theatre Co’s 2023 season of “The Appleton Ladies Potato Race”, and appearing in the Netflix series 'Joe Vs Carol’. Libby also makes handmade fur felt hats with her brand 'Bluegrass Hat Co' because she believes that a happy and balanced existence (for her) involves creativity aligned with physical and mental health.

"Can you heal Hashimoto's?" is a common question I've been asked over the years, and have asked myself. My guest on this episode, Josie Warren strongly believes you can heal Hashimoto's (& other autoimmune diseases) by addressing how you emotionally respond to life. It's a fascinating and challenging conversation and one full of HOPE.

We cover:

  • Josie's Hashimoto's story and her path to healing.
  • Is Hashimoto's a 'thyroid' disease?
  • The emotional connection to autoimmune diseases.
  • The immune system as a root cause.
  • The parasympathetic v sympathetic nervous system.
  • Learning how to emotionally handle life so you can heal.
  • The importance of having hope in the healing journey.

What is ONE THING you can take away from this episode?

Josie is an expert in the psychology of illness. She had eight autoimmune diseases, depression, anxiety, ADD, alcoholism, and an eating disorder in her teens and 20’s. After years of struggling with traditional and alternative medicine, she was unable to solve any of her chronic health issues.

Thankfully, through learning how to deal with her emotional state, she was able to permanently resolve all of her chronic health issues and autoimmune diseases in a very short period of time.

Nine years fully healthy, Josie is passionate about helping others with autoimmune diseases and chronic health disorders fully heal by helping people resolve their emotional state.

On today’s podcast, she is excited to share about the psychology of illness with the Let’s Talk Thyroid audience.

The topic of gut health comes up often on this show. It's important to revisit it because for everyone with an autoimmune thyroid condition, there will be be leaky gut and other gut issues to be dealt with.

  • How to test for leaky gut and other gut issues.

  • The impact of antibiotics on the gut.

  • Parasites - what they are, how to know if you have one and should everyone do a parasite cleanse?

  • Ways to take your thyroid meds that bypass the digestive system, where appropriate.

At the end of the year I like to do a bit of a podcast wrap up for the year! We've covered a lot of thyroid-friendly content, so be sure to scroll back through the podcast shownotes!

To set yourself up well for 2024, consider exploring these ideas in relation to your health (the workbook is more holistic across your whole life) - which is what I go over on the podcast - and form the basis of my workbook Design Your Year

Reflect

  • What happened in 2023 in your health?
  • Did you have a word for your year/your health? How did that play out?
  • What did you learn in relation to your health this year?

Dream

  • No restraint - what would be the dreams for your health for next year?

Create

  • Choosing the top 1-3 of your health dreams that can be worked on in 2024, created specific goals for them.

Plan

  • For each of those goals - break them down into the first 3 action steps.

Live

  • Start acting on your goals! Review, change, add, discard as the year progresses.

There are a variety of digestive issues associated with thyroid health including (but I'm afraid, not limited to) leaky gut, constipation, reflux, bloating, malabsorption, strong coeliac connection, irritable bowel syndrome and SIBO. SIBO certainly isn't limited to those with thyroid conditions, so share this episode with anyone you know with SIBO as it will benefit them regardless of their thyroid health.

Today's podcast discussion is a deep dive into SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth). To help me do this, I'm joined by The SIBO Coach, Jen Yundt Coles. We cover:

  • Jen's personal experience with SIBO
  • What is SIBO?
  • How is it different from other gut problems?
  • What symptoms should people be aware of?
  • How do you test for SIBO?
  • How to you treat or manage SIBO? Traditional approach, diet, essential oils & herbs.
  • Foods to avoid when managing SIBO.
  • The importance of stress management for digestion.
  • Is SIBO something that’s ongoing or can you ‘get rid of it’?

If you think you might have SIBO, do get tested, it is a tricky digestive beast to deal with!

Jen Yundt Coles is an AFMC Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and Certified Acupressure Practitioner. She loves inspiring and guiding her clients to optimal health and wellness through promoting positive food & lifestyle changes. Jen was on her own healing journey for over a decade -- first finding out she was gluten-intolerant, struggling with debilitating abdominal pain and fibromyalgia, as well as overcoming SIBO, Candida and chronic stress. Jen loves to support those feeling stuck in a revolving door of infection.

She is a mother of two active & creative teenagers. She is currently based in Sacremento & enjoys practicing Tai Chi and playing guitar for a her sanity. She is a writer, home renovator and on a personal and professional mission to live a life with more energy, clarity and a real joy.

There are many thyroid ‘hot topics’ once you start digging into thyroid health information. Which guru do you follow? What action do you take? How do you apply what you learn to your own unique health situation.

I’ve been storing up a few of these hot topics for my guest Marek Doyle because I know he’s all over the nuance. He understands the grey between the black and white. He’s data driven and detail oriented. He’s also incredibily generous with his time – this being the longest interview I’ve done and whilst I don’t want to get into a habit of going over the hour, this was worth it!

So, in this conversation we (meaning Marek!) tackle:

  • Thyroid Antibodies Don’t Matter (common medical perspective) and they don’t cause destruction to the thyroid gland.
  • Keto is great for thyroid health v keto is terrible for thyoid health.
  • Low carb is great for thyroid health v you need carbs for production of T3 therefore low carb is bad.
  • Fasting is a must for all health conditions (including not being a problem for thyroid patients) v fasting is too stressful and shouldn’t be used by thyroid patients.
  • Ozempic/semaglutitde is the new wonder drug for weight loss v Ozempic is next ‘I told you so’ in 5 years time.

There are many other thyroid hot topics, but I’ll save them for another podcast! If you have any thyroid hot topics you’d like to find the nuance in, please let me know for a future episode!.

Marek is a functional nutritional therapist who has spent the last 18 years building a model of personalized nutrition, based on the data of over 3,000 individual outcomes, 11,000 test results and extensive use of the scientific literature. Based in London, he offers one-to-one consultations for clients as well as training for practitioners.

He holds an MSc in Personalised Nutrition (CNELM/Middlesex Uni), as well as a CertHE in Nutritional Medicine (UWL), a Diploma in Allergy and Environmental Therapy (BIAET) and a Diploma in Advanced Nutrition for Optimal Health (GB Fitness/BCMA).

Let me introduce you to Victoria who is boldly sharing her thyroid story with you on this podcast episode.

Victoria isn't 40 yet and was suffering from debilitating swollen feet & ankles, to the point she often couldn't wear shoes. The doctors couldn't figure out why so basically ignored it until an accident sent her to hospital and the ER doctor ran some tests. She was found to be hypothyroid, put on medication and told nothing other than, take a pill every day now for life.

Fast forward a couple of years and she ends up in hospital again with a burst appendix and decided it was time to take her health into her own hands.

That was only in January this year and now the swelling in her feet & ankles is gone, her back surgery (for pain/sciatica) is cancelled, she's lost weight and is on the road to healing.

What's her secret? Well you have to listen to the episode to hear it all, but it involves being proactive, making some diet & lifestyle changes & getting a thyroid support team (which included my KISS Thyroid Coaching Program so you'll want to check that out too!)

Enjoy being encouraged by Victoria's story.

For many of us with thyroid conditions, pain is a constant. Like with most aspects of thyroid health 'it's complicated' and there is never 1 simple solution. HOWEVER, this doesn't mean there aren't solutions and options to try!

In this podcast I talk with Allison Samon, Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner all about PAIN. She has gone from being in so much pain she needed carrying up the stairs to having resolved her chronic pain. Listen to learn how she did it and some practical steps you could consider if pain is something you deal with regularly.

The key areas we cover in this episode are:

  • Allie's personal story of recovery from severe chronic pain
  • The impact of diet on pain
  • Allie's 5 pillars to recovery:
    1. Gut healing
    2. Blood sugar regulation
    3. Sleep
    4. Elimination (ie poo!)
    5. Low Tox Living
  • Exercising with pain
  • Nutrition and supplements to move out of pain
  • It's never just 1 thing (sound familiar?!)

Allison Samon is a Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner who works virtually with people to get out of chronic illness, escape from mystery symptoms, and help re-design their lifestyle so they can be fit, energized, and pain free in ways that are easy, fun, and sustainable. Allison struggled with unexplained chronic pain for over 10 years. Her remarkable healing journey became the basis for her programs: Reboot from Chronic Illness and the Chronic Illness Recovery Blueprint. She’s also written an ebook “Detoxing Endocrine Disruptors: Essential Checklist” and is a featured author in the Amazon International Best Seller: Teach Your Expertise. But her proudest accomplishment is becoming a first time Mom, naturally, over 40, and inspiring other women to successfully have healthy pregnancies despite being considered “geriatric”.

I talk a lot on this podcast about different diet and lifestyle interventions that may help you live well with your thyroid condition. But how do you know which (if any) have any scientific validation?

In this episode I'm talking with Ellen Steinke about what science she's discovered across various aspects of a thyroid lifestyle and also how the average thyroid patient can know where and how to look for the science behind various thyroid diet & lifestyle interventions.

The key areas we cover in this episode are:

  • Ellen's personal thyroid story
  • What science is there/isn't there behind dietary changes popular in thyroid health eg gluten free, paleo, AIP.
  • What science is there/isn't there behind nutritional deficiencies.
  • What science is there/isn't there behind whether or not to supplement with iodine when you have Hashimoto's.
  • Castor oil packs and other more natural remedies - how to consider those.
  • How to weigh the 'evidence' particularly in areas where there isn't the money for a whole lot of rigorous research.
  • Tips for doing your own investigation into the science (or not) behind whatever diet/lifestyle intervention you'd like to investigate.

Ellen Steinke by a pre-med biology graduate and certified nutrition coach. Diagnosed with Hashimoto's herself, she distills complex information into understandable, actionable advice. She also leverages her personal journey and professional expertise to empower you with the knowledge and tools needed to take back control of your health.

With all the talk on my podcast about living a thyroid-friendly lifestyle, you might wonder, what does that actually look like on a day to day basis. Let me let you take a look into a 'typical' day in my life. Not that my life is perfect or all that interesting but sometimes it's helpful just to see what someone else does to live in a certain way.

Hopefully there might be one thing from what I do that is something you can take an try in your life. What works for me might not work for you or may be applied slightly differently.

If you've been listening for long enough, you'll have heard me say that whilst there are some common areas we all need to explore in our our journies, you will need to find your own unique lifestyle. I wish there was a formula or protocol for a happy thyroid but there just isn't.

This is simply what I'm doing at the moment, and this can and will change over time as I adapt to changes in my health or life!

The key areas I cover in this episode are:
My morning routine - exercise, breakfast, supplements etc.
My work day.
My dinner and evening routines - including food, sleep, supplements and movement.

The conversation also extends to the importance of liver health in relation to gallbladder problems, illuminating the interconnectedness of these crucial body parts.

We also delve into the topic of hormonal changes during pregnancy and postpartum and their potential impact on gallbladder health. In addition to all this insightful information, Olivia leaves us with her top tips on supporting gallbladder health. • How should that be distributed? (Hint first meal of the day is most important to get a good serve -30-50g of protein)
  • Is snacking ok?
  • Typical protein rich breakfasts?
  • Rethinking breakfast.
  • How to get extra protein if you're struggling
  • The importance of tracking protein intake for a week or 2.

I'd love to introduce you to Lyn as she share's her thyroid story to help spread awareness of thyroid health issues during Thyroid Awareness Month.

Lyn was diagnosed with Hashimoto's at 50 after increasingly debilitating symptoms during perimenopause which ultimately saw her in hospital for 5 days being told her problems were all in her head. They weren't. She had Hashimoto's.

As a self-confessed high-achiever, Lyn put her self motivation to work and started reading everything she could get her hands on and taking her health in her own hands. This started with taking 6 months off her high powered corporate job and before returning to work part time for another 6 months.

The first 18 months for Lyn were the hardest as she gradually started to implement changes she was learning about in her research and working with her thyroid support team (function medicine practitioner and naturopath).

12 years on and Lyn has experienced a dramatic shift in how she feels. She is healthy, vibrant and a testament to what living a thyroid-friendly lifestyle can do for you! Thank you Lyn for sharing your story with us.

In this podcast, I talk with Sila Gatti, founder of Not Coffee about her thyroid story. Sila was diagnosed with Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) about 4 years ago. She went on medication but after a few years she started looking into other things she could do to support her thyroid health.

As a result of working with a Chinese medicine practitioner, she changed her diet, exercise and gave up her very precious coffee addiction! Sila missed her coffee so much that she and her husband spent month developing a caffeine and stimulant free coffee alternative, called Not Coffee.

We cover the following topics in our conversation:

  • The background to Sila's Graves diagnosis.
  • Symptoms she experienced like racing heart, extreme fatigue
  • Her history of over exercising and taking preworkout stimulants.
  • Her relationship with her body - how she's make peace with it and started to learn to love her body.
  • Her relationship with coffee (it used to be her "best friend" ☕️🥰).
  • The development of Not Coffee and how it's now helping people who can't drink coffee.

If you would like to try Not Coffee, you can use the coupon code THYROID20 at checkout for 20% off your first order.

Sila Gatti is the founder of Not Coffee, a Melbourne-based company that offers a coffee alternative that looks, acts, and tastes like coffee but without caffeine or stimulants. After developing Graves Disease and experiencing health issues that forced her to give up coffee, Sila developed Not Coffee as a solution for herself and others who were trying to give up coffee. Not Coffee is a healthy option that offers the familiar taste and ritual of coffee without the negative side effects associated with caffeine. With a background in marketing, Sila has used her expertise to build the Not Coffee brand and grow the business. She is passionate about helping people lead healthier lives and is committed to making Not Coffee an accessible and enjoyable option for everyone.

In this podcast episode, I discuss my ongoing Hashimoto's symptoms, which I have managed on and off for over 30 years. These symptoms fall into three categories:

  1. Brain eg brain fog, anxiety, mood issues, being easily upset.
  2. Body eg muscle fatigue/weakness, aches & pains.
  3. Weight - difficulty losing it!!

In this podcast episode I go into detail about each one & some practical things I have done and continue to do to help manage these symptoms.

NOTE: Whilst there are practical tips for dealing with symptoms you MUST not manage Hashimoto’s purely on a symptom by symptom basis. That’s like playing whack-a-mole. Hashimoto’s is a whole body disease and requires holistic management under the guidance of practitioners experienced in thyroid health.

I have written about 30 Common Hashimoto's Symptoms, in this little ebook. It covers each of these common symptoms positively & practically. You can purchase it as a PDF download here for only AU$7.95.

It's important to remember that thyroid medication is NOT a solution to the root cause of WHY you have a thyroid problem. You need to become a self-detective 🕵️‍♀️ and look into what the root causes are for your thyroid problem.

Whitney Morgan, functional nutritionist joins me on the podcast to talk about common root causes to hypothyroidism & Hashimoto's, how to find yours and then how to work with a practitioner or DIY your own investigation. Once unrooted, you have to address the root causes for the best long term thyroid health.

Whitney Morgan

Founder of Morgan Nutrition and the creator of the Thyroid Reboot Method and the Gluten Gauntlet Mini-course. I have helped dozens of women with chronic Hashimoto’s, and other autoimmune conditions, bust through the obstacles keeping them from the life they want by uncovering the root causes of their symptoms and eliminating their unique triggers.

I am a licensed acupuncturist, a functional nutritionist, and a certified gluten-free health coach. In addition to my private practice, I serve as a clinical advisor for the Association of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioners, assisting other functional practitioners with their client cases.

Dr Eric Balcavage joins me to discuss his new book (co-authored with Dr Kelly Halderman), The Thyroid Debacle.

The topics we cover in this discussion are:

  • The mainstream medical model and functional medical approach to thyroid health.
  • How to think of thyroid health as a spectrum disorder.
  • Tissue/cellular hypothyroidism (see Ep58 too) and how cells are being protective (not attacking).
  • Thyroid antibodies and how they aren't like pac-man gobbling up thyroid tissue but more like a clean up crew clearing debris.
  • Thyroid antibodies cause little to no damage to the thyroid gland according to research.
  • Lowering antibodies shouldn't be the goal in itself but may well be the consequence of reducing stress.
  • How can you test for cellular hypothyroidism?
  • T3 is made in peripheral tissue as well as in the thyroid, liver and gut.
  • You need to look at the different systems in the body to see where cellular hypothyroidism is taking place.
  • Multi-System Adaptive Disorder - your system isn't BROKEN, it's ADAPTING.
  • The solution to most chronic issues.
  • The a cell is in danger/defence mode, it's not in repair/regeneration mode or not in repair/regeneration mode tor long enough.
  • Your fitness 10 categories determines your overall fitness (we discuss 1 in a little detail - Respiratory Fitness)

Becky is a kindergarten teacher from northern California. She has only recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and has been brave enough to share the start of her journey with us. I love it when I have normal people, just like you and I on the podcast to share their stories.

What I loved from our conversation is the way Becky's has used her skills as a kindergarten teacher to help her learn about thyroid health and teach others (her Mom mainly as a member of her 'hypothyroid club' 😀

We cover:

  • Key symptoms that made her realise something wasn't right (severe period problems, migraines, anxiety, depression, tiredness, weight gain, puffiness)
  • The way her doctor told her in a throw-away comment "Oh yeah, and you have hypothyroid" but because her Mom has hypothyroidism too, she knew it wasn't trivial.
  • How she has tried to get information from her doctors but has felt they talk over her and 'firehose' her with information.
  • Becky's quest for learning took her to books and podcasts (in-step Let's Talk Thyroid!!).
  • How teaching her Mom what she's learning has helped them both.
  • Involving her husband and her broader family in her journey has been really helpful.
  • Going gluten free in a family that loves carbs (generational Italian family with recipes passed down many generations!) and where food = love (see tips below).
  • Building a support team.
  • How to approach thyroid health as a kindergarten teacher
  • What Becky has learnt about going gluten free

How to understand your hypothyroid blood tests is so important! TSH, T4, T3, Reverse T3, TPO ... what are these? What do they mean? What blood tests should you ask for?

When you have hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's or really any other thyroid conditions, it's helpful to understand what the 'thyroid blood tests' mean and how to interpret them for yourself.

In this episode of the Let's Talk Thyroid podcast I talked with Dr Anna Ord who is a General Practitioner in Perth, Australia. Dr Ord was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 4 years ago which gives her a very helpful perspective as a doctor on managing thyroid health!

We cover:

  • Dr Ord's personal thyroid experience (diagnosis, management), how it has impacted the way she investigates thyroid conditions and helps her patients manage theirs too.
  • Which hypothyroid blood tests to request - including normal & optimal levels
  • Why doctors DON'T request all these tests
  • What to do if your doctor won't order the tests for you
  • Other important tests for the hypothyroid patient.

Meet Dr Anna OrdDr Anna Ord MD, FRACGP is a family physician, a General Practitioner with a special interest in nutritional and environmental medicine. She obtained her speciality training with the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK over a decade ago.

After being diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis 4 years ago, she became determined to discover more about this common autoimmune condition in order to help herself and her patients manage daily symptoms.

She continues to attend courses and workshops to develop her expertise in the filed of nutritional medicine. She recently because an ACNEM Certified Doctor (Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine).

Like so many working in thyroid health, Jules Chandler's passion to help thyroid patients comes from her own journey from Graves Disease patient to practitioner.

14 years ago Jules was diagnosed with 'hyperactive thyroid', put on medication for 18 months and told they would then 'see what happens'.

This began a long and windy road to thyroid health recovery for Jules.

Along Jules journey, she studied naturopathic nutrition and became known amongst her fellow students as 'the thyroid expert'. She has founded The Thyroid Collective - her thyroid 'army' of practitioners on a mission to help thyroid patients across the UK and beyond.

In our conversation about her thyroid journey we cover topics including:

  • What lead to her hyper/Graves diagnosis.
  • Her complicated treatment path - this is a key difference between hypo and hyper thyroid - the treatment is very different.
  • Anti-thyroid medication.
  • "Caging' her thyroid (a 'fighty, wiley little devil')
  • Thyroidectomy.
  • The path from hyper to very hypo to 'normal' then RELAPSE.
  • The impact of gluten.
  • Thyroid eye disease (another Graves' difference).
  • How to prepare for an endocrinologist appointment
  • The impact an 'empowered and engaged patient' can make.
  • The importance of gathering with other thyroid patients from time to time - you are NOT alone.

Thank you Jules for all you do to serve the thyroid population across the globe. You are a thyroid health powerhouse.

Meet Jules ChandlerJules Chandler DipCNM is a Naturopathic Nutritional & Holistic Therapist specialising in thyroid disorders.

She is the founder of The Thyroid Collective, lectures a handful of times across the year for the College of Naturopathic Medicine and is currently writing a thyroid book before she returns to uni as a full time biomedical student!

Stem cell therapy is still very new in the medical sphere. As you'll learn from this podcast discussion, it's still experimental and not yet widely available.

Joy Kong MD says it's the future of health and will, one day, be a part of regular health management.

This conversation is much broader than just how stem cell therapy could possibly be used as part of thyroid health management - although we do cover some specific thyroid questions too.

This conversation covers:

  • What stem cell therapy is
  • Different kinds of stem cells and ethical considerations.
  • The key functions of stem cell therapy
  • How stem cells could be used as part of thyroid support
  • Stem Cell therapy research
  • Stem cell therapy in the context of anti-aging
  • How stem cell therapy is administered
  • Benefits of stem cell therapy both systemically and localised

Please note that no claims are being made by Dr Kong in this podcast.

Meet Joy Kong MDJoy Kong, M.D. is a UCLA-trained, triple board-certified physician (American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, American Board of Addiction Medicine, American Board of Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine). She is the president of Uplyft Longevity Center in Los Angeles, California, where she specializes in stem cell therapy, ketamine therapy, as well as a wide range of therapeutic modalities to enhance overall health and combat diseases in a holistic approach, esp. by enhancing the body’s innate regenerative potentials.

Thyroid conditions can run in families, so how do you know if your kids or teens might have a thyroid condition? Does it look different for them? If they do have a thyroid condition, how can you as a parent best support them?

This is what Tara Nelson and I are covering in this podcast episode. Tara is a naturopath specialising in thyroid health - she has Hashimoto's as does her teenage daughter so she is well equipped to teach us all about kids, teenagers and thyroid conditions.

We cover:

  • The main times kids/teens are diagnosed with a thyroid condition.
  • Key different presentations/things to look for in kids & teenagers.
  • Common Triggers
  • How to support your child.

Meet Tara Nelson

I am a Naturopath with over 25 years of clinical experience and I still absolutely love working with my clients to bring them into their peak state of health. My health journey began after years of an eating disorder and low self-esteem and for the love and desire to feel the best I can be. I aim to bring this to my clients.

My passion is working with clients suffering from a thyroid condition. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis myself as well as my 16-year-old daughter and can relate to the symptoms of the thyroid client. Thyroid problems are increasing at an alarming rate and most of my clientele come from a place of being under diagnosed or diagnosed but are still experiencing severe thyroid symptoms. I work holistically with thyroid patients to bring balance to their thyroid and reversing their disease process. I run an online Thyroid Recovery Program, as well as a 6-week online practitioner thyroid training program and mentor practitioners specifically with their thyroid cases.

I have 3 amazing children, a loving partner and 5 acres in Yallingup WA and absolutely love my life.

You're going to want to take notes as you listen to this episode (you could make them in the journal that's in My Thyroid Box 😀). This is a nice and meaty discussion about the thyroid SYSTEM and the impact that stress has on it.

Marek Doyle is a nutritional therapist in the UK (love having a UK expert on the show) and he's all about individualise health, which, let's face it, we need when we have a thyroid condition because it can be complicated and we all experience it differently.

In this episode Marek explains the whole thyroid system (it's more than the thyroid gland itself), where and what problems can arise in the different parts of the system. The also talk about the impact of stress, the connection between adrenals and thyroid and how important stress is to manage because it impacts us down to the cellular level.

Meet Marek Doyle:
Marek is a functional nutritional therapist who has spent the last 16 years building a model of personalized nutrition, based on the data of over 3,000 individual outcomes, 11,000 test results and extensive use of the scientific literature. Based in London, he offers one-to-one consultations for clients as well as training for practitioners. He holds an MSc in Personalized Nutrition.

It would be so much easier if simply taking a pill would solve all of our thyroid woes. We ALL wish that was the answer. The hard reality is though that it's not. Yes, thyroid medication is helpful if you need it, but it's not the 'magic pill' we all wish it was.

Instead, my guest on the show, Stacey Robbins says that YOU ARE THE MAGIC PILL YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR.

Living with a thyroid condition is a lifelong journey - it's a process. What is it trying to teach you? Why do you have a thyroid condition? Why would it be an autoimmune thyroid condition and not just a hypothyroid one? You need to get good at asking questions.

We need to be prepared to do the INSIDE work, to take responsibility for our actions (& inaction). We need to take loving actions and we need to be the leader in our own healing journey.

Lynne was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 12 years ago. It was feeling depressed despite it being a very happy time of her life, unexplained weight gain and exhaustion that were her main symptoms. Fortunately she was diagnosed fairly easily and put on medication but after a year or so she didn't feel any better.

Then began many years of research, reading, taking her health into her own hands, changing medication, diet and healing to the point where she has been off thyroid medication for a number of years.

Lynne is a very fit and active woman - you'll find her most days walking the moors near her home in the UK or hacking through ice in her local pond to swim in the cold! Actually she has been able to reflect that her cold water swimming has probably been a key factor in keeping her thyroid healthy! I think she's a super ice-woman!

Here are the key topics we cover:

  • Being your own health advocate.
  • Being prepared to do what's necessary to heal.
  • T3 medication.
  • Recovering with T3 by Paul Robinson and his Facebook group.
  • Dietary changes (in particular gluten, sugar, dairy and unprocessed food).
  • Cold water swimming
  • Essential oils and reducing chemicals around the home.

My first podcast interview with Bronte has been one of the top performing episodes, so I was thrilled to have her back on the show. Bronte is full of positive and practical information.

In this episode we cover:

  • An overview of Graves Disease - what it is, how to test for it, common triggers and an overview of how to manage it.
  • 4 core pillars for lifestyle change (these really apply to everyone regardless of your health!)
  • Graves Disease Questions such as:
  • What is the best diet for hyperthyroidism/Graves?
  • How does hyperthyroid medication impact the immune system?
  • Are there special considerations for pregnancy/breastfeeding?
  • What is earthing and how can it help?
  • Is fasting recommended for those with Graves Disease?
  • What if you've had a partial thyroidectomy, is there a risk of going hyPOthyroid?

Meet Bronte:
Bronte is a Naturopath with a passion for thyroid health. She knows firsthand the complicated and multi layered journey to heal from an autoimmune disease. Having had a negative experience within the mainstream medical system, she decided to educate her way to recovery… and did... healing herself from Graves disease and becoming a qualified Naturopath in the process.

Having learned so much about lifestyle medicine and the medical modality of Naturopathy during her own healing journey, she is now passionate about passing on this information to her own clients to empower them to be their own healers.

Bronte also offers a specific 12 week program, “THYROID RESET”, where she not only systematically uncovers the root causes of the health imbalance, but more importantly, simplifies the process of getting well again, including the mindset coaching to help you on this often challenging journey.

And when she isn’t doing that, her Instagram tells us that you can find her earthing with a cup of bone broth.

  • 3 pillars of what TO eat.
  • Rethinking breakfast foods

  • How to adapt cooking for the whole family
  • Meal ideas
  • Batching cook
  • Sweet treats.

Ginny Mahar is a thyroid health coach, cooking instructor, and patient advocate who teaches thyroid patients how to cook, eat, and live for optimal health. She has a 20+ year background as a Cordon Bleu-trained chef, food writer, and cooking instructor, but her life and career took a turn after her Hashimoto’s diagnosis. Through her own health transformation, she became a passionate advocate of supporting others on their own healing journeys. • Gut imbalances - microbiome, dysbiosis
  • Food sensitivities
  • SIBO
  • Mental/emotional and spiritual health and how they can block gut healing.

For a deeper dive into understand gut health and the gut-brain connection, get a copy of Dr Kozlowski's book, Unfunc your Gut.As a Functional Medicine M.D., Dr. Peter Kozlowski uses a broad array of tools to find the source of the body’s dysfunction: he takes the time to listen to his patients and plots their history on a timeline, considering what makes them unique and co-creating with them a truly individualized care plan. This is a question that I’ve been pondering for a long time. It’s something that often comes up for me personally in my appointments with my health practitioners and is a topic I’ve discussed with many of my guests on the podcast. See some of the related episodes below.

In this episode I take a deeper dive into this question of personality and most importantly, how do we make our personality work FOR us in our thyroid health, not against us.

The connection at its core seems to be about the aspects of certain personalities that are drawn to stress as it’s the stress that interferes with our thyroid.

Those I’ve spoken to, both professionals and people sharing their thyroid stories with me, do anecdotally and experientially feel there is a connection… and it seems they could be onto something!

I cover:

  • A French study that in part looked at autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s & Graves alongside Type 1 & 2 Diabetes) Take a read of it here: Personality Types in Individuals with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.
  • What is the difference between a Type A and a Type B personality?
  • What seems to be common traits amongst those with autoimmune thyroid disease?
  • The Give-Give-Give person + how to give from a position of emotional strength.
  • The Go-Go-Go person + how to ‘go’ well.
  • How to make our driven personalities work FOR us - I talk through some specific reframing examples to help us all!

Haley first noticed problems with her thyroid when she was pregnant with her now 21 yo, although it took about 4-5 years to be diagnosed and another 2-3 years to have more than just her TSH tested and get to the bottom of her thyroid issues. Primarily that she wasn’t converting T4 to T3.

Haley has been highly invested in her own education and advocating her own health. She even bought her doctor a copy of  Stop the Thyroid Madness to educate him.

Take a listen to Haley's story and be encouraged in your journey.

In this episode of the podcast, I chat with Damon Sununtnasuk from Palmara Health all about monolaurin. Monolaurin is a medium chain fatty acid dietary supplement that is synthesised from lauric acid. According to the research there are a few ways monolaurin may support thyroid health.

Here are the key topics we cover:

  • The importance of taking personal responsibility for your own health - to educate yourself and take time to research different topics.
  • Compliance - what this is for companies selling health products and supplements (and why we are careful with what we say in this podcast)
  • What is monolaurin?
    • Where is it found?
    • How is it made?
    • What forms can it come in?
    • The difference between taking monolaurin and just consuming coconut oil.
  • The main reasons people take monolaurin as a dietary supplement is for immune and digestive health.
  • The possible connections to thyroid health eg immune health, digestive health, pathogens (can be a thyroid trigger) and some of the research referred to below.
  • What to look for in good quality supplements generally.

Tracey Fry from Additive Free Lifestyle shares her personal thyroid story which began when she was 16 and was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. She later was diagnosed with Graves and had radio active iodine treatment. Fortunately, not all of her thyroid was destroyed and she is now working with her integrative doctor to support her thyroid function.

Fortunately, about 6-7 years ago Tracey, along with her sister Jo started digging into information about food additives and preservatives and had already been living an additive free lifestyle.

We cover topics like additive free living, toxic load, root causes, essential oils, lifestyle approach, finding a doctor, stress and anxiety.

Meet Tracey Fry

Tracey is co-founder of the blog Additive Free Lifestyle and has been teaching people how to live additive free for almost 7 years. She is the co-author of two incredible cookbooks and the co-founder of the program Additive Free Made Easy. Tracey's story actually starts with her sister Joanne, who looked into additives as a way to manager behavioural issues with her daughter, but it soon became apparent that living additive free could benefit everyone. The more Tracey learnt, the more she implemented and the more her health improved. She is married with two daughters, who now all benefit from the knowledge she now has...

Gosh we cover a lot of topics in this conversation! Reducing our chemical exposure and toxic load is something I talk about a lot.

The topics covered include:

  • The importance of getting out mindset, gut & blood right
  • Inflammation
  • Dehydration, water filtration and restructured water.
  • How the thyroid receptors on our cells can have communication breakdown due to chemical exposure.
  • Detoxing the body through things like colonic hydrotherapy and castor oil packs.
  • How the 2 main ways people come to reduce chemicals is either by being ‘enlighted’ or ‘frightened’ into it.
  • Looking after yourself helps you to offer your best gifts to the world, so please do look after yourself.
  • Endocrine disrupting chemicals – esp plastics and synthetic fragrances…
  • Essential oils as perfumes
  • How to shop for food when trying to reduce chemicals
  • Reconnect with nature
  • Turmeric and cellular inflammation
  • Saunas (see Youtube for this – towards the end)
  • A reminder to take it one step at a time.

This podcast episode is airing on the 1st birthday of the Let’s Talk Thyroid podcast and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to go back to basics about thyroid health.

Here are some of the topics we covered in our conversation:

  • A bit about Tara’s personal story and what got her into a thyroid-focused practice.
  • What is the thyroid?
  • How does it work?
  • What commonly can go wrong with the thyroid. We cover:
  • Hypothyroid/Hashimoto’s
  • Hyperthyroid/Graves
  • Thyroid Nodules
  • Thyroid Cancer
  • Thyroidectomy
  • Cellular hypothyroidism
  • What causes thyroid problems?
  • How do we test for thyroid problems? What should we be asking for?
  • What happens when the tests come back ‘normal’ but we don’t feel normal?
  • What role do supplementation, diet & lifestyle play – even if you have no thyroid.
  • How to find a good practitioner for thyroid health.

About Tara:

I am a Naturopath with over 25 years of clinical experience and I still absolutely love working with my clients to bring them into their peak state of health. My health journey began after years of an eating disorder and low self-esteem and for the love and desire to feel the best I can be. I aim to bring this to my clients.

My passion as a Naturopath is about educating people about how to eat well and live well, for them to take control of their own health by making the changes of eating better and eliminating lifestyle practices that are not supporting this process. My commitment to you as a patient is 100% and when you commit 100% also, the results are phenomenal. I love to work with people who are ready to make the changes to their health to become a vibrant, healthy you.

My passion is working with clients suffering from a thyroid condition. I have Hashimotos thyroiditis myself as well as my 16-year-old daughter and can relate to the symptoms of the thyroid client.

You might have heard to go gluten free for your thyroid, but why, what's the big deal?

My guest on today's podcast, Whitney Morgan is passionate about educating people with Hashimoto's about the role gluten plays in our health (well interfering with it). It is a slightly longer episode than usual but we pack a LOT of great information into it.

Some of the keys we talk about were:

  • What is the difference between Coeliac Disease and Non-Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity?
  • Is gluten sensitivity all that serious?
  • How gluten sensitivity can present in ways other than gut health eg mood, brain/neurological symptoms, joint pain, skin issue... the list is very long...
  • How to test for gluten sensitivity and gluten antibodies.
  • The best way to tackling going gluten-free.
  • The addictive nature of gluten.
  • Molecular mimicry and gluten cross-reactivity.
  • The Coping Cycle when giving up gluten.

From Whitney:

I am Whitney Morgan.

This is my Mum's thyroid story. Tine (short for Christine) is a pretty amazing woman (bias aside) and has always been my number one fan.

12 months ago, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and I'm grateful she has been willing to share the beginning of her thyroid journey with you on the podcast.

Although diagnosed only 12 months ago, Mum looks back and can see related issues since she was a teenager - irregular periods, endometriosis, hormonal issues. She's had her thyroid (TSH only) tested on and off over the years - always normal. Last year after I did a series on common Hashimoto's symptoms, she could really resonate with some symptoms (gut issues, insomnia, joint pain in particular) and with some (less than gentle prompting from me) she insisted her doctor refer her for a full thyroid panel *including thyroid antibodies* and that resulted in a Hashimoto's diagnosis.

We cover:

  • Making changes can be a grieving process -a continual one!
  • What she noticed with me as a teenager and as I was diagnosed at 23 with Hashimoto's.
  • Mindset as the hardest but most important part to change.
  • The challenges of making changes at 70 yrs old and in the baby-boomer generation.
  • Working with her personality to make things easier.
  • How she's been educating her friends about thyroid health and a gluten free diet.
  • Slowing down.
  • Food!
  • Her top tips and more.

Thanks Mum for all your support and encouragement. I'm so proud of you and how you're dealing with your health. Love you. xx

My guest on today's podcast, Dafne Wiswell is no stranger to chronic illness. She has dealt with depression, panic attacks, rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto's. Her 3 children all have health issues too - Sensory Processing Disorder, juvenile arthritis and Type 1 Diabetes!

Unsurprisingly, Dafne thinks stress was a trigger for her auto-immune conditions and so has dedicated a lot of time and effort in learning how to manage her stress well so she can have the energy and capacity to, well, deal with everyday life!

Some of the keys we talk about were:

  • Trusting your intuition with diet and going back to what you know works well for you when you need to (plant based for her)
  • How Dafne protects her mental and emotional space
  • Boundaries with people
  • Turning off notifications on her phone.
  • Stop multitasking.
  • Being really careful with her schedule and planning time for the things that make her feel grounded.
  • Things that help Dafne to rest.
  • Mindset
  • Letting go of health 'perfection'
  • The thyroid personality

What I enjoyed about this conversation with Dafne was her gentleness with herself, and I'm sure with those she works with. She has a sense of peace which I'm sure comes from her faith and having done the hard work of 'letting go' of so many of the uncontollables!

About Dafne Wiswell

Dafne is a wife, homeschool mom of 20+ years, and a Board Certified Integrative Nutrition Coach. She's spent twenty years studying and developing practical and spiritual strategies to help others unlock the healing potential that is already inside of them. For years she battled depression, anxiety, panic attacks, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the debilitating pain of rheumatoid arthritis. She discovered that changing the thoughts in her mind and the food on her plate could create powerful shifts in her health and life. She's on a mission to hand others the keys they need to experience this abundant life for themselves!

Tapping, also known as Emotional Freedom Technique is a tool where you use your fingers to 'tap' on a sequence of acupressure points on the body.

I know it does sound a bit crazy, but think of it as acupuncture without the needles. It's a tool that has been shown in different studies to reduce cortisol (stress hormone). In one sense it's a form of active meditation.

In this episode of Let's Talk Thyroid, I'm chatting with internationally renowned 'tapper', Brad Yates about the technique which really is quite simple, so once you know how, it's easy to use anytime and anyplace on pretty much anything!

Stress can be a trigger for auto-immune thyroid diseases (Hashimoto's and Graves). Stress also creates inflammation which wreaks havoc on thyroid (& much more) health, so the more tools we have in our stress relief toolkit the better.

As Brad says, if our bodies aren't constantly dealing with 'ambient stress', all the time, there is more bandwidth for the body to heal. So whether tapping directly or indirectly helps our thyroid health, it doesn't really matter!

There are times of course when it's best to seek professional support or to even tap with a friend. If you're dealing with some really big emotions, stress or trauma, please get support.

You'll find it easier to WATCH the actual tapping sequences. We go through 2 in the episode. They can be found:

Intro stress sequence: @ 31 min

Longer thyroid sequence: @38.45

Brad Yates is known internationally for his creative and often humorous use of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Brad is the author of the best-selling children's book "The Wizard's Wish," the co-author of the best-seller "Freedom at Your Fingertips," and a featured expert in the film “The Tapping Solution.” He has also been a presenter at a number of events, including Jack Canfield's Breakthrough to Success, has done teleseminars with “The Secret” stars Bob Doyle and Dr. Joe Vitale, and has been heard internationally on a number of internet radio talk shows. Brad also has well over 1000 videos on YouTube, that have been viewed over 32 million times.

Leanne's Thyroid Story, like so many is long and windy and reveals a deeply personal struggle and commitment to her own health.

Leanne has really taken her health into her own hands and, together with the help of a couple of different naturopaths has been able to identify a key root cause/trigger and how to really manage that part of her health.

We talk about:

  • Reducing antibodies
  • How to include your partner in the health process
  • How important it is to find the right practitioner to work with at the right time
  • Liver support
  • How to pace yourself - Leanne says this has been critical for her as a way of empowering her to exercise self-care - she has a few practices she's built into her calendar too.
  • How resting is not lazy.
  • Our favourite essential oils - how to use them safely (& what NOT to do!)
  • Leanne's top 3 tips for others.

Thank you Leanne for sharing your story with me, I know it will be an encouragement to many others as they travel their thyroid journey's too.

Unresolved stress or past trauma (big or small) may be getting in the way of your thyroid healing.

In this chat with Justin Janoska, we dive into

  • How helping his Mom/Mum (😀) with her Hashimoto's lead him into this space.
  • Is there a thyroid 'personality'? ie common personality traits that he sees commonly with the women he works with. (Enneagrams 1 & 3s take note)
  • How you can 'get in your own way'.
  • The importance of unscheduled time-out.
  • The inability to heal in a toxic-environment.
  • Common other auto-immune diseases that those with Hashimoto's tend to 'collect'!
  • Where to start when it comes to improving your thyroid health
  • How the process of being diagnosed/treated can be a trauma in and of itself.

We are exposed to hundreds, if not thousands of chemicals each day - in the air we breath, the furniture we sit on, food we eat, medications, skin care, hair care, perfumes and air fresheners. So in this episode let’s talk all things 'detox'.

  • How does our body deal with these chemicals?
  • How can we help our bodies deal more efficiently with them?
  • Special considerations for those with thyroid issues.
  • How can we reduce our chemical exposure/toxic load?

I get a little bit science-y (in my limited way!) and share some practical outworkings of how we can support our body's natural biotransformation (detox) pathways and how to reduce chemical exposure in the first place!

Angela feels like she's spent her life tired and looking back thinks she's probably had thyroid issue for decades before being properly diagnosed. Although diagnosed with an underactive thyroid is wasn't until over a decade later she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's.

She says she didn't really identify with many of the typical symptoms so tended to downplay it, but can see that it's crept up on her to the point that the last 2 years she's required medication and has really embarked on the research and self-empowerment health journey!

This research has, in part led her down a path of switching to toxic free products, having been exposed to a lot of chemicals growing up on a farm and working as a Dental Nurse. She's switched her to clean cleaning products, personal care products and loves her doTERRA essential oils and their Lifelong Vitality supplements.

Angela is a Personal Trainer and is a firm believer in food, nutrition and gut health being critical to her over all health. She's found that a paleo based diet works best for her and has loved my Kickstart Your Thyroid Wellness Lifestyle Challenge so much that she's back for a second round ;-)

Enjoy listening to Angela share her story.

We all know how important managing our stress is, but let’s be real… knowing and doing are often 2 different things!

If you’re like me, knowing WHY it’s important is key to taking those necessary actions, and in this episode of the podcast, I talk with Meredith Edwards about both WHY managing our stress is important and HOW we can do it.

We dive into the central nervous system and how we can get stuck in fight/flight which leaves us in a chronically stressed state – we talk about some of the signs that you might be ‘stuck’ all revved up too.

We also cover:
Exercise

Foods

Sleep

Mindfulness

Have you ever wondered what herbs can be used to support your thyroid health? Perhaps you’ve been to a naturopath or herbalist who has prescribed you some herbs, or just stood in a health food aisle wondering if there is something that might help!

Well, Ashleigh Mythen is a naturopath & herbalist here in this episode to help us understand which herbs to consider for hypothyroid, hyperthyroid and also for the auto-immune component.

We have a chat about Turmeric, Devils’s Claw, Withania (AKA Ashwanganda), Lemon Balm, Romania, Passionflower, Maca, Mushrooms and more!

I love that many of the tips in this conversation revolved around incorporating these herbs into our everyday cooking – it doesn’t have to mean taking swathes of supplements. Adding to our food sources can be a gentle and safe way of introducing these herbs into our routines too.

Ashleigh Mythen is a Melbourne based Naturopath & Herbalist passionate about preventative and holistic health care.

Christmas means so many different things for each of us but for most, it's a busy season and can be quite stressful. So.... what are a few things we can do to make it fun, happy and not undo all the good we've been doing for our thyroid health?! Really it's more than Christmas survival, it's about thriving through Christmas :-)

Here are some of my thoughts - what works for my Christmas Survival plan. I'd love you to join the discussion in the Let's Talk Thyroid Community as I know you'll have some ideas to share with the rest of us too!

Firstly, I think it's important to release that in practical terms, Christmas is at least a month, if not 6 weeks. It's NOT just 1 day! Not in terms of the busyness, food, stress and relationships anyway. So, we need to tackle it as a season... even if it's a mini-season if we are going to survive Christmas well!

The topics discussed this week are:
1. Planning for success.
2. People - protecting our relationships!
3. Essential oils - my favourite for emotional and physical support over Christmas.
4. Food - of course!
5. A few handy hacks to make life easier.

Enjoy!

Denise Roguz is a woman on a big mission: changing thyroid care across the globe by advocating for full thyroid testing and treatment options AND uniting both medical professionals and patients in the quest for personalised optimal thyroid health care.

After taking 17 YEARS and about 20 different doctors across 3 states to be diagnosed with a thyroid disease Denise was angry, and rightly so! She had the symptoms, the family history (all the women in her family with thyroid issues) and knew in her heart of hearts she had thyroid problems. Finally, she found a doctor who ran a full thyroid panel and gave her the answers she was looking for.

In this episode, Denise shares much of her personal thyroid story, the mission of ThyroidChange and how YOU as a patient, can advocate for your own thyroid health.

Denise Roguz is the co-founder of ThyroidChange, LLC a collaborative network, health information website, and social media campaign. Symptoms for both thyroid disease and menopause overlap. Brain fog, fatigue, weight gain, lack of libido... So, how do you know what's what? Which comes first... the chicken or the egg?

Dr Labbe has been working with women with both thyroid problems and hormonal issues for well over 20 years and so I was thrilled to pick her brains about the connection between thyroid & menopause. Like many professionals in this space, Dr Labbe has Hashimoto's so we touch on some of her thyroid story too.

Personally, I'm on the cusp of peri-menopause at 46, so I was keen to get the low-down so I can be as prepared as I can be!

The key topics covered in this discussion are:

  • The connection between menopause & thyroid.
  • Can menopause trigger Hashimoto's or 'reignite' Hashimoto's that has been in remission?
  • Test not guess - know where your body is actually at and get to the root cause of what's going on for you at the stage of life.
  • Inflammation
  • Birth control - the IUS in particular and whether it can help with menopause symptoms.
  • Foods to avoid and a few to make sure to include for thyroid support.
  • Dr Labbe's top 3 tips for those with both thyroid & menopause issues going on.
  • Sex! Or lack of it, more to the point.

DR. JONI LABBE (DC, CCN, DCCN, FCCN) IS A FUNCTIONAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER AND BOARD-CERTIFIED CLINICAL NUTRITIONIST. SHE SPECIALIZES IN SCIENCE-BASED NUTRITION WITH A FOCUS ON HYPOTHYROID, HASHIMOTO’S, AND HORMONES.

I'd love to introduce you to my friend Nikki. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 10 years ago when she went to the doctor because she was having trouble catching her breath. I have heard other's describe this as 'air hunger'. Looking back she was also experiencing brain fog, hair loss & migraines and not long before she was diagnosed went through a very stressful time after her sister passed away.

Like many of us, when she was diagnosed she'd never heard of Hashimoto's and has done a lot of reading and research - although after wearing herself out with research has learnt to find her feet with how to manage her health.

Nikki is a church Pastor (of the church I go to) and has had to learn over time how to manage her personal boundaries in a very people-oriented line of work. We chat in this podcast episode a fair bit about stress, how she's protected her physical, mental and emotional health.

As it happens the last few weeks I’ve seen a theme emerge: stress & mood management!

We know that stress has a whole lot of negative impact on our overall thyroid health. There are quite a few tools in my stress/mood management toolkit, including diet, sleep, saying no, creating ‘white space’ but my essential oils are a very important tool in that toolkit!

In this episode I talk about:

My experience with essential oils – going from a smell hater (because they made me feel sick!) to a smell lover.

  • What essential oils are
  • How essential oils work (aromatically with our olfactory system and topically entering our bodies through the skin).
  • What essential oils are NOT
  • Different essential oils, that because of their chemistry are lovely for when you want to lift your mood/feel happy and energised.
  • Different essential oils, that because of their chemistry are perfect for when you want to calm and settled during the day, and restful at night.
  • A few of my favourite ways I use these oils in my daily routine.
  • If you’d like my current sleep roller recipe that I rub on my temples, forearms, bottoms of my feet… pretty much all over at bedtime as part of my bedtime rituals fill out the form on the shownotes and if you’d like a simple place to start with using essential oils as your own powerful & gentle tool in YOUR toolkit, check out the Emotional Wellness Starter Kit on the same page.

As both a patient and a practitioner, Bronte shares so much practical advice for thyroid warriors of all kinds!

As a Graves Disease patient, she created her own treatment option when those offered by her doctor didn't sit well with her. She was able to significantly reduce her antibodies through diet and stress management, something many doctors don't see as possible.

We talk a lot about stress, the process of healing and mindset. You'll love Bronte's Mario Bros analogy of how we 'level up' our healing as we learn along the way in our health journeys.

"Love yourself enough to give yourself 5 mins out of your day just for you"
"I send love to my thyroid everyday"
"Create your own options ... you know best what your next step is"
- Bronte May.

I tell you, you'll want to listen to this thyroid chat. Thank you Bronte!

Bronte is a Naturopath with a passion for thyroid health. She knows firsthand the complicated and multi-layered journey to heal from an autoimmune disease. Having had a negative experience within the mainstream medical system, she decided to educate her way to recovery… and did... healing herself from Graves disease and became a qualified Naturopath in the process.

Having learned so much about lifestyle medicine and the medical modality of Naturopathy during her own healing journey she became very passionate about helping others navigate, improve and heal their own autoimmune issues and now helps her clients by systematically uncovering the root cause of the problem, not just suppressing symptoms, and more importantly, simplifies the process of getting well again. And when she isn’t doing that, her Instagram tells us that you can find her earthing with a cup of bone broth.

Michelle was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid in her early twenties and was put on medication but her thyroid antibody levels were never tested. It wasn't until about 25 years later she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's.

Trusting her instincts that she wasn't 'crazy' she kept trying to get help. This seems to be a common story for those not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto's... they know something isn't 'right' but have trouble identifying what it is.

Michelle has done a lot of inner work on her attitude, mindset and taken responsibility for managing her health. She's taken time to build a supportive 'team' around her - moving to a quieter place, some good friends, a doctor & naturopath to work with and loves our online Let's Talk Thyroid Community too.

It's funny because without her realising, she covers a few things we covered in last weeks episode too about saying no!

Thank you Michelle for sharing your thyroid story with us all, I know many will benefit.

Managing our day to day stress is important for our thyroid health but what if we could remove some of the things that cause this stress?

A root cause approach to stress management? Makes more sense doesn't it?

In order to do this, we need to learn how to say no!

You'd think it would be simple. Just say no. But we know that it's not that simple.

We know that many of us with thyroid issues tend to have personalities that like to take on more than we can handle, we bottle things up and don't always express our ourselves well. It's no surprise to me that most of us have trouble saying no!

This episode is just as much for me as it might be for you!

I cover questions like:

Why don't we just say no?

How can you actually say no and keep your friends and self-respect?

We also explore the idea of setting boundaries, knowing our core values, not over-scheduling our days and lots of practical tips on how to actually say no!

I’ve been promoting a lifestyle approach to wellness, for years. But what does it actually mean?

Let's talk about what a lifestyle approach IS, what it is NOT and the key factors that make up a thyroid wellness lifestyle.

If you want to have long term benefits for your thyroid health, then you have to take a lifestyle approach. Your lifestyle will be different to mine, but there are core features that should be there in some form or other!

Brain fog, lack of concentration & focus and fatigue are neurological symptoms that are also common thyroid disease symptoms. Dr Philippe Douyon says in this episode, that in his neurology practise, that many of his patients present with these neurological symptoms and have not been diagnosed with thyroid issues. Once tested and treated for the underlying thyroid condition, these neurological symptoms resolve.

In this conversation about the brain & thyroid health connection, we cover topics such as:

  • The connection between thyroid and brain health.
  • The difference in brain health problems for those with Hashimoto’s v Graves
  • When to see a neurologist
  • Do we lose brain function over time with thyroid conditions?
  • The metaphysical & personality connection with thyroid health.
  • Diet for good brain health.
  • The type of exercise that's good for brain & thyroid health.
  • The impact of stress. Did you know that stress kills neurons?
  • Dr Douyon's 5 top tips for brain health.

You'll love Dr Douyon's whole person, collaborative approach to brain health. His advice is practical, positive and gives me hope for my long term thyroid/brain health!

Philippe Douyon, MD is a Board Certified Neurologist who completed his residency in Neurology at New York University and fellowship at New York Presbyterian-Cornell in Clinical Neurophysiology. He has spent the last several years caring for people with neurological disorders with a special emphasis on those with a history of epilepsy, seizures, and non epileptic events.

After spending years witnessing the deleterious effects of neurological disorders, watching people take medications that at best ameliorate symptoms, but do little to modify the underlying disease process, and observing the delicate balancing act between side effects and symptom relief, he began to realize that we could do better for the people we serve.

Therefore, he decided to create a therapeutic, supportive environment, aimed at using a multimodal approach to improve the lives of people with neurological disorders and promote brain health.

Second only to gluten as a dietary trigger for auto-immune thyroid issues, is dairy. That's why doctors and health practitioners looking at a diet to support their thyroid patients will often recommend giving up both gluten & dairy.

Symptoms of dairy intolerance include reflux, bloating, diarrhoea, respiratory symptoms (eg cough, sinusitis, asthma) and skin reactions (eg psoriasis, eczema).

In this episode we cover

  • dairy intolerance - the issue of casein
  • lactose intolerance
  • types of dairy to avoid
  • dairy as possible cross-reaction to the thyroid gland
  • dairy as a trigger for thyroid disease
  • how & why to eliminate dairy
  • how to know if you have a dairy intolerance
  • practical alternatives for milk, cheese, butter etc.

I'm loving talking to people in the Let's Talk Thyroid Community because here are real people who are doing the hard work to support their health and have lots of great ideas to share with others.

Jeni was diagnosed with Graves Disease only in January. She was overheating, losing a lot of weight, running to the toilet and her heart rate was through the roof!

Jeni believes that years of anxiety, stress and overworking caused her body to go into overdrive. We talk a fair bit in this episode about being a 'busy woman' and how that often seems to be a trigger for a range of thyroid issues.

Whilst Jeni is still fairly new to having thyroid disease, she has dived right into seeking out information, other's experiences and learning how she can manage her health in the long term. She is keen to share her experiences as they are unfolding in the hope that it will help others.

Graves disease is an overactive auto-immune thyroid condition, whereas Hashimoto's (what I have) is more common, there are many in our Let's Talk Thyroid Community with Graves too (or fluctuate between the 2), so I'm so grateful Jeni has shared her story with us.

Thank you Jeni!

Did you miss PART 1? Head back to episode 10 where we covered the why, where and what of going gluten free. Now let's get practical and talk about HOW to implement a gluten free diet.

In preparing for this episode, I was reminded just how good my cookbook actually is, because really, it's more than a cookbook. I have lots of information in it about how I went gluten free, ideas for sticking with it when you travel or are out and about. There are meal ideas and approaches to meals, not just recipes. In fact I have been surprised by the number of people who have told me they sat down ad 'read' it cover to cover!

Not got your copy yet?

What Annabel Cooks: Real Food Recipes that will make you Flourish.

Many recipes available for free on whatannabelcooks.com

Tips for implementing a gluten free diet?

  1. Make a decision - honestly, it's my biggest tip. Just decide if you are and how you are going to do it. Takes all the little decisions out of it then.
  2. Be prepared - stock the house with ingredients you can eat, remove those you can't.
  3. Be inspired - try new recipes, buy a new book or 2.
  4. Have fun - seriously, it's a gift not a punishment.
  5. Tell others and get support.

How to approach a meal?🥣 Rethink breakfast - left overs are great, an egg and veggie fry-up, smoothie, breakfast soup
🥩 Decide on a protein, which fat will you cook it in (i use macadamia oil, coconut oils, olive oil, butter) and then add a mix of colourful veggies - try cutting them in different shapes for variety!

Are you a turkey or a frog?Depending on your personality, you might like to take either a cold turkey or a frog in a pot approach. You decide what works best for you. Personally I’m a turkey! In the podcast I go over some tips for each approach and who it might be best for.

Sharon Wilford has been one of my personal naturopaths and a very good friend of mine for over 15 years.

Sharon has lots of tools in her naturopathic toolkit. Aside from herbs, supplements, and diet, Sharon uses a variety of tests, Applied Kinesiology (muscle testing), Neurolink and Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) with her patients.

We cover:

  • Some of the things to look for in a physical examination, common symptoms and clinical indicators of a thyroid condition.
  • Common nutritional deficiencies.
  • Why is gut health so important?
  • Neural pathways - are they connecting and flowing properly? What could be blocking them? Neurolink as a technique to help the neural pathways to work more optimally.
  • Being 'ready' to make changes.
  • The stress response and the critical role it plays in thyroid patients.
  • The personality connection!
  • NET and the researched connection to stress, trauma. & cortisol. Where your body is storing stress/trauma and using the NET technique to release it.
  • Toxicity as a thyroid trigger.

To connect with Sharon, head to Sharon Wilford Naturopathy. Her clinic is both in New Farm, Brisbane and online.

I'm loving talking to people in the Let's Talk Thyroid Community because here are real people who are doing the hard work to support their health and have lots of great ideas to share with others.

Sharon was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 20 years ago after feeling extremely fatigued and hair falling out, having to change jobs due to the fatigue.

An overachiever by nature, as seems to be for many with Hashimoto's, we talk about how that personality trait can impact on our health and how Sharon has learnt to manage it through changing jobs, awareness of stressful triggers and being proactive in using some specific essential oils to help stay calmer and grounded during the day.

We cover Sharon's daily habits, her thyroid triggers, diet, supplements, essential oils and other lifestyle factors that have worked well for her. Finding a great holistic doctor has been significant and we talk about her 'secret weapon', as her partner, Leonie is a naturopath! Imagine having a naturopath on tap. Yes, Sharon, we are all a bit jealous ;-)

Sharon shares her story with quiet wisdom and kindness that comes from walking her talk. It's the little tweaks along the way that show an accumulative benefit.

Thank you Sharon for sharing your story, I know it will help many of our listeners.

Have you thought about going gluten free but thought it was all too hard?

That was me for sure. For about 10 years before I took the plunge!

🤷‍♀️ What would I eat? Would it really make that much difference? Is is just a fad? But I love to eat... But I love to cook...

I get that it can seem impossible.

It's not.

It just takes knowing WHY you want to go gluten free, WHERE it is found so you know how to avoid it and WHAT you can eat. That's what this episode is all about.

Next comes the HOW do you actually do it?

That's going to be part 2 in a separate podcast.

Whilst I've gone GF as part of my thyroid health, there are many other health reasons to consider giving it a go even if thyroid isn't your thing! Gluten/leaky gut has been connected to other auto immune diseases, perhaps you want to get rid of some bloating, think more clearly or have more energy. All reasons to give it a go and see if it makes a difference!

I explore lots of practical information and strategies around this whole topic on going gluten free in this week's podcast episode and have put lots of links to products and information in the shownotes if you want a cheat-sheet of sorts.

There is power in a story. The more those of us with thyroid diseases talk about our experiences, the more we will help each other. That's why sharing stories from our Let's Talk Thyroid Community is important to me.

I’d love you to listen as Robyn shares her thyroid story. Robyn was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s 3 years ago, although was on medication for a high TSH for a few years before that, and has lots of practical wisdom to share around how she has learnt to solve the ‘puzzle’ that is living with Hashimoto’s!

Having a family history of thyroid disease, Robyn was alert to thyroid symptoms and so was blessed to have her Hashimoto’s diagnosed fairly quickly, despite her doctor initially diagnosing her with depression (a pretty common story). Robyn knew she wasn’t depressed and so kept digging, found a new doctor who has been treating her thyroid and her symptoms. We chat about things like brain fog, reducing chemical load, thyroid triggers, setting boundaries and self care.

Thank you Robyn for sharing your story, I know it will help many of our listeners.

When I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's at 23, I don’t remember thinking about WHY I had Hashimoto’s. I don’t remember asking what caused it. Perhaps I was just too tired, too young and information wasn’t as available as it is now. I don’t know, but I have spent time since trying to figure it out!

It really is important to take the time to go back and work out what the causes and triggers are for you. Otherwise medication, diet and lifestyle changes are like cover ups and not dealing with the real issues. This is why a long term holistic approach to managing your health is really the best approach.

In this episode I talk about the factors that create the perfect storm for autoimmune thyroid disease and some practical things we can do to address them.

Chinese Medicine is the world's oldest system of medicine. In this episode, I talk with Doctor of Chinese Medicine, Dr Maz Roginski, about a Chinese Medicine approach to thyroid health.

I love that, as Dr Maz says, Chinese Medicine takes a whole-person approach to health, something that I've learnt is critical for good thyroid health management. With that in mind, we explore a wide range of topics such as gut health, digestion, the type of exercise that a good for thyroid health, stress, inflammation, herbs and acupuncture.

You may be familiar with the idea of Yin & Yang but I expect you will learn more about how to bring these ancient concepts into balance. Our modern world and busyness would benefit from taking a step back in time and applying some of these ancient Chinese Medicine philosophies.

Meet Dr Maz Roginksi
Maz’s healing philosophy is that of supporting the individual to regain their optimal health – correcting imbalances and restoring function to address the root cause. Maz was awarded a Bachelor of Health Science in Chinese Medicine and completed a further Diploma in Canonical Chinese Medicine, focusing on the contemporary clinical application of ancient herbal medicines. She has also furthered her acupuncture knowledge by training with Dr. Richard Tan and Dr. Wei Chieh-Young, renowned for their methods in pain relief and pain management.

Maz has a life-long interest in health and natural wellness. A yoga practitioner for over 25 years, she has been blessed to have studied with many prominent teachers around the globe, and she incorporates this understanding of movement physiology into her work. Prior to commencing her studies in Chinese Medicine, Maz studied both Yoga Teacher Training and Tui Na (Chinese Remedial Massage), though it was in healing from her own autoimmune health crisis that her path focused upon Chinese Medicine. After personally experiencing the power of Chinese Medicine in her own healing, Maz was driven to immerse herself into this medicine in order to help others regain their health in a safe, effective and natural way.

Coming from a family of scientists and doctors, Maz keeps up with the latest scientific research and developments, and is excited to see how modern discoveries echo ancient healing knowledge.
