Creed is an American rock band that formed in 1994 in Tallahassee, Florida. For the majority of its existence, the band consisted of lead vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist and vocalist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips. Creed released two studio albums, My Own Prison in 1997 and Human Clay in 1999, before Marshall left the band in 2000. The band's third album, Weathered, was released in 2001, with Tremonti handling bass guitar. Creed disbanded in 2004; Stapp pursued a solo career while Tremonti, Marshall, and Phillips went on to found the band Alter Bridge with Myles Kennedy in 2004.
In 2009, after months of speculation, Creed reunited for a fourth album, Full Circle, and actively toured until 2012. Since then, Creed has been on hiatus while the instrumental members have remained active with Alter Bridge; Stapp has continued his solo career and joined the band Art of Anarchy in 2016. Tremonti also formed his own band, Tremonti, in 2011.
Creed is often recognized as one of the prominent acts of the post-grunge movement that began in the mid-1990s. Becoming popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Creed released three consecutive multi-platinum albums, with their album Human Clay being certified diamond. Creed has sold over 28 million records in the United States,[1] has sold over 53 million albums worldwide,[2] and was the ninth best-selling artist of the 2000s.[3] However, Creed has been negatively received by some critics and listeners, with the band having been listed by readers of Rolling Stone magazine as the worst artist of the 1990s.[4]

Founding member, vocalist Scott Stapp Creed's origins lie in 1994 in Tallahassee, Florida.[5] Founding members vocalist Scott Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti had been classmates in high school and friends at Florida State University.[6] Upon reuniting, Stapp and Tremonti realized that they had a mutual love for writing music and performing. After multiple discussions and times spent writing songs, several of which addressed themes of Christian theology and spirituality due to Stapp's religious background as the stepson of a Pentecostal minister, the duo held auditions which led to the recruitment of bassist Brian Marshall, drummer Scott Phillips, and rhythm guitarist Brian Brasher to complete the quintet. This five-piece line-up lasted through 1994, though Brasher left the band in 1995. Creed then decided to remain as a four-piece band. The four musicians had already written and collaborated on four of the songs that would go on to become tracks on Creed's chart-topping debut album, My Own Prison. The band found local success and started to play shows in bars and small venues throughout Tallahassee. Stapp wrote in 2012 that Creed first performed as "Naked Toddler" at Yianni's in Tallahassee; the name was picked up by Tremonti from a headline in that day's newspaper, but the reaction that night to the name was negative. The group was trying to find inspiration for a better name when Marshall said he had been in a band called Mattox Creed. Stapp latched onto the Creed part, and the band agreed.[5][7]
My Own Prison and rise to fame (1997–1998) Wanting "a real show at a club", they managed to persuade the owner of a bar in Tallahassee to book them by claiming that they could guarantee an audience of 200 people.[8] Owner and manager Jeff Hanson later told HitQuarters that the band had played mostly cover versions, but two original songs stood out and impressed the manager so much that he promptly signed them to his management and promotions company and set about developing their act.[9] For their first recordings he matched the band up with John Kurzweg, a producer and friend of Hanson's who he felt was an appropriate fit. Together they recorded their debut album for $6,000, which was funded by Hanson.[9] The album, titled My Own Prison, was initially self-released on their own label, Blue Collar Records, selling 6,000 copies throughout the state of Florida.
My Own Prison had been circulating around the music industry for a while when, in May 1997, Diana Meltzer from Wind-Up Records heard the album for the first time and decided almost immediately that she wanted to sign them to the label,[10] which had recently dropped Baboon over the latter's reluctance to alter their image and sound to suit the label's demands. Meltzer later said that she heard "an arena band".[10] Within the same week, Meltzer, together with Wind-up president Steve Lerner, CEO Alan Meltzer, and A&R representative Joel Mark, flew to Tallahassee to see Creed perform live and decide for certain whether to offer them a contract. "Seeing the energy in the room when Scott Stapp stepped up to the mic, and hearing his powerful voice fill the room, alongside Mark Tremonti's now legendary guitar riffs and that big Creed anthemic rock sound, was all I needed," she told HitQuarters.[10] According to Tremonti in his "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction" video, Creed had been rejected by Arctic and Cherry Universal Records before Wind-Up flew down to sign them. The band has been signed with Wind-Up records ever since. Stapp and Marshall originally signed the contract in blood; causing it to need to be reprinted.[9]
Bassist Brian Marshall My Own Prison was remixed, given a more radio-friendly sound, and re-released by Wind-up Records in 1997. Four singles were released from the album: "My Own Prison", "Torn", "What's This Life For", and "One". Each of these songs reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, making Creed the first band to accomplish such a feat with a debut album.[6] With little MTV exposure, media coverage, or label support, My Own Prison sold extremely well, moving over six million copies and going six times platinum. Creed continued to top year-end charts and was recognized as the Rock Artist of the Year at the 1998 Billboard Music Awards. My Own Prison was also the highest-selling heavy music record of 1998 on Nielsen SoundScan's Hard Music chart.[11] The band's hit song "My Own Prison" was also featured as a live performance on the charity album Live in the X Lounge in 1998. The band covered Alice Cooper's song "I'm Eighteen" for The Faculty soundtrack in 1998.[12] Critical reception toward My Own Prison was mostly favorable. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic gave it four out of five stars and said that Creed "work well within their chicken tender dinner" despite "basically [falling] into the category of post-Seattle bands who temper their grunge with a dose of Live earnestness."[13] The album lyrically deals with themes of questioning and struggling with faith and spirituality.

Aspectos conclusivos sobre la relación entre Poe y nuestra disquisición sobre el deseo: Ligeia En nuestro último escenario, tenemos la historia de un individuo que nos cuenta cómo vivió un armonioso amorío con una dama. Luego de un tiempo, ella muere precozmente, dejándolo en un estado entristecido frente al cual debe tomar decisiones radicales: la posibilidad de una relación de pareja de ese talante -espontánea, mutua, constructiva, permanente en el tiempo- es muy escasa en la condición humana. El hecho de que ésta sea interrumpida por un factor externo, la hace de un modo admirable -pues no expiró ante las tendencias al fracaso- y por otro lado bastante lamentable -ya que se ve estropeada por elementos ajenos a la voluntad de los partícipes-. Ahí tenemos un delicado ejemplo de una correlación humana provechosa, donde el deseo puede moldearse de forma benéfica, sin llevar a los estragos que hemos descrito en nuestro estudio. Tal como la identifico, esta historia, que excede en longitud a la anterior, asume cuatro partes relevantes. Primero el autor hace un tributo a ella elogiando su inigualable belleza, comparando tanto su divinidad física como su perfección erudita, con las más álgidas creaciones de la cultura universal, haciendo de esta fémina un caso tan único como exiguo: “Nunca advertía yo su aparición (…) de no ser por (…) su voz dulce (…) su mano marmórea (…) Ninguna mujer igualó (…) su rostro. Era (…) un sueño de opio, una visión aérea (…) más (…) divina que las fantasías que revoloteaban en las almas (…) de Delos” (Poe, 1956, p.162). Luego -segunda parte- se dedica a relatarnos cómo se desarrolla una rara enfermedad en ella, que la va llevando a una decadencia en la que finalmente fenece. Es como si esta fatídica situación constituyera -simbólicamente- la antítesis de la fracción inicial, donde todo era tan pulcro ahora se ve su contrario, la desgracia. Este cambio coyuntural de la trama, lo interpreto como una transición del plano de lo material y aparente a lo místico y eterno, cuestión sobre la cual es insistente Poe en su obra: “las adquisiciones de Ligeia eran gigantescas, eran asombrosas (…) tenía suficiente conciencia de su infinita superioridad para someterme con infantil confianza a su guía en el caótico mundo de la investigación metafísica, a la cual me entregué activamente durante (…) nuestro matrimonio” (Poe, 1956, p.164). 92 Posteriormente -tercera parte- el personaje detalla cómo resolvió actuar luego de la pérdida de este ser. Para superarla, después de un periodo de desolación, cambia su vida mudándose a otro lugar -se traslada de Europa continental a Inglaterra- y vinculándose con una nueva mujer. Se brinda entonces a referirnos cómo se dio esa etapa, y en especial nos pormenoriza su consagración al diseño de una mansión como forma de volver a una fantasía de su niñez, a modo de hacer catarsis a su sufrimiento, lo cual ahora cumple dada su situación emocional y pecuniaria. Allí nos provee una descripción fenomenológica del lugar que habita, como si ahora quisiera suplantar la presencia majestuosa de Ligeia con la del ataviado aposento donde mora. De esa manera, reivindica en ambos casos la transformación sublime de una estética convencional por una plutónica: inicialmente lo hace al comparar su amada con otras féminas, encontrando una distancia imponderable; en seguida se da a esta tarea al confrontar el estado inicial de la abadía, con el que logra tras su intervención, obteniendo un domicilio que inclusive destella imágenes fantasmagóricas tras la tapicería que cubría sus altas paredes, la cual se movía por efecto del viento, tal como lo ve -o cree ver- el anónimo narrador: ”a medida que el visitante cambiaba de posición en el recinto, se veía rodeado por una infinita serie de formas (…) pertenecientes a la superstición de los normandos o nacidas en los sueños culpables de los monjes” (Poe,1956, p.168). Esta fascinación por la belleza del lugar, parece ser un distractorsubstituto de su vida anterior en que examinaba la preciosidad en Ligeia: allí divisamos el abismo entre la magnificencia de la divinidad de un ser vivo frente a uno inerte. Lo que ocurre después nos demuestra cómo hay amores que simplemente no pueden ser superados o remplazados, mucho menos por algo prosaico, mostrándonos el sentido trascendental de esta trama, que surge de las profundidades del deseo y la psiquis. Así mismo, en esta fracción, el narrador nos cuenta sobre su vínculo con Rowena, una señora de origen anglosajón, el cual se dio de una manera frívola, sin mucha pasión o halago: admite que más bien fue una unión por conveniencia. El minúsculo retrato que hace de esta coyuntura hace contraste con el desarrollo extenso sobre Ligeia en la primera parte, e incluso con la descripción que plasma de la residencia en esta tercera sección, lo cual figuradamente nos revela la poca monta que representa esta relación. Señala así cómo esta situación -donde 93 termina confesando que ella no lo buscaba y que esto lo hacía feliz, aunque termina odiándola (Poe, 1838, p.32)- lo lleva de nuevo a rememorar con ímpetu a Ligeia, y a partir de ahí deviene la resolución de esta aventura poeiana. Todo este esfuerzo por huir de su situación, tanto de modo geográfico, como dedicándose a algo material y a otra persona, ocurrió para percatarse al final, que esta especie de válvula no era salida, que debía confrontar sólo y durante un debido tiempo al espectro de la fallecida antes de continuar su vida: en esa cámara nupcial, pasé con Lady de Tremaine las impías horas del primer mes de (...) matrimonio (...) sin demasiada inquietud. Que mi esposa temiera (...) mi carácter, que me huyera y me amara muy poco, no podía yo pasarlo por alto; pero me causaba más placer que otra cosa (…) Mi memoria volaba (¡ah, con qué intensa nostalgia!) hacia Ligeia, la amada, la augusta, la hermosa, la enterrada. Me embriagaba con los recuerdos de su (...) naturaleza elevada, etérea, de su amor apasionado, idólatra. (...) mi espíritu ardía (...) libremente, con más intensidad que el suyo. En la excitación de mis sueños de opio (pues me hallaba (...) aherrojado por (...) la droga) gritaba su nombre en el silencio de la noche, o (...) en los sombreados retiros de los valles, como si con esa (...) vehemencia, con la solemne pasión, con el fuego devorador de mi deseo por la desaparecida, pudiera restituirla a la senda que había abandonado —ah, ¿era posible que fuese para siempre? — en la tierra (Poe, 1956, p. 168). En una cuarte parte, el individuo se explaya en explicarnos cómo se liquida esta historia: inicialmente nos relata cómo, dada la ausencia de fluidez de su relación con Rowena, empieza a añorar a Ligeia, lo cual combina con sesiones inmoderadas de opio, reiterando un escapismo de sus circunstancias. De repente nos revela que su segunda esposa se ve bruscamente postrada, lo cual causa curiosidad y asombro al lector, cuando recuerda que también a Ligeia le sobrevino una ocurrencia similar52 -lo que resuena el fenómeno de los “dobles miméticos” desde la perspectiva girardiana. Es allí cuando inesperadamente, en la convalecencia de Rowena, se da el retorno de Ligeia. Al parecer - sin descartar otras posibilidades- por medio de una posesión espiritual del cuerpo alicaído de la primera. Mientras la mujer de ojos azules está convaleciente en la cama y el sujeto la observa, tras varios insólitos sucesos, ella se levanta y se quita los velos, y es allí cuando por alguna extraña razón, éste la ve transformada en su primer y único amor: “aquel ser amortajado avanzó osadamente, palpablemente, hasta el centro del aposento. No temblé, no me moví, pues una multitud de ideas inexpresables vinculadas con el aire, la estatura, el

Nos deja así Poe con un final fragoso y abierto a la interpretación, donde nos insta a la posibilidad de especular qué pudo exactamente suceder luego de la terminación de esta narrativa. En ella vemos irradiados los estadios más supremos del deseo respecto al fenómeno del enamoramiento y encantamiento del otro en circunstancias románticas, los cuales hacen divergencia con las anteriores lúgubres historias que estudiamos, donde los acontecimientos tendían más bien a efectos negativos que eminentes. Observamos acá cómo el deseo puede darse también en sucesos favorables, como los de la admiración, el embeleso y la entrega, sin dejar sin embargo de tener eventualmente ciertas características perjudiciales cuando efectivamente fracasa el desarrollo de las pasiones, así sea con la irrupción de la muerte (Poe, 1838, p.29): es lo único que está garantizado en nuestra vida, a lo cual debemos enfrentarnos eventualmente, para finiquitar nuestra existencia terrena, tal como nos lo indica el autor en el epitafio atribuido al filósofo inglés Joseph Glanvill (Poe, 1838, p.25). Así tenemos que esta prosa, como es propio en Poe, no nos da mucha información sobre los incidentes de la confabulación, y más bien reta al lector a completar la historia: un muy sagaz, sugestivo y original mecanismo en la evolución de la literatura que el polémico crítico encaja al mundo de la ficción. Quien se aproxima a este relato principiantemente, no tiene claro si se trata de una ilusión o de una situación verídica, tal como la describe el autor, y solo a través de lecturas sucesivas se hace más consciente de lo que realmente ocurre. Aspectos confusos allí son los siguientes: 1) si es una misma mujer o dos. 2) Si es algo que ocurre físicamente o si es una alucinación o un fenómeno paranormal: si es una visión subjetiva producida por el láudano, si realmente resucita Rowena, o si no ha muerto, si se produce una fantasmogénesis de Ligeia -independiente o no del cuerpo de Rowena- o si presenciamos una posesión preternatural de la primera esposa sobre la segunda; son muchas las posibilidades que puede uno generar de esta historia y eso la hace muy particular en el corpus de Poe. 3) También se hacen indeterminadas las circunstancias exactas de este caso, porque simultáneamente el narrador hace repetitivas referencias al trauma de la muerte, al sueño-onirismo, la depresión, a los 95 efectos de la casa donde se instala, a las consecuencias de sus estudios metafísicos, así como a los resultados del opio en su conducta. De tal modo, no estamos del todo seguros de la autenticidad de los hechos: si se deben a uno de esos componentes o a todos en conjugación; si se hace alusión a un fenómeno físico, psicológico, parasicológico o a una mezcla entre estos, lo cual hace de esta historia una de las más llamativas de Poe. De cualquier modo, en función de nuestro presente acometido, constituye un plot muy relevante desde el punto de vista del deseo, pues nos muestra las diferentes manifestaciones de esta peculiar condición del humano, que puede conllevar a una serie infinita de situaciones: en este caso en particular respecto al “amor” o desamor -al que aludimos en nuestro primer capítulo-, a una relación de pareja y a una idealización romántica e idílica de una escena concreta. En esta trama tenemos que el sujeto se topa con una extraña vivencia, en que su segunda pareja también sucumbe de forma similar a Ligeia, lanzándolo de nuevo a la reclusión y a tener que enfrentarse consigo-mismo y con el entorno, dándose cuenta que no la ha podido superar. Esto nos señala, desde la perspectiva Sartre-girardiana, cómo si un individuo no se sobrepone a un dispositivo de la compleja estructura del deseo, éste se tornará recurrente en su biografía, pidiendo más y más al sujeto, hasta que lo satisfaga o lo trascienda de alguna forma. Como lo interpreto, el detallista protagonista no estaba preparado -por más que lo intenta- para esta situación: debe vivir el duelo completo, lo cual constituye una lección para nuestra vida desde la perspectiva del deseo, tal como la hemos venido ilustrando. En esta potente narración, observamos lo afanosa que puede llegar a ser la turbación engendrada por el deseo del ser amado -como recalcaba Sartre-, la cual puede forjar inclusive estados alterados de consciencia: ensoñaciones, delirios, apariciones, espejismos, ilusiones, etcétera, como es perfectamente posible en otras situaciones de nuestra vivencia, que pueden dejar severos traumas en nuestro ser a posteridad. Este es un elemento característico de este magistral cuento, como nos revela Halliburton, donde la fantasía y lo verídico se mezclan, tanto como el sueño con la vigilia y los disparates psíquicos con la racionalidad. Al mismo tiempo, percibimos en tal situación la aparición de los mediadores a los que nuestro filósofo guía ha hecho alusión en sus análisis. Sobre ello hace referencia a la vivienda a la 96 que el narrador dedica tanto detalle hacia la mitad del relato, justo después de la muerte de Ligeia: La habitación (...) es el complemento espacial de la consciencia del narrador, quien (...) se encuentra en un constante estado de ensoñación. Encarna sus sueños en dicho aposento: este se convierte, al igual que la consciencia misma, en el medio a través del cual ve la realidad. (...) es una atmósfera que es a la vez física y mental, una (...) película a través de la cual percibe (...) su experiencia (...) es el escenario de un doble conflicto: la lucha del sueño contra la realidad, y (...) de la muerte contra la vida. El efecto de (...) variabilidad que el narrador crea allí, hace que (...) no sólo sea el sitio donde la actividad se da, sino (...) el mediador de ella. Con sus "influencias fantasmagóricas" y su "atmósfera", la habitación se hace en sí-misma participe del "horrible drama de revivificación". El ritmo de dicha lucha, análogo a los ritmos de El Corazón delator (...) es un intento de aumentar el terror, en la teoría de que si el primer ataque horroriza, el segundo, espeluzna aún más 53 (Halliburton, 1973, p.211). En este momento de nuestra meditación, podemos destacar dos relevantes aspectos que nos deja ver esta historia, frente al deseo y las relaciones interpersonales que hemos desdoblado en los capítulos anteriores. Por un lado, vemos ejemplificados los dos tipos de situaciones que pueden darse entre un par de individuos entrelazados, una sana y genuina, y una forzada y farsante. Esto recuerda la necesidad de autenticidad y conversión que Sartre y Girard señalan como ideal en las conexiones humanas, mostrándonos realmente que la predisposición es hacia al caos. Lo previo se denota precisamente por la ausencia de una fidedigna forma de desarrollar el deseo, y esto se identifica en actitudes y conductas nefastas que van desde el espectro del odio hasta el de la hipocresía, el esnobismo y el sadomasoquismo, donde los seres, en vez de superarse y contribuir a su entorno, lo que hacen es destruirse en niveles de dependencia patológicos. Esto lo vemos claramente en esta historia, donde choca la espontánea concordancia del protagonista y Ligeia, con la que sostiene con su segunda compañera: una sin efusión y sin renuncia, una de interés y

falta de consistencia trascendente; sobre ello nos confiesa el narrador:” Hablaré (…) de ese
aposento por siempre maldito, donde en un momento de enajenación conduje al altar -
como sucesora de la inolvidable Ligeia- a Lady Rowena” (Poe,1956, p.167). Con esto hago
alusión a los perfiles de dúos que no solo se entienden en términos químicos, sino también
intelectuales, exponiendo un ideal de pareja y expresando la insuficiencia de ellas, sobre
todo en los tiempos postmodernos, donde lo insulso y vano predomina notablemente sobre
lo estético y lo sensitivo-metafísico, algo que Poe promulgó. El otro módulo que vemos
aquí difundido, es la relevancia de que el deseo sea tratado como un dominio que permite
una sublimidad de lo humano, más allá de las contingencias sociales y cotidianas, y que
invita a no quedarse en lo animal o en lo ramplón, e ir más profundo en nuestra vinculación
con nosotros-mismos y los demás, como aportan Sartre con sus categorías de libertad y
autenticidad y Girard desde sus conceptos de trascendencia y conversión. Este panorama
nos lo procura Poe en esta genial obra, al representar los aspectos sensibles de la vida
como reflejo de lo divino, pues allí expone claramente su predilección por los temas
álgidos frente a los banales (Poe, 1838, p.29), dando una jerarquía al sentido de lo
omnipotente como tal vez no está presente en otra de sus historias.
Así, hemos visto como en este discurrir poeiano, se presentan ejemplos despejados
de la dinámica del deseo en situaciones-límite de la vivencia humana: esto tal como lo
advertimos desde nuestros autores de los primeros dos capítulos, más los aportes de
Halliburton y mi óptica particular. Comprendemos así, cómo este fenómeno tiene lugar, y
además cómo la ficción es un dispositivo que revela la verdad de su desenvolvimiento, del
modo que plantea Girard, y así mismo, cómo requiere de la naturalidad humana a la que
hacia llamado Sartre. En Poe vemos manifestado el deseo mimético girardiano en conjunto
con el deseo existencial sartreano: no se trata de un deseo trivial e intrascendente de índole
material, biológica o efímera, sino de uno que subyace en lo más recóndito de la realidad
humana, uno que penetra simultáneamente lo más frágil y potente de nuestra condición.
Con lo precedente conciliamos la disertación de nuestro tercer capítulo sobre esta temática
enigmática, que constituye un elemento capital de nuestra existencia tanto personal como

gregaria, y del cual podemos aprender desde nuestra reflexión filosófica, para conllevar de
forma más cadenciosa nuestra vida. Esta pretensión no solo es tendencia en Sartre y Girard
desde las concepciones morales de sus críticas visiones sobre el devenir humano, también
lo es en Poe con su intención de trascender la cotidianidad a planos excelsos. Esto es algo
que podemos lograr desde la conjunción maravillosa entre filosofía y literatura,
incorporándola a nuestra vivencia, para hacer de nuestro acontecer uno menos superfluo y
al mismo tiempo perfeccionar nuestra experiencia en este mundo. Allí -como hemos
verificado-, estas dos magnánimas disciplinas, tienen un aporte elocuente y revelador para
discrepar y descifrar, como decía Nietzsche (2003, Aforismo 3), “todo lo problemático y
extraño que hay en el existir”, a lo que agregaba: “la filosofía, tal como yo la he entendido
y vivido hasta ahora, es vida voluntaria en el hielo y en las altas montañas” (p.4).
Análogamente a esa digna consigna, nuestra intención acá, ha sido ver desde lo más
elevado de la cima y lo más profundo del océano, los sentidos del deseo.
