Leah and Miani speak with the Pacific Project Coordinator for 350.org, Joseph Sikulu about the Pacific Warriors. On the 17th of October 2014, thirty 350.org Pacific Climate Warriors blockaded the largest coal port in the world in Newcastle, Australia. They did this using traditionally made hand carved canoes to send a very clear message to Australia that the continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry was exporting destruction to the Pacific. To this day, when people refer to that canoe flotilla, they say it was like a modern day “David vs Goliath”, where a small group of Pacific Islanders went up against giant coal ships in tiny canoes. In many ways this story highlighted the strength and spirit of perseverance of many small Island nations in the face of climate change. Since then The 350.org Pacific campaign, #PrayForOurPacific, has drawn attention from across the globe with close to one hundred events registered throughout the Pacific region, Asia, the Americas and Europe. The network of Pacific Island youth, known as the Pacific Climate Warriors, who are building and growing the Pacific Climate Movement, called for faith communities to pray for the Pacific on their day of religious observance between the 3rd and 11th of September 16. The show of support through the region, and solidarity around the world, has been incredible.

Check out this news item from our friends at Crinkling News titled 'No Country No Classroom'. School can seem like a drag at times right? All the homework, assignments, having to answer questions in class. Though what if you could never go to school? What if your school no longer existed? For so many Syrian children – at least 5.6 million inside Syria and two million living as refugees outside their country – this is what they face.

Have you ever wondered about what happens to your lovely helium balloon once it slips its string and sails off into the wild blue yonder? Well scientists are finding more and more bits of balloon, and even whole ones, in the stomachs of sea birds and turtles. Once they have been swallowed and get into the gut, they can hurt, starve and even kill the animals that eat them according to marine biologist, Dr Jennifer Lavers.

Diffuse the News with Kaylee, Miani and Ruby! Access to electricity has always been an issue for many remote areas of the world and in particular for the 173 residents of Nuevo Saposoa, a tiny village in Peru in South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after a flood damaged the few power cables in the area. The villagers were forced to turn to kerosene lamps, which are not only expensive; they’re also dangerous because of the toxic fumes they emit.
Fortunately, the researchers and students at UTEC in Lima, Peru heard about their predicament and came up with an ingenious solution. They designed a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be found in abundance in the Amazonian rainforest where the village is located. Called Plantalámparas or 'lamp that runs on plant power', the Wall-E look-alike draws energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED bulb! Now we think many people got pretty upset when Pluto was demoted to dwarf status in 2006, right? And we were left with a mere 8 planets in our solar system, which really mucked up all the acronym rhymes! Well recently Planetary Astronomy Professor Mike Brown, the researcher responsible for 'killing' Pluto may have redeemed himself with the discovery of a massive ninth planet - one he believes is worthy of being added to the elite group of eight.
