Perceived Value is a podcast during which Sarah Rachel Brown interviews artists about about their careers, personal lives, failures, accomplishments, and asks the question: how do you make it all happen? They say money can't buy you happiness, but you sure do need it to pay for materials and studio space.
It's been well over a year since this interview was recorded, and it's finally seeing the light of day. Life happens, projects come up, and this wonderful conversation and a handful of others were recorded in 2023/2024 and never released. In the 81st episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown is at the Penland School of Craft during their Winter Residency program. It’s January of 2024 and Sarah has been invited to Penland as the Andrew Glasgow Resident which afforded her the time and space to record interviews with artists from all over the country. One such artist being Sarah’s friend and peer within the jewelry/metals field, Erin S. Daily.
On a snowy afternoon, the two jewelers took some time to catch up. Although Sarah was very familiar with Erin’s current business, Brooklyn Metal Works, she knew very little about her background. The two discuss Erin’s education and how she found her way to metals/jewelry, Erin’s passion for seeking and building community, her time at the The Arcosanti Project, what brought Erin to NYC, how she met her Brooklyn Metal Works co-founder, and the realities of starting a business in one of the most expensive and competitive cities in the world.

Erin S. Daily is the Co-Founder of Brooklyn Metal Works, a jewelry and metalsmithing studio, educational lab, and exhibition space dedicated to fostering creative practices and community engagement. She builds international connections among artists and makers through exhibitions, artist talks, and discussion groups while providing a dynamic studio environment for artistic growth. Erin is also deeply committed to responsible sourcing in the jewelry industry, advocating for ethical and sustainable practices. She was among the first U.S. jewelers to join the Fairmined Initiative in 2013 and continues this work as a Fairmined Gold licensee and collaborator with the Jewelry Glossary Project.
Beyond her studio practice, Erin plays an active role in the jewelry and metalsmithing field, serving on the Advisory Committee for NYC Jewelry Week and contributing to museum exhibitions like 45 Stories in Jewelry: 1947 to Now at the Museum of Arts and Design. She has taught extensively across the Northeast, including at Brooklyn Metal Works and Parsons School of Design, and her artwork has been exhibited internationally. In 2019, she co-founded Specific Gravity, a retail space supporting Brooklyn Metal Works artists while offering a platform for diverse jewelry expressions to engage local audiences. Erin holds a BFA in Metal from the University of Kansas and an MFA in Metal from SUNY New Paltz.

In the 80th episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown is in Seattle, WA over the Thanksgiving holiday. It's November of 2023, and Sarah has set up her microphones in David Chatt's guest apartment, which she's fortunate to stay in for the week. It's a charming and cozy apartment and reflects David’s eye for design and impeccable taste.
David and Sarah's friendship has evolved from benefactor/artist to friends to chosen family, and the two begin by sharing how they were brought into each other's lives. David speaks to how his creative practice began, how his parents' talents inspired him, navigating between following his passions and monetizing his abilities, the preciousness of studio time, his relationship with his things, the importance of a good editor, and a fascination for rocks.

I have spent my entire adult life sewing tiny glass beads, one to the next. I have spent as much as a year to create one piece. I am a pioneer, an inventor, and one of a few who have gained recognition for beadwork as a fine art/craft medium. My work has taken me all over the United States and abroad as a lecturer, exhibitor, and teacher, and is included in public and private collections, including a recent acquisition by The Smithsonian’s Renwick Museum. My achievements have been chronicled in books and periodicals, and in 2006 my career was recognized with a retrospective at the Bellevue Arts Museum. I have received a number of awards, including the grand prize at the 2020 Ireland Glass Biennale. In 2006 I accepted a three-year residency at Penland School of Crafts where I built a hot glass studio and studied ladle-cast glass. At the end of this residency, I returned to working with beads, but struggling with tools that were unfamiliar and allowing myself to consider other ways of working was invaluable. The time I spent living in this community and taking a break from my usual way of working, offered me an opportunity to think differently. The process of becoming adept at something, which challenged me, also made me a better teacher. I am planning to move permanently to the Penland area this spring.

In the 79th episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown takes listeners to the Penland School of Craft, where she’s participating in their Winter Residency. During the two-week residency, Sarah never missed an opportunity to enjoy a meal in the dining hall. The Pines, the Penland dining hall, has large, round tables perfect for gathering and enabling conversations over meals. Each meal is an opportunity to sit next to a stranger and potentially meet a new friend - or podcast guest.
After enjoying a few meals and conversations, Sarah asked Zahra Almajidi if she would be willing to come on the podcast. The two metalsmiths sat down to discuss Zahra’s upbringing and why her family immigrated to the United States, the benefits of living with your parents while going to college, and if it’s possible to appropriate a culture that is your own while living in the diaspora.

Zahra Almajidi is a visual artist and metalsmith raised and based in Detroit, MI. Utilizing both traditional metalsmithing techniques and CAD/CAM processes, her work explores the ways in which objects and adornment allow displaced people to continue to uphold and practice their craft traditions while living in the diaspora.
She has worked at several art fabrication spaces in Metro Detroit including Wayne State University where she received her BFA in Metalsmithing, Lawrence Technological University where she briefly served as shop co-manager, and Cranbrook Academy of Art where she received her MFA in Metalsmithing and was awarded the Cranbrook Art Director’s fellowship and the Director’s Award.
She has taken part in the 2021 Incubator Residency program at Talking Dolls Detroit, the Artist + Residents Program at the Arab American National Museum in 2021, and the Winter Residency program at Penland School of Craft in 2024. She’s also dedicated to maintaining an active studio practice, and regularly exhibits work. She is currently the Central Materials Lab Coordinator at Cranbrook Academy of Art as well as anadjunct instructor at Wayne State University.

In the 78th episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown takes listeners to the *Penland School of Craft, where she’s participating in their Winter Residency*. Leading up to the residency, Sarah had heard from a few fellow artists attending, but overall, she had no idea who she would cross paths with. To her delight, the residency allowed her to meet many artists she’s admired from afar. Among them is the guest for this episode, Lauren Kalman, who has been on Sarah’s interview wishlist for some time. After sharing a few meals, Sarah asked for an interview.
The two women sat down to discuss how Lauren unexpectedly got her first teaching position, the art of negotiation and why it’s a crucial skill, how to sell work when your work is challenging to sell, and how an artist’s work is not always representative of their personality.

Lauren Kalman is a visual artist based in Detroit whose practice is rooted in craft, sculpture, video, photography, and performance. She completed her PhD in Practice-led Research from the School of Art and Design at the Australian National University. She earned an MFA in Art and Technology from Ohio State University and a BFA with a focus in Metals from Massachusetts College of Art.
Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Museum of Arts and Design, Museum of Contemporary Craft, Cranbrook Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum Houston, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Mint Museum, World Art Museum in Beijing, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris among others. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Françoise van den Bosch Foundation at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Museum of Arts and Design, and the Korean Ceramics Foundation. In 2020 she received the Françoise van den Bosch Award for her career’s impact on the jewelry field; in 2022, she received the Raphael Founders Prize in Glass from Contemporary for Craft; and in 2023 she was named a Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow.
She is a dedicated educator and is currently a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at Wayne State University in Detroit.

In the 77th episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown is at the Penland School of Craft during their Winter Residency this past January. Sarah was awarded the Andrew Glasgow Residency, which provides emerging and established writers, scholars, curators, and storytellers in all mediums with the freedom to write stories and conduct research and interviews on topics designed to advance the field of craft. Sarah took advantage of being surrounded by artists from all over the country and recorded 13 interviews in total. Sarah was delighted to learn that her friend Adam Grinovich had been awarded a winter residency so the two made a plan to connect while their paths crossed at Penland.
At the time of this recording, Adam and his wife, Annika Pettersson, who is also a jeweler, were preparing to move to Penland in a few months to begin a one-year residency. The two jewelers sat down to discuss why Adam chose to transition out of his full-time teaching position at SCAD Savannah, how he navigated the logistics of living and studying abroad, and what he hopes his time as a Penland Resident Artist will bring.

Adam Grinovich was born in Boston Massachusetts USA and received his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art in the Jewelry and Metalsmithing program. After working in the CAD/CAM industry for 2 years he continued his studies, receiving an MFA in jewelry from Konstfack University in Stockholm Sweden studying under professors Ruudt Peters and Karen Pontoppidan.
Grinovich’s career in jewelry is punctuated by travel and exchange. He has assisted in the studios of prominent artists and designers such as Christoph Zellwegger in Zurich, Switzerland and Ted Noten in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He has an extensive list of international exhibitions and inclusion in private and public collections.
In addition to his independent studio career Grinovich is a founding member of the experimental jewelry collective A5 , a member of the design collective Critical +.
The work of Adam Grinovich deals with the themes of glamour, worth, value, technology, and adornment. His work crystalizes moments into microcosms, investigates the sublime qualities of craft, and collects simple gestures into complex expressions.
In addition to craft, art, and design, Grinovich is an educator, working for 5 years as a Professor of Jewelry at Savannah College of Art and Design. Currently he is a resident artist at the Penland School of Crafts in NC, USA.

The fourth and final Distinguished Fellow to be featured is Shani Richards, a metalsmith from Akron, Ohio. The two metalsmiths sat down and discussed what Shani was focusing on during her time at the Penland Winter Residency. Shani being no stranger to fellowships or residencies, their conversation evolved into discussing the pros and cons of pursuing a career as a full-time artist, how Shani is navigating her current nomadic lifestyle, and what she hopes for in her future.

The two artists sat down and discussed Rich’s experience as a Division 1 College Basketball player, his career in education before pottery, the importance of dreaming big, and his current dreams. In this important conversation, Rich also shares his lived experience of being black in predominately white spaces- the fears that can bring, and how Rich documents and shares his experiences within the ceramic and craft communities in hopes of inspiring the next generation of black makers.

Although Sarah and Folayemi live in the same city, their paths did not cross until the Penland Winter Residency. As the two women began their discussion, Folayemi casually disclosed that she was in the process of fulfilling her dream of owning a building. The two artists discuss the details of Folayemi purchasing her first building, the importance of prioritizing rest as a working artist, and what Folayemi is focused on during her time at the Penland Winter Residency.

The first Distinguished Fellow to be featured is Ada del Pilar Ortiz Berríos, a visual artist and educator based in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. This past November, Sarah traveled to San Juan, PR, for the first time and, while there, visited the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico. At this museum, she came across Ada’s work, not knowing that she would have the chance to interview her two months later. The two artists sat down to discuss Ada’s life in Puerto Rico, the residencies Ada has completed, and what she is focusing on during her time at Penland.

Ada del Pilar Ortiz Berríos (b.1995 Barranquitas, Puerto Rico) is a visual artist and educator. Her artistic practice interacts with sculptural processes that explore issues within the architectural condition, the meaning of home, the remains of built space and their relationship with memory. Through her work she reflects on how these concepts shape us in the place we inhabit from its physicality and the one that resides in us from memory -both concrete and malleable- as part of our formation, establishing a link between the reality of a place and the imagined one. Ada del Pilar obtained her BFA with a concentration in Painting from the School of Fine Arts and Design of Puerto Rico in 2018. Her work has been presented individually and collectively in spaces such as the Arsenal de la Puntilla Museum, El Kilómetro Gallery, Embajada Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico and the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center in New York, among others. She has participated in residencies including Área: Programa de Residencias (2019), “La Práctica” interdisciplinary program at Beta Local (2019), The Studios at MASS MoCA, Puerto Rico Artist Fellowship (2023) and Penland School of Crafts Winter Residency (2024). Her work has been commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico under the "MAC en el Barrio" program. Ada’s work has been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and CATAPULT: "A Caribbean Arts Grant" programme. She currently lives and works in Bayamón, Puerto Rico as an artist in residency in "Proyecto Casitas Artistas Residentes" of this municipality.

In the coming 4 episodes of the podcast, host Sarah Rachel Brown interviews distinguished fellows of the Penland Winter Residency. These interviews were recorded in January 2024 as part of Sarah’s Andrew Glasgow Residency. This Glasgow residency provides emerging and established writers, scholars, curators, and storytellers in all mediums with the freedom to write stories and conduct research and interviews on topics designed to advance the field of craft.
With the support of the Penland School of Craft, this special series aims to highlight what the Penland Winter Residency is and what it means to be a distinguished fellow. Through one-on-one interviews with select fellows, Sarah gives insight into what this experience entailed and how this opportunity impacted each artist’s current studio practice.

In the 71st episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown is in Asheville, NC. In January of 2023, Sarah was making the drive from Florida to Pennsylvania and planned her trip around the opportunity to interview craft historian Andrew Glasgow. The two were introduced the previous summer while at the Penland School of Craft, and Sarah, having known of Andrew’s vast career within the craft community, was thrilled when he agreed to an interview.
The two craft appreciators sat down in Andrew’s mid-century modern home to discuss how the Alabama native went from thinking he’d be a dentist to being an executive director of a non-profit in New York City. A year into his position as the executive director of the American Craft Council, Andrew was diagnosed with Lymphoma, and he shares with Sarah how his mindset, hope, and being his own advocate helped him through the estimated 806+ drug infusions and being declared cancer-free in 2013.

In the 70th episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown is in Seattle, WA, spending the Thanksgiving holiday with her older brother, Benton Brown. For years, the two have talked about recording an interview, and they are finally in the same place and on the same page.
In recent years, Sarah and Ben have put in the effort to strengthen their relationship. Raised primarily separately, Ben with their father in Oklahoma and Sarah with their mother in Iowa, the two siblings are still learning who each other has become in adulthood. However, regardless of their separate upbringings in very different environments, they have many talents and passions in common- an example of the long-standing debate of nature vs. nurture.
The two siblings discuss how Ben became a multi-talented artist and graphic designer, the importance of not letting your loyalty get in the way of your growth, finding a job when you don’t expect it, and being the one who’s better.

Sarah reconnected with her friend and creative business coach, Gwynne Rukenbrod Smith, whom she met years ago when Gwynne was the executive director of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, and Sarah was a new member attending her first SNAG conference.

In the 66th episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown is in the midst of a roadtrip and makes a stop in Atlanta, GA to interview her friend Ken Oriole. Sarah and Ken first met in New York City through mutual friends and his job as a sound engineer has always fascinated her. In the past year Ken had moved to Atlanta and since Sarah was driving through, this was the perfect opportunity to learn more about what Ken’s job entails.
The two friends sat down to discuss how Ken got his start as a sound engineer, how someone builds connections with this type of work, the difference between a producer and an engineer, and how Ken navigates billing his projects and re-evaluating the value of his time.

Ken Oriole is a Grammy winning recording engineer who has teamed up with many of the top artists and producers in the industry, and has worked at some of the world’s most renowned studios. Ken is known for his vast technical expertise, musical comprehension, and almost two decades of experience working across multiple genres and in a variety of roles.
After relocating to New York in 2017, he branched out to new artists and genres. In 2022 he won a Grammy for “Album of the Year” for recording and engineering on Jon Batiste’s “We Are.” Along the way, Ken has engineered at many world-famous facilities, including Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La in Malibu, CA and Electric Lady Studios in New York.
Currently based back in Atlanta, Ken continues to work with major clients and travels to New York and LA often.

the 65th episode of Perceived Value host Sarah Rachel Brown connects remotely with Namita Gupta Wiggers. Namita is a writer, educator, and curator based in Portland, OR that Sarah met in Chicago during a conference in 2019. Since that time, Sarah has followed Namita’s work with the Critical Craft Forum and the MA in Critical Craft Studies program at Warren Wilson College.
Having learned that the Critical Craft Studies program would be closing, Sarah reached to ask if Namita would share what her role was as Director of the program and what this closure means for both her and the students. The conversation gives insight as how the program was created, the intention behind the curriculum, the importance of understanding budgets, and how the college is navigating the logistics of the closure.

Namita Gupta Wiggers is a writer, educator, and curator based in Portland, OR. Wiggers serves as the founding director of the MA in Critical Craft Studies at Warren Wilson College, the first and only low-residency program focused on craft histories and theory. She co-founded Critical Craft Forum, an online and onsite platform for dialogue and exchange including projects such as annual College Art Association Conference sessions from 2009-2019. Wiggers served as curator and then chief curator and director of Museum of Contemporary Craft/PNCA from 2004–14. Prior experiences as a museum educator, design researcher, studio jeweler, and life as an American of South Asian heritage also shape her research and writing on craft and culture.

Christina Grace is the Founder and Designer of TIN HAUS, a contemporary fine jewelry brand based in Los Angeles. With a core mission for sustainability, Christina blends her educational and fine arts background to inform the technical side of her handcrafted designs. The Fulcrum Project residency brought together active participants in the craftscape with eight residents who have been made vulnerable due to the high-risk they experience resulting from poverty and other structural forms of oppression and repression further emphasized due to the pandemic. With this project, the aim is to support residents with professional development as well as exposing residents to the multiplicity of possibilities that exist within a craft discourse. The outcome will be to give residents better tools and information on opportunities and structures to support young careers, while providing unrestricted financial support. Building upon the expertise and pool of knowledge of the presenters, the Fulcrum Project residency provides residents with diverse and valuable resources, varying from practical and foundational proffesionalization strategies - such as bio, cv writing, portfolio compiling,... -, to more advanced conceptual discussions. As a result, residents gain [or improve existing] skills with which they will be able to use or subvert as they will have gained a better understanding of possibilities to make decisions with more rounded understanding of unconventional possibilities and paths to build a practice. This format is inspired by Felipe Castelblanco’s parasitic university program, and shares an interest in using institutional resources to better a community at large.

As the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Dr. Emily Stoehrer is an international presence in the jewelry field.At the MFA Emily oversees a collection that spans 6,000 years and includes more than 22,000 objects—highlights include ancient jewelry and the Daphne Farago Collection of contemporary jewelry. She has curated exhibitions and written on various aspects of adornment. Most recently she organized the exhibition “Boston Made: Arts & Crafts Jewelry and Metalwork” and contributed to the related publication. Additionally, over the last decade, she has taught and lectured widely on a on jewelry, fashion, and design-related topics. A leader in the field, Emily is a member of the Board of Directors for the Society of North American Goldsmiths, and serves as the spokesperson on the jewelry vetting committee of all three of The European Fine Art Fairs. She holds a PhD in Humanities from Salve Regina University and a Master of Arts in Fashion & Textile Studies from the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Jaydan was born into a family of fourth generation tombstone makers in California. Most of his childhood was largely spent at the family business, which doubled as a rental storage space; where he would rummage through other peoples objects, and listen to families making arrangements for their loved ones. It is these experiences that made him value the heirlooms and objects we choose to use as markers for significant moments.
His career began as an undergraduate student at California College of the Arts, in Oakland and received his MFA and MA from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Jaydan has furthered his career through generous opportunities as an artist in residence at Penland School of Crafts, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and a Fountainhead Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth Universities Craft/Material Studies Program. He has received grants through the American Craft Councils Emerging Voices Program, North Carolina Arts Fellowship, and the Peter S. Reed Foundation. He has shown in recent exhibitions at Design/Miami (FL), Basel (SWI), Cheongju Craft Biennale (South Korea), Museum of Craft and Design (CA), Racine Art Museum (WI), Fuller Craft Museum (MA), and the Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design (NC). He has also held teaching appointments at Rhode Island School of Design, Virginia Commonwealth University in the Craft Materials Studies Program, California College of the Arts, and Penland School of Crafts.

Adriane Dalton is an artist, writer, and educator based in Richmond, Virginia. She is the Editor of Metalsmith and Metalsmith Tech magazines, and the annual Jewelry and Metals Survey (JaMS) published by the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG). She received her MA in History of Decorative Arts and Design (now the History of Design and Curatorial Studies) from Parsons The New School for Design in partnership with the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and her BFA in Craft & Material Studies from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
She was formerly the Assistant Curator and Exhibitions Manager at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) in Logan, Utah where she co-curated ARTsySTEM: The Changing Climate of the Arts and Sciences andtaught History of American Studio Craft, among many other curatorial and educational projects. She is a past contributor to Art Jewelry Forum and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Object of the Day blog.
Over the past fifteen years, her studio practice has evolved from traditional metalsmithing and enameling techniques to incorporate alternative and recycled materials. Lately, she is using disused and discarded materials to engage with intersections of labor, class, gender, and consumption. She brings her appreciation for creative reuse into her role as lead instructor for Teen Stylin’—a twelve-week wearable arts program at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She also teaches recycled materials jewelry and enameling at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, and is a past Program Leader at ART 180, a non-profit providing art-related programming for young people in Richmond.

Kathleen Kennedy and Susie Ganch were invited to curate Quirk Gallery’s annual Sparkle Plenty, an annual holiday show dedicated to contemporary jewelry.

Ralph Darden is a musician, DJ and composer based in Chicago.
The self taught, multi instrumentalist, grew up in Philadelphia, where he graduated from the High School for Creative and Performing Arts. He spent his formative years playing in several punk bands (Random Children, Franklin, AM/FM), completing a series of self-booked nation wide tours and releasing several albums on various independent record labels. All in the pre-internet world of the early 90s.
In 2005 he formed his dub infused, post punk band The Jai Alai Savant. He wrote and produced the band's album Flight Of The Bass Delegate and spent the next few years touring and performing both domestically & abroad. He currently plays guitar and sings backing vocals with Ted Leo & The Pharmacists.
Contiguously, his DJ career began in the late 90s. Initially guided by an obsession with the intersectionality of punk, reggae, hip hop and electronic dance music, Ralph took on the moniker DJ Major Taylor,(a reference to his days a a cyclist), throwing a series of successful genre bending dance parties. Ralph established himself as a adept open format turntablst and a pioneering figure in the burgeoning Philadelphia nightlife scene of the early 2000’s. According to Diplo “Wow ... well ... Major Taylor (Ralph) was one of the djs/musicians in Philly that inspired Hollertronix ... he's like one of the true sources of that party". Eventually he moved to Chicago, and in 2015 started his DJ company November Electric which focuses on pairing stylistically similar DJs with high end events like weddings, fashion shows, and wrap parties for film and tv productions. He has since dj'd wrap events for Ron Howard, Vince Vaughn, Steven Sodoberg and John C Riley. He has toured the globe spinning festivals and nightclubs. He has DJ'd over 150 weddings including destination weddings in Cambodia and Melbourne, Australia.
In 2008 he composed music for the independent film Polish Bar, and has since composed for several other independent films, commercials and television productions - including the short lived Comcast kids show, Gross World, in which he was a featured character. In 2012 he scored an episode of the animated series Happy Tree Friends, a collaborative effort directed by high school friend Rob Shaw. The pair went on to collaborate on other projects including a Transformers Toy Commercial for Hasbro. They are currently working their music project The Puny Humans. Ralph continues composing.
JB Jones, Co-founder, NYC Jewelry Week
JB Jones began her career as a Design Director and Fashion Editor in Los Angeles, CA. In 2008, JB switched gears and launched The Site Unscene, a street art gallery and artists’ platform. She curated the first West Coast exhibition of the NYC based graffiti crew TC-5, which included the work of Doze Green and Lady Pink, and was a leader in helping to establish street art as a legitimate force in the LA gallery scene. Upon moving to NYC in 2014, JB returned to fashion in a retail development capacity with a focus on jewelry. She co-curated the first street art x art jewelry exhibition, PLACEMENT, with Bella Neyman. In 2017 the duo launched a digital contemporary jewelry platform of the same name designed to promote the concept of “wearing your art.” Her work has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, WWD, Juxtapoz, Obey, Work magazine, and more. She currently resides in Manhattan.

Susie Ganch is an artist and educator living in Richmond, VA where she is Interim Chair for the Department of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. She received her MFA from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Adia Sykes is a Chicago-based curator, arts administrator, and graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) with a Masters of Arts from the Department of Arts Administration and Policy. She has a BA in Anthropology from the University of Chicago (2016) with a focus on material culture and museums. Her current research interests include examining the history and potential of curatorial practice as an advocacy tool for racial equity in the arts and racial and gendered identities explored in the visual and performative practices of emerging artists. Her Masters thesis focused on formations of self-organized networks of support that exist to sustain the practices of historically marginalized artist communities and maps this contemporary ecosystem of support. Her curatorial work has been exhibited at The Sullivan Galleries, Woman Made Gallery, the Chicago Mayor’s Office, and ACRE Projects.

Viviana established her point of view in the realm of fine jewelry after studying conceptual design at the School of the Art Institute. She continued her education in metalsmithing at Columbia College while simultaneously working under both fine jewelers and contemporary art jewelry makers. She’s now been working in design under her own name for over 10 years, creating custom fine jewelry, interiors, and decorative objects.
Viviana is known for her intricate metalwork, modern bridal styles, and one-of-a-kind pieces featuring unexpected hues, antique stones, and historical reference. Borrowing from the worlds of fine art, cultural adornment, and design, her custom work appeals to the expressiveand open-minded individual— those who value individuality, creative collaboration, and are unafraid to stand out.

In the 37th episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown travels to NYC to visit the Museum of Arts and Design to see their current exhibition Non-Stick Nostalgia: Y2K Retrofuturism in Contemporary Jewelry. The exhibition, which is on display through July 21st, was curated by Kellie Riggs, a contemporary jeweler, writer, and woman known for getting things done.
Having previously connected during Munich Jewellery Week, the two woman sat down to discuss how Kellie came to be a guest curator for the MAD, what it means to be a curator with an institution of this size, and being a bad to student to get things done.

Lucy Louise Derickson is a metalsmith and educator currently residing in Washington DC. She received her BFA in Jewelry/Metalsmithing and Teaching Certification from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After spending 2 years teaching k-12 Art Education, and receiving Teacher of the Year from the Greenfield Chamber of Commerce, she moved to Richmond to earn her MFA in Craft and Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Lucy is currently Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Jewelry/Metalsmithing and Crafts Area at Montgomery College, Maryland. Lucy is a board member of the non-profit organization Ethical Metalsmiths, where she works as facilitator to EM Students.

In the second bonus episode of Perceived Value, host Sarah Rachel Brown has been invited to the University of Arkansas at Littlerock as a visiting artist to give a lecture and teach a workshop.
In her workshop entitled, All Work Is Studio Work, Sarah covers the basics of podcasting and creating content.
The intention of the workshop was to give the students the students the opportunity and know-how to create their own podcast episode. In the end, it was decided that one day was not enough time for such an endeavor and instead, each participant chose the topic for their short, one-on-one interview with Sarah.
This bonus episode is the result of those interviews recorded on March 9th at the University of Arkansas at Littlerock.

Mike Rossi is the principal of Rossi Metal Design based in Philadelphia,
specializing in unique architectural works and sculpture. Born in Pontiac, Michigan,
he has a BFA in Blacksmithing from Northern Michigan University, and an MFA in
Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has exhibited nationally and
internationally, currently in “Meta-Formation” at Appalachian Center for Craft and
in “40 under 40: the Next Generation of American Metal Artists” at the National
Ornamental Metals Museum in Memphis. He has taught at Bryn Athyn College,
Kalamazoo College, Ox-Bow School of Art, Penland School of Craft, and Haystack
Mountain School of Craft. He’s got 2 cats.

About the curators:
Manuela Jimenez and Kendra Pariseault studied together at the Rhode Island School of Design and are both interested in exploring themes regarding social media and how it influences our work and our public versus private lives. They are curious about how exposing one’s process through social media outlets can inform an artist’s work. Throughout their careers, Manuela and Kendra have worked in both the commercial jewelry industry as well as in the fine arts world and have seen the spectrum of where these two fields connect and differ. Within this experience they have encountered the many ways in which the public perceives the process of the handmade versus the manufactured, the curiosity towards both processes, and the ways in which social media is now exposing these previous unknowns. Through #fail #success they would like to bring together artists who are using social media as a platform to celebrate their process of making.

Michael Nashef has earned his B.F.A. in Metals/Jewelry Design from Kendall College of Art and Design. Throughout his career, Michael Nashef has managed a jewelry store, worked as a CAD designer, and launched his fine jewelry company Intersecting Hearts, during which he taught as an adjunct teacher, where he found his passion for teaching and academia, that led him to pursue his M.F.A. in 3D studies from Bowling Green State University. Although Liz Kantner has always had a passion for jewelry, she began her career as a Content Manager for big consumer brands. She made the switch to the jewelry industry when she had the opportunity to work as Marketing Manager for Todd Reed. During her time there she learned many aspects of the fine jewelry industry including public relations, advertising, sales and trade shows. Halstead supplies jewelry designers around the globe with chain, metals and findings for their studios. She is the founder of the Halstead Grant and a passionate advocate for bringing business skills to jewelers. She has an MBA, a Masters of International Management, and a lifetime of experience in the jewelry world. Together with the talented team at Halstead, Hilary works on many programs for jewelers including the Halstead Design Challenge with SNAG and other grassroots sponsorships to support the jewelry artist community at the local and regional level.

Georgina Trevino is a contemporary jeweler from Tijuana, Mexico currently living in San Diego, California. She obtained a Bachelors Degree in Applied Design with an emphasis in Jewelry Making from San Diego State University in 2014.
Her recent work is an extension of her work by paying closer attention to color pattern and shape in relation to modern architecture and contemporary art movements she is surrounded by now. She uses techniques and materials like enameling, found objects, polymer clay, powder coating,cement and other fun color techniques that relate to her cultural and architectural background.

Bella Neyman is the co-founder of New York City Jewelry Week. She is also an independent curator and journalist specializing in contemporary jewelry. Since graduating with a Master’s Degree in Decorative Arts and Design History from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum & Parsons, The New School for Design in 2008, she has worked for some of New York City’s leading design galleries. For the last three years, she was the Director of New York’s only contemporary jewelry gallery. In addition to this, in 2014, along with Ruta Reifen, Bella founded Platforma, a contemporary jewelry-focused initiative whose exhibitions have been on view in the U.S. and Europe. Emily Cobb is a jewelry designer and maker utilizing digital technology and traditional fabrication techniques to make her work. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Metals/Jewelry/CAD-CAM from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. In addition to a solo exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, she has exhibited at museums such as the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, the Racine Art Museum, and the Bellevue Arts Museum. Her work has been featured on the cover of Metalsmith Magazine and in publications such as Digital Handmade: Craftsmanship in the New Industrial Revolution. Emily is a founding member of JV Collective, a collaborative jewelry group, based in South Philadelphia. In 2017, she accepted a full-time assistant professor position in Jewelry and Small Metals at Humboldt State University in California.

Erica Bello studied metals/jewelry design at the Rochester Institute of Technology's School for American Crafts where she received her BFA. In 2014 Bello won the Halstead Grant for emerging artists and in 2017 she was chosen to speak at the 46th annual Society of North American Goldsmiths conference as an Early Career Artist. In addition to working as a studio jeweler Erica Bello holds a position as studio manager at the Baltimore Jewelry Center and teaches classes on metalsmithing and jewelry design. April Wood is a metalsmith living and working in Baltimore, MD. She is a co-founder of the Baltimore Jewelry Center, a metals + jewelry community education space in Baltimore city, where she is Studio Manager, Exhibitions Director, and an Instructor. She received her BFA in Studio Art, concentrating in Metals/Jewelry from Texas State University – San Marcos and her MFA from Towson University. Shane Prada is the Director of the Baltimore Jewelry Center. Prior to her work at the Baltimore Jewelry Center, Shane was an educator and school leader in Baltimore for 12 years. She came to Baltimore in 2004 as a Teach For America corps member. After receiving her Master of Arts in Teaching from JHU in 2006 and completing her TFA tenure, she helped start the Green School of Baltimore, one of the first charter schools in Baltimore city. In 2010, Shane began taking evening classes at MICA’s Jewelry Center, then a continuing studies program. She fell in love with art jewelry and metalsmithing and the community fostered by the Jewelry Center. In the fall of 2012, MICA announced that it would discontinue the 22-year old Jewelry Center program in 2014. In the spring of 2013, Shane took the lead of a group of core MICA faculty and students who sought to create a new organization that would continue the legacy of the MICA Jewelry Center. She has held the role of director of the Baltimore Jewelry Center since the organization opened in June 2014. In addition to making jewelry and small sculpture whenever she can, Shane is an avid equestrian and bibliophile.

I create custom jewelry and my own line of engagement rings and wedding bands from recycled precious metals and ethically sourced gemstones. I launched my first jewelry line in San Diego in 2008, after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University and earning a 2-year Core Fellow residency at Penland School of Crafts. I moved to the Forgotten Coast in 2016 and I'm preparing to open a showroom/studio where I can consult with clients.

Aurélie Guillaume, born in Montréal, Québec (1990) is a French Canadian jeweler, enamelist and illustrator. Formally trained in the arts of jewelry and metalsmithing at the École de Joaillerie de Montréal, and at NSCAD University in Canada, Guillaume’s work have since been acquired for the permanent collections of the Enamel Arts Foundation in Los Angeles and the Museum of Art and Design (MAD Museum) in New York, and have been featured in Metalsmith Magazine (Vol.36/No.5/2016). Her work has been exhibited throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Guillaume presented her first solo show in the United States at Reinstein & Ross Gallery in NYC, 2017. Most recently she has been selected as finalist for the Art Jewelry Forum Emerging Artist Award. She is no working and living in Montréal, Canada.

Munich Jewellery Week is an independent initiative that supports and communicates the yearly citywide jewellery exhibitions running parallel to Handwerk & Design expo, and its historic jewellery exhibitions: Meister der Moderne, Schmuck and Talente.
13 – 17 March 2019, Munich Jewellery Week will showcase avant-garde contemporary jewellery by both established and up-and-coming designers from all over the world. This yearly gathering is by far the most significant event on contemporary jewellery’s calendar; it’s a unique phenomenon which plays a pacemaking role in the contemporary jewellery field.
Hundreds of makers, students, educators and collectors come from all over the world to be inspired by MJW’s diverse programme that ranges from artist-run exhibitions, book launches and lectures, to performances, mobile presentations and parties.
Over the past decade, the gradual and organic expansion of the independent city exhibitions has boomed to a remarkable 100+ initiatives, establishing a self-ruled dynamic community of local and international artists.
Title Munich Jewellery Week was coined in 2015 by Current Obsession, to give a name to this extraordinary collective effort, and associate it to other professional fashion and design weeks around the world.
Our aim is to represent the multitude of these impressive independent events as a whole, to give them a recognisable visual identity and to offer clear information to new participants, press and international visitors.

Marianne Dages is a Philadelphia based artist investigating the crossroads between image, language, and thought. Her work is held in public collections including the MOMA Library, Yale University Library, and SAIC Chicago. She was awarded the two-year Core Fellowship at Penland School of Crafts, where she studied bookbinding and letterpress printing. In 2015, she had a solo exhibition at Print Gallery Tokyo. She's been an artist in residence at Herhusid in Iceland, Beisinghoff Printmaking Residency in Germany, and the Book Arts Center at Wells College. Marianne also teaches letterpress and bookbinding and publishes artists’ books under the name Huldra Press. She prints on a Vandercook No. 4 named Egon.

Bryan Parnham studied at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. His practice brought him to Penland School of Crafts where he attended workshops before being awarded a place in the Core Fellowship Program. During the two-year fellowship, he developed a line of jewelry that focused on non-traditional etching techniques and surface design revolving around his work as a two dimensional artist. His metalwork varies from collections of jewelry to singular, stand out studio pieces. The unique studio work embraces his diverse disciplines outside of metals including drawing, painting, and photography.

Nick DeFord is an artist, educator, and arts administrator who resides in Knoxville, TN. He received his MFA from Arizona State University, and a MS and BFA from the University of Tennessee. He exhibits nationally, with recent exhibitions at the Coastal Carolina University, The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, University of Mississippi, Lindenwood University and this spring in 2018 at East Tennessee State University. He has had artwork or writing published in Surface Design Journal, Elephant Magazine, Hayden Ferry Review, and Willow Springs. Currently, Nick is the Program Director at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee, and works on his fiber art practice from his home studio.

Jason Bige Burnett graduated from Western Kentucky University with a BFA in ceramics and BA’s in both printmaking and graphic design. Burnett continued his education and studies as a core fellowship student at Penland School of Crafts (NC), and as an Artist-In-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (TN). Since then he has exhibited nationally, been featured in Ceramics Monthly, American Craft Magazine, and he's the author of Graphic Clay: Ceramic Surfaces and Printed Image Transfer Techniques (Lark Books, 2015). Burnett currently lives and works from his home studio in Louisville, Kentucky.

Perceived Value host Sarah Rachel Brown sits down with Philadelphia-based contemporary jeweler and metalsmith Mallory Weston. The two women pop a bottle of champagne and discuss what sparked Mallory's interest in metals, the joys of working at a bowling alley, and how Ms. Weston came to be involved in the international art jewelry community.
Mallory Weston is an artist currently living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Her work involves a marriage between traditional jewelry techniques and textile techniques and she creates large-scale wearable pieces that allow metal to move with the fluidity of fabric. She recently received her MFA in Jewelry + Metalsmithing from Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 2013. Mallory currently works as a professor of Jewelry and Metals at several Philadelphia area colleges and universities. In addition to her career as an educator, she maintains an active studio practice as a member of the JV Collective, a group of five female art jewelers. Her work was most recently featured in the solo exhibitions KNOCK OFF at Platina Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden and Of Ophidia at Sienna Patti Contemporary in the United States. She is an engaged participant in the global art jewelry community, regularly participating in group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. In the spring of 2016 she was selected as an artist in residence with the Artist Studios program at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. Her work can be found in the permanent collection of the CODA Museum and the Stedelijk Museum s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.

In the seventh episode of Perceived Value host Sarah Rachel Brown sits down with the jewelry blogger A Thousand Facets. Sarah sits down with this social media maven to discuss how one becomes a jewelry blogger, if there is a paycheck involved, and the importance of saying please and thank-you.
Since 2010, A Thousand Facets has showcased the work of over 1,400 jewelry designers from around the world. Its mission: to give small, independent designers in the different facets of jewelry design (contemporary, fine, artisan etc.) a platform to showcase their work. Most of these designers are one-person shops. There are many talented individuals who lack a budget for marketing, so I offer them a place to display their work at no cost. Building a bridge between the contemporary, fine, and artisan world is very important to A Thousand Facets. Each segment of the jewelry world is compartmentalized and designers don’t know about it each other’s work. There’s so much they can learn from each other while creating a thriving community.

She is a contributing editor at The Fanzine alongside Blake Butler, and a columnist at Philadelphia Weekly. Her work has been translated into French by Editions Do. She has presented work at the Society for the Study of American Writers, and was an attendee of the Gullkistan Artist Residency in Iceland.

In the fifth episode of Perceived Value host Sarah Rachel Brown sits down with contemporary jeweler Emily Shaffer. This past August Emily applied for the Halstead Grant and placed as a Top Five Finalist. Halstead is a full service jewelry supply firm that was launched in 1973 and is still family owned and operated. As a company Halstead strives to support small business and emerging artists; most notably through their annual Halstead Grant.
Each year one artist is selected as the winner and ten other artists are announced as either Top Five Finalists or Top Ten Finalists. Sarah sits down with Emily to discuss what the Halstead Grant is, what the application entails, and what one can gain beyond the monetary awards.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Emily received her B.F.A and B.S. from Kutztown University in 2014. Going to school within short distances of New York City and Philadelphia exposed her to contemporary art and fashion. Post graduation, she moved to Maine for a one year internship with practicing studio jeweler, Cara Romano. She since has made a home in Maine to begin her career creating wearable, contemporary jewelry. Living in rural Maine inspires her sense of resourcefulness and independence, and a constant drive to create. Her current focus is to create jewelry line that is clean, modern and versatile, while seeking compositions of line and negative space.

Sarah sits down with the secretary of the Metals Collective, Shelby Goldsmith. The two women discuss how the collective came to be, what it takes to be a member, and the value of creating your own community.
As a visual artist, Sarah understands the value of having high quality images of her work. The two artists sit down to discuss how Drew came to be a photographer, his mixed bag of jobs, and his affiliation with Maine Media Workshops + College. Hiring a photographer can be intimidating and expensive; here Sarah seeks perspective from behind the lens.
In June Sarah received the news that she has been accepted as an Emerging Artist for this year's PMA Craft Show taking place November 9-12th. This will be Sarah's first craft show experience; she's a bit overwhelmed and is hoping Rea can clarify a few details for her.
The two jewelers discuss what exactly a craft show is, why they chose to apply, and how much money Sarah can plan on investing into this experience. Doing shows of this caliber is expensive - but the payoff can go far beyond one's bank account.
**Corrections: The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is a project of the Women’s Committee; all proceeds benefit the museum. Dates of this year’s show were incorrectly stated, the show runs from November 9th through the 12th – not the 17th. Lastly, Prize winners receive $1,000, a prize ribbon to hang in their booth and the option to have a place in the show the following year. Those artists still pay the application fee and a booth fee.
