I've often said that being a "high achiever" isn't a compliment, because it often means you seek certificate after certificate - almost to find a sense of relief of attaining something, but no real fundamental joy, nor sometimes appreciation of nor learning from the process.  I reflect on my process from not being a great swimmer to...NOT doing the Dart 10k in 2022

As adults we don't often get the same sort of praise and certification that we used to get as children, in a structured, schoolroom setting.  Instead WE need to work out for ourselves what matters -and these changes, these developments, these learnings often need to be done explicitly - we don't just suddenly "Mature into realising it!" This podcast helps you identify and celebrate your achievements - in the world you live in now!

YOU are an amazing being!  If you reflect on your own life, you will see that you have overcome so much - and although your story may be so unique that your journey isn't a mainstream film yet - you are still your own hero, and what you've been through matters.  This episode reminds you that YOU need to start to accept that what you have overcome was tough - otherwise no amount of validation from others will make a difference.  It also asks you to stop saying the phrase "you just do it don't you"...NO -  maybe YOU just do it, but it isn't an easy task, and just because you tolerated so much adversity doesn't make it ok to have happened to you!

When you've been given everything except what you really crave - emotional love and understanding - it can leave you in a bit of a dilemma.  You don't feel authentic, because you may have been brought up to only reflect the wishes of the parent; or you may not feel quite complete because you've never really been tested - your parents have been so protective you've not learned to solve your own problems.  This podcast looks at how that can feel and what we can do about it.

The last episode of this season looks at motivation and how we can stay focused on achieving our goals. It's not always about a strict rule - based approach (unless it works for you...but I know especially last year - rules tend to make me want to cheat/bend/circumvent - and unfortunately when it's health, we'll be found out in the end!)
So try these tips and tricks...I'm currently finding they're working for me!!

Dopamine is our 'reward' chemical. Instinctively our brain is programmed to survive, and many many years ago survival was much harder. Now we need to think long term and seek fulfilment at part of that, and so sometimes, we need to reprogram what we recognise as positive.
This episode explains the effects of dopamine.

Adrenaline, because of its link to 'fight/flight' often gets bad press, but a little can do you good. For me, when it comes to self care I prefer to re-energise rather than relax - I dance, I perform, I see friends and do 'escape rooms' - these are very much about excitation over relaxation...so this episode gives some ideas to engage with the dynamic aspects of self care.

It's known as 'cuffing season' - when we're forming relationships pretty quickly for reasons perhaps less related to attraction...but does 'Love at first sight' exist?

Many would say it does, of those, I hope they are still together(!), but there are definitely a number of physiological changes which can set our heart a-flutter initially, although whether they deepen into love is another matter.

Unfortunately, when I reflect on panic buying, the solution to the anxiety caused by not having the item - is to buy it... Of course in the case of creating a shortage this isn't helpful.

I used to be concerned about 'alternative' therapies, but when it comes to psychotherapy (not necessarily medical) - I believe they are an option. Talking therapy isn't for everyone, it is not always accessible neither is it always effective, and for many with whom I've spoken, talking comes later. In this episode I look at the alternatives, or approaches that can be used in compliment to psychological intervention.
Note: I am not promoting one over another, but keeping an open - although critically aware - mind.

The final episode of this season is about managing toxic friendships - how we can protect ourselves, as well as learn not to behave in ways that make others feel we are the problem.
Toxicity is not always malicious, so keeping relationships healthy can be about keeping communications open and behaviour choices flexible, while not being swayed from our core values.

Often friendships, unless deliberately solicited to be so, do not start off as toxic, but they can become so. Sometimes it might be because behaviours have been allowed to happen without question, and it might be that voicing your thoughts may help realign. Sometimes as you get to know someone you traits you don't like, or perhaps circumstances changed and one or both of you are struggling to find a me balance. Healthy friendships take effort from both sides.

- how to spot the signs
- why it happens
- what you can do about it (and how to avoid those behaviours yourself)
Friendships are wonderful but they take work from both parties, you are both making a regular choice to be there. That's why it can be so hard when they don't work out.

It's NOT self care that makes us selfish - that helps us bring back balance so we can function on the balance between emotion and logic. 'Survival mode' - is what makes us ask (even unconsciously 'what about me!?')
