COVID-19 has affected all countries in Africa. In this podcast, we are taking a closer look at some specific activities supported by Danish Red Cross, that has been carried out to respond to COVID-19. From a mobile cinema in Malawi, and blockchain-based digital vouchers in Kenya to safe deliveries in Guinea.
Danish Red Cross is working together with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies throughout Africa on raising awareness about the virus, sharing information about protection measures, enhancing access to water and sanitation and mitigating the consequences.
Survivors of trafficking in Sudan are producing soap, hand sanitizers and face masks that are being distributed to refugees to confine the virus. The services in the safe house is provided by Sudanese Red Crescent Society.
Guinea Red Cross Society is training health staff in safe deliveries and COVID-19 to promote safe deliveries during the pandemic and build trust to the community. It’s important, as there was a decrease in deliveries at health clinics during ebola.
When Ethiopian migrants return to Ethiopia, they must quarantine before returning to their community. Ethiopian Red Cross Society is assisting the returnees in quarantine centers with essential items, phone call to their familie and information on COVID-19.
Malawi Red Cross Society has been touring the country with a mobile cinema, screening videos with important messages on COVID-19 to raise awareness on the virus. During the screening, people are keeping distance to minimize the risk of infection.
The cryptocurrency ‘Community Inclusion Currency’ has been distributed by Kenyan Red Cross Society in Mukuru in Kenya during COVID-19. It has been implemented to strengthen the local economy and increase access to hygiene items and water.
