We welcome back Scott R. Jones, writer, sorcerer, and mailman launching an attack on a very specific god, worshiped by the Jehovah’s Witness. (Or as Scott calls it in the book JHVH1.)
Scott has spent time on Talk Gnosis before, often talking about the intersection of horror and Gnosticism, either individually or on a panel. Scott gained this expertise as a prolific writer and publisher of horror fiction, and through his own explorations into Gnosticism and esotericism.

Hey everybody, Nic Laccetti ‘s back for a show we can’t wait for you to check out all about Kenneth Anger and his work. Anger was an influential independent and avant-garde filmmaker who incorporated occult themes and transgressive imagery into his work. As a gay man and follower of Aleister Crowley’s Thelema in the 1940s-1960s, Anger saw his films as a way to magically influence culture and usher in Crowley’s new “Aeon of Horus.” His techniques, such as abstract montages set to pop music in films like Scorpio Rising, had a major impact on later directors. Anger was also embedded in 1960s counterculture, befriending and working with celebrities like Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful and uhhhh one of the Manson family killers. We discuss how Anger’s films were themselves occult rituals, not just depicting esoteric and Gnostic themes on a surface level. Jason Mehmel and Nic Lacetti explore the similarities between the mythology and metaphysics Gnosticism and the Elder Scrolls series of games. (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, among others!)
Continually developed, and blossoming within the game Morrowind, the Elder Scrolls suggest a metaphysics very different from a lot of other fantasy, consisting of divine beings that explore the nature of stasis and change, as well as creator figures that are either benevolent or malevolent, depending on your perspective. Not to mention, some of those divine beings seem to know they’re in a video game, and some of the mythology reflects the ‘reality’ of a video game experience.
Both the characters in the world and the real-life fans continuously debate and theorize about the nature of these mysteries. They generally assume there there is no ‘final’ answer to be gleaned; the debate is the point.
Nic and Jason reflect on that as connected to Gnostic communities and reflect on the value of discussion within the community!

We both heartily enjoyed the movie, and also couldn’t help but find numerous gnostic, esoteric, and mystical associations the whole way through! This episode was so much fun to record; we hope you enjoy it too!

On Pop Gnosis we take a look at the culture around us through a gnostic lens. One of my pet peeves (well actually more like "existential horror reaction") is that if you Google anything about Gnosticism you have an extremely high probability of getting result after result of conspiracy theories. This unfortunate association of anything Gnostic with utter nuttery is not exactly fantastic for building a movement and furthering the restoration of Gnosticism to this world.
So, that's why I enjoy periodically collecting up some of the ridiculous conspiracies that people connect to Gnosticism (check out the previous posts here and here), and here are some new ones for your "enjoyment."

The Gnostics were often accused of being elitist. When you claim to have secret knowledge that the ordinary Christians don’t have, maybe it’s inevitable. But was that really accurate? The bishops will talk about Gnosticism’s perceived elitism.
Father Tony starts a vlog. There’s been some recent flapdoodle amongst the New Testament literature scholars about whether or not the ancient Gnostics were “intellectuals.” Fr. Tony summarizes (poorly) the debate and shares a few thoughts of his own.
