Radio Gordo

This unhosted culture-jam speaks for itself in collage fashion, where media emerges from the infinite ether like the screen on a Magic Eight-ball in order to connect the microdots, and send you a personal message.

It is difficult to believe that our original peoples were treated the way that they have been. This program was funded by The NCRA when I was at the now defunct CICV FM in Lake Cowichan. My co-host for the shows was Catherine...a Mohawk. I have not done a more important show than this one, but unfortunately it was not heard by many listeners. I have posted it so that the information gets out there, especially the voices some of those involved. This show documents a very sad aspect of who we are in this country, and my hope is that the work we did here will lead to a better understanding among us all...We should all heed Catherinès powerful summation.

Richard C. Hoagland is a former space science museum curator; a former NASA consultant, and during the historic Apollo Missions to the Moon, was science advisor to Walter Cronkite and CBS News. For over 20 years, Hoagland has been leading an outside scientific team in a critically acclaimed independent analysis of possible intelligently-designed artifacts on Mars. Richard and his team's investigations have been quietly extended to include over 30 years of previously hidden data from NASA, Soviet, and Pentagon missions to the Moon.

Al Bielek was born in 1927 and developed a career for himself in some of the most bizarre and controversial margins of the US Army. He claims that the technological prowess of the United States is far more advanced than one might imagine due to the profoundly unusual sources that the country has to extract, including extraterrestrial beings. It has also been expressed through the use of psychological brainwashing in his government, which he believes was a victim. What he supposedly saw so long ago could have important implications for today’s world.

I had my musical world opened wide by David when he was the
ultimate all-night radio DJ on CHUM-FM in the late
60s, before there were formats other than what the DJ created. David left CHUM, after the evolving rules began to constrict him, to become program director for CFNY-FM
to establish it as a cutting edge station. He was a man of principles who never compromised and also left CFNY when enforced changes appeared, refusing to, as he put it, turn the station into a conduit for "shallow hit-oriented Pabulum".
I took a course with him in the History of Rock Music at the Learning Annex, and we became friends. He was actually a pretty straight cat, which surprised me. Having said that, he was an eclectic forward thinker and a man of considerable depth. This scoped air-check was broadcast on Q 107, in its heyday. David was a great radio man and is sorely missed.

"Burns on line, go ahead" was a familiar phrase to listeners of the now defunct CKO News Network show The Hot Line with Pat Burns. He began his career in Vancouver, covered the Salem Riots, was in Montreal just in time for the FLQ crisis, ran for politics and hosted a very controversial yet entertaining radio show. A man with a great voice and a lazer sharp wit, gravel-voiced Pat was a true radio demagogue, and a funny at that, at a time when AM talk shows were the most influential of all media.

Was Laurel Canyon a black op camp of musicians in the 60s counter-culture? Author David McGowan examines the history of some of the greatest 60s rock groups and stars such as the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, the Doors, Frank Zappa and many more. Where did all these people come from? How did this small area become so influential in the 60's counter culture? Did it all back-fire?

View Details

Was the 60's counter culture created to undermine the anti-war movement? Did it backfire?
In the mid to late 1950s, many intellectuals began experimenting with LSD. Alfred Matthew Hubbard introduced Aldous Huxley to the drug in 1955 and Timothy Leary began taking it in 1962. By 1963, LSD had escaped the laboratory and became popular as a legal recreational drug with the emerging counterculture. Lee and Shlain argue that LSD influenced the social movements of the 1960s. The Free Speech Movement began in 1964, followed by the wide availability of street acid in 1965, the birth of the hippie movement in 1966, and the growing antiwar movement associated with the New Left.
