Hello and welcome back to the raising smart kid 2.0 podcast. I'm so glad you tuned in for today's episode because I feel it's probably one of the most important ones that we've done in our almost one hundred episodes before we get to that if I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you yet. My name is Ya?am Prax and I'm the host of raising smart kids 2.0 podcasts. More importantly, I'm a mom of two daughters a wife and have. Had the privilege working with thousands of students along with their parents. In my 17 years as a performing arts educator, I'm glad you tuned in today because you failed. Now for some people, those two words can be completely devastating which is really unfortunate because it's through our failures that we learn more. Thomas Edison the inventor of the light bulb is said to have failed 1000 times. However, he didn't see those 1000 failures as failures. He says the fastest way to succeed is to double your failure rate. So what are you going to fail at today? What will you allow your kids to fail at today? In our society failure definitely is seen as a negative quality. But in my 17 years as a business owner and my 14 years as a mom and 20 years as an educator failure is something that you need to instill in our kids as a positive quality and water. My favorite things to think about when it comes to failure is a little clip in the movie. Meet the Robinsons where the main character is devastated because something he created doesn't work. Louis is distraught. Meanwhile, the family around him start hooting and hollering and they are getting out the confetti cannons and celebrating his failure because of what they know is that the more times you fail the closer you are. At achieving that success. Over on this show notes page 4 of this podcast I'll include that clip from Meet the Robinsons because it really accurately depicts how we need to be able to see failure. When my oldest was in kindergarten she came home and she was so excited because she had earned an eraser or something so some small trinkets from her classroom teacher. When I inquired about how she had earned this coveted trinket she said, "Mommy I didn't make any mistakes on my schoolwork and there were no eraser marks so I got a prize!" And I thought oh man if kids are taught to not make mistakes we're not allowed to make mistakes and those mistakes aren't celebrated as part of the learning process. Wow. Our kids are going to have a hard time dealing with things as they get older enough to go into the world on their own. So today I want you to think about this. I have one of my favorite quotes and it's by Walt Disney in this quote he talks about not spending too much time looking back. Or in other words not spending too much mental capacity thinking about what you might construe as a failure because each of those mistakes leads to the success and leads you to where you need to be. So he says around here, however, we don't look back for very long. We keep moving forward opening new doors and doing new things. It has. We are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. And for me personally and in my 17-year-old business that couldn't be more true. When I opened our doors 17 years ago I did so with wanting to share my love of dance with my community as I progressed through my business and my kids desired to learn something new. My oldest wanted to learn the drums and then she wanted to learn karate so it was my responsibility as a mom and really as a creator to make those opportunities available for her. So rather than just teach dance we offered more opportunities for more families to come together and enjoy all of our programs under one roof. Saving them time and money and really the hassle of having to take multiple kids to multiple places around town at the same time. And now as we round out 2017 heading into 2018 we're opening new doors here at the academy and here on the podcast as well. We're going to dive with both feet into the deep end and introduce ways to equip kids to fund their own future. Now what that looks like is we're going to be offering courses on wine for kids across the U.S. and maybe even the world for them to learn marketable skills such as this putting together a podcast helping somebody else put out a podcast. Creating websites making videos taking photos all things that kids can do right now no matter what their age no matter what anyone else thinks. Kids are so capable and we just need to get out of their way and let them explore those things that light them up let them explore those things where their inner creator comes out and is magnified because they are loving what they are doing. And to end this podcast I want to close with another of my favorite Disney quotes and this has to do with kids and their potential and their ability to create their own Brighter Futures which is what we're helping you do here at the podcast and at the academy in 2013. And here is the quote, "To the youngsters of today.The world is getting better there still is plenty of opportunity." Yes. And as we head into the future a future where 65 percent of the jobs today won't exist when our kids are adults we need to equip them with skills to create their own opportunities create their own brighter future and create ways for them to fund those dreams are you with me head over to Elco Arts Academy. After 100 episodes, Yong reveals the new brand, the new direction, and the new opportunities for you and your kiddos coming in 2018 on The Big Reveal. Happy (almost) new year everyone! I’m recording this episode just days before the new year. I am beyond excited to be recording the 100th podcast episode this week and reveal to you what the future holds here on the podcast as well as what I’m doing locally. I first have to say that it’s been my absolute pleasure to bring you the Raising smART Kids 2.0 podcast. I appreciate your inviting me into your world every week allowing me to share my passion of raising smarter kids through the arts with you. As we approach the new year, I have to tell you that I am more excited about what lies ahead in the year than I’ve ever been. And for being a 17-year business, that should tell you a lot. Ok, my friends, it’s time to reveal the new name for Podcast and of my local brick mortar business. Are you ready??? The new name and the new brand starting in 2018 is... Our Young Creators and you can find us online at ouryoungcreators.com and ouryoungcreators on FB for now. Our Young Creators was born out of an experiment. The experiment was to bring my 11-year-old daughter into my business and train her to perform some of the more technical tasks in my business so that I could replace my VA and pay her instead. After working shoulder to shoulder for months, I’m thrilled to share with you that the experiment has been a tremendous success! My 11 year old now possesses skills such as website migration, graphic design for blog posts and podcasts, embedding video and podcast content, tagging, alt text, and more. She’s able to do more for me technically than most business owners that I know. The best part is that I’ve been able to hire and pay her for these newfound skills. With these skills, she now works for me, but the really cool thing is that she’s able to serve the world (and fund her own future with these very skills). When I've shared this experiment with other business owners, they've gotten super excited and want to bring their own kids into their businesses. Our Young Creators builds on my 17-year-old local performing arts school, weekly podcast (100 episodes strong by the end of Dec), published book, and my love of technology, teaching, and empowering kids. In 2018, Our Young Creators will be unleashed and is a rebrand of the 2 arms of my business (Elko Arts Academy and The Tech Savvy Studio Owner). After working with thousands of kids and families over the past 17 years as the owner of a performing arts school and being the mom of 2 daughters one of the common frustrations that I address is "How do I get my kids OFF their devices?" My take on this is that it's the wrong question to ask. I believe that by teaching kids to be intentional with their use of technology, we can turn consumption time into creation time. Here at Our Young Creators, we’re committed to equipping kids, training kids with marketable, real-world skills like podcasting so that they can work side by side with the entrepreneurial parents, serve others, AND fund their own brighter futures in the process. I'm hardwired with a heart to serve kids. To help them understand that unique is beautiful and fitting in is a disservice to them - that who they are extremely valuable and the gifts they have are meant to be shared with the world in a BIG way. Over the past 17 years, everything I've done (performing arts studio, podcast, book, rebrand) has revolved around giving kids the opportunity to shine and for parents to recognize and celebrate what makes their kids unique. You see, I was the kid that always felt out of place and wanted desperately to fit in. I was the kid that did well in school but performed embarrassingly on standardized tests. I was that kid that always wanted to do things my own way but never did because I didn't want to draw attention to myself. I was the kid that was too shy to raise my hand in class even when I knew all the answers. I was the kid that never had the confidence to do the things I wanted because I thought people would laugh if I tried or if I failed. Because of who I was as a kid, I NEVER want any kid to feel "less than." I want to kids embrace themselves, their gifts, and not let anyone stop them from doing or becoming who they want. I want to see them SHINE and step into their immense potential. You might be wondering what this all means for the podcast? This podcast will become the voice for kids to share their stories, their perspective, their creative genius, and transform into creators of their own futures. On today’s podcast, I’ll be revealing your fav episodes of the podcast based on the number of downloads. Before we head into the new year and I reveal what’s in store on the podcast and in my brick and mortar performing arts school, I wanted to reflect on 2017 with all of you. My personal 2017 started off with a bang. I joined a Mastermind and was surrounded by 11 other super successful women entrepreneurs and I had a clear vision of where my business was headed. I got hired by fellow performing arts studio owners, along with local ones, to help them with their technology (FB ads, websites, etc) and The Tech Savvy Studio Owner was born. I had a stockpile of podcast episodes scheduled to be released My Virtual Assistant had taken over the majority of the behind the scenes magic to run multiple ventures, I was excited about the adventures I had planned with my family. Life was awesome...until it wasn’t. In the dead of the night, on a bitterly cold and snowy day in January, we awoke to banging on our front door. Heart pounding, we headed to the front door, dreading what we’d discover on the other side of the pounding door. In walked my parents neighbor and long-time friend with news that my little brother, my only sibling, was in the hospital with a life-threatening injury and it was bad…. I sent this friend to go gather up my parents and my oldest that was sleeping over at their house and head to the hospital. My husband, my youngest, and I prepped to head to the hospital to find out what on earth had happened that night on my youngest nephew’s birthday. While upstairs, I received a phone call from my sister-in-law stating that my brother had passed... And the world as I knew it came crashing down. It’s been a steady uphill climb to find my new “normal” in 2017. I didn’t share this story with your so that you could feel sorry for me. Just the opposite, in fact. This story illustrates how fleeting life can be. We often get so bogged down in the minutae of our daily lives, we often forget to live. We forget to be grateful for every moment we are gifted on this planet. We lose sight of being grateful for the people that mean the most. As moms and dads, we neglect self-care to care for others. Since losing my brother, I find that I don’t stress the small stuff as much anymore. Money and family are meant to be enjoyed. Not hoarded or ignored. I attempt to live each day full and make a difference. I’ve not shared this story publicly before this post. Part of me wanted to keep it hidden away. Separate from what I do here on the podcast, in my Academy. What I’ve realized, though, it that this experience, is now part of who I am. I used some of those great big emotions into work I shared here on the podcast. Turning to technology and growing that part of my business happened as a direct result of this incident. This week as we inch closer to episode #100 of the podcast here at the end of 2017, I’m often asked which podcast episode is my favorite? This is often followed by, who was your favorite guest and which topic was my favorite to discuss. The short answer is that they’re ALL my favorite episode. Why? Think about this...if you’re a parent and someone asked you which of your kids was your favorite.How would YOU respond? In my case, both my daughters are my favorite, for different reasons. I am sure you would respond similarly. Each child brings his/her own perspectives, talents, strengths, and weaknesses to the world. No singular attribute edges the other out so that I can declare a winner, or a favorite child. Instead, each podcast, much like a child has offered me another opportunity to become a better version of me. I’ve prepping for this podcast with some serious introspection, here are the top 3 reasons why podcasting is and will continue to be part of my legacy. GROWTHOver this past year, I was able to grow as an individual. I’ve been forcing myself to stretch outside my introverted tendencies so that I can share my passions with you. Just like a dancer or musician in my performing arts school gets better with practice and mentorship, so too have I become a better podcaster through repeated practice. Through repetition, feedback from other successful podcasters, and by refining my own personal process, I’ve learning of and refining my own process, I’ve grown as a storyteller, interviewer, and creator. CONNECTION A podcast is one of the greatest gifts I’ve given to myself. You might think that’s an odd thing to say because a podcast is, after all, work. From editing, uploading, syndication, and everything in between, putting together a weekly podcast does require time and effort. For me, though, the effort is more than worth it to connect with phenomenal individuals from around the world to share ways to Raise smARTER kids through the arts. If not for the podcast, I may never have had the privilege of meeting them, let alone finding trusted advisors and partners in the process. SERVICE When I set out to relaunch the podcast, I did it of my desire to celebrate kids and give parents a resource to do the same. Each episode enabled me to walk hand in hand with you as you celebrated your own kids; their unique gifts and talents and to instill in them that who they are and what bring to the world is so important. As we head into 2018, let me ask you a question? What do you want create with your kids in the new year? Maybe you’re looking for ways to connect, strengthen, or catapult your relationship to a new level. If this is you, I have some good news, well, in fact, great new for you! Ever wonder if I have a favorite episode? Fav Guest? Fav topic? On today's episode, you'll find out as I reveal my fav of all time. Last week I revealed the TOP 17 most downloaded episode of 2017. This week as we inch closer to episode #100 of the podcast here at the end of 2017, I’m often asked which podcast episode is my favorite? This is often followed by, who was your favorite guest and which topic was my favorite to discuss. The short answer is that they’re ALL my favorite episode. Why? Think about this...if you’re a parent and someone asked you which of your kids was your favorite.How would YOU respond? In my case, both my daughters are my favorite, for different reasons. I am sure you would respond similarly. Each child brings his/her own perspectives, talents, strengths, and weaknesses to the world. No singular attribute edges the other out so that I can declare a winner, or a favorite child. Instead, each podcast, much like a child has offered me another opportunity to become a better version of me. I’ve prepping for this podcast with some serious introspection, here are the top 3 reasons why podcasting is and will continue to be part of my legacy. GROWTHOver this past year, I was able to grow as an individual. I’ve been forcing myself to stretch outside my introverted tendencies so that I can share my passions with you. Just like a dancer or musician in my performing arts school gets better with practice and mentorship, so too have I become a better podcaster through repeated practice. Through repetition, feedback from other successful podcasters, and by refining my own personal process, I’ve learning of and refining my own process, I’ve grown as a storyteller, interviewer, and creator. CONNECTION A podcast is one of the greatest gifts I’ve given to myself. You might think that’s an odd thing to say because a podcast is, after all, work. From editing, uploading, syndication, and everything in between, putting together a weekly podcast does require time and effort. For me, though, the effort is more than worth it to connect with phenomenal individuals from around the world to share ways to Raise smARTER kids through the arts. If not for the podcast, I may never have had the privilege of meeting them, let alone finding trusted advisors and partners in the process. SERVICE When I set out to relaunch the podcast, I did it of my desire to celebrate kids and give parents a resource to do the same. Each episode enabled me to walk hand in hand with you as you celebrated your own kids; their unique gifts and talents and to instill in them that who they are and what bring to the world is so important. As we head into 2018, let me ask you a question? What do you want create with your kids in the new year? Maybe you’re looking for ways to connect, strengthen, or catapult your relationship to a new level. If this is you, I have some good news, well, in fact, great new for you! We’ll be revealing our new name, new brand, and new mission on episode #100 so make sure to you tune in to find out what 2018 will bring. Hello and welcome back to the raising smart kid 2.0 podcast. I'm so glad you tuned in for today's episode because I feel it's probably one of the most important ones that we've done in our almost one hundred episodes before we get to that if I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you yet. My name is Ya?am Prax and I'm the host of raising smart kids 2.0 podcasts. More importantly, I'm a mom of two daughters a wife and have. Had the privilege working with thousands of students along with their parents. In my 17 years as a performing arts educator, I'm glad you tuned in today because you failed.
Now for some people, those two words can be completely devastating which is really unfortunate because it's through our failures that we learn more. Thomas Edison the inventor of the light bulb is said to have failed 1000 times. However, he didn't see those 1000 failures as failures. He says the fastest way to succeed is to double your failure rate.
So what are you going to fail at today? What will you allow your kids to fail at today? In our society failure definitely is seen as a negative quality.
But in my 17 years as a business owner and my 14 years as a mom and 20 years as an educator failure is something that you need to instill in our kids as a positive quality and water. My favorite things to think about when it comes to failure is a little clip in the movie. Meet the Robinsons where the main character is devastated because something he created doesn't work. Louis is distraught. Meanwhile, the family around him start hooting and hollering and they are getting out the confetti cannons and celebrating his failure because of what they know is that the more times you fail the closer you are. At achieving that success. Over on this show notes page 4 of this podcast I'll include that clip from Meet the Robinsons because it really accurately depicts how we need to be able to see failure.
When my oldest was in kindergarten she came home and she was so excited because she had earned an eraser or something so some small trinkets from her classroom teacher. When I inquired about how she had earned this coveted trinket she said, "Mommy I didn't make any mistakes on my schoolwork and there were no eraser marks so I got a prize!"
And I thought oh man if kids are taught to not make mistakes we're not allowed to make mistakes and those mistakes aren't celebrated as part of the learning process. Wow. Our kids are going to have a hard time dealing with things as they get older enough to go into the world on their own. So today I want you to think about this. I have one of my favorite quotes and it's by Walt Disney in this quote he talks about not spending too much time looking back. Or in other words not spending too much mental capacity thinking about what you might construe as a failure because each of those mistakes leads to the success and leads you to where you need to be.
So he says around here, however, we don't look back for very long. We keep moving forward opening new doors and doing new things. It has. We are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. And for me personally and in my 17-year-old business that couldn't be more true. When I opened our doors 17 years ago I did so with wanting to share my love of dance with my community as I progressed through my business and my kids desired to learn something new.
My oldest wanted to learn the drums and then she wanted to learn karate so it was my responsibility as a mom and really as a creator to make those opportunities available for her. So rather than just teach dance we offered more opportunities for more families to come together and enjoy all of our programs under one roof. Saving them time and money and really the hassle of having to take multiple kids to multiple places around town at the same time. And now as we round out 2017 heading into 2018 we're opening new doors here at the academy and here on the podcast as well. We're going to dive with both feet into the deep end and introduce ways to equip kids to fund their own future.
Now what that looks like is we're going to be offering courses on wine for kids across the U.S. and maybe even the world for them to learn marketable skills such as this putting together a podcast helping somebody else put out a podcast. Creating websites making videos taking photos all things that kids can do right now no matter what their age no matter what anyone else thinks. Kids are so capable and we just need to get out of their way and let them explore those things that light them up let them explore those things where their inner creator comes out and is magnified because they are loving what they are doing. And to end this podcast I want to close with another of my favorite Disney quotes and this has to do with kids and their potential and their ability to create their own Brighter Futures which is what we're helping you do here at the podcast and at the academy in 2013.
And here is the quote, "To the youngsters of today.The world is getting better there still is plenty of opportunity." Yes. And as we head into the future a future where 65 percent of the jobs today won't exist when our kids are adults we need to equip them with skills to create their own opportunities create their own brighter future and create ways for them to fund those dreams are you with me head over to Elco Arts Academy.
