After 2 years of avoiding the virus, I caught COVID in the past week. I spent most of the past 3 days in bed. Since I'm feeling better, I decided to make a video and discuss where I think I caught it, how I'm doing and what I plan to do after I recover.

I also reiterate some advice for travelers that I gave in an older video that I think is important. Please take care of yourselves.

In these videos, I'm sharing the metrics that I'm using to track my progress. If you find them useless, I encourage you to do the same. If you have other metrics that you've found useful on your own journey, please share them in the comments.

You Ain’t Gonna Need It

I frequently advise people who ask about packing for living abroad to reduce the amount that they’re taking in half. I was once told that the advice wasn’t useful. Where I failed is in explaining the true value of the advice. In this talk, I unpack the underlying value and how it ties to the values we have in our lives.

As I avoid the pressure to rush to FIRE, I keep my focus on the most important factors for success. The first of those is my savings rate.

Find out how well I did in September

This series focuses on my own FIRE as a very late bloomer. Because I've already had 3 mini-retirements, I'm not feeling the pressure of the RE (Retire Early) component of FIRE and will just be focusing on the FI (Financial Independence).

In these videos, I'm sharing the metrics that I'm using to track my progress. If you find them useless, I encourage you to do the same. If you have other metrics that you've found useful on your own journey, please share them in the comments.

Remote work relies very heavily on trust and communication. I've just returned to a remote-first culture, so while there was never a need to sell the idea, there is still the ongoing need to ensure that I maintain trust and open communication. Remember that, even in a job setting, you are in a community with others.

I share a simple framework for progressing in your remote work journey in a way that minimizes disruption to yourself and those you work with.

7 Streams of Income for 2022

You can read the entire article here:

https://themakingofamillionaire.com/the-10-rule-6aab07e342c4

From the article:

If every year you can replace an additional 10% of your current income doing work you love, you can achieve financial freedom in no more than 10 years.

My return to full-time work combined with my side projects provides an opportunity to put this plan into action. As with any technique that I implement, I will be putting on spin on it. In this case, I’m going to apply the rule to multiple side projects to provide diversification and acceleration.

In one of the FB ex-pat groups, I saw a question posted that made me reflect on how far I've come in my journey and what it took for me to get there:

"Why do I feel guilty about leaving? Like not staying in the struggle to change America. Can anyone relate?"

Although not everyone experiences it, Survivor's Guilt is a real thing. I felt it when I started doing better than my siblings and my peers. It was one of the reasons that I didn't leave and stay gone in 2002.

In fact, I returned, settled down, and didn't leave again until 2016.

But it took a lot for me to leave then. And I've been gone ever since.

One of the best practices I've implemented in my remote work career is having an accountability partner. Similar to having a training partner in sports or a buddy on field trips in school, having someone invested in your success is a game-changer.

In this video, I share some of the major benefits.

Improving Your Chances of Success

Having an accountability partner is like having a workout partner. You've created an external commitment with someone else who is both invested in your success and along for the journey.

Helps You Maintain Focus & Clarity

Even if they are not in your field, your partner can ground you in your progress, making sure you don't take on too much. Explaining things to them will also force you to be clear.

Expanding Your Horizons/Network

Choosing a partner outside your area of expertise can expand your network. Over the course of your work together, you'll be introduced to new ideas, resources, and even people.

Strengthening An Existing Relationship

Having an accountability partner that you've known can provide a reason to stay in touch. Obligations often reduce our chances of communicating with our friends and colleagues but having them as a partner

Discovering New Opportunities

Sometimes the discussions that take place during accountability meetings lead to new opportunities. For instance, one of my accountability partners and started a YouTube channel after we realized the benefit of many of our meetings extended beyond the two of us.

Over the course of your travels, you will need to pay for goods and services. You will also need to receive payment, whether it’s from clients or friends when going out to dinner. Not all payment systems are available everywhere so you’ll need flexibility if you want to pay/receive funds without the hassle of constantly using cash or credit cards, which are often impractical or simply not accepted.

In this episode, I share the apps that I’ve used over the past 5 years to both send and receive payments when I’m not using cash or credit.

I received the following question in response to the "Switching to Weekly Sprints" episode:

"Working in teams, how do you help reduce meeting fatigue when switching to weekly sprints? This is the primary reason I have kept to two weeks, also with a higher frequency of meetings (reviews, retros, etc.) I feel it leaves less time in the week for actual task work."

In my response, I provide some techniques that you can use to reduce fatigue while keeping yourself (and your team) on track.

There's never a need to be fake. Stay authentic and true to yourself. In today's episode, I talk about the pitfalls of the "Fake It Til You Make It" mindset and why it's unnecessary.

I'm just getting started in podcasting solo and it definitely shows (there's not even any intro music). But there's nothing fake about it. As with most things, it's a process and that's OK.

Welcome to the Cocoa Nomad podcast, a show about location independent entrepreneurship. I’ll discuss the techniques, tools and tips that can help you balance work and travel and share my experiences (and experiments) in trying to make both a living and a life.

This episode is a bit of my origin story and why I've decided to start podcasting my journey.  I just wanted to give a taste of what's to come and the ideas and topics that will be discussed. Hope that you'll come along.

Thanks!
