Today way go back into the vault, September 27, 2016 to be exact. On this date we dropped a interview we did with Charles Stokes from Big Deer Hunters. Charles made his own soaps, cover scents and deer lures from his basement.

It was one of our first interviews. AB3 was very green and the production quality wasn't the best. Still the creativity and determination of Charles Stokes is a wonderful story that needed to be told.

Episode 124

Divya Anantharaman: Gotham Taxidermy

AB3 sits down with Divya Anantharaman, founder of Gotham Taxidermy. The Brooklyn-based award-winning taxidermist discusses her journey from the fashion industry into the fascinating world of taxidermy, and the legacy she wants to leave behind as a Woman of Color in her unique space.

Episode Highlights

  • Divya gives her refreshing opinion on hunting and her experience taking on clients who want her to preserve their animals, from waterfowl to big game.
  • Divya talks about the strangest project she was ever given, as well as the animals she finds most challenging to preserve.
  • They talk about being “ambassadors of our culture” as they journey to other countries.
  • Sonya and Necota talk about their event, The Gathering, which brings together the Black and Brown communities to learn more about and appreciate all things camping and the outdoors.

3 Key Points

  • If you’re looking to get into taxidermy, find one animal that you’re passionate about and focus on learning all you can about recreating that animal until you’ve mastered it. Then move onto the next—expand your skillset further.
  • A skilled taxidermist like Divya can preserve your pet; but, it’s important to set the right expectations. They can do a lot, but they will never be able to replace the relationship you had with your animal.
  • Now that Divya has experienced a lot of personal success in what she does, her next mission is one of outreach—to bring more education, accessibility, and diversity into the field of taxidermy.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • What bigger expression of love and appreciation for an animal than recreating it—turning it into this other form of itself. ~Divya
  • At the root of it, when you go outside, you’re appreciating nature. That nature is a little sparrow or a big deer or an alligator. If you’re appreciating it, that’s really what the outdoors is all about. ~Divya
  • With taxidermy, we’re always surrounded by death; so, I’m always thinking about what I’m going to leave behind. ~Divya

Episode 123

Sonya & Necota Staples: Staples InTents

AB3 sits down with Sonya and Necota Staples, the husband and wife team behind Staples InTents, an Atlanta-based camping, adventure travel and lifestyle blog. The brand was created to encourage the Black and Brown community to experience the life-changing effect of the outdoors. Listen in as the pair share their passion for camping and overlanding, and how they intend to spread that passion to countless others in their community!

Episode Highlights

  • Sonya and Necota share how bonding together in the outdoors repaired a marriage that was on the brink of divorce.
  • Our guests break down “overlanding” and how to choose a vehicle and amenities that suit your travel goals and lifestyle.
  • They talk about being “ambassadors of our culture” as they journey to other countries.
  • Sonya and Necota talk about their event, The Gathering, which brings together the Black and Brown communities to learn more about and appreciate all things camping and the outdoors.

3 Key Points

  • If you’re curious about camping for the first time, it helps to ease into it by assessing your comfort level and making that first trip as pleasant as possible—even if that means you’ll be “glamping” your first time around.
  • As a Black-American, whenever you travel to a different country, see yourself as an ambassador not just of your nation, but of your unique culture as well. This mindset makes every trip all the more rewarding.
  • With all that Sonya and Necota do, particularly through their now bi-annual event The Gathering, their ultimate goal is “to meet you wherever you are in your outdoor journey and help elevate it.”

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Camping allowed us the space that we needed. It allowed us to set the tone for us to go out and change roles, see each other differently, see value in each other differently, and learn to listen to each other. If you’re outside and the goal is to put up a tent, we’ve got no time to argue! ~Sonya
  • The difference between “glamping” and “camping” is “surviving” and “thriving”. ~Necota
  • We are ambassadors of our country and ambassadors of our culture. As we are traveling, we are paradigm-shifting everyone that we interact with. So, there’s some gravitas to overlanding that wasn’t really clear to us before. ~Necota

Episode 122

Nikkita Gordon: Cute & Cocky

AB3 sits down with Nikkita Gordon, Founder and CEO of Cute & Cocky, a manufacturer of firearm accessories and apparel based in Albany, Ga. Listen in as she shares how she found massive success as a serial entrepreneur at only 26 years old, why she specifically decided to start a business in the firearm industry, and her exciting ideas for the future.

Episode Highlights

  • Nikkita tells the gripping story of how a couple of close-calls with a registered sex offender motivated her to get her firearm license.
  • Nikkita shares her goal of licensing out the patents for her company’s holsters, so that they can be incorporated into the clothing of existing brands
  • Nikkita talks about how she and her business was received when she came on the scene as a young, Black female entrepreneur.

3 Key Points

  • After noticing a lack of concealed carry attire options for women, Nikkita filled the market gap by building a company which offers clothing that is not only functional, but fashionable as well.
  • Nikkita and Cute & Cocky are on fire and ready to scale the brand further than it has ever gone in the past few years, from licensing out the patents for its holsters to existing clothing brands to venturing into global markets.
  • There aren’t currently a lot of Black women involved in shooting sports and the hunting industry. Nikkita hopes that, through her example, more individuals like herself will become aware of and excited about getting involved in these spaces.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Who wouldn’t want to own a concealed carry holster company with patents and trademarks already completed for them?
  • I’ve been able to partner with these organizations because they understand what I have to offer as far as bringing an audience of Black women to get more involved in shooting sports and hunting.
  • This is a space where there are very few Black women involved; so, when I walk into a lot of these rooms, there are only a few of us. But it’s not because they don’t want to be there. Sometimes, they’re just not aware and someone has to enliven their interest in these events.

Episode 121

New Beginnings

AB3 returns to the mic to talk about what’s in store for the Bryant Land Show going forward.

Episode Highlights

  • AB3 talks about his burnout and the passing of his mother leading to his pausing the podcast 14 months ago
  • AB3 hopes to get more women, especially Black women, onto the show, including guntubers to give talk about important firearm-related topics given the current cultural climate in the country
  • AB3 looks to “step out of the hunting and fishing box” as the show progresses and explore more of the outdoors lifestyle in general

3 Key Points

  • The Bryant Land Show will continue to evolve with the introduction of a video podcast, amongst other things AB3 has in store for the future. Despite that, he intends to keep the core of the show going—to continue to stick to the roots of hunting, fishing, boating, and other subjects that made the show its own.
  • AB3 believes that telling more stories will open more eyes to the real world of hunting, gun ownership, and the outdoors lifestyle as a whole. He intends to bring a diverse range of guests to do just that.
  • While the podcast will soon venture into topics beyond hunting and fishing, AB3 will always ensure that the show stays true to the brand’s core mission: Bringing diversity to the outdoors.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • There are a lot of new podcasts out. A lot of people look at that as competition; but, we’re just going to do us here—me and my guests. We’re going to talk about hunting. We’re going to talk about fishing.
  • I want to talk to interesting people. I want them to tell their stories. And in order to do that, we’ve got to expand. We’ve got to grow.
  • Bringing diversity to the outdoors: That is still our mission.

Episode 118

Huntin' Easterns

AB3 covers a variety of topics in today’s episode, from turkey hunting to grilling to baseball.

Episode Highlights

  • AB3 remembers his father, Adam Bryant Jr.
  • Similarities between hunters and baseball players
  • Hunting deer and grilling on the Traeger
  • Why AB3 hates hunting Easterns

3 Key Points

  • There are many traits that hunters, especially bowhunters, and baseball players have in common. Obviously, both require a lot of the same skills and disciplines. In fact, a lot of baseball players are bowhunters themselves and love outdoor adventures in general.
  • There are tons of ways to enjoy deer; but, AB3 prefers the classics: backstrap and stew. He doesn’t do anything special with the backstrap. For him, experimenting with different seasonings and rubs and grilling the meat until it’s done always makes for tasty wild game.
  • Of the big four—Merriam, Rio Grande, Eastern, and Osceola; it has been said that the Easterns and Osceolas are the two toughest to hunt. AB3 has never hunted Osceolas, but says that Easterns are a pain to track because, unlike Merriams and Rios, they “shut the hell up” as soon as you call them.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • The big picture, at the end of the day, is folks getting back out in the world and enjoying events. ~AB3
  • I hate hunting Easterns because I’ve hunted Merriams and I’ve hunted Rios and, as an average to below-average caller, it’s fun to call Merriams and Rios, but Easterns fly off the roost, hit the ground, and shut the hell up. ~AB3
  • Not everything in life has to be hard to be enjoyed. I’m a firm believer that there’s too many people walking around saying if it’s not hard and it’s not a challenge, it’s not rewarding. Bullshit. It can be just as rewarding and just as fun if it was easy and you had a good time doing it. ~AB3

Episode 117

Turkey Broadheads

A few weeks ago, AB3 took a poll on the types of broadheads most archers and hunters preferred. He gives his thoughts on what he considers surprising results from the poll, the differences between fixed and mechanical blades, and how to improve your turkey hunts.

Episode Highlights

  • Differences between fixed blades and mechanical (expandable) blades
  • Why 62% of respondents prefer fixed broadheads to mechanical broadheads for turkey hunts
  • The importance of penetration and shot placement

3 Key Points

  • Fixed blades are the choice for traditionalists who prefer shooting lower-poundage bows. Mechanical blades, which require bows rated 50 pounds or more, have their blades closed until impact, whereupon they expand to cut through the target.
  • 62% of respondents say that they prefer fixed broadheads when hunting turkey. There were two reasons given: Either they personally had a bad experience using mechanical blades (i.e. failed to open) or, more likely, they were told by a fellow hunter that mechanical blades are unreliable or outright useless.
  • Any type of bowhunting requires thought put into penetration and shot placement. A skilled hunter will achieve kill after kill regardless of broadhead type with great shot placement. However, since there are blades designed specifically for turkeys, you might as well maximize your chances for success by investing in the right broadheads.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • If you ever try to bowhunt turkeys, you’ll quickly find out that the vitals are very, very small. With a fixed blade, cutting range and diameter are a lot smaller than an expandable blade. So, I was very, very surprised to see that 62% of bowhunters out there are bowhunting turkeys with fixed blades. ~AB3
  • When it comes to bowhunting, penetration and shot placement are the two things you can’t get around. ~AB3
  • You have to be pinpoint accurate to kill turkeys with headshots. Guys and gals that can kill turkeys with a headshot are a rare breed. ~AB3

Episode 115

Jacqueline Molina: Long Island Babes and Bucks

Today, AB3 speaks with Jacqueline Molina, Co-Founder and President of Long Island Babes and Bucks. She is an avid hunter and fisher who uses her platform to inspire other women to enjoy the outdoors.

Episode Highlights

  • How a native New Yorker became so passionate about hunting and the outdoors
  • Jacqueline on shed hunting
  • Deer hunting versus waterfowl hunting
  • Using a climber when hunting
  • What drew Jaqueline to ice fishing
  • The story behind Long Island Babes and Bucks

3 Key Points

  • Deer hunting and waterfowl hunting are, obviously, two very different experiences. Deer hunting is generally easier to get into and can be done alone, whereas waterfowl hunting requires a ton of preparation and gear, and it helps greatly to have guides or companions who can do a lot of the heavy lifting or share the load with you.
  • Jacqueline and a few fellow female hunter friends began Long Island Babes and Bucks in order to build a community which shows you can embrace yourself as a woman while enjoying hunting, fishing, and the outdoors in general all at the same time.
  • In order to grow the hunting community and make it more inclusive, everyone, from women to people of color, should come together to proudly represent those who look like them. When one is inspired by someone who resembles themselves out there hunting, they are empowered to have a go at it themselves.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Once I got comfortable with a climber, I absolutely refused to hang another stand in my life. I am a person of convenience and ease. If it is convenient, I’m all for it. ~AB3
  • Every man and woman that I’ve ever talked to about ice fishing swear that it’s one of the best times they ever have as far as outdoor activities. ~AB3
  • When we started Long Island Babes and Bucks, we just wanted women to see that you can be who you are and still like the outdoors. ~Jacqueline

Episode 114

COVID-19 Didn't Stop Hunters

Today, AB3 discusses the impact of COVID-19 on the hunting world one year after the beginning of nationwide lockdowns. He was inspired to speak on the topic after coming across Tyler Wolf’s column on Bowhunting.com titled “How COVID-19 Affected Hunting”.

Episode Highlights

  • Why having more free time due to the pandemic didn’t necessarily make it easier for AB3 to go hunting
  • The surge in new hunters in 2020, particularly women and young people
  • The pandemic’s negative impact on conservation efforts
  • Why the future looks bright for the hunting community and love for the outdoors in general

3 Key Points

  • More new hunters joined the ranks in 2020 than in the previous five years. That is because going out to hunt for your own food is a no-brainer after many businesses came to a standstill.
  • The numbers are up among female hunters and hunters aged between 18 and 34. Seeing more young people hunting in particular is a great sign for the sport, since it potentially ensures future generations of hunters.
  • While conservation efforts have taken a hit last year, the future looks bright. Not only will people get back on their feet, but the surge of new hunters may mean more people who see, and will work for, the value of the outdoors.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • You try to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible, but when you’ve got the unknown hanging over your head and you’re really not a “glass half full” person, it makes it hard.
  • Everybody’s always excited about the new hunters, the young hunters, because they are truly the future of the sport.
  • One good thing from COVID-19 is that it forced people to get off their asses, get outside, get outdoors, get active, and become a part of our hunting culture.

Episode 113

Scott Einsmann: Bowhunters United

Today, AB3 speaks with Scott Einsmann, Digital Manager at the Archery Trade Association (ATA). He is an avid bowhunter and competitive archer. AB3 and Scott talk all things bowhunting, their favorite recipes, and the difference between bowhunting and archery.

Episode Highlights

  • AB3 and Scott’s favorite filming adventures
  • How Scott makes his own bows
  • Archery versus bowhunting and how skills transfer over into the other
  • How to get started as an archer or bowhunter
  • All about Bowhunters United
  • Great ways to prepare wild game
  • The most exotic wild game dishes AB3 and Scott have ever had

3 Key Points

  • Archer or bowhunter? To Scott, “It depends on the time of year.” There’s competition shooting and there’s hunting. Both require different skillsets. Competing as an archer helps you work on your form and get all the technicalities of handling a bow in order, which you can then carry over into the less predictable hunting environment.
  • If you’re an aspiring archer or bowhunter, start by finding an archery shop near you. Sign up for a 30-minute archery lesson. You won’t have to buy any equipment. Your only investment into the sport so far is whatever they charge for that lesson and, usually, it’s not a ton of money. Go through the basics and see if you like it.
  • Bowhunting is for everyone. That goes for people of all races and genders as well as people of different hunting preferences (ex. public/private land, compound bow/crossbow, etc.). By extension, hunting is for everyone. With mainstream media ignoring or outright maligning hunting culture, a united hunting community is sorely needed.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • We, as a hunting population, have to stick together and work together to protect what we love and what we do. Otherwise, folks will come in to pick apart the carcass. ~AB3
  • There’s nothing like having a deer standing 15 or 20 yards away from you. You can see its breath, you can hear them crunching on corn or whatever it’s eating. To be that close—there’s nothing like it. ~AB3
  • We get very cliquey in bowhunting. You get your public land guys. You get your private land guys. “I’m a true bowhunter because I use a compound bow.” “You’re not a bowhunter if you use a crossbow.” If we just set all that aside and we think about what really matters, we can do a lot of good. ~Scott

Episode 111

Snow Goose Hunt

Today, AB3 talks about his recent feature in Voyage ATL where he shares his personal story, his vision for Bryant Land, and lessons learned along the way while building the brand. He also recounts a story he read about a high school teacher in Alaska who brought a moose he shot himself to class and taught his students how to debone, trim, and process the meat. Finally, AB3 talks about his unique experience taking part in a conservation snow goose hunt.

Episode Highlights

  • AB3 on his recent Voyage ATL feature
  • The story of a high school teacher in Alaska who had his students to break down big game in class
  • Trying raccoon for the first time
  • Taking part in a conservation snow goose hunt

3 Key Points

  • AB3’s feature in Voyage ATL is not a tear jerker, but he does speak on the many struggles of building a media brand. One of the hardest parts has been garnering support for Bryant Land through sponsors. As AB3 explains, it’s all part of the process, and it’s all a matter of putting out consistent content until your vision catches fire.
  • It’s a great sign that some schools are starting to reintroduce vocational training. For the hunting community in particular, it should be inspiring to see a high school teacher in Alaska bringing in a deer he himself hunted into his classroom for his students to break down. That by itself is a breakthrough in America’s hunting culture.
  • Going on a conservation snow goose hunt is quite a different experience from any other kind of waterfowl hunt. AB3 shares how his unique hunt went, from having to wear a stark white outfit to using an electronic call to being able to use a magazine extender.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Trying to establish a brand and trying to get the stories that you want to tell out there is tough when you don’t have the funding or the sponsors or the backing—people that don’t see your vision. Nevertheless, you keep going, you keep pushing, you keep putting your content out there.
  • People always talk about freedom; but if you try to do anything in this country without a permit, you really see what your freedom is all about.
  • How cool is it to walk into class, have a big-ass moose sitting there and, as part of the curriculum, and get to break it down and process it? That’s definitely better than dissecting a frog.

Episode 110

New Foods

Today, AB3 shares his five new food experiences. Listen in as he shares his favorite ways of preparing wild game, as well as the “wild game twists” he applied to traditional dishes such as burgers and spaghetti. He also shares his very first experience trying out coon.

Episode Highlights

  • AB3 tries out Dominican spaghetti
  • Spicing up deer burger with Lipton onion soup mix
  • Give snow goose or deer heart a try
  • For the very first time, AB3 eats coon
  • Another new favorite: Jalapeño cheddar deer sticks

5 New Food Experiences

  • Try out Dominican spaghetti. For a “wild game twist”, use venison instead of beef. Add half a teaspoon of minced garlic, chopped cilantro, very finely chopped onions, sliced red and green peppers, half a cup of milk, a teaspoon of butter, and a chicken bouillon cube. While the original recipe calls for ragù sauce, you can use a Goya or Heinz tomato sauce or paste. Use starchy water and a pasta of your choice.
  • Add an explosion of flavor to your venison burgers with Lipton onion soup mix. In a bowl, mash your ground venison with the seasoning, along with bread crumbs to hold the patty together. Alternatively, you can use an egg or pork fat instead of bread crumbs.
  • Consider trying snow goose heart. Put the heart on a hot plate and season it with salt and pepper. A friend of AB3 also mentioned that the heart is the best part of the deer. Give it a try, even if it’s just to check another unique experience off your bucket list!
  • Known to some as the “trash panda”, raccoon is actually pretty tasty when cooked properly. AB3 finally tried coon for the first time, braised for several hours with a side of sweet potatoes. He may never want to ever take part in the preparation of raccoon, but he would be more than happy to enjoy the final product!
  • Jalapeño cheddar deer sticks are, as the kids used to say, the bomb-dot-com!

Three Powerful Quotes

  • By no stretch of the imagination am I considered a food connoisseur on any level. I’m just an old country cook.
  • I know what I want. Anything that I’m paying for, I’m not experimenting with.
  • You know the old adage, “I don’t want to know how the sausage is made?” Well, I don’t want to know how the coon’s made; but I’ll take the final product.

Episode 109

Jimmy Flatt: Hunters of Color

Today, AB3 sits down with Jimmy Flatt, Founder of Hunters of Color. Listen in as Jimmy shares the road to turning Hunters of Color into a nonprofit, how the community inspires more minorities to start their hunting journey, the issue of increasing gear and permit costs and its ramifications for the future of hunting, and Jimmy’s ambitious goals for Hunters of Color in 2021.

Episode Highlights

  • How Hunters of Color came to be
  • Reconnecting people of all colors to their hunting heritage
  • The possibility of hunting eventually being confined to the upper class
  • Resident versus non-resident prices for hunting gear, tools, and permits
  • Jimmy’s goals for Hunters of Color in 2021

3 Key Points

  • The outdoors are for everybody. We were all hunters once. With the rise of urban jungles, most people have lost their affinity for the outdoors, much less hunting. But by going out and just trying out one hunt, anybody will gain a greater appreciation of where our food comes from. Along with that, a hunter who follows the rules of the game contributes to the conservation of the environment, all while being more sustainable with the way they eat.
  • Over the years, particularly due to urbanization, hunting became a rarity among Americans, to the point where the biggest demographic is white and male. One of the missions of Hunters of Color is to reconnect all Americans to their hunting heritage and shift current statistics to incorporate greater diversity, which includes women, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and even Native Americans and native Hawaiians.
  • There is a potential threat of hunting becoming an expensive activity reserved for the upper-class, much like it already is in the U.K.. One of the biggest reasons for this is the negative connotation attached to hunting in much of mainstream media. However, AB3 is confident that, with the sheer amount of hunting families still living in their own private lands all over the U.S., that threat of hunting becoming a fringe activity is at least still very far off.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Hunting is rooted deep in all of us. It’s within us all. I think the issue is that a lot of people who live in the urban jungle have become detached from where our food comes from.
  • The outdoors are for everybody and I think it’s a shame that the narrative has changed over the past few decades that they are for only one demographic of people.
  • The trajectory is that licenses will keep going up. Eventually, it’s going to be to the point where we’re all shoveling out $500 to $1000 a year just to keep doing the things that we love.

Episode 107

Scott Ellis: Turkey Talk

Today, AB3 sits down with Scott Ellis, four-time grand national champion turkey caller. Listen in as Scott shares what got him hooked on turkey hunting at the age of 10, tips for preserving your mouth calls, how to complete a Grand Slam, his turkey schnitzel recipe, and the making of his YouTube series Hunt Quest.

Episode Highlights

  • The evolution of turkey mouth calls
  • Why you need to leave your turkey mouth call in your refrigerator
  • Scott’s favorite turkey calls
  • Why Scott never uses a bow and rarely uses pop-up blinds when turkey hunting
  • Becoming a competitive turkey caller at 17
  • All about wild turkey slams
  • Scott’s go-to turkey recipe
  • Filming Hunt Quest

3 Key Points

  • Keep your turkey call in the refrigerator when not in use. A dark, cool, and controlled environment, keeping your call in the fridge preserves the life of the tape and the latex. The next best thing is to pack it in a plastic bag and keep it at room temperature. But when it comes down to it, it’s best to leave your call anywhere outside your truck to avoid heat, which will ruin the latex in a heartbeat.
  • Scott isn’t a fan of using pop-up blinds in turkey hunting because it locks you in, movement-wise, and also tends to muffle the sound of the mouth call. Additionally, when it comes to getting your kids into hunting, it’s better to get them moving around in the woods as soon as possible rather than keeping them confined in a pop-up blind. The only way the “hunting gene” will have a chance to present itself is if the kid is proactive or fully engaged.
  • If you’re looking to get into turkey hunting, the first thing to do is to find somebody locally who is already in the game. Check out Scott’s YouTube channel, “Hunt Quest with Scott Ellis”, for a series of instructionals on all things turkey hunting and calling. Scott also has an app called Turkey Tech, which offers a comprehensive, in-depth look at a variety of hunting situations and how to proceed based on the sound the wild turkey makes.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • I probably carry 50 mouth calls in the woods. I change calls religiously because that latex gets saturated with saliva in five to ten minutes, which makes it lose the sound quality.
  • I don’t know how many turkeys I’ve killed in my lifetime, but I know I’ve probably killed 90% of them just sitting at the base of a tree.
  • If you have to make a kid get into a pop-up blind to get them into hunting, there’s a very good possibility that it’s never going to stick.

Episode 106

Jimal McBride: 100 Years of Hunting

Today, AB3 sits down with Jimal McBride, a hunter specializing in coondogs and coon hunting. Listen in as Jimal shares his family’s 100-year-old coon hunting tradition, his tips for finding and training a new coondog, and the McBride way of cooking coons.

Episode Highlights

  • Jimal speaks on McBride coon hunting family tradition going back 100 years
  • Why you need to start with a puppy as opposed to an older dog
  • Creating a bond with your new coondog
  • Scent training with a puppy
  • When to turn your coondog loose
  • The McBride’s go-to recipe when cooking coons

3 Key Points

  • When getting a new coondog, find a puppy between six to eight weeks old. Great coon hunts depend on a great relationship between man and dog. Older dogs are already set in their ways. By taking your time to find a puppy, you can really focus on finding a dog that you like and are willing to put time into so that you can create a bond over time. Teach them basic commands at first, then start scent training in the evenings at two-and-a-half months.
  • Take your coondog into the woods at around six months. Ultimately, the time you let them loose will be at the time you feel most comfortable. You nurtured a bond with your coondog, after all. A good sign that they’re ready is if your young dog starts following the older, more experienced dog once you set them down in the woods. But if they just end up playing instead of following the older dog, you probably need to wait and train them a bit longer.
  • Having a coondog with you on your coon hunt doesn’t guarantee a kill. Coons know the layout of their environment, and will run through streams and shrubs to shake off their scent. They can also get away by digging and hiding away in holes. Your job as a hunter, once your coondog identifies the coon and is on its trail, is to stop the coon before it hides away.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Get a dog that you like to look at. If you don’t like looking at that dog, you’re wasting your time. ~Jimal
  • Coons are hell on turkeys. They’re almost as bad as coyotes when it comes to turkey nests. ~AB3
  • That’s why they call it hunting—every time you go out, there ain’t no guarantee you’re going to come back full. A lot of times, you’re going to come back empty-handed. ~AB3

Episode 105

Brian Maddox: Run to Daylight

Today, AB3 sits down with Brian Maddox, an amazing crossbow and bowhunter who he’s hunted with on many occasions. In this conversation, the two catch up and discuss Brian’s hunting adventures in the last several months of an incredibly challenging year.

Episode Highlights

  • Killing seven deer this season all with a bow while filming it all
  • Why Brian got into filming his hunts
  • Best practices when filming your hunts
  • Getting comfortable using climbing treestands
  • Will Brian carry a bow this turkey season?

3 Key Points

  • There’s something special about bow hunting. Unlike using a rifle, managing with a bow requires focus and coordination like nothing else. Find a bow that you like and get comfortable with it. You definitely don’t want to be switching to the newest, hottest bow that comes out on a regular basis just because it’s the newest and hottest. As AB3 says, if you’ve got yourself a comfortable bow that shoots well, there’s really no reason to “upgrade”.
  • Consider filming your hunts. It’s a great learning experience that shows you clearly—after the heat of the moment is over—what worked and what didn’t. What’s more, having video on can give you alternate angles during your hunt. It’s a complicated practice to incorporate into your hunts, where there are already many factors to focus on as it is. But it may just be worth it to your growth as a hunter.
  • Everyone has their own comfort level when using a climber. Find yours and don’t sweat it if it doesn’t quite fit what’s “standard”. AB3 simply can’t go above 17 feet, when a number of his fellow hunters go almost double that. Repetition increases comfort, and it pays to stretch your limit on a climber if it leads to better hunts. But whatever negatively affects your comfort and ability to stay focused during your hunts is never worth the price of the tool.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • I love bow hunting because it’s so challenging and shot placement is key. ~Brian
  • Once you get a bow that you like that’s comfortable and shoots well, I say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. ~AB3
  • If I can’t kill a deer at 15 or 17 feet on a climber, they deserve to live. ~AB3

Episode 94 “Jared Larsen: OnX Hunt”

Today, AB3 sits down with Jared Larsen of OnX Hunt to discuss a wide variety of topics, from the magic of TechnoHUNT, to the unique hunting culture of Wisconsin, to hard truths regarding how to sharpen your skills as a hunter, to how the OnX Hunt app is the best tool available to the beginning hunter.

Episode Highlights

  • How TechnoHunt can help elevate your skills
  • Bow versus rifle hunting
  • Achieving mastery as a hunter by doing your time in the woodsand failing fast
  • Why waterfowlers are a completely different breed of hunter
  • Jared’s favorite features on the OnX Hunt app
  • The benefits of OnX’s Offroad app

3 Key Points

  • When you pick up a bow to go archery hunting, accept the fact that something, sometime is going to go wrong. No hunter in their right mind enjoys maiming an animal or watching it suffer, but no amount of training will completely eliminate the chances of you taking the wrong shot at some point in your hunting career.
  • The “last frontier” of being a hunter is actually taking the shot. Before getting to that point, you have to build up the skills and the woodsmanship you need to be able to find your animals in the first place. AB3 notes that “even trail cameras only tell a quarter of the story.” Nothing is guaranteed; not even if you do food plotting or set bait. Reading books and surfing hunting forums all day ain’t going to cut it. You need to do your time in the woodsand fail fastto sharpen your skills and increase your affinity with the natural environment around you.
  • If you’re looking to explore the OnX Hunt app, consider these highly praised features by OnX Hunt marketing specialist Jared: the ability to share waypointsto fellow hunters who are looking to enter your neck of the woods at different points in time; as well as the tracker featureto mark trees and make sure that, when heading to your stand, your entrance and exit strategies are on point. There is no better tool for the beginning hunter to understand where they can legally hunt and recreate outdoors than the Hunt app. “It takes the uncomfortability out of hunting,” notes Jared.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Don’t think about where that arrow is going to enter; think about where that arrow is going to exit. ~Jared
  • There is no game of chasing your tail more than hunting. ~Jared
  • If I’m a critter, I want to get shot by a human, because that is going to be the most humane way for me to go. Between starving to death, getting ripped apart by coyotes, freezing to death, and getting hit by a well-aimed arrow—give me the arrow any time of the day. ~Jared

Today, AB3 sits down with Lisa Ballard, writer, photographer, Emmy Award-winning TV producer and host, filmmaker, coach, product consultant, champion skier, and avid outdoorswoman. AB3 also talks about his recent SNAFU involving a broken foot and how he is currently coping.

Episode Highlights

  • How a deep love for the outdoors since her youth influenced everything in Lisa’s multidimensional life and career
  • What it’s like to be a professional skier for over three decades
  • Why professional athletes tend to gravitate toward hunting
  • The challenges of big game hunting versus upland hunting

3 Key Points

  • One of the great rewards of hunting, beyond the kill itself, is the physical, mental, and emotional growth that comes out of every hunt. Comparing it to professional skiing, Lisa puts particular emphasis on failed attempts on the slope and on the trail, saying that each failure presents a teachable moment and an opportunity to become better in the next attempt.
  • Consider hunting on horseback. It adds a completely new dimension to this amazing outdoor experience, not to mention the convenience you’ll have by being able to stow your kills on your horse—a huge help for big game hunting in particular.
  • If you want to make a living doing what you love, go for it. Some people unfortunately believe that if you’re having too much fun and have too much passion for what you do, then you’re not really working. Lisa proves that this isn’t true. To get to where she is today, Lisa had to employ tremendous amounts of focus, discipline, and sacrifice over the decades. She absolutely loves what she does as an outdoorswoman, but she had to put in the sweat equity to make it into a real career.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • Whenever I go outside, it’s the journey as much as the goal that’s really important. ~Lisa
  • I really enjoy hunting for that moment where it’s full concentration, yet you can’t be tight. You’ve got to be loose and lucid enough to be skilful. It’s all about balance. I think hunting is really similar to skiing in that sense. ~Lisa
  • If you love what you do, it almost doesn’t seem like work because you’re in a place where you want to be. If you’re trying to be successful, you’re working. It’s not just handed to you on a silver platter. ~AB3

Episode 92: "Hunting Gadgets"

Now more than ever, there are a ton of bow hunting gadgets available on the market. While AB3 tells us that he’s all about staying cutting edge, by the same token, he’s a firm believer in packing light. Today, he talks about the two gadgets that he never leaves home and goes into the woods without.

Episode Highlights

  • Finding a system that works for you
  • The many benefits of bringing your phone with you in the woods
  • How rangefinders save you time during hunting season
  • Gadgetsversus equipment

Two Essential Gadgets to Bring on Your Hunt

  1. Cellphone. Besides the obvious benefit of being able to stay in touch with the rest of the world, particularly in the case of an emergency, having a cellphone with you in the woods also allows you to check useful tools such as a compass and flashlight, and apps for deer forecasting, weather, and mapping (AB3 personally uses the onX Hunt App).
  2. Rangefinder. Traditional bowhunters tend to do without one; but AB3 prefers the accuracy of a good rangefinder, and to him, it’s a lifesaver. Deer, after all, are particularly unpredictable animals. AB3 ranges areas, and as long as a deer shows up within range of that area, his bow will be ready.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • I like the latest and greatest. I like things that are going to make doing things easier. But, I’m also a firm believer in packing light.
  • There’s room for everything and everybody. You can do things your own way. No one person is an expert. At the end of the day, you have to find what works for you, what system you’re comfortable with, what gadgets you want to take along.
  • For those of you who don’t use gadgets, more power to you. I applaud and appreciate the fact that you have that level of skill. I don’t have that level of skill yet, so I’m going to use gadgets that will help me be successful.

Episode 91

Josh Crumpton: The Sporting Diversity Road Tour

AB3 once again welcomes Josh Crumpton, founder of Spoke Hollow Outfitters. Following the death of George Floyd and amid the issue of racism that America was then forced to contend with, Josh and a friend had the idea to sponsor a road trip to “lead by example” in promoting diversity across America. 30 participants and 20 sponsors (and counting) later, the Sporting Diversity Road Tour 2020 is underway.

Listen in as AB3 and Josh discuss how he intends to “make noise” through the Sporting Diversity Road trip in order to promote diversity, inclusion, and conservation while celebrating all that the outdoors has to offer.

Episode Highlights

  • Josh’s itinerary for the Sporting Diversity Road Tour
  • A primer on camping on Bureau of Land Management (public) land
  • Discussing diversity on the trail and how the Sporting Diversity Tour came to be
  • What first-time fly fishers need to know before starting

Three Key Points

  • It has taken a horrible incident that is George Floyd’s death to ignite the much-needed conversation around racism in America; but it doesn’t take much for individuals to do their part in addressing this issue. The idea for the Sporting Diversity Tour was planted during a conversation with a friend over beers following Blackout Tuesday, and this idea eventually snowballed into the official, exciting initiative that is taking place today.
  • The best teachers are not necessarily the best at their craft (and vice versa). But that doesn’t matter. An instructor’s job is to guide and inspire others to become the best they can be in what they’re teaching them to do.
  • When the traditional marketing machine targets a specific demographic for decades, it naturally leads to the exclusion of others who don’t look like that target market. For the diverse population, hunting in America has always been presented as a white man’s activity. To give more people of both genders and all racial backgrounds the confidence to take part in this world, the diverse community as a whole must get together and have these important conversations which, eventually, will overpower the mainstream message.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • We’re looking for sponsors, not to write us checks, because we’re going to do this trip anyway. We’re looking for sponsors to help us amplify our voices and spread our message.
  • The guides in the world are not necessarily the best. What they are is the best at teaching other people to do it.
  • This road trip isn’t about catching the biggest fish or being the best fly fisher or having the heaviest bag at the end of the day. This is a journey about inspiration. I hope people are inspired to know that no matter what you look like or where you come from or how much money you have, there is a way to figure out how to get out here and do this.

AB3 isn’t one to squander opportunities. One deer season, however, would come to haunt him for days to come when a bit of impatience forced him to leave the woods empty-handed. This experience reminded him that going on a hunt is an experience that requires your full attention, free of all distractions. Living in a fast-paced world where we’re so used to instant gratification, it’s never been more important to make sure that you enter the hunt with a clear, tranquil mind and with the purpose to decompress and recharge. That means no phones while waiting in the stand—no fantasy football, either!

Listen in as AB3 relates his hard-hitting failed hunt and lessons learned as a result, the issue of racism and prejudice towards hutners of color, and what we can possibly conclude from rising gun sales all around the country.

Episode Highlights

  • The importance of going into a hunt free from the distractions of the modern world
  • AB3’s favorite time to hunt to minimize mind clutter
  • An important message to hunters of color, and how to overcome perceived challenges
  • Why gun sales and the desire for self-sufficiency are rising in America

Three Key Points

  • Get rid of distractions! Whenever you go on a hunt—whether it be deer, duck, quail, turkey, goose, hog, etc.—remember that part of the joy is the opportunity to get away from it all.
  • With hunting numbers going down, particularly for minorities, check your prejudices. If people stubbornly hold fast to their preconceived notions regarding who they think should be out there hunting, the number of hunters will only continue to decline as intolerance rises.
  • There are a number of reasons why gun sales around the country have been going up, and a greater appreciation for self-sufficiency is taking place. But whatever the case may be for different individuals, it’s a great thing in the long run for more Americans to realize the need for self-defense and the ability to produce their own resources.

Three Powerful Quotes

  • One thing I learned about deer hunting: It ain’t over till it’s over.
  • Stay ready; keep your stuff ready; ‘cause you never know when it’s gonna go down.
  • If you people are continuously running folks away because of the high horses that you sit on about what really is and isn’t hunting because of these racist, conservative attitudes that you have, I’m going to tell you, there’s not going to be any hunting left for any of us. The damn thing is going to die out, and you will have nothing to blame but the hatred in your cold, black hearts.

We’ve returned with Jonathan from Black Duck Revival. You may remember him from episode 7. Since then he has been keeping busy both with a newborn, the Black Duck Revival bungalows and creating more delicious recipes from the wild.

This past turkey season Jonathan said he learned patience. He had an opportunity at kill had he remained position for an extra 30 minutes. He has been focused on showing the dexterity in the wild food game. He forages with his family and creates recipes and meals out of what he’s found.

He likes to show food that’s delicious and interesting. He shares some different ideas to forage some food sources like nuts and edible flowers. He believes it’s important to harvest for yourself. It makes you healthier and you have better relationships with others.

Jonathan spends a lot of time in the woods conducting field identification and understanding what the animals are feeding on. If you know where the food source is it means you know where the animals are and that makes you a better hunter. We get deep about what it means to take hunting to the next level. He created a syllabus to help those who are interested in becoming proficient at field craft and woodsman ship.

There is no lack of information. Black Duck Revival is about bringing non-traditional hunters from various backgrounds and from various places in the States. He believes it’s important to gain experiences from people who are not like you.

Patrick Durkin of Waupaca, Wisconsin, is an award-winning outdoor writer, newspaper columnist, and general outdoors reporter. He also provides editing services for books and magazines.

He was a contributing editor of the Archery Trade Association and writes frequently for national archery and hunting magazines. In addition, he has been MeatEater's wildlife research contributor since June 2018, and an editor for Inside Archery magazine, an archery industry trade publication, since December 2014.

Durkin has written a weekly outdoors newspaper column since 1984. His weekly column has appeared regularly in over 20 Wisconsin newspapers during his career. His magazine articles have appeared in several publications such as the American Hunter, Outdoor Life, Bugle (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation), Quality Whitetails, Whitetail Journal, etc.

It’s no secret there is a lack of participation in the hunting industry by people of color. The lack of representation of people of color in the hunting industry is what led Durkin to become curious about this issue. It led him to ask the question is hunting too White?

As a result of this curiosity he wrote an article "Is Hunting Too White?". As a Black hunter I'm always asked if I'm fearful of hunting with White men with guns. Some hunting outfitters have their names with the word plantation on it without realizing how that impacts people. Frankly, hunting is a test on how well you get along with people, especially when you're sitting in a blind.

We discussed some things that need to change so hunting can be more inclusive. Organizations are entering more cities to reach more Black and Latino children. Durkin recognizes there are lots of things he doesn't have to think about because of his position in the world. Not everyone has access to land, rivers and different places to hunt and fish. This is a thoughtful discussion about a touchy subject.

This week our conversation is with YouTuber and hunter DJ Jones. We spend some time talking about his transition into and out of playing football at the college level. When his football career ended abruptly, he found more time for hunting.

Being an outdoorsman is a family tradition for DJ. His uncle used to take him hunting unbeknownst to his father. He fell in love with hunting. But he mostly grew up deer dog hunting in Florida and then later was introduced to hog hunting.

He harvested his first buck in Minnesota. This buck weighed about 189 lbs with 9 scorable points. DJ shoots his own hunting videos in which he published on his social media channel BlackBillOutdoors. The recovery of that buck gained over 10,000 views on YouTube. As a result of his social media presence he is now an ambassador for the Legendary Whitetails.

We spend some time discussing the adjustment from living in Florida to Minnesota. The rules of hunting in MN are much different than FL. DJ also shares with us why hunting on public land isn’t his favorite option. He’s excited to travel to more states to hunt more species specifically the black bear and mule deer.

This interview is a bit different. It’s an in person interview with a self-taught renowned taxidermist. With state, national, international and world championship awards Dave Polak has been a trusted authority for professional and artistic taxidermy services for over 25 years. He does quality work using the best materials.

Dave specializes in Custom African and life size mounts, specialty bird mounts, rugs, mammals, deer, birds, fish, shoulder mounts, pedestals with habitat and cabinet bases. With the amount of knowledge that Dave has acquired he also teaches others how to do the same.

We get into his taxidermy business where Dave provides great advice for those who want to get into the business but also shares some things to consider when you’re looking for a taxidermist for yourself.

Recently, he finished a cougar hunt but he also enjoys bear hunts. Most of these kinds of hunts require strength and endurance. And of course, lots of patience.

Sometimes you’re in the woods for days and other times you kill your prey a lot quicker than you think. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of hiking and waiting involved in the wild. Therefore, if this is something you’d like to add to your hunting repertoire then tune in.
