1 Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore; Mortals, give thanks and sing, And triumph evermore: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. 2 Jesus, The Saviour, reigns, The God of truth and love; When He had purged our stains, He took His seat above: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. 3 His kingdom cannot fail; He rules o’er earth and heaven; The keys of death and hell Are to our Jesus given: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. 4 He sits at God’s right hand Till all His foes submit, And bow to His command, And fall beneath His feet: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
On this episode we have a conversation with Pastor Edgar Mayer of Living Grace Church in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia
1 See, the Conqueror mounts in triumph, See the King in royal state, Riding on the clouds, His chariot, To His heavenly palace gate! Hark! The choirs of angel voices Joyful hallelujahs sing, And the portals high are lifted To receive their heavenly King. 2 Who is this that comes in glory, With the trump of jubilee? Lord of battles, God of armies, He has gained the victory. He who on the cross did suffer, He who from the grave arose, He has vanquished sin and Satan, He by death has spoiled His foes. 3 While He lifts His hands in blessing, He is parted from His friends; While their eager eyes behold Him, He upon the cloud ascends; He who walked with God and pleased Him, Preaching truth and doom to come, He, our Enoch, is translated To His everlasting home. 4 Now our heavenly Aaron enters, With His blood, within the veil’ Joshua now is come to Canaan, And the kings before Him quail; Now He plants the tribes of Israel In their promised resting-place; Now our great Elijah offers Double portion of His grace. 5 Thou hast raised our human nature On the clouds to God’s right hand; There we sit in heavenly places, There with Thee in glory stand. Jesus reigns, adored by angels, Man with God is on the throne; Mighty Lord, in Thine ascension We by faith behold our own.
1 Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne; Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns All music but its own; Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King Through all eternity. 2 Crown Him the Son of God Before the world began; And ye, who tread where He hath trod, Crown Him the Son of man, Who every grief hath known that wrings the human breast, And takes and bears them for His own, That all in Him may rest. 3 Crown Him, the Lord of love; Behold His hands and side, Those wounds yet visible above In beauty glorified: All hail, Redeemer, Hail! For Thou hast died for me; Thy praise shall never, never fail Throughout eternity. 4 Crown Him the Lord of life, Who triumphed o’er the grave, And rose victorious in the strife For those He came to save: His glories now we sing Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring, And lives that death may die. 5 Crown Him the Lord of heaven, Enthroned in worlds above; Crown Him the King to whom is given The wondrous name of Love: Crown Him with many crowns As thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, For He is King of all.

1 Hail, Thou once despised Jesus, Hail, Thou Galilean King! Thou didst suffer to release us, Thou didst free salvation bring. Hail, Thou agonising Saviour, Bearer of our sin and shame; By Thy merits we find favour; Life is given through Thy name. 2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, All our sins on Thee were laid; By almighty love anointed, Thou hast full atonement made: All Thy people are forgiven Through the virtue of Thy blood; Opened is the gate of heaven; Peace is made ’twixt man and God. 3 Jesus, hail! Enthroned in glory, There for ever to abide; All the heavenly hosts adore Thee, Seated at Thy Father’s side. There for sinners Thou art pleading; There Thou dost our place prepare, Ever for us interceding, Till in glory we appear. 4 Worship, honour, power, and blessing, Thou art worthy to receive; Loudest praises without ceasing Meet it is for us to give. Help, ye bright angelic spirits, Bring your sweetest, noblest lays; Help to sing our Saviour’s merits, Help to chant Immanuel’s praise.

1 Hail the day that sees Him rise. Alleluia! To His throne above the skies: Alleluia! Christ, the Lamb for sinners given, Alleluia! Enters now the highest heaven. Alleluia! 2 There for Him high triumph waits; Lift your heads, eternal gates; He has conquered death and sin; Take the King of glory in. 3 Lo, the heaven its Lord receives, Yet He loves the earth He leaves; Though returning to His throne, Still He calls mankind His own. 4 See, He lifts His hands above; See, He shows the prints of love; Hark, His gracious lips bestow Blessings on His Church below. 5 Still for us He intercedes, His prevailing death He pleads, Near Himself prepares our place, He the first-fruits of our race. 6 Lord, though parted from our sight, Far above the starry height, Grant our hearts may thither rise, Seeking Thee above the skies.
1 Conquering Prince and King of glory, Majesty enthroned in light: All the heavens are bowed before Thee, Far beyond them spreads Thy might. Shall I now, enraptured gazing, At Thy feet fall prostrate, praising, When mine eyes, by faith alight, Mark Thy glory and Thy might? 2 As I watch Thee far ascending To the right hand of the throne, See how hosts, their voices blending, Sing their praise to Thee alone: Shall I not fall down before Thee, And with joyful heart adore Thee, When the heavens exultant ring With the triumph of my King? 3 Power and Spirit are o’erflowing, On me also be they poured; Every hindrance overthrowing, Make Thy foes Thy footstool, Lord. O’er the earth, O Judah’s Lion, Send the sceptre out of Zion, Spread Thy sway from sea to sea, Till the earth acknowledge Thee. 4 Lo, Thy presence now is filling All the Church in every place; Fill my heart, and make it willing To receive Thee in Thy grace. Come, O come, Thou King of glory, Stablish Thy dominion o’er me, Live in me and reign alone, As upon Thy heavenly throne.
Rev. Jake discusses the Book of Revelation, the Mark of the Beast and the Covid 19 Vaccination
1 Draw us to Thee; For then shall we Walk in Thy steps for ever, And hasten on Where Thou art gone, To be with Thee, dear Saviour. 2 Draw is to Thee, Lord, lovingly; Let us depart with gladness, That we may be For ever free From sorrow, grief, and sadness. 3 Draw is to Thee; O grant that we May walk the road to heaven; Direct our way, Lest we should stray, And from Thy paths be driven. 4 Draw us to Thee; That also we Thy heavenly bliss inherit, And ever dwell Where sin and hell No more can vex our spirit. 5 Draw us to Thee Unceasingly; Into Thy kingdom take us; Let us for e’er Thy glory share; Thy saints and joint-heirs make us.
1 The Lord ascendeth up on high, The Lord hath triumphed gloriously, In power and might excelling; The grave and hell are captive led, Lo, He returns, our glorious head, To His eternal dwelling. 2 The heavens with joy receive their Lord, By saints, by angel hosts adored; O day of exultation! O earth, adore thy glorious King, His rising, His ascension sing, With grateful adoration. 3 Our great High Priest now goes before, Upon His Church His grace to pour, And still His love He giveth: O may our hearts to Him ascend; May all within us upward tend To Him who ever liveth.

1 Lo, God to heaven ascendeth! Throughout its regions vast With shouts triumphant blendeth The trumpet’s thrilling blast; Sing praise to Christ the Lord; Sing praise with exultation, Great King of every nation, The God of hosts adored. 2 With joy is heaven resounding, Christ’s glad return to see; Behold the saints surrounding The Lord, who set them free; Bright myriads thronging come, The cherub band rejoices, And loud seraphic voices Their sovereign welcome home. 3 No more the way is hidden, Since Christ our head arose: No more to man forbidden The road that heavenward goes. Our Lord is gone before, Yet here He will not leave us, But soon in heaven receive us; He opens wide the door. 4 May we, His servants, thither In heart and mind ascend; And let us sing together; We seek Thee, Christ our friend; Thee, God’s exalted Son, Our life, our way to heaven, To whom all power is given, Our joy, our hope, our crown. 5 O when shall come the dawning Of that appointed hour, Of that all-glorious morning When Christ shall come with power? O quickly come, we pray, That we, dear Lord, may meet Thee, With loving fervour greet Thee, And hail the eternal day.

1 Since Christ is gone to heaven, His home, I know that I will follow; And in this hope I overcome All anguish, doubt, and sorrow. For where the head is, will I know, The members He has left below In time He surely gathers. 2 Since Christ hath reached His glorious throne And gifts for men obtaineth, My heart can rest in heaven alone, No other rest remaineth. I long to be with Him on high; My heart and thoughts would ever fly To Him who is my treasure. 3 From Thy ascension let such grace To me, O Lord, be given, That steadfast faith may guide my ways Unfaltering up to heaven, And at Thy voice I may depart With joy to dwell where Thou, Lord, art: O hear my supplication.

1 Awake, my heart, thy praises sing To Christ, thy risen Lord and King! Stone, seal, and watch were all in vain, Christ broke the bonds of death in twain. So lift thy voice in triumph high, Thy Saviour lives, thou shalt not die. Thy praises ever sing To Christ, thy risen King. 2 Awake, my heart, awake, rejoice, And sing to Him with gladsome voice. Who rose triumphant from the dead, And all our foes has captive led. Resplendent He in glory lives And peace to all His people gives. Thy praises ever sing To Christ, thy risen King. 3 Awake, my heart, away with gloom; Thy sins are buried in the tomb. Thy Saviour as thy surety died, And thou through Him art justified. Exult, and dry away all tears, And banish unbelieving fears, Thy praises ever sing To Christ, thy risen King. 4 Awake, my heart, no longer fear; In death’s dark hour thy King is near, E’en though His saints on earth must die, He leads to mansions in the sky. To Him thy lifeless body trust, For He will raise thy slumbering dust. Thy praises ever sing To Christ, thy risen King. 5 Awake, my heart, His triumph tell, Who burst the bonds of death and hell. Doubt not His mighty power to save, Look, and behold His empty grave. With joy His mighty deeds acclaim, And spread abroad the Victor’s name. Thy praises ever sing To Christ, thy risen King.

1 I know that my Redeemer lives; What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, He lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living head. 2 He lives triumphant from the grave, He lives eternally to save; He lives all-glorious in the sky, He lives exalted there on high. 3 He lives to bless me with His love, He lives to plead for me above, He lives my hungry soul to feed, He lives to help in time of need. 4 He lives, my kind, wise, heavenly Friend, He lives and loves me to the end, He lives, and while He lives, I’ll sing; He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King. 5 He lives, and grants me daily breath; He lives, and I shall conquer death; He lives my mansion to prepare, He lives to bring me safely there. 6 He lives, all glory to His name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same; O the sweet joy this sentences gives: I know that my Redeemer lives!

1 Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hearts to heaven and voices raise; Sing to God a hymn of gladness, Sing to God a hymn of praise; He who on the cross a victim For the world’s salvation bled, Jesus Christ, the King of glory, Now is risen from the dead. 2 Christ is risen, Christ the first-fruits Of the holy harvest field, Which will all its full abundance At His second coming yield, Then the golden ears of harvest Will their heads before Him wave, Ripened by His glorious sunshine, From the furrows of the grave. 3 Christ is risen, we are risen; Shed upon us heavenly grace. Rain and dew and gleams of glory From the brightness of Thy face; That we, Lord, with hearts in heaven, Here on earth may fruitful be, And by angel hands be gathered, And be ever safe with Thee. 4 Hallelujah, hallelujah! Glory be to God on high; Hallelujah to the Saviour, Who has gained the victory: Hallelujah to the Spirit, Fount of love and sanctity; Hallelujah, hallelujah To the Triune Majesty.

1 Awake, my heart, rejoicing, Behold a wondrous sight, How after gloom and sorrow Comes forth a glorious light. My Saviour’s body lay Where we shall rest that day When, borne to realms of light, Our spirit wings its flight. 2 The foe in triumph shouted When Christ lay in the tomb; But soon his hopes were shattered, His boast was turned to gloom. For Christ again is free In glorious victory; A hero strong to save, He triumphed o’er the grave. 3 Defeated and o’erpowered, The prince of hell there lies; His deadly raging silenced, No more can he arise. The Lord now has hell’s key, He who triumphantly The power of death laid low, And holds in bonds the foe. 4 Now when I view this triumph, My heart is filled with joy; There is no power to harm me. Naught can my hope destroy. For me there is a prize, Laid up in Paradise, Which Christ, the risen Lord, Shall all His saints accord. 5 For ever as a member I cling to Christ, the head, And whither He shall lead me I follow unafraid. Through toil and pain and grief, In all to Him I cleave; Through sorrow, death, and night, Christ is my shield and light.
1 Welcome, Thou Victor in the strife, Now welcome from the grave! Today we triumph in Thy life, For Thou art strong to save. 2 The dwellings of the just resound With songs of victory; For in their midst, Lord, Thou art found, And bringest peace with Thee. 3 O share with us the spoils we pray, Thou didst for us achieve; We meet within Thy house today Our portion to receive. 4 We die with Thee, O let us live Henceforth to Thee aright; The blessings Thou hast died to give Be daily in our sight. 5 Fearless we lay us in the tomb And sleep the night away, For Thou art there to break the gloom And call us back to day. 6 Death hurts us not; his power is gone, And pointless all his darts; Now has God’s favour on us shone, And joy fills all our hearts.

1 O death, where is thy cruel sting? O grave, how canst thou harm us? Thou Satan rage, what evil thing Can hurt us or alarm us? All praise to God, the battle’s done, A great and glorious victory won Through Jesus Christ, our Saviour. 2 How furiously the serpent raged As he with Christ contended, With might and guile the battle waged; But now his rule is ended. Though sore he bruised the Saviour’s heel, No final death blow could he deal; His head is bruised for ever. 3 Our Saviour, Jesus Christ, was dead, But lo, again He liveth; And to His members, as their head, Eternal life He giveth. Whoe’er believeth Christ’s own word From death and grave shall be restored, And live, although he dieth. 4 If daily we to Christ draw near In faith and true repentance, We live to Him, and need not fear The second death’s dread sentence; For death is shorn of all its powers, And righteousness and peace are ours, And ours the life immortal. 5 Great Easter spoils we now possess That Christ hath won and given: True peace and joy and righteousness On earth and then in heaven. In patient hope we here abide Till we, like Him, are glorified, And dwell with Him for ever.

Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Dalby, Qld, Australia on John 1:43-51
1 Ere yet the dawn has filled the skies, Behold my Saviour Christ arise. He drives away our sins’ dark night, And brings us joy and life and light. Hallelujah! 2 O stronger Thou than death and hell, Where is the foe Thou canst not quell? What heavy stone Thou canst not roll From off the prisoned, anguished soul? Hallelujah! 3 If Jesus lives, can I be sad? I know He loves me, and am glad; Though all the world were dead to me, Enough, O Christ, if I have Thee. Hallelujah! 4 He feeds me, comforts, and defends; And when I die His angel sends To bear me whither He is gone, For of His own He loses none. Hallelujah! 5 No more to fear or grief I bow, God and the angels love me now; The joys prepared for me today Drive fear and mourning far away. Hallelujah! 6 Strong champion! For this comfort see The whole world brings her thanks to Thee; And once we too shall raise above More sweet and loud the song we love. Hallelujah!

Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on John 1:1-18
1 Christ the Lord is risen today: Christians, haste your vows to pay; Offer ye your praises meet At the paschal victim’s feet. For the sheep the Lamb has bled, Sinless in the sinner’s stead. “Christ is risen!” today we cry; Now He lives no more to die. 2 Christ, the victim undefiled, Man to God has reconciled; Whilst in strange and awful strife Met together death and life. Christians, on this happy day Haste with joy your vows to pay. “Christ is risen!” today we cry; Now He lives no more to die. 3 Christ, who once for sinners bled, Now the first-born from the dead, Throned in endless might and power, Lives and reigns for evermore. Hail, eternal hope on high! Hail, Thou King of victory! Hail, Thou prince of life adored! Help and save us, gracious Lord.
1 Christ the Lord is risen again; Christ has broken every chain. Hark, the angels shout for joy, Singing evermore on high, Hallelujah! 2 He who gave for us His life, Who for us endured the strife, Is our paschal Lamb today; We too sing for joy, and say, Hallelujah! 3 He who bore all pain and loss Comfortless upon the cross Lives in glory now on high, Pleads for us, and hears our cry. Hallelujah! 4 He who slumbered in the grave Is exalted now to save; Now through Christendom it rings That the Lamb is King of kings. Hallelujah! 5 Now He bids us tell abroad How the lost may be restored, How the penitent forgiven, How we too may enter heaven. Hallelujah! 6 Thou our paschal Lamb indeed, Christ, today Thy people feed; Take our sins and guilt away, That we all may sing for aye, Hallelujah!
On this episode Rev. Jake Zabel discusses the upcoming 2020 Queensland Election and the pro-life policies of the different political parties
1 Christ Jesus lay in death’s strong bands, For our offences given; But now at God’s right hand He stands, And brings us life from heaven; Wherefore let us joyful be, And sing to God right thankfully Our songs of hallelujah. Hallelujah! ‘ 2 It was a strange and dreadful strife When life and death contended; The victory remained with life, The reign of death was ended; Holy Scripture clearly saith That death is swallowed up by death, His sting is lost for ever. Hallelujah! 3 Here the true paschal Lamb we see, Whom God so freely gave us; He died on the accursed tree- So strong His love! - to save us. See, His blood doth mark our door, Faith points to it, death passes o’er, The murderer cannot harm us. Hallelujah! 4 So let us keep the festival Whereto the Lord invites us; Christ is Himself the joy of all, The sun that warms and lights us. By His grace He doth impart Eternal sunshine to the heart; The night of sin is ended. Hallelujah! 5 Then let us keep the feast today That God Himself hath given, And His pure Word shall do away The old and evil leaven; Christ alone our souls can feed, He is our meat and drink indeed; Our faith would seek no other. Hallelujah!

1 Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day. Alleluia Who did once, upon the cross, Alleluia Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia 2 Hymns of praise then let us sing Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Who endured the cross and grave, Sinners to redeem and save. 3 But the pains which He endured Our salvation have procured; Now above the sky He’s King, Where the angels ever sing.
1 Ride on, ride on in majesty! Hark, all the tribes Hosanna cry! O Saviour meek, pursue Thy road With palms and scattered garments strowed. 2 Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin, O’er captive death and conquered sits. 3 Ride on, ride on in majesty! The angel armies of the sky Look down with sad and wondering eyes To see the approaching sacrifice. 4 Ride on, ride on in majesty! Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh; The Father on His sapphire throne Awaits His own anointed Son. 5 Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain, Then take, O God, Thy power, and reign.

1 All glory, laud, and honour To Thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. Thou art the King of Israel, Thou David’s royal Son, Who in the Lord’s name comest, The King and blessed one. 2 The company of angels Are praising Thee on high, And mortal men and all things Created make reply. The people of the Hebrews With palms before Thee went; Our praise and prayer and anthems Before Thee we present. 3 To Thee before Thy passion They sang their hymns of praise; To Thee now high exalted Our melody we raise. Thou didst accept their praises; Accept the prayers we bring, Who in all good delightest, Thou good and gracious King. 4 All glory, laud, and honour To Thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. 1 According to Thy gracious word, In meek humility This will I do, my dying Lord, I will remember Thee. 2 Thy body, given for my sake, Thy blood, once shed for me, These are the gifts I humbly take, And here remember Thee. 3 Gethsemane can I forget? Or there Thy conflict see, Thine agony and bloody sweat, And not remember Thee? 4 When to the cross I turn mine eyes And rest on Calvary, O Lamb of God, my sacrifice, I must remember Thee: 5 Remember Thee, and all Thy pains, And all Thy love to me; Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains, Will I remember Thee. 6 And when these failing lips grow dumb, And mind and memory flee, When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come, O Lord, remember me.

1 There is a green hill far away, Without a city wall, Where the dear Lord was crucified, Who died to save us all. 2 We may not know, we cannot tell What pains He had to bear; But we believe it was for us He hung and suffered there. 3 He died that we might be forgiven, He died to make us good; That we might go at last to heaven, Saved by His precious blood. 4 There was no other good enough To pay the price of sin; He only could unlock the gate Of heaven, and let us in. 5 O dearly, dearly has He loved, And we must love Him too, And trust in His redeeming blood, And try His works to do.

1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, The shadow of a mighty rock Within a weary land. O blessed shelter from the storm, The sinner’s sure retreat: O trysting-place, where heavenly love And heavenly justice meet. 2 There lies beyond its shadow Upon the farther side The darkness of an awful pit That opens deep and wide; But, lo, between there stands the cross Of Him who died to save With His own life-blood my lost soul From that eternal grave. 3 Upon the cross of Jesus Mine eye by faith can see The very dying form of one Who suffered there for me; And from my smitten heart with tears Two wonders I confess: The wonder of His glorious love, And my own worthlessness, 4 O Christ, beneath that shadow Be my abiding-place; I ask no other sunshine than The sunshine of Thy face: Content to let the world go by, And count its gain but loss, This sinful self my only shame, My only hope Thy cross.

Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on Matthew 18:1-6
I Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. Luke 23.34 1 Jesus, in Thy dying woes, Even while Thy life-blood flows, Craving pardon for Thy foes: Hear us, holy Jesus. 2 Saviour, for our pardon sue, When our sins Thy pangs renew, For we know not what we do: Hear us, holy Jesus. 3 O may we, who mercy need, Be like Thee in heart and deed, When with wrong our spirits bleed: Hear us, holy Jesus.
II Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Luke 23.43 1 Jesus, pitying the sighs Of the thief who near Thee dies, Promising him Paradise: Hear us, holy Jesus. 2 May we in our guilt and shame Still Thy love and mercy claim, Calling humbly on Thy name: Hear us, holy Jesus. 3 May our hearts to Thee incline, Looking from our cross to Thine Cheer our souls with hope divine: Hear us, holy Jesus.
III Woman, behold, your son! Behold, your mother John 19.26,27 1 Jesus, loving to the end Her whose heart Thy sorrows rend, And Thy dearest human friend: Hear us, holy Jesus. 2 May we in Thy sorrows share, For Thy sake all peril dare, And enjoy Thy tender care: Hear us, holy Jesus. 3 May we all Thy loved ones be, All one holy family, Loving for the love of Thee: Hear us, holy Jesus.
IV My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Matthew 27.46 1 Jesus, whelmed in fears unknown With our evil left alone, While no light from heaven is shown Hear us, holy Jesus. 2 When we seem in vain to pray And our hope seems far away, In the darkness be our stay: Hear us, holy Jesus. 3 Though no Father seem to hear, Though no light our spirits cheer, Tell our faith that God is near: Hear us, holy Jesus.
V I thirst. John 19.28 1 Jesus, in Thy thirst and pain, While Thy wounds Thy life-blood drain, Thirsting more our love to gain:, Hear us, holy Jesus. 2 Thirst for us in mercy still; All Thy holy work fulfil; Satisfy Thy loving will: Hear us, holy Jesus. 3 May we thirst Thy love to know; Lead us in our sin and woe Where the healing waters flow: Hear us, holy Jesus.
VI It is finished. John 19.30 1 Jesus, all our ransom paid, All Thy Father’s will obeyed, By Thy sufferings perfect made: Hear us, holy Jesus. 2 Save us in our soul’s distress: Be our help to cheer and bless, While we grow in holiness: Hear us, holy Jesus. 3 Brighten all our heavenward way With an ever holier ray, Till we pass to perfect day: Hear us, holy Jesus,
VII Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. Luke 23.46 1 Jesus -all Thy labour vast, All Thy woe and conflict past- Yielding up Thy soul at last: Hear us, holy Jesus. 2 When the death-shades round us lower, Guard us from the tempter’s power, Keep us in that trial hour: Hear us, holy Jesus. 3 May Thy life and death supply Grace to live and grace to die, Grace to reach the home on high: Hear us, holy Jesus.
On this episode Pastor Jake is joined by Pastor Daniel Finn of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Kallangur, QLD (ELS) to discuss the book of Matthew
1 O perfect life of love! All, all, is finished now; All that He left His throne above To do for us below. 2 No work is left undone Of all the Father willed; His toil, His sorrows, one by one, The Scripture have fulfilled. 3 No pain that we can share But He has felt its smart; All forms of human grief and care Have pierced that tender heart. 4 And on His thorn-crowned head, And on His sinless soul, Our sins in all their guilt were laid, That He might make us whole. 5 In perfect love He dies: For me He dies, for me; O all-atoning sacrifice, I cling by faith to Thee. 6 In every time of need, Before the judgement-throne, Thy work, O Lamb of God, I’ll plead, Thy merits, not my own. 7 Yet work, O Lord, in me As Thou for me hast wrought; And let my love the answer be To grace Thy love has brought.

1 Praise to the Holiest in the height, And in the depth be praise: In all His words most wonderful, Most sure in all His ways. 2 O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, A second Adam to the fight And to the rescue came. 3 O wisest love! that flesh and blood Which did in Adam fail, Should strive afresh against their foe, Should strive and should prevail; 4 And that a higher gift than grace Should flesh and blood refine: God’s presence and His very self, And essence all-divine. 5 O generous love! that He, who smote In Man for man the foe, The double agony in Man For man should undergo. 6 And in the garden secretly, And on the cross on high, Should teach His brethren, and inspire To suffer and to die. 7 Praise to the Holiest in the height, And in the depth be praise: In all His words most wonderful, Most sure in all His ways.
1 Lord Jesus, when we stand afar, And gaze upon Thy holy cross, In love of Thee and scorn of self, O may we count the world as loss. 2 When we behold Thy bleeding wounds, And the rough way that Thou hast trod, Make us to hate the load of sin That lay so heavy on our God. 3 O holy Lord, uplifted high, With outstretched arms, in mortal woe, Embracing in Thy wondrous love The sinful world that lies below: 4 Give us an ever-living faith, To gaze beyond the things we see; And in the mystery of Thy death Draw us and all men unto Thee.

1 Jesus, who for my transgression Didst the shameful cross endure, And didst there the blest possession Of Thy joys for me secure: May my praise be ever telling Of Thy love, all love excelling. 2 Wondrous woes that brought salvation! Wondrous grace to sinners shown! Heaven is wrapt in contemplation Of His love, whom men disown. O my soul, wilt thou disown Him? Wilt not thou, my heart, enthrone Him? 3 Who but He can bless thy weeping? Who but He can soothe thy grief? Only safe beneath His keeping, Thou in Him hast sure relief: To the cross He came to bless thee; Let His love, my soul, possess thee. 4 Lord, each thought and inclination, All my heart and will inspire, That my soul, Thy new creation, Thee may serve with pure desire; Daily Thy great love renewing, Daily thus my sins subduing.

1 One thing more than all my heart is craving As my food by night and day; Blest with this, all ills and trials braving, Through this wilderness I stray: Ever on the Man to gaze adoring, Who, with blood-sweat and with tears imploring, On His face submissive sank, And the Father’s chalice drank. 2 Ever shall mine eyes, His form retaining, View the Lamb once slain for me, As He yonder, pale and uncomplaining, Hangs upon the bitter tree; As He, thirsting, wrestled in His anguish, That in hell my soul might never languish, Of me thinking, when His cry, “It is finished!” rose on high. 3 O my Saviour, never shall Thy kindness Nor my guilt forgotten be: When I sat a stranger in my blindness, Thou didst still remember me; For Thy sheep Thou long hadst interceded Ere the shepherd’s gentle voice was heeded, And-a costly ransom price! – Bought me with Thy sacrifice. 4 I am Thine; say Thou, “Amen for ever!” Blessed Jesus, mine Thou art! Let Thy precious name escape me never; Stamp it burning on my heart. Here to live and die, in Thee believing, With Thee all things bearing and achieving: This my solemn promise be, Till in heaven Thy face I see.

Gathered here, O gracious Lord and Saviour, We would pledge our love to Thee; Trusting in Thy death, we will endeavour True and faithful e’er to be. As united here we sing Thy praises, Lord, accept the hymn Thy Church now raises, And affirm Thy love so true, Saying, “Peace I give to you.”
Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on James 5:7-11
1 We sing the praise of Him who died, Of Him who died upon the cross; The sinner’s hope let men deride, For this we count the world but loss. 2 Inscribed upon the cross we see, In shining letters, “God is love”; He bears our sins upon the tree; He brings us mercy from above. 3 The cross! it takes our guilt away; It holds the fainting spirit up; It cheers with hope the gloomy day, And sweetens every bitter cup. 4 It makes the coward spirit brave, And nerves the feeble arm for fight; It takes its terror from the grave, And gilds the bed of death with light. 5 The balm of life, the cure of woe, The measure and the pledge of love, The sinner’s refuge here below, The angels’ theme in heaven above.

1 Enslaved by sin, and bound in chains, Beneath its dreadful tyrant sway, And doomed to everlasting pains, We wretched, guilty captives lay. 2 Nor gold nor gems could buy our peace, Nor could the world’s collected store Suffice to purchase our release; A thousand worlds were all too poor. 3 Jesus, the Lord, the mighty God, An all-sufficient ransom paid; O matchless price! His precious blood For vile, rebellious traitors shed. 4 Jesus the sacrifice became To rescue guilty souls from hell; The spotless, bleeding, dying Lamb Beneath avenging justice fell. 5 Amazing goodness! Love divine! O may our grateful hearts adore The matchless grace; nor yield to sin, Nor wear its cruel fetters more.

1 Go to dark Gethsemane, Ye that feel the tempter’s power; Your Redeemer’s conflict see, Watch with Him one bitter hour: Turn not from His griefs away, Learn of Jesus Christ to pray. 2 Follow to the judgement-hall, View the Lord of life arraigned; O the wormwood and the gall! O the pangs His soul sustained! Shun not suffering, shame, or loss; Learn of Him to bear the cross. 3 Calvary’s mournful mountain climb; There, adoring at His feet, Mark that miracle of time, God’s own sacrifice complete: “It is finished”, hear the cry; Learn of Jesus Christ to die. 4 Early hasten to the tomb Where they laid His breathless clay; All is solitude and gloom; Who hath taken Him away? Christ is risen! He meets our eyes; Saviour, teach us so to rise.
1 Saviour, when in dust to Thee Low we bow the-adoring knee; When, repentant, to the skies Scarce we lift our weeping eyes: O by all Thy pains and woe Suffered once for man below, Bending from Thy throne on high, Hear our solemn litany. 2 By Thy helpless infant years, By Thy life of want and tears, By Thy days of sore distress In the savage wilderness, By the dread mysterious hour Of the-insulting tempter’s power: Turn, O turn, a favouring eye, Hear our solemn litany. 3 By Thine hour of dire despair, By Thine agony of prayer, By the cross, the nail, the thorn, Piercing spear, and torturing scorn; By the gloom that veiled the skies O’er the dreadful sacrifice: Listen to our humble cry, Hear our solemn litany. 4 By Thy deep expiring groan, By the sad sepulchral stone, By the vault, whose dark abode Held in vain the rising God: O from earth to heaven restored, Mighty, re-ascended Lord, Listen, listen to the cry Of our solemn litany.

1 Come to Calvary’s holy mountain, Sinners, ruined by the fall; Here a pure and healing fountain Flows to you, to me, to all, In a full perpetual tide, Opened when our Saviour died. 2 Come in poverty and meanness, Come defiled, without, within; From infection and uncleanness, From the leprosy of sin, Wash your robes and make them white; Ye shall walk with God in light. 3 Come in sorrow and contrition, Wounded, impotent, and blind; Here the guilty free remission, Here the troubled peace may find: Health this fountain will restore; He that drinks shall thirst no more. 4 He that drinks shall live for ever; ’Tis a soul-renewing flood: God is faithful; God will never Break His covenant of blood, Signed when our Redeemer died, Sealed when He was glorified.

1 Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, See Him dying on the tree; ’Tis the Christ, by man rejected, Yes, my soul, ‘tis He, ‘tis He. ’Tis the long expected prophet, David’s Son, yet David’s Lord; Proofs I see sufficient of it: ’Tis the true and faithful Word. 2 Tell me, ye who hear Him groaning, Was there ever grief like His? Friends through fear His cause disowning, Foes insulting His distress; Many hands were raised to wound Him, None would interpose to save; But the deepest stroke that pierced Him Was the stroke that Justice gave. 3 Ye who think of sin but lightly, Nor suppose the evil great, Here may view its nature rightly, Here its guilt may estimate. Mark the sacrifice appointed; See who bears the awful load; ’Tis the Word, the Lord’s anointed, Son of man and Son of God. 4 Here we have a firm foundation, Here the refuge of the lost; Christ’s the rock of our salvation, His the name of which we boast. Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, Sacrifice to cancel guilt! None shall ever be confounded Who on Him their hope have built.
Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on Isaiah 11:1-10
1 Glory be to Jesus Who in bitter pains Poured for me the lifeblood From His sacred veins. 2 Grace and life eternal In that blood I find; Blest be His compassion, Infinitely kind! 3 Blest through endless ages Be the precious stream Which from endless torments Did the world redeem! 4 Abel’s blood for vengeance Pleaded to the skies; But the blood of Jesus For our pardon cries. 5 Oft as earth exulting Wafts its praise on high, Angel hosts rejoicing Make their glad reply. 6 Lift we then our voices, Swell the mighty flood; Louder still, and louder, Praise the precious blood!

1 There is a fountain filled with blood Drawn from Immanuel’s veins, And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, Lose all their guilty stains. 2 The dying thief rejoiced to see That fountain in his day; And there have I, as vile as he, Washed all my sins away. 3 Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood Shall never lose its power, Till all the ransomed Church of God Be saved to sin no more. 4 E’er since by faith I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, And shall be till I die. 5 Then in a nobler, sweeter song I’ll sing Thy power to save, When this poor lisping, stamm6ring tongue Lies silent in the grave.
Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on John 18:33-37
1 And can it be, that I should gain An interest in the Saviour’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain – For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2 ’Tis mystery all! The-Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the first-born seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. 3 He left His Father’s throne above – So free, so infinite His grace- Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me! 4 No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine! Alive in Him, my living head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach the-eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

1 Go, my soul, to Calvary, Stand before the cross in wonder; See how Jesus died for thee, Mark it well, and humbly ponder; Should thy sins not grieve thee now Cold and hard as stone art thou. 2 O that man of sorrows see, Hanging there twixt earth and heaven, Nailed to that accurs6d tree, Heart and soul by torments riven. Bleeding, tortured, crucified, See thy Lord: for thee He died. 3 Holy, spotless Lamb of God, ‘Twas my sin and my transgression Brought Thee here to shed Thy blood, And to bear this cruel passion. To redeem my bitter loss Thou must die upon the cross. 4 Lamb of God, look down, behold, For Thy love I here adore Thee; In Thy wounds my heart enfold, As in tears I stand before Thee. As I watch Thy pains and woes Full of grief, my heart o’erflows. 5 Never, nevermore can I Recompense what Thou didst suffer; Though I serve Thee till I die, Though a thousand worlds I offer, Naught that I can do or say Can Thy least of pains repay. 6 One thing only can I do: All my love, Lord, here I tender; At Thy cross, my faith to show, Heart and life to Thee surrender. Take and make this heart of mine Always, only, wholly Thine.

1 Lord Jesus, we give thanks to Thee That Thou didst die to set us free; Made righteous through Thy precious blood, We now are reconciled to God. 2 By virtue of Thy wounds, we pray, True God and man, be Thou our stay, Our comfort when we yield our breath, Our rescue from eternal death. 3 Defend us, Lord, from sin and shame; Help us by Thine almighty name To bear our crosses patiently, Consoled by Thy great agony. 4 And thus the full assurance gain That Thou wilt e’er our friend remain, And not forsake us in our strife Until we enter into life.

Here at Thy cross I hail Thee now, O Lamb of God, to Thee my vow And reverent homage paying. Here all would seem but pain and loss, As Thou must die on Thy dread cross, Thy Father’s will obeying. Yet in Thy tortured form I see God’s glory and His majesty, And my redemption’s story; Thee I acclaim as King and Lord, As worthy here to be adored As on Thy throne of glory. 2 To Thee, O Lord, I yield my heart, Naught from Thy love my soul can part, Thou prince of my salvation. An open way before me lies To Thee, and Thine own Paradise, The way Thy cross did fashion. Thy love and death to me assure The strength to dare and to endure, The faith to fail Thee never; I trust in Thee in life and death, He who is Thine and holds this faith Is saved, to live for ever.

Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on Matthew 25:14-30
1 O darkest woe! Ye tears, forth flow! Hath earth so sad a wonder? God the Father’s only Son Lieth buried yonder. 2 O sorrow dread; God’s Son is dead! But by His expiation Of our guilt upon the cross Gained for us salvation. 3 O sinful man It was the ban Of death on thee that brought Him Down to suffer for thy sins, And such woe hath wrought Him. 4 Behold thy Lord, The Lamb of God, Blood-sprinkled lies before thee, He has given His life that He May to life restore thee. 5 O happy he Whose heart doth see And rightly comprehendeth Why the Lord of glory thus To the grave descendeth. 6 O Jesus blest, My help and rest, I humbly pray, Lord, hear me: Make me love Thee to the last, And in death be near me.
1 My song is love unknown, My Saviour’s love to me, Love to the loveless shown, That they might lovely be. O who am I, That for my sake My Lord should take Frail flesh, and die? 2 He came from His blest throne, Salvation to bestow; But men made strange, and none The longed-for Christ would know. But O, my friend, My friend indeed, Who at my need His life did spend! 3 Sometimes they strew His way, And His sweet praises sing; Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” Is all their breath, And for His death They thirst and cry. 4 They rise, and needs will have My dear Lord made away; A murderer they save, The prince of life they slay. Yet cheerful He To suffering goes, That He His foes From thence might free. 5 Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine; Never was love, dear King Never was grief like Thine! This is my Friend, In whose sweet praise I all my days Could gladly spend.

Baptismal Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on Colossians 2:10-14
1 Alas! And did my Saviour bleed, And did my sovereign die? Would He devote that sacred head For such a worm as I? 2 Was it for crimes that I had done He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity, grace unknown, And love beyond degree! 3 Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in, When God, the mighty Maker, died For man, the creature’s sin. 4 Thus might I hide my blushing face While His dear cross appears, Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And melt mine eyes to tears. 5 But drops of grief can ne’er repay The debt of love I owe: Here, Lord, I give myself away; ’Tis all that I can do.
1 Christ, the life of all the living, Christ the death of death, my foe, Who, Thyself for me once giving Into darkest depths of woe, By Thy death my ransom buying, Hast delivered me from dying: Praise and thanks shall ever be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 2 Thou, O Christ, hast taken on Thee Scourges of the tongue and rod; Pain and scorn were heaped upon Thee, O Thou sinless Son of God. Thus didst Thou my soul deliver From the bonds of sin for ever: Praise and thanks shall ever be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 3 Heartless scoffers did surround Thee, Treating Thee with cruel scorn; With the piercing thorns they crowned Thee; All disgrace, Lord, hast Thou borne, That as Thine Thou mightest own me, And with heavenly glory crown me: Praise and thanks shall ever be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 4 Thou didst let Thyself be beaten To deliver me from pain; Falsely charged, and sorely smitten, That Thy loss might be my gain; Thou didst suffer crucifixion For my comfort in affliction: Praise and thanks shall ever be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 5 Jesus, from my heart I thank Thee, For the vast, stupendous load, Which Thou borest to release me From the dreadful wrath of God; For Thy cruel death and passion, Agony and sore temptation, For Thy anguish and Thy pain, Thanks for ever, Lord. Amen.

1 Jesus, I will ponder now On Thy holy passion; With Thy Spirit me endow For such meditation. Grant that I in love and faith May the image cherish Of Thy suffering, pain, and death That I may not perish. 2 Make me see Thy great distress, Anguish, and affliction, Bonds, and stripes, and wretchedness, And Thy crucifixion; Make me see how scourge and rod, Spear and nails, did wound Thee, How Thou diedst for man, O God, Who with thorns had crowned Thee. 3 Show me not alone Thy pain, Torment, and affliction; Let me see the cause and gain Of Thy crucifixion. Ah, my sin caused all the woe That Thou, Lord, hast suffered, Pard6ning grace dost Thou bestow, Gained when Thou wast offered. 4 Grant that I Thy passion view With repentant grieving, Nor Thee crucify anew By unholy living. How could I refuse to shun Every sinful pleasure, Since for me God’s only Son Suffered without measure. 5 If my sins give me alarm And my conscience grieve me, Let Thy cross my fear disarm, Peace of conscience give me. Grant that I may trust in Thee And Thy holy passion; If His Son so loveth me, God must have compassion. 6 Grant that I may willingly Bear with Thee my crosses, Learning humbleness of Thee, Peace mid pain and losses. May I give Thee love for love; Hear me, O my Saviour, That I may in heaven above Sing Thy praise for ever.
Sermon by Rev. Jake Zabel of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dalby, Queensland, Australia on Matthew 6:25-27
On this episode Jake is joined by Deacon Alan McIntyre of Redeemer Christian Fellowship in Melbourne to discuss his journey to Lutheranism
Part I 1 O world, see thy Life languish Upon the tree in anguish; Thy Lord and Saviour dies. The prince of power with meekness Submits in mortal weakness To blows, and jeers, and railing cries. 2 My Saviour, who hath wrought Thee Such pain, and who hath brought Thee Such sad and dire disgrace? By sin Thou art not tainted, Nor is Thy soul acquainted With evil like our fallen race. 3 I caused Thy grief and trembling With sins in sum resembling The sand-grains by the sea; They sore Thy soul have cumbered, And raised those woes unnumbered Which press in dark array on Thee. 4 The pangs that rend Thy spirit, I, for my deep demerit, Should suffer in Thy stead; The fetters and the scourging, The tide of sorrow surging Round Thee, should break upon my head. 5 Thyself, Lord, Thou dost offer, And in my stead dost suffer The bitter cross for me; The crown of thorns Thou wearest, The shame and scorn Thou bearest For guilt of mine thus patiently. 6 Each hour of life is showing How all my good is owing To this great love of Thine. Each hour I would endeavour My soul and body ever To Thy blest service to resign. Part II 7 Lord, little can I offer For all that Thou didst suffer; This one thing will I do: Till death my soul releases, Thy dying, Thy distresses, My heart will cherish deep and true. 8 Thy cross will stand before me, Its sacred power be o’er me, Wherever I may be: A mirror whose reflection Shows me all pure perfection- A seal of love and constancy. 9 My flesh now crucifying, Its evil lust denying, I unto sin will die. Lord, I will never leave Thee, But shun whate’er may grieve Thee, Strong in the strength Thou dost supply. 10 Thy sighing and Thy groaning, The tears and blood atoning, Which Thou hast freely poured, Through life will comfort lend me, And after death attend me Into Thy endless rest, O Lord.

Part I 1 A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth The guilt of all men bearing; ‘Tis laden with the sins of earth, None else the burden sharing. It goes its way, grows weak and faint, To slaughter led without complaint, Its spotless life to offer; Bears shame, and stripes, and wounds, and death, Anguish, and mockery, and saith: All this I gladly suffer. 2 This Lamb is Christ, the soul’s great friend, The Lamb of God, our Saviour; Him God the Father chose to send, To gain for us His favour. He bids His Son go forth to share The lot of children doomed to bear His wrath and condemnation; Though great the punishment, and dread, God wills that He His blood shall shed To purchase man’s salvation. 3 Behold, the Lamb most willingly Endures what God commanded, His will conforms to God’s decree, To do as God demanded. O wondrous love, what hast Thou done! The Father offers up His Son, The Son content descendeth; O love, O love, how strong art Thou! In shroud and grave He lieth now Whose word the mountains rendeth. 4 Lord, all my life I’ll cleave to Thee, Thy love for e’er beholding, Thee ever, as Thou ever me, With loving arms enfolding. And when my heart grows cold in death, Thy love I’ll praise with my last breath, Thine image still before me. Henceforth myself and all that’s mine I yield to Thee, my Lord, as Thine, Who art my hope and glory. Part II 5 From morn till eve my song shall be, O Lord, Thy wondrous favour; To sacrifice myself to Thee Shall be my one endeavour. My stream of life shall flow for Thee, A constant current, ceaselessly Its praise to Thee outpouring; And all that Thou hast done for me I’ll treasure in my memory, Thine endless love adoring. 6 When I at last Thy kingdom see, And taste its joy and pleasure, Thy blood my royal robe shall be, My glory and my treasure. Before the heavenly Father’s throne This then shall be the shining crown With which Thou wilt provide me; And there, by Him to Thee betrothed, Shall I in wedding garments clothed Stand as Thine own beside Thee.

Part I 1 O Lord, when condemnation And guilt oppress my soul, Then let Thy bitter passion My doubts and fears control; Thou on the cross hast died for me, And in Thy love hast taken My sin and guilt on Thee. 2 O wonder passing measure To faith’s enlightened eye! For slaves it was the pleasure Of their own Lord to die. The mighty God stoops from on high For me, lost, ruined creature, And deigns as man to die. 3 My sins rise up to heaven And countless is their host; But Christ His life has given, And paid redemption’s cost. Since then on Him my sins were laid Of hell and all its torments I am no more afraid. 4 Henceforth my heart shall bless Thee While here I live and move, With songs of praise address Thee For all Thy dying love. Thy suff6rings and great agony Shall be my meditation Till I am called to Thee. Part II 5 Lord, let Thy bitter passion My soul with strength inspire To flee with indignation All sinful, base desire. O let me never, Lord, forget The greatness of that ransom Which paid my endless debt. 6 Should earthly griefs assail me, And were it shame and scorn, Let patience never fail me, To bear as Thou hast borne. Grant that the world I may forsake And Thee, my Lord and master, As my example take. 7 Let me now do to others As Thou hast done for me, And love all men as brothers, Their willing servant be. O may I never seek my own But help as Thou hast helped me With purest love alone. 8 At length, when I am bidden With all things here to part, The wounds in which I’m hidden Speak peace into my heart; And since my trust is in Thy blood, O give me full assurance That I shall see my God.

PART I 1 O dearest Jesus, what law hast Thou broken, That such sharp sentence should on Thee be spoken? Of what offences must Thou make confession, Of what transgression? 2 With thorns they crown Thee; yea, they smite, they scourge Thee, With cruel mockings to the cross they urge Thee; Gall do they give Thee, harshly they decry Thee, They crucify Thee. 3 Whence come these sorrows, whence this mortal anguish? For my transgression, Thou, O Lord, must languish. All Thou dost suffer, all Thou dost inherit, This do I merit. 4 God’s Son, the righteous, here must die in sadness: Man, the transgressor, now may live in gladness. Man’s life was forfeit, yet he is acquitted – God is committed. 5 O love so mighty, wondrous love unbounded, Thai brought Thee hither, thus by foes surrounded! I sought the pleasures, which the world doth offer; Thou, Lord, must suffer. PART II 6 O King most mighty, Lord of endless glory, How shall I publish Thy most wondrous story? No gifts are worthy; naught have I to proffer. What dare I offer? 7 Yet unrequited, Lord, I would not leave Thee; Shunning all evil that would wound and grieve Thee, I will most humbly and with prayers most lowly Quench fires unholy. 8 My own endeavour nevermore suffices That I may vanquish lust that still entices; Grant me Thy Spirit, who to good shall win me; Reign Thou within me. 9 Lord, I will ponder on Thy grace unceasing, Earth’s empty treasures shall no more be pleasing; To do Thy bidding shall be my endeavour Now and for ever. 10 And when, Lord Jesus, at Thy throne in heaven The crown of glory shall to me be given, Where all the ransomed sweetest hymns will raise Thee, I, too, shall praise Thee.

1 When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride. 2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God. All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. 3 See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4 Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small! Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

1 Jesus, refuge of the weary, Blest Redeemer, whom we love, Fountain in life’s desert dreary, Saviour from the world above: O how oft Thine eyes, offended, Gaze upon the sinner’s fall! Yet, upon the cross extended, Thou didst bear the pain of all. 2 Do we pass that cross unheeding, Breathing no repentant vow, Though we see Thee wounded, bleeding, See Thy thorn-encircled brow? Yet Thy sinless death hath brought us Life eternal, peace, and rest; Only what Thy grace hath taught us Calms the sinner’s stormy breast. 3 Jesus, may our hearts be burning With more fervent love for Thee; May our eyes be ever turning To Thy cross of agony., Till in glory, parted never From the blessed Saviour’s side, Graven in our hearts for ever Dwell the cross, the crucified.

1 O sacred head, now wounded, With pain and scorn weighed down, In mockery surrounded, With thorns Thine only crown: O sacred head, what glory, What bliss, till now, was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine. 2 Men spit upon and jeer Thee, Thou noble countenance, Though mighty worlds shall fear Thee And flee before Thy glance. How art Thou pale with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn; How doth Thy visage languish Which once was bright as morn. 3 Now from Thy cheeks hath vanished Their colour once so fair, From Thy red lips is banished The splendour that was there. Pale death with cruel rigour Bereaveth Thee of life; Thus losest Thou Thy vigour And strength in this sad strife. 4 What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered Was all for sinners’ gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Saviour, ’Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favour, Vouchsafe to me Thy grace. 5 In this Thy bitter passion, Good shepherd, think of me. With Thy most sweet compassion, Unworthy though I be; Beneath Thy cross abiding, For ever would I rest, In Thy dear love confiding And with Thy presence blest. 6 Thanks from my heart I offer, O Jesus, dearest friend, For all that Thou didst suffer, Thy pity without end. O grant that I may ever To Thy truth faithful be; When soul and body sever May I be found in Thee. 7 Lord, when I am departing, O part not Thou from me; When pangs of death are darting, Come, Lord, and set me free; And when my heart must languish Amidst the final throe, Release me from mine anguish By Thine own pain and woe. 8 Be Thou my consolation, My shield, when I must die; Remind me of Thy passion When my last hour draws nigh. Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, Upon Thy cross shall dwell, My heart by faith enfold Thee; Who dieth thus, dies well.

1 Let Thy blood in mercy poured, Let Thy gracious body broken, Be to me, O gracious Lord, Of Thy boundless love the token: Thou didst give Thyself for me, Now I give myself to Thee. 2 Thou didst die that I might live; Blessed Lord, Thou cam’st to save me; All that love of God could give He for Thy sake freely gave me: Thou didst give Thyself for me, Now I give myself to Thee. 3 By the thorns that crowned Thy brow, By the spear-wound and the nailing, By Thy pain and death, I now - Claim, O Christ, Thy love unfailing: Thou didst give Thyself for me, Now I give myself to Thee. 4 Wilt Thou own the gift I bring? 1 Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle, Sing the ending of the fray; Now above the cross, the trophy, Sound the loud triumphant lay: Tell how Christ, the world’s Redeemer, As a victim won the day. 2 Tell how, when at length the fullness Of the-appointed time was come, He, the Word, was born of woman, Left for us His Father’s home, Showed to men the perfect manhood, Shone as light amidst the gloom. 3 Thus, with thirty years accomplished, Went He forth from Nazareth, Destined, dedicate, and willing, Wrought His work, and met His death; Like a lamb He humbly yielded On the cross His dying breath. 4 Faithful cross, thou sign of triumph, Now for man the noblest tree, None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit thy peer may be; Symbol of the world’s redemption, For the weight that hung on thee! 5 Unto God be praise and glory: To the Father and the Son, To the-eternal Spirit, honour Now and evermore be done; Praise and glory in the highest, While the timeless ages run.

1 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to Thee we raise, Manifested by the star To the sages from afar; Branch of royal David’s stem In Thy birth at Bethlehem: Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 2 Manifest at Jordan’s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; And at Cana, wedding guest In Thy Godhead manifest; Manifest in power divine, Changing water into wine: Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 3 Manifest in making whole Palsied limbs and fainting soul; Manifest in valiant fight, Quelling all the devil’s might; Manifest in gracious will, Ever bringing good from ill: Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 4 Sun and moon shall darkened be, Stars shall fall, the heavens shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, All will see His glorious sign, All will then the trumpet hear, All will see the judge appear: Thou by all wilt be confessed, God in man made manifest. 5 Grant us grace to see Thee, Lord, Mirrored in Thy holy Word; May we imitate Thee now, And be pure, as pure art Thou; That we like to Thee may be At Thy great epiphany, And may praise Thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest.

1 Angels, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o’er all the earth; Ye who sang creation’s story, Now proclaim Messiah’s birth: Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King. 2 Shepherds, in the field abiding, Watching o’er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the infant light: Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King.
3 Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great desire of nations; Ye have seen His natal star: Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King.
4 Saints, before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear: Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the new-born King.

1 Hail, Thou source of every blessing, Sovereign Father of mankind! Gentiles now, Thy grace possessing, In Thy courts admission find. Grateful now we fall before Thee, In Thy Church obtain a place; Now by faith behold Thy glory, Praise Thy truth, adore Thy grace. 2 Once far off, but now invited, We approach Thy sacred throne; In Thy covenant united, Reconciled, redeemed, made one. Now revealed to eastern sages, See the star of mercy shine, Mystery hid in former ages, Mystery great of love divine. 3 Hail, Thou all-inviting Saviour! Gentiles now their offerings bring, In Thy temple seek Thy favour, Jesus Christ, our Lord and King. May we, body, soul, and spirit, Live devoted to Thy praise, Glorious realms of bliss inherit, Grateful anthems ever raise.

1 Thou Light of Gentile nations, Thy people’s joy and love, Drawn hither by Thy Spirit, We would Thy presence prove. We seek Thee in Thy temple, And wait with earnest mind, As faithful Simeon waited His Saviour God to find. 2 Thy servants still may meet Thee, O Lord, in every place Where Thy true Word hath promised That they should see Thy face. Today Thou still dost grant us, Who gather round Thee here, In arms of faith to bear Thee, As did that aged seer. 3 Let us, O Lord, be faithful Like Simeon to the end, That from our hearts exultant His joyful prayer ascend: O Lord, now let Thy servant Depart in peace, I pray, Since I have seen my Saviour, And here beheld His day. 4 My Saviour, I behold Thee With faith’s enlightened eye; Of Thee no foe can rob me, His threats I can defy. Within Thy heart abiding, As Thou dost dwell in me, No pain, no death, has terrors To part my soul from Thee.

1 Gentiles, rise to greet the morning; Rise, O Salem, rise and shine! See the day of joy now dawning Over thee with light divine. God remembers in His kindness Those who long have walked in blindness. 2 Ere this Sun our earth had brightened, O how blindly did we stray. Yea, our minds were unenlightened, We sought not the heavenly way; Vain was all we were pursuing, All our thinking, all our doing. 3 Now hath risen with beams unclouded Christ, the day-spring from on high; All the gloom that earth enshrouded Must before His brightness fly. Many cares and woes are vanished Now that darkness hath been banished. 4 Jesus, Thy appearing filleth All my thoughts in sorrow’s hour; Thy appearing surely stilleth All my dread of death’s dark power. Lord, in Thee all joys are brightened And all pains and burdens lightened. 5 Let me leave this world of sadness Filled with joy, when life is o’er, That I see Thy light and gladness, Which Thou hast for me in store Where Thy saints, o’er death, victorious, Wear the crown of light so glorious.

1 Earth has many a noble city; Bethlem, thou dost all excel: Out of thee the Lord from heaven Came to rule His Israel. 2 Fairer than the sun at morning Was the star that told His birth, To the world its God announcing Seen in fleshly form on earth. 3 Eastern sages at His cradle Make oblations rich and rare; See them give in deep devotion Gold and frankincense and myrrh. 4 Sacred gifts of mystic meaning: Incense doth their God disclose, Gold the King of kings proclaimeth, Myrrh His sepulchre foreshows. 5 Jesus, whom the Gentiles worshipped At Thy glad epiphany, Unto Thee with God the Father And the Spirit glory be.

1 O Jesus, King of glory, Both David’s Lord and Son, Thy realm endures for ever, In heaven is fixed Thy throne. Throughout all earth’s dominions Make known from pole to pole Thy kingdom of salvation To each benighted soul. 2 Thou art a mighty monarch, As in Thy Word is told, Yet little Thou regardest All earthly goods or gold: On no proud steed Thou ridest, For Thee no jewelled crown, Thy home no lordly castle, For Thee but scorn and frown. 3 Yet art Thou decked with beauty, With rays of glorious light; Thy works proclaim Thy goodness, And all Thy ways are right. Vouchsafe to shield Thy people With Thine almighty arm, That they may dwell in safety From those who mean them harm. 4 Ah, look on me with pity Though I am weak and poor, Admit me to Thy kingdom To dwell there, blest and sure. I pray Thee, guide and keep me Safe from my bitter foes, From sin and death and Satan; Free me from all my woes. 5 O bid Thy Word within me Shine as the fairest star; Keep sin and all false doctrine For ever from me far; Help me confess Thee truly, And with Thy Christendom Here own Thee King and Saviour, And in the world to come.
1 As with gladness men of old Did the guiding star behold, As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright; So, most gracious Lord, may we Evermore be led to Thee. 2 As with joyful steps they sped, Saviour, to Thy lowly bed, There to bend the knee before Thee, whom heaven and earth adore; So may be with willing feet Ever seek Thy mercy-seat. 3 As they offered gifts most rare At Thy cradle rude and bare, So may we with holy joy, Pure and free from sin’s alloy, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to Thee, our heavenly King. 4 Holy Jesus, every day Keep us in the narrow way; And when earthly things are past, Bring our ransomed souls at last Where they need no star to guide, Where no clouds Thy glory hide. 5 In the heavenly country bright Need they no created light; Thou its light, its joy, its crown, Thou its sun which goes not down; There for ever may we sing Alleluias to our King.

1 O Christ, Thou Lord eternal, The Father’s only Son, Of whom the Word declareth That Thou with Him art one; Thou art the bright and morning star, Beyond all other radiance Thy glory streams afar. 2 For us Thou art incarnate, Born in these latter days, That we may never perish, Lost in our evil ways. Yea, death must own Thee as its Lord; And heaven by Thee is opened, And life once more restored. 3 O let us in Thy knowledge And in Thy love increase, That we in faith be steadfast, In service never cease. O grant our hearts Thy grace, that we May taste Thy precious sweetness, And thirst alone for Thee. 4 Creator Thou of all things, L Lord, divine in might, In heaven and earth Thou reignest Of Thine own power and might. So rule our hearts and minds that we Be wholly Thine, and never May turn aside from Thee. 5 Subdue us by Thy goodness, Thy grace and Spirit give, So that the old may perish, The new come forth and love; And grant us here on earth to be With heart and mind and longing Inclined, O Lord, to Thee.

Now I know He is my life, My help in need and dying. 3 Thou hast revealed in grace to all Him, our salvation; And to His kingdom Thou dost call Every nation, By Thy precious, saving Word, In all the world resounding. 4 The blessed light and hope is He Of lands benighted; By Him are those who know not Thee Fed and lighted. Israel’s bliss and praise is He, Their joy, reward, and glory.

1 O wondrous type, O vision fair Of glory that the Church shall share, Which Christ upon the mountain shows, Where brighter than the sun He glows! 2 The law and prophets there have place, The chosen witnesses of grace, And from the cloud the Holy One Bears record to the only Son. 3 With shining face and bright array, Christ deigns to manifest today What glory shall be theirs above Who joy in God with perfect love. 4 And faithful hearts are raised on high By this great vision’s mystery, For which in thankful strains we raise On this glad day the voice of praise.
1 Jesus, name of wondrous love, Name all other names above, Unto which must every knee Bow in deep humility. 2 Jesus, name decreed of old: To the maiden-mother told, Kneeling in her lowly cell, By the angel Gabriel. 3 Jesus, name of priceless worth To the fallen sons of earth, For the promise that it gave: Jesus shall His people save. 4 Jesus, name of mercy mild, Given to the holy child, When the cup of human woe First He tasted here below. 5 Jesus, only name that’s given Under all the mighty heaven, Whereby man, to sin enslaved, Burst his fetters and is saved. 6 Jesus, name of wondrous love, Human name of God above; Pleading only this, we flee, Helpless, O our God, to Thee.

1 To the name of our salvation Laud and honour let us pay, Which for many a generation Hid in God’s foreknowledge lay, But with holy exultation We may sing aloud today. 2 Jesus is the name we treasure, Name beyond what words can tell; Name of gladness, name of pleasure, Ear and heart delighting well; Name of sweetness passing measure, Saving us from sin and hell. 3 ‘Tis the name for adoration, Name for songs of victory, Name for holy meditation In this vale of misery, Name for joyful veneration By the citizens on high. 4 ‘Tis the name that whoso preacheth Speaks like music to the ear; Who in prayer this name beseecheth Sweetest comfort findeth near; Who its perfect wisdom reacheth Heavenly joy possesseth here. 5 Jesus is the name exalted Over every other name; In this name, whene’er assaulted, We can put our foes to shame; Strength to them who else had halted, Eyes to blind, and feet to lame. 6 Therefore we, in love adoring, This most blessed name revere, Holy Jesus, Thee imploring So to write it in us here, That hereafter, heavenward soaring, We may sing with angels there.

1 Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. Joyful, all you nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim: Christ is born in Bethlehem: Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the new-born King. 2 Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail, the incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus our Immanuel: Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the new-born King. 3 Hail, the heaven-born Prince of peace! Hail, the Sun of righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that we no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth: Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the new-born King.
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!
1 O rejoice, ye Christians, loudly, For our joy has now begun, Wondrous things our God has done. Tell abroad His goodness proudly, Who our race has honoured thus: Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness! Christ has done away with sadness. Hence, all sorrow and repining, For the son of grace is shining. 2 See, my soul, thy Saviour chooses Weakness here and poverty — In such love He comes to thee — Nor the manger hard refuses; All He suffers for thy good, To redeem thee by His blood: Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness! Christ has done away with sadness. Hence, all sorrow and repining, For the son of grace is shining. 3 Lord, how shall I think Thee rightly? I acknowledge that by Thee I am saved eternally. Let me not forget it lightly, But to Thee at all times cleave, And my heart true peace receive: Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness! Christ has done away with sadness. Hence, all sorrow and repining, For the son of grace is shining. 4 Jesus, guard and guide Thy members, Fill Thy brethren with Thy grace, Hear their prayers in every place. Quicken now life’s faintest embers; Grant all Christians, far and near, Holy peace, a glad new year: Joy, O joy, beyond all gladness! Christ has done away with sadness. Hence, all sorrow and repining, For the son of grace is shining.

1 Arise, my soul, sing joyfully, And praise thy great Creator, Who now hath sent this child to thee, His Son, thy Mediator. This is the day thy Saviour came To take man’s nature and his name, And by His incarnation To win for man salvation. 2 Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, And usher in the morning; Ye shepherds, shrink not with affright: The day of grace is dawning. This child, though weak in infancy, Our confidence and joy shall be, The power of Satan breaking, Our peace with God now making. 3 O dearest child, whom I adore, Whose grace surpasses measure, My brother, whom I cherish more Than earth with all its treasure: Haste from Thy manger to depart, O come and dwell within my heart; With joy will I receive Thee, A cradle there will give Thee. 4 All blessing, thanks, and praise to Thee, Lord Jesus Christ, be given: Thou hast my brother deigned to be, Thou Lord of earth and heaven. Help me throughout this day of grace To praise Thy love and seek Thy face; And when I stand before Thee For ever to adore Thee.

1 The people that in darkness sat A glorious light have seen; The light has shone on them who long In shades of death have been. 2 To hail Thee, Sun of righteousness, The gathering nations come; They joy as when the reapers bear Their harvest treasures home. 3 For Thou their burden doest remove, And break the tyrant’s rod, As in the day when Midian fell Before the sword of God. 4 To us a child of hope is born, To us a son is given, And on His shoulder ever rests All power in earth and heaven. 5 His name shall be the Prince of peace, The Everlasting Lord, The Wonderful, the Counsellor, The God by all adored. 6 His righteous government and power Shall over all extend; On judgment and on justice based, His reign shall have no end. 7 Lord Jesus, reign in us, we pray, And make us Thine alone, Who with the Father ever art And Holy Spirit one.

1 Immanuel, we sing Thy praise, Thou prince of life and fount of grace, Thou flower of heaven, and star of morn, Thou Lord of lords, Thou virgin-born. Hallelujah! 2 For Thee, since first the world was made, So many hearts have watched and prayed: The patriarchs’ and prophets’ throng For Thee have hoped and waited long. Hallelujah! 3 Now Thou art here, Thou ever-blest. In lowly manger dost Thou rest; An infant, yet supremely great: Poor, lowly, yet of high estate. Hallelujah! 4 From Thee above all gladness flows, Yet Thou must bear such bitter woes; The gentiles’ light and hope Thou art, Yet findest none to soothe Thine heart. Hallelujah! 5 But I, Thy humblest servant, here Declare my love with heart sincere: I love Thee truly, but I would That I might love Thee as I should. Hallelujah! 6 Thou art my head, my Lord, divine, I am Thy member, wholly Thine, And in Thy Spirit’s strength I still Would serve according to Thy will. Hallelujah! 7 Thus will I sing Thy praises here With joyful spirit year by year, And they shall sound for evermore When I in heaven Thy name adore. Hallelujah!

1 Beside Thy manger here I stand, Lord Jesus, life from heaven; With grateful heart and willing hand I give what Thou hast given. O take my spirit and my soul, My heart, my mind, O take it all; Be pleased, Lord, to receive it. 2 I lay in death’s dark, gloomy night, Thou camest, Lord, to save me; Thou art the sun, whose heavenly light Life and salvation gave me. O sun, who kindled faith to shine Within this darkened heart of mine, How radiant is Thy glory! 3 With joy I gaze upon Thy face To see Thee in Thy splendour; ’Tis greater than my soul can praise And song can fitly render. O that my mind might truly be As boundless as infinity, That it might comprehend Thee. 4 One thing, O Lord, I humbly pray, Deny me not this favour, That in my heart Thou day by day Wouldst dwell as mine for ever. O let me then Thy manger be; Come, Saviour, come, abide with me, Give me Thy choicest blessings. BLESS OUR GOING OUT, O LORD 509 Bless our going out, O Lord, Bless our entrance in like measures; Daily bread to us afford; Bless us in our toil and leisure. 1 Praise God the Lord, ye sons of men, Before His highest throne; Today He opens heaven again And gives us His own Son. 2 He leaves His heavenly Father’s throne, Is born an infant small, And in a manger, poor and lone, Lies in a humble stall. 3 His power to use He now refrains, No crown adorns His brow; He who as King for ever reigns Comes as a Servant now. 4 He is the branch of David’s line, King David’s Lord and Son, Through whom and by whose grace divine The kingdom must be won. 5 A wondrous change which He doth make: He takes our flesh and blood, And He conceals for sinners’ sake His majesty as God. 6 He serves that I a lord may be – A great exchange indeed! Could Jesus’ love do more for me To help me in my need? 7 He opens us again the door Of Paradise today; The angel guards the gate no more: To God our thanks we pay.

1 To shepherds as they watched by night Appeared a host of angels bright; Behold the tender babe, they said, In yonder lowly manger laid. 2 He lies in Bethlem, David’s town, As Micah did of old make known; ’Tis Jesus Christ, your Lord and King, Who doth to all salvation bring. 3 Rejoice ye, then, that through His Son God is with sinners now at one; Made like yourselves of flesh and blood, Your brother is the eternal God. 4 What harm can sin and death then do? The true God now abides with you. Let hell and Satan rage and chafe, Christ is your brother: you are safe. 5 Not one He will or can forsake Who Him his confidence doth make. Though all their wiles your foes may try, You can their utmost powers defy. 6 You shall, you must, at last prevail; God’s own you are, and cannot fail. To God for ever sing your praise With joy and patience all your days.

1 All my heart this night rejoices As I hear Far and near, Sweetest angel voices. “Christ is born”, their choirs are singing, Till the air Everywhere Now with joy is ringing. 2 Forth today the conqueror goeth: Who the foe, Sin and woe, Death and hell, o’erthroweth. God is man, man to deliver; God’s own Son Now is one With our blood for ever. 3 He becomes the Lamb that taketh Sin away And for aye Full atonement maketh. For our life His life He tenders, And our race By His grace Meet for glory renders. 4 Hark! A voice from yonder manger, Soft and sweet, Doth entreat: Flee from woe and danger. Brethren, from all ills that grieve you You are freed; All you need I will surely give you. 5 Come then, let us hasten yonder; Here let all, Great and small, Kneel in awe and wonder. Love Him, who with love is yearning; Hail the star That from far Bright with hope is burning. 6 Dearest Lord, Thee will I cherish, Live to Thee, Die to Thee; Thus I shall not perish, But in life that endeth never, Joyfully, Peacefully, Dwell with Thee for ever.

1 “From heaven above to earth I come To bear good news to every home; Glad tidings of great joy I bring Whereof I now will say and sing: 2 “To you this night is born a child Of Mary, chosen virgin mild This little child, of lowly birth, Shall be the joy of all the earth. 3 “This is the Christ, our God and Lord, Who in all need shall aid afford; He will Himself your Savour be, From all your sins to set you free. 4 He brings those blessings, long ago Prepared by God for all below, That in His kingdom bright and fair You may with us His glory share. 5 “These are the tokens ye shall mark: The swaddling clothes and manger dark; There shall ye find the young Child laid By whom the heavens and earth were made.” 6 Now let us all with gladsome cheer Follow the shepherds, and draw near To see this wondrous gift of God, Who hath His own dear Son bestowed. 7 Give heed, my heart, lift up thine eyes; Who is it in yon manger lies? Who is this child, so young and fair? The blessed Christ-child lieth there. 8 Welcome to earth, Thou noble guest, Through whom the sinful world is blest! Thou com’st to share my misery; What thanks shall I return to Thee? 9 Ah, Lord, who hast created all! How weak art Thou, how poor and small, That Thou dost choose Thine infant bed Where ass and ox but lately fed! 10 Were earth a thousand times as fair, Beset with gold and jewels rare, Yet were it far too poor to be A cradle, Son of God, for Thee. 11 Ah, dearest Jesus, holy child, Make Thee a bed soft, undefiled, Within my heart, that it may be A quiet chamber kept for Thee. 12 My heart for very joy doth leap, My lips no more can silence keep; I, too, must sing with joyful tongue That sweetest, ancient cradle-song. 13 Glory to God in highest heaven, Who unto us His Son hath given! While angels sing with pious mirth A glad new year to all the earth.

1 Let us all with gladsome voice Praise the God of heaven, Who, to bid our hearts rejoice, His own Son has given. 2 To this vale of tears He comes, Here to serve in sadness, That with Him in heaven’s fair homes We may reign in gladness. 3 We are rich, for He was poor; Is not this a wonder? Therefore praise God evermore Here on earth and yonder. 4 O Lord Christ, our Saviour dear, Be Thou ever near us; Grant us now a glad new year. Amen, Jesus, hear us.

1 Of the Father’s love begotten Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He. Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see Evermore and evermore. 2 O that birth for ever blessed When the virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, Bore the Saviour of our race, And the babe, the world’s Redeemer, First revealed His sacred face Evermore and evermore. 3 This is He whom seers in old time Chanted of with one accord, Whom the voices of the prophets Promised in their faithful word; Now He sines, the long-expected; Let creation praise its Lord Evermore and evermore. 4 O ye heights of heaven, adore Him; Angel hosts, His praises sing; All dominions, bow before Him, And extol our God and King; Let no tongue on earth be silent, Every voice in concert ring Evermore and evermore. 5 Christ, to Thee, with God the Father, And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee, Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving, And unwearied praises be, Honour, glory, and dominion, And eternal victory, Evermore and evermore.

1 O Jesus Christ, all praise to Thee, Who didst flesh assume for me, To dwell with men Thou dost not scorn, And angels shout to see Thee born. Hallelujah! 2 The heavenly Father's only Son For a manger leaves His throne; The everlasting fount of good Assumes our mortal flesh and blood. Hallelujah! 3 He whom the world cannot enclose Doth in Mary's arms repose; To be an infant small He deigns, Who all things by His power sustains. Hallelujah! 4 The light of heaven to us descends, Sunshine new to earth it lends; And brightly shines upon our night, To make us children of the light. Hallelujah! 5 The Father's Son, God ever blest, In the world became a guest; And through this vale of tears our guide, Doth in His heaven our home provide. Hallelujah! 6 In poverty to earth He came, Here to bear our sin and shame, That as His heirs in heaven above We may with angels share His love. Hallelujah! 7 For us His love these wonders wrought, Love surpassing all our thought. Then lot us all unite to raise Our song of glad unending praise. Hallelujah!

1 Come, Thou Saviour of our race, Choicest gift of heavenly grace; O Thou blessed virgin’s Son, Born Thy course for us to run. 2 Not of mortal blood and birth, He descended to the earth: By the Holy Ghost conceived, Truly man, to be believed. 3 Wondrous birth! O wondrous child Of the virgin undefiled! Though by all the world disowned, Still to be in heaven enthroned. 4 From the Father forth He came, And returneth to the same, Captive leading death and hell— High the song of triumph swell. 5 Thou, the Father’s only Son, Hast o’er sin the victory won. Boundless shall Thy kingdom be; When shall we its glories see? 6 Brightly doth Thy manger shine, Glorious is its light divine; Let not sin o’ercloud this light, Ever be our faith thus bright. 7 Praise to God the Father sing, Praise to God the Son, our King, Praise to God the Spirit be Ever and eternally.

1 Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates, Behold, the King of glory waits! The King of kings is drawing near, The Saviour of the world is here; Life and salvation He doth bring, Wherefore rejoice and gladly sing: We praise Thee, Father, now, Creator wise art Thou. 2 The Lord is just, a helper tried, With mercy ever at His side, His kingly crown is holiness, His sceptre, pity in distress, The end of all our woes He brings, Wherefore the earth is glad and sings: We praise Thee, Saviour, now, Mighty in deed art Thou. 3 O blest the land, the city blest, Where Christ the ruler is confessed! O happy hearts and happy homes To whom this King in triumph comes! The cloudless sun of joy He is, Who brings us pure delight and bliss. We praise Thee, Spirit, now, Our Comforter art Thou. 4 Fling wide the portals of your heart; Make it a temple set apart From earthly use for heaven’s employ, Adorned with prayer and love and joy; So shall your sovereign enter in, And new and nobler life being. To Thee, O God, be praise For word, and deed, and grace. 5 Redeemer, come! I open wide My heart to Thee; here, Lord, abide. Let me Thy inner presence feel, Thy grace and love in me reveal; Thy Holy Spirit guide us on Until our glorious goal is won. Eternal praise and fame We offer to Thy name.

1 Hail to the Lord’s Anointed, Great David’s greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, His reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, To set the captive free, To take away transgression, And rule in equity. 2 He comes with succour speedy To those who suffer wrong, To help the poor and needy, And bid the weak be strong; To give them songs for sighing, Their darkness turn to light, Whose souls, condemned and dying, Were precious in His sight. 3 He shall come down like showers Upon the fruitful earth, And love, joy, hope, like flowers, Spring in His path to birth; Before Him on the mountains Shall peace, the herald, go; And righteousness in fountains From hill to valley flow. 4 Kings shall bow down before Him, And gold and incense bring; All nations shall adore Him, His praise all people sing: To Him shall prayer unceasing And daily vows ascend, His kingdom still increasing, A kingdom without end. 5 O’er every foe victorious, He on His throne shall rest, From age to age more glorious, All blessing and all-blest: The tide of time shall never His covenant remove; His name shall stand for ever; That name to us is Love.

Came in deep humility. 2 Jesus comes again in mercy, When our hearts are bowed with care; Jesus comes again in answer To an earnest, heartfelt prayer. Hallelujah, hallelujah! Comes to save us from despair. 3 Jesus comes to hearts rejoicing, Bringing news of sins forgiven; Jesus comes in sounds of gladness, Leading souls redeemed to heaven. Hallelujah, hallelujah! Now the gate of death is riven. 4 Jesus comes in joy and sorrow, Shares alike our hopes and fears; Jesus comes, whate’er befalls us, Glads our hearts and dries our tears, Hallelujah, hallelujah! Cheering e’en our failing years. 5 Jesus comes on clouds triumphant, When the heavens shall pass away. Jesus comes again in glory; Let us then our homage pay, Hallelujah, hallelujah! Till the dawn of endless day.

2 What the fathers most desired, What the prophets’ heart inspired, What they longed for many a year, Stands fulfilled in glory here.
3 Abram’s promised great reward, Zion’s helper, Jacob’s Lord, Him of twofold race behold, Truly come, as long foretold.
4 Welcome, O my Saviour, now! Hail, my portion, Lord, art Thou. Here too in my heart I pray, O prepare Thyself a way.
5 King of glory, enter in, Cleanse it from the filth of sin, As Thou hast so often done, It belongs to Thee alone.
6 As Thy coming was in peace, Quiet, full of gentleness, Let the same mind dwell in me That was ever found in Thee.
7 Bruise for me the serpent’s head, That, set free from doubt and dread, I may cleave to Thee in faith, Safely kept through life and death.
8 And when Thou dost come again, As a glorious King to reign, I with joy may see Thy face, Freely ransomed by Thy grace.

1 “Comfort Comfort Ye My people, Speak ye peace”, thus saith our God: “Comfort those who sit in darkness, Mourning neath their sorrows’ load. Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them; Tell her that her sins I cover, And her warfare now is over.” 2 Yea, her sins our God will pardon, Blotting out each dark misdeed: All that well deserved His anger He no more will see or heed. She hath suffered many a day, Now her griefs have passed away; God will change her woe and sadness To unfailing joy and gladness. 3 Hark, the herald’s voice is crying In the desert far and near, Calling all men to repentance Since the kingdom now is here. O that warning cry obey: For the Lord prepare the way; Let the valleys rise to meet Him And the hills bow down to greet Him. 4 Make ye straight what long was crooked, Make the rougher places plain; Let your hearts be true and humble As befits His holy reign; For the glory of the Lord Now o’er earth is shed abroad, And all flesh shall see the token That His Word is never broken.

1 O how shall I receive Thee, How greet Thee, Lord, aright? All nations long to see Thee, My hope, my heart’s delight. O kindle, Lord most holy, Thy lamp within my breast, To do in spirit lowly All that may please Thee best. 2 Thy Zion palms is strewing, And branches fresh and fair; My heart, its powers renewing, An anthem shall prepare. My soul puts off her sadness Thy glories to proclaim; With all her strength and gladness She fain would serve Thy name. 3 Love caused Thy incarnation, Love brought Thee down to me; Thy thirst for my salvation Procured my liberty. O love beyond all telling, That led Thee to embrace, In love all love excelling, Our lost and fallen race. 4 Rejoice then, ye sad-hearted, Who sit in deepest gloom, Who mourn o’er joys departed And tremble at your doom. Despair not, He is near you, Is standing at the door, He who can help and cheer you And bids you weep no more. 5 Sin’s debt, that fearful burden, Let not your souls distress; Your guilt the Lord will pardon And cover with His grace. He comes, He comes, procuring The peace of sin forgiven, To all God’s sons securing Their heritage in heaven. 6 He comes to judge the nations, And brings His foes to naught; He comes with consolations To those who grace have sought. O hasten Thine appearing, Thou sun eternal, come, Send forth Thy beams so cheering And guide us safely home.

1 Ye sons of men, in earnest Prepare your hearts within; The wondrous Conqueror cometh, Whose power can save from sin, Whom God in grace alone Hath promised long to send us, To lighten and befriend us, And make His mercy known.
2 O set your ways in order When such a guest is nigh; Make plain the paths before Him That now deserted lie; Forsake what He doth hate, Exalt the lowly valleys, Bring down all pride and malice, And make the crooked straight.
3 The humble heart and lowly The Lord lifts up on high; The haughty heart in anguish ]Beneath His feet shall lie. The heart, sincere and right, That heeds God’s invitation And makes true preparation Is e’er the Lord’s delight.
4 Prepare my heart, Lord Jesus, Turn not from me aside, And grant that I receive Thee This blessed Advent-tide. From stall and manger low Come Thou to dwell within me; Loud praises will I sing thee And forth Thy glory show.

1 Once He came in blessing, All our ills redressing, Came in likeness lowly, Son of God most holy; Bore the cross to save us, Hope and freedom gave us. 2 Still He comes within us, Still His voice would win us From the sins that hurt us; Would to truth convert us From our foolish errors, Ere He comes in terrors. 3 Thus if thou hast known Him, Not ashamed to own Him, Nor dost love Him coldly, But wilt trust Him boldly, He will now receive thee, Heal thee, and forgive thee. 4 He who well endureth Bright reward secureth; Come then, O Lord Jesus, From our sins release us; Let us here confess Thee, Till in heaven we bless Thee.

1 O heavenly Word, eternal light, Begotten of the Father’s might, Who in these latter days art born For succour to a world forlorn: 2 Our hearts enlighten from above, And kindle with Thine own true love; That we who hear Thy call today May cast earth’s vanities away. 3 And when as judge Thou drawest nigh, The secrets of all hearts to try; Where sinners meet their awful doom, And saints attain their heavenly home. 4 O let us not for evil past, Be driven from Thy face at last; But with Thy saints for evermore Behold Thee, love Thee, and adore. 5 To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Praise, honour, might, and glory be From age to age eternally.

Let us haste, with tears of sorrow, One and all to be forgiven. 4 So when next He comes with glory, Wrapping all the earth in fear, May He then as our Defender On the clouds of heaven appear. 5 Honour, glory, might, and blessing, To the Father and the Son, With the everlasting Spirit, While eternal ages run.
