Isaiah 42:27
Isaiah notes two very misguided and foolish responses that humans make to God's moral demands: "My way is hidden from the Lord," and, "The justice due me escapes the notice of my God." Isaiah 40:21-26
Isaiah initially asks four more rhetorical questions at the beginning of this passage. The answers lead us directly to God. We look at how it is that God communicates His presence to us, beyond the direct revelation of Scripture. Isaiah tells us of the majestic sovereignty of our incomparable God over His creation and those who inhabit the earth. Isaiah 40:15-20
Isaiah uses five similes to compare man to God in this contrast between the finite and infinite. He includes one more "who" question and reveals the Lord as truly transcendent over His creation, yet we note that He loves us enough to die for us! Isaiah 40:12-14
Isaiah begins a pattern of asking six rhetorical questions each one including the query "who?" These include questions about the massiveness of creation as well as who counseled God or informed Him of what to do or taught Him knowledge. The resounding answer is, of course, no one can possibly be in such a position with sovereign, perfect infinite, eternal God!

Isaiah 40:4-7
In this passage we see prophetic aspects of Christ's second coming. Phrases in verse four and five are parallel to New Testament passages about the Lord's return. Also, God tells Isaiah, "Call out." Isaiah faithfully speaks what the Lord tells him, which is why God continues to speak to Isaiah! In verses six and seven we begin to see the comparison, which continues throughout the chapter, between finite and temporary mankind and the infinite eternal God and His word.

Isaiah 37:33-38
The ending verses of this chapter show the demise of the Assyrian army and the prophesied death of King Sennacherib. The Lord gives numerous prophetic promises which are all perfectly fulfilled. The Angel of the Lord (a preincarnate appearance of Jesus Christ) destroys all 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night thus ending the threat to Judah. Isaiah 37:21-32
King Hezekiah's powerful, humble, and God-glorifying prayer about the Assyrian-army crisis brings about an extraordinary answer from the Lord. The prophet Isaiah tells Hezekiah of the words of the Lord. God says that, according to His sovereign control, the Assyrian army would not even be allowed to attack Jerusalem! The Lord describes how He will miraculously provide for the Jews after the long siege by the Assyrian army. Both of these promises from God come to pass just as the Lord said.

Isaiah 37:14-20
King Hezekiah responds to the frightening and terrible circumstances that Judah is in, and to Isaiah's words from the Lord, with an exemplary prayer of faith and worship. Hezekiah proclaims to God of the Lord's greatness and majesty and sovereignty, and His place as creator of all things. He reminds the Lord that Sennacherib had blasphemed the Lord God! Hezekiah asks God for deliverance for the Jews, not simply so that Judah will be saved, but, "that all the kingdoms of the earth will know that You alone are God!"

The nation of Judah is in a state of crisis due to King Sennacherib and the Assyrian army. Foolishly, however, the Assyrian representative, Rabshakeh, ignorantly mocks and taunts God and even calls Him a liar! Meanwhile, God sends the prophet Isaiah to deliver a message of hope to King Hezekiah and the people of Judah. The Lord, who is sovereign in all things says, "Do not fear!"

The Assyrians, the world power at that time, are threatening the nation of Judah and the city of Jerusalem. The Assyrian army had defeated every enemy they had faced. Their spokesman is outside the walls of Jerusalem warning the Jews that they cannot possibly hope to escape the disaster they face- and the Jewish God cannot protect them! Isaiah tells of the specific fearful manifestations of God’s wrath on the world. The nation of Edom, an Old Testament enemy of Israel, is used an as example of both an historic in-time judgment that, per prophecy, never recovered, as well as a symbol of the mind-blowing extent of the worldwide destruction. Isaiah 26:5-10
Isaiah gives us a general description of the cities on which God brings judgment. These cities are marked by idolatry (crass or otherwise), greed, materialism, oppression, wickedness, violence, and pride, among other sins. The inhabitants of the wicked cities may think themselves unassailable, but God is all-powerful and unstoppable and easily accomplishes His will. Isaiah also tells us about the desire of the righteous which we break down into five points. The question we pose is, do those desires represent our desires today?

Isaiah 26:1-4
In the City God in the future, when Jesus is reigning on earth, only the righteous will be able to enter. God's people will enjoy perfect peace, absolute security, and the close presence of God "our everlasting rock." The qualifiers are that those who would enter the City of God must be righteous and faithful, steadfast of mind and trusting wholly in the Lord. We note that there are a number of things we sometimes may trust in during this life (some perhaps seemingly innocent, some not), but ultimately we must substitute nothing for Christ, but "trust in Yahweh forever."

Isaiah 11:2-5
The Holy Spirit will rest on the prophesied Messiah in a seven-fold sense. There is a permanence in the residing of the Spirit on Messiah. Out of that presence of the Holy Spirit come wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge of the whole will of God, and the reverent love and respect to fully carry out the will of God the Father. Messiah will not judge by what He sees or hears, but out of the fairness and righteousness of His character.

Isaiah 11:1-2
We briefly look at prophetic passages in Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6-7. Those two passages speak of Messiah’s name, His origin, His divinity, and the fulness of His greatness. In chapter 11, we begin to see the prophetic description of Messiah as a person. This continues through verse five. Messiah’s human origins are seen as well as the fullness of the Holy Spirit resting upon Him.

Isaiah 6:8-13
In a classic and iconic scriptural passage, God (actually the whole Trinity is speaking) asks, “who will go for Us?” Isaiah’s willing response of obedience is a powerful example to all believers! Specifically here, we recognize that God sends ALL of us to represent Him in this world. The question is not, “Am I sent?” The question is, “to whom is God sending me?” Isaiah is commissioned by the Lord for his ministry. The Lord gives a longterm prophecy about wrath, sin, and repentance, yet with a glimmer of hope for the faithful.

Isaiah 6: 3-7The Seraphim thunderously proclaim that the whole earth is full of God’s glory, but Isaiah becomes painfully aware of his own uncleanness, his own sin. God provides the atoning work for Isaiah’s guilt. As with all humanity for all of history, an awareness of our sin and our desperate need of redemption is a necessity. This must precede the redemptive atoning act of God through Jesus Christ. Out of this event comes God’s call on Isaiah- and on us.

Chapter six contains one of the greatest visions of the living God in all of Scripture. God’s message to Isaiah, and to us, assures us that God is on the throne. He is king, He is lofty, He is exalted. His angels here, known as Seraphim, each with six wings, cry out endlessly that God is holy. The emphasis on His holiness reveals that there is no attribute as essential and critical in regard to humanity, as God’s holiness.

Isaiah 2:17-22
Specific results are given by Isaiah in regard to God’s visitation; some positive and good, but some of a very judgmental nature against human evil. Isaiah begins to address the punishment of the sins seen in verses 6-8, but he quickly transitions to the Lord’s day of reckoning in the end-times. Verses 12-22 give a prophetic view of the “Eventual.” In chapter two we have seen the Ideal, the Actual, and now the Eventual. This section warns of God’s wrath around the time of the return of Jesus Christ. We see several references to judgment events in Revelation surrounding “the day of the Lord.”

Isaiah 1:16-20
Continuing in unbelief, rebellion, and hypocrisy will result in disaster for Israel. Their enemy will be enabled by God’s own hand! We see two reasons for judgment. One is simply putting an end to a vile and wicked who have forever turned away from any interest in repentance. The other reason is for disciplinary purposes. God desires to purify His people like removing dross from silver. We also look at four reasons that show it is morally acceptable for the LORD to take vengeance.

Because of the people’s hypocritical and empty practice of the actually God-ordained rituals, the Lord gives nine practices that would represent to Him real repentance and true good works, making the rituals practices meaningful and sincere. Isaiah tells the people that although their sins are as “scarlet,” with true faith repentance they can become “white as snow.”

Isaiah describes five ritual practices that the Jews were performing that God had commanded them to do in the Law. Unfortunately, their hearts were so darkened and so far from the Lord that God actually says He hates their rituals. The Lord even says that He will refuse to hear their prayers because of their extreme hypocrisy.

Isaiah 1:7-10
We begin this session with a brief discussion on four types of prophecy: prolepsis, futurism, the telescoping technique, and the issue of multiple fulfillments. The LORD God gives a four-fold description of the devastating judgment coming on Israel, the north kingdom. There is also a warning to Judah, the south kingdom, about their frail spiritual condition; better then Israel, but not good at all. Verses nine and ten have references to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and their similarity to the Jewish nations.

We begin our study in selected chapters of Isaiah by looking at historical events in the Old Testament, starting at creation. How and when did the kingdom of Israel split into two nations? Why were kings reigning in both Jewish nations when that was not God’s intention for their government? What was the spiritual condition of both Judah and Israel when Isaiah began his ministry as a prophet? The answers to these questions put the book in historical context and help to explain the nature of Isaiah’s preaching.

We end our study in Colossians with this session. Paul gives specific “how-to” instruction about our prayers lives: be devoted, be alert, be thankful, be interceding. Paul asks for intercessory prayer for himself and his missionary work. This is a strong encouragement for us to pray for missionaries! Then Paul exhorts all believers to take advantage of all opportunities for the gospel, “conducting yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity,.” A fitting close for the instruction of this tremendous epistle!

Paul includes a very strong warning statement at the end of chapter three about God’s judgment on those who do evil. For those outside of Jesus Christ the judgment is unavoidable, impartial, and consequential. Paul then goes on in chapter four to give the final “role” instruction. His teaching to “masters” (and all who are in similar authority positions) actually revolves around the Golden Rule. In verse two we begin to look at look four important points about prayer.

Paul moves on to instruction regarding the master-slave relationship. Even in this difficult reality Paul teaches on what the godly response is to be. We also note the application here to the employer-employee relationship. Additionally, Paul addresses the matter of, “whatever you do…” We look at five points related to that all-encompassing statement and the “reward of the inheritance” for serving God faithfully.

Paul continues his instruction in the matter of the biblically-defined family. Children are to be obedient to parents. We note that the Scripture does not take this matter flippantly or lightly at all. Parents, perhaps especially fathers here, are to train their children up ultimately, first and foremost, to be disciples of Jesus. We look at some very practical matters in this process.

Colossians 3:16-17
Paul gives us the several essentials of a Christian’s walk with Christ. The word of God, instruction from the Scripture, worship within the body of Christ, and being thankful to God. A combination of these practices in the Christian life enables believers to live as Paul instructs us in verse seventeen: do anything and everything unto the Lord with thanksgiving.

Paul speaks to the third of three deadly doctrines, that of asceticism, or extreme unbiblical self-denial, a type of legalism. Paul says that this asceticism is strictly the teaching of men, but it can actually appear to be wise and holy. Christ’s death and resurrection and the grace of God has set us free from the supposed need to appease God with unbiblical self-denial even to the point of self-injury. Plus, these practices are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

We look at six dangers of angel worship as well as several warnings about the characteristics of those who practice this type of idolatry.

Paul continues to address the four results of being made alive together with Christ. The third result is the canceling out of “certificate of debt” against us. The fourth result is that the debt is nailed to the cross. The power of the cross is seen in the disarming of the “rulers and authorities.” Paul says that it was by the cross of Christ that the triumph came.

Paul addresses our spiritual burial with Christ through the work of the cross and also our spiritual resurrection as a result of faith in Jesus. Although we were formerly spiritually dead, He made us alive together with Christ. Paul states the first two of four results of being made alive together with Him.

Paul continues to emphasize our position in Christ. We are “made complete” in Him. We take a look at the practical implications of that statement. We are also circumcised spiritually in Him. This is a circumcision that sets us free from the otherwise necessary dominion of sin. Additionally, Paul, yet again, gives us another facet of Christ’s deity; He is head over ALL rule and authority.

In this lesson Paul makes a strong and Irrefutable statement about the deity of Jesus Christ. Paul has talked previously about our willing captivity to Jesus Christ as opposed to being captives to Satan and the world. What does life look like as a willing captive to Jesus? Four points: bring every thought captive to Christ, follow the Master’s agenda, be satisfied with what the Master gives, and recognize that what the Master gives will always be best and what we truly need.

In the session, Paul instructs his readers to be devoted, not deluded. Don’t be fooled by Satan’s deception or by persuasive worldly philosophies even though they may sound wise or profound. Paul exhorts us to five important practices: walk in Christ, be firmly rooted in Him, be established in your faith just as you were instructed, and always overflow with gratitude and thanksgiving to the Lord.

In the lesson, Paul mentions four struggles that he faces on behalf of the Colossian church and must address for their edification. First, that their hearts may be encouraged, not discouraged by wrong teaching. Second, that they may be knit together, rather than divided by false teachers. Third, that they may attain to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding the truth of God. And, fourth, that they may have a true knowledge of Jesus Christ Himself.

Verses 26-29.Paul teaches about the mystery of the gospel, hidden for ages, but now manifested. The mystery was Christ in us. Paul is careful to note that gentiles are included in God’s plan. Paul encapsulates the mission of the church in that he wants to proclaim Christ to every man, admonishing and teaching with great wisdom in order to make all believers complete in Christ.

In verses 23-25, Paul continues addressing the all-important matter of being firmly established and steadfast in our walk with Christ. He talks about his own position in the church including the reality of suffering and his own willingness to do so on behalf of believers and in obedience to the Lord. God may call us to the same! Additionally, Paul mentions three positions he has in Christ’s church: minister, steward, and preacher.

The Apostle Paul closes out this great Christological passage by proclaiming Jesus Christ to be reconciler of all things in verses 20-23. Paul organized his thoughts in groupings of threes. Three facets of reconciliation, three conditions we were in before Jesus reconciled us to himself, three spiritual states we are after reconciliation, and three conditions to be met as we present ourselves before the Lord.

Paul continues in verses 16-20, to teach about the nature and the work of Christ. Not only is Jesus Christ the creator of all things, He is the purpose or goal of creation. As God Himself, Jesus pre-existed all things and He holds all things together. In regard to the church, Jesus is the head, the origin, and the pre-eminent One. Again addressing Jesus divinity, Paul says all the fullness, all the deity, dwells is Jesus.

In verse thirteen, Paul begins what many consider to be the greatest christological passage in the entire New testament. Paul addresses the potential heresies creeping into the church at Colossi. Paul makes the reality of both Jesus’ divinity and Jesus’ humanity abundantly clear. In this session we learn that Jesus is the Christian’s means of deliverance from spiritual darkness and king of the heavenly kingdom. He alone is redeemer of mankind, the image of God, and creator of all things.

We continue in verses 9-12 in the study of Paul’s intercessory prayer for the Colossians. Paul prays that the believers at Colossi would not only increase in the knowledge of God, but that they would have greater power in the Lord, being steadfast and patient. Paul emphasizes the importance of being thankful and that God has actually qualified us through Christ’s sacrifice to share in the inheritance of the saints! This session closes with six important and practical points to direct our own intercessory prayers.

Verses 6-12. We look at the fifth of five truths of the gospel Paul has given in verses 5-8; the Colossians had, “understood the grace of God in truth.” Two aspects of legalism are discussed in relation to this. Also, we begin the study of Paul’s prayer of intercession including the matters of knowing God’s will, walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, and bearing fruit in every good work. These are essential facets of the Christian life.

In our final session in second peter, we continue and finish the eight exhortations that the Apostle Peter gives us as to how we are to live in light of Jesus’ return.
We look at the problem of those who have never heard of Jesus or the gospel, the intense conditions at Jesus return, and the first two of the final eight exhortations in Second Peter.
Peter continues to address the problem of those who deny the Lord’s return as well as those wonder about the seeming delay of The Second Coming.
In chapter three, Peter teaches about the second coming of Christ. In this session Peter addresses the problem of those who deny the Lord’s literal physical return.
Peter finishes chapter two with relentless warnings about false teachings, describing their spiritual condition and how they entice even believers. Also, those who follow false teachers may have been saved, but they are horribly snared by sin.
Peter continues to tell us about the wicked and ungodly character of the false teachers in the categories of their animality and avarice.
Beginning in 2 Peter 2:10, Peter addresses three extremely serious categories of wickedness practiced by false teachers and the consequences of these. We study the first two; audacity and animality.
2 Peter 2:4-9. Peter addresses the matter of inescapable judgement coming on false teachers. He uses four references to Old Testament events to prove God's righteous judgement on those trying to mislead the church.
2 Peter 2:1-3. Peter addresses the inevitable judgment and destruction of false teachers and we look at an overview of the varying states of the soul described in the Bible after death.

Peter emphasizes the origin of the Scripture is in the Holy Spirit, not mere human thought, and that false teachers and false prophets introduce non-biblical destructive teaching in the church.
The testimony of God the Father in the Transfiguration that Jesus is Messiah and the objective testimony of the Scriptures of Jesus as Savior, Messiah, and incarnate God.
2nd Peter 1:12-16. Peter’s heart as a pastor in continuing to reminding his readers of truth; the first two of four categorical witnesses as to how we know Christianity is true.
2 Peter 1:9-11. Peter emphasizes the application of the virtues from verses 5-7 and through their practice to make certain of salvation.
Peter gives us the “Golden Chain of Virtues” that ought to mark our character as Christians and then encourages us to be fruitful in the qualities.
Peter says God has given us all we need for life and godliness; we look at nine blessings related to that, as well as two results of God's magnificent promises.
We begin our study in 2 Peter.
2 Peter was written to defend the faith against false teachers and false doctrines. Peter begins the epistle by telling his readers that he is both an apostle and a servant.
God is the salvation of His people and although judgment is coming, Habakkuk, having recalled the power and glory of the Lord, makes one of the greatest commitments to the Living God in all of the Bible.
Habakkuk pronounces God’s great power in terms of His control over nature and as a warrior who comes in judgment.
Habakkuk continues to proclaim the Lord’s power by means of God’s past works and in his description of God coming as a warrior.
God is the sovereign lord over all gods and spiritual powers. All that He does is for eternal purposes including all the aspects of His redemptive work in our lives.
The second part of Habakkuk chapter three is “The Pronouncement of God’s power,” vs 3-15. In this session we begin to look at God’s past works with emphasis on what the LORD did in delivering His people from Egypt some 800 years prior to Habakkuk.
Woe #5 concludes with stunning contrasts between idols and the true living God; chapter three begins with Habakkuk's prayer in awe of God and his request for the Lord to revive His people
We consider three observations about idols and two stunning contrasts between idols and the living God of creation.
The Lord speaks to Babylon with the fourth “woe,” addressing debauchery and the sowing and reaping principle; and woe #5, the devastating and destructive matter of idolatry. Both of these issues have major application in today’s culture.
In Habakkuk chapter 2, Woe #3, the LORD continues to speak of judgment coming on Babylon, but He also mentions a fabulous and extraordinary future time in which the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD.
In this session we see God pronouncing the first two of five “woes” on Babylon pertaining to their sins of extreme greed and wanton violence. We also discuss the issue of where we, as God’s people, are putting our security in a culture that has striking parallels to that of ancient Babylon.
The Lord continues to speak to Habakkuk about the sin of Babylon. God also proclaims the great truth about salvation, “The just shall live by faith.” Paul refers to this verse in his great thesis on redemption.
God begins to address the coming judgement on Babylon in the time of Habakkuk and also hints at the future judgement of “mystery Babylon” in Revelation 17 & 18. God describes the wickedness of Babylon and we look at some ways to battle sin in our own lives.
Habakkuk responds to God’s warning of coming judgment with perplexity, distress, and complaints against the Lord’s plans. Habakkuk stands ready to receive a rebuke, but the Lord says to record the words of the vision so that all may know His purposes.
Habakkuk responds to the Lord’s warning of coming judgment with perplexity and uncertainty yet he proclaims the greatness of God to bring perspective and assurance.
The coming of the Babylonians for judgment on Judah is seen on the light of Deut. 28 and Jeremiah 52, which describes the destruction of Jerusalem. Also, the justice of God in using Babylon and eight lessons about God from verses 1-11.
The Lord answers.
Habakkuk’s question and complaint telling him that He is bringing the Babylonians in to judge His own people. The description of the Babylonian army is sobering.
Habakkuk looks at culture and recognizes that the moral has been abandoned. He notes four disastrous results of the rejection of God’s law.
Habakkuk begins his book of prophecy by asking God, "Why LORD? Why do you delay to answer my prayers?" No doubt a question all Christians have asked. We look at six biblical reason why God delays in answer prayer requests.
The first lesson is an Old Testament overview that moves all the way from creation to the time of Habakkuk’s prophetic ministry around 608 BC, which anticipates the coming of Babylon for judgment of Judah.
