“If you want something done right, you need to do it yourself” is one of the most commonly-heard - and damaging - ideas espoused by managers, administrators, and others in charge. Are your relationships on the right track? Our society holds up images of interpersonal connections that are often either picture-perfect or surface-level. How would you rate the quality of your relationships? Whether it’s with your spouse, children, parents, coworkers, or friends, the quality of your life is often determined by the quality of your relationships. If your relationships are struggling or deteriorating, life can be difficult. The problem is that we tend to be more intentional with strangers andacquaintances than with our closest friends and family. How do we fight against this tendency and shore up our relationships? Pastor Danny shares two practical strategies you can put into practice to reinvest in your most important relationships. Traditional time management practices are broken. No matter how hard we work, we tend to think that if we were just a little more skilled and disciplined, we could get everything done. We create false expectations and put unrealistic pressure on ourselves to squeeze value out of every moment. Then, when we inevitably fall short of this idol, we beat ourselves up and feel like a failure. What if there was a better way? Pastor Danny shares a new approach to time management so that we can achieve our goals and fulfill our calling without sacrificing our joy, contentment, and peace. Reading is one of the most valuable activities that we can do. Books can help shape our perspectives, increase our knowledge, grow our wisdom, and inspire us to greater heights. Yet, reading can feel like a chore that we don't have time to do consistently. Pastor Danny shares four ways that reading changes us for the better and gives some helpful tips on making the time to do it
Whether it’s in our jobs, our relationships, or in pursuing a goal, we all run into obstacles. Something comes along on our journey or process that gets in the way. It could be a difficult co-worker, relational tension with a family member, or an unexpected project assigned by our boss. It could be excruciating and traumatic such as an alcoholic parent, chronic pain or illness, or the death of a loved one.
The average person makes 35,000 choices a day. (226 of them are just about food!) While it’s true that our choices are not the only thing that shapes our future, they play a huge part. In fact, we are where we are today primarily because of the choices we have made. Our choices have consequences in big and small ways, and when we make great choices, we get to partner with God in shaping our future.
We all have goals and desires for the most important areas of our lives. We want the best for our health, careers, marriages, and relationships. Most of us set out to make positive changes with the best intentions. We hit the ground running, but over time the desires fade, we lose our motivation, and we don’t see the results we hoped.
Our minds are a lot like our bodies. Just as physical strength varies from person to person, mental strength varies as well. Two people can experience the same type of problem; however, how they handle the problem can be completely different.
Recently at Emmanuel Church, Pastor Danny completed a weekend message series on marriage and relationships called Making It Work. During the series, he was joined by his wife of 21 years, Jackie Anderson, to share insights and principles on how to cultivate a healthy marriage. This series included a Q+A with questions submitted by Emmanuel Church attendees. In this episode of the Breakthrough Podcast, they answer more of your questions.
Intensity is not always easy to grasp and cultivate. Almost all of us can get excited and make progress for a short period, but maintaining it consistently to the finish line can be challenging. Contrary to what we might believe, we don't stay in one place when we stop moving forward. We start to slip backward.
2020 has come to an end. Many of us are ready to turn the page and look forward to a new year of possibility and opportunity. The prospect of a fresh start motivates us to set resolutions, goals, and aspirations for the year ahead. But if you want 2021 to be the year you push past your setbacks and have the breakthroughs you desire, don't start by setting goals and making resolutions.
As 2020 ends, the world feels chaotic and unstable. With a global pandemic, racial tension, economic uncertainty, and political divisiveness, data shows that many people are struggling to cope. 45,000 Americans are committing suicide each year. 72,000 have experienced an overdose. And for the third year in a row, the average lifespans for Americans has shortened.
Our culture is all over the place when it comes to what is acceptable and unacceptable sexual behavior. Our world is hyper-sexualized and many of us walk around with temptation right in our pockets in the form of our cell phones. Pornography use is skyrocketing and leading to broken marriages and relationships. 20 million new cases of STDs are transmitted each year. And, arguable most tragic of all, sex trafficking is an epidemic in this country and all over the world.
It’s a safe bet that you have to deal with a difficult person at some point during your day. Whether it’s someone negative, pessimistic, aggressive, passive-aggressive, doesn’t follow through, or gossips, we all have to interact with people who can sometimes make life hard. If we don’t figure out how to navigate these relationships, we’re going to live a life filled with high levels of frustration and an absence of joy and peace.
Are you nervous? It’s easy to look at the state of the world right now and feel anxious, overwhelmed, and even afraid. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, upcoming U.S. election, economic uncertainty, racial tension and unrest, and chaotic fall school semester, many of us are feeling on edge.
There is so much negativity in our world today, and it’s easy to get swept up into the flow of negative news, opinions, and media. Optimism is difficult. Staying positive means we have to swim upstream to break through the current of pessimism. The good news, though, is that we have a choice. While it doesn’t come naturally to most of us, we can choose to be positive.
Are you intimidated by prayer? Do you struggle to make time to pray consistently? Do you feel unworthy of talking to God? Has disappointment over unanswered prayers in the past kept you convinced that prayer doesn’t work?
The COVID-19 crisis has created a lot of uncertainty. With that uncertainty comes anxiety and fear. Many are out of work, or trying to navigate working from home while also homeschooling children. At times, it’s hard to even remember what life was like when we could come and go whenever and wherever we wanted. It seems like a lifetime ago that we were able to gather with family and friends.
Wait, aren’t we told that we need to be more content? Yes, it’s true that God wants us to rest in the care and provisions that He gives to us every single day. But, there is a positive form of discontent. It’s the inner disgust over the status quo and the way things are. If we understand it properly, it can be the fuel we need to achieve our goals and make progress in our spiritual life, marriage, finances, relationships and careers.
All of us want to make positive changes in our lives. The new year brings with it the promise of a fresh start or a clean slate. Whether it’s getting into shape, saving more money, learning a new skill, creating better habits, quitting bad habits, or spending more time with the people we love, each of us want to end the year better than where we started.
No one gets through life without dropping the ball. We’ve all experienced failure – whether in our professional life, our personal life, or our spiritual life. Failure is painful, but it’s also inevitable. If we don’t learn how to deal with it, we’ll never reach our potential. What if we didn’t look at failure as a bad thing, though? What if we saw it as a necessary step on the path to ultimate victory? Learning to reframe failure could just be the breakthrough you need to get life back on track.
Anxiety is an epidemic, affecting 40 million Americans. So many of us feel stressed, overcommitted, and overwhelmed with responsibilities. We’re more isolated than we’ve ever been before – “connected” by our devices and social media but lacking the community we crave. And on top of that, we’re overloaded with information and news on a daily basis. What is the root cause of anxiety? And what can we do to overcome it? Learn 5 practices you can put in place today to find more peace, control your mind, and break free from anxiety.
If you’re like most people, mornings stink. We might hit the snooze button three or four (or eight) times, or grab our devices and check social media and the news before we even get out of bed. We feel late, rushed, and barely have time to get dressed let alone shower, eat breakfast, and connect with our families. We start the day stressed, frustrated, and overwhelmed. The truth is, we all have a morning routine. The question is whether or not it’s any good. In this episode, learn two benefits to designing a great morning routine, along with six elements you can implement to set yourself up for a productive and rewarding day.
Studies show that nearly 80% of our thoughts on a daily basis are negative. Whether it’s criticism, doubt, or condemnation of ourselves or others, negative thoughts can have terrible consequences. Our thoughts lead to emotions, and our emotions drive behavior. What makes it even more challenging is that our minds are wired to focus on the negative. Like any bad habit, it can be challenging to overcome negative thinking. But we do have control over what we think about. Learn five strategies to stop negative thinking.
We’ve all been there. Whether it’s a big project, an upcoming test, a difficult conversation, or a looming deadline, often the hardest thing to do is to get started. Procrastination is the act of putting of something that you know you should do now. It always leads to regret. We miss a deadline, the quality of work is poor, our stress levels increase, and we may even get into trouble. The biggest problem, though, is that we never reach our potential and accomplish the work we set out to do. So, why do we procrastinate? And how do we overcome it? Pastor Danny shares five tips on how to break through our habit of procrastination and get the right things done now.

How do we know when it’s time to move on? Emptiness is a feeling nearly everyone struggles with at some point. We may feel numb and bored, or that our life lacks purpose, direction, and meaning. It can be scary to feel this way. In our fear, we sometimes turn to comfortable or convenient fixes to fill the void. But what if feelings of emptiness aren’t necessarily a bad thing? What if they were simply a signal pointing us to something better?
“Where are you, God?” For anyone who follows Jesus, there inevitably comes a time where we hit a dry spell. We’ve drifted away from God, and we’ve lost a sense of his presence. We’ve maybe lost interest in church and are no longer spending much time with him. When this happens, it’s hard to know what to do. How do we get the fire back and rekindle our intimacy with the Lord? Or, if we’re not yet followers of Jesus, how do we begin cultivating a relationship with him? Learn 4 steps you can take when you feel distant from God.
A habit is something we do without even thinking. It has become second nature. Studies show that 40% of our everyday behavior is habitual. And all habits create a result – good or bad. If we desire a breakthrough, it’s time to start evaluating our habits. Learn 3 strategies you can use to create the habits you need to improve the quality of your life.
Life can be discouraging. We all have expectations of how we hope or wish life would go, and then, things don’t turn out that way. What do we do when we don’t get the job, the test result comes back positive, or we give into temptation yet again. Learn 3 strategies you can use to bounce back from disappointment.
Life can be overwhelming. We can sometimes feel like we are being pulled in many different directions. And if we’re not careful, we can let our most important relationships and responsibilities suffer. How do we learn to say no so that we have the space to focus on what really matters?
