5 Methods of Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina traditionally consists of four steps:
• Lectio (Read): We begin by reading a passage of Scripture slowly and attentively. The goal is
not to cover large amounts of text, but to savor each word and phrase.
• Meditatio (Meditate): We reflect on the text we've read, ruminating on its meaning and
allowing it to speak to our lives. We ponder what God might be saying to us through this
specific passage.
• Oratio (Pray): We respond to the passage in prayer. This could involve asking for guidance,
expressing gratitude, or simply conversing with God about what we've read and meditated
upon.
• Contemplatio (Contemplate): We rest in God's presence, moving beyond words to a quiet
communion with the Divine. This is a time of listening and being rather than speaking or
doing."

First, you can’t rely on the same small group of people in your ministry over the long haul. Building new members and teams is the key to growing successfully
METHOD 1 Rotate members within the whole ministry area
Pros:
- One big happy family?
- May offer more flexibility for the people individual schedule
- May help less experienced musicians connect with other more experienced musicians
Cons:
- Mix all levels of musicians
- Hard to reach synergy because people are always rotating
- Harder to get deeper relationships within the team
METHOD 2: Rotate complete bands together as a team
(Team Erod, Team Speed, Team Wildman)
Pros:
- People get comfortable with each other
- You can skill batch and train easier
- More experienced bands/members don’t get frustrated and lower skilled musicians don’t get intimidated
- Easier to scale and build more teams
Cons:
- Style may be segregated
- Some bands will be better and could become the preferred team

- Probably the most overlooked element of a setlist. How do you get smoothly from one song to the next
- Instrumentally shifting the key
- Pray. What should you say?
- Read a scripture.
- Prepare your transitions and practice as needed.

Show Notes:
ONE: Organize your “big 50” into three sections; fast, mid-tempo, and slow.
TWO: Consider the state of your congregation, as well as the intent of the service.
On a typical Sunday, you’ll want to open with a mid-tempo song. People will still be coming in, getting settled, looking to see who came to church, etc. This is also an ideal spot for introducing a new song, because they will start to hear and become familiar with it without any serious obligation to sing along. If it is a special day, with reason to celebrate, you can open with something up-tempo.
THREE: Construct a setlist that encourages worship.
With the first song out of the way, you will see the congregation begin to participate more. Another mid-tempo piece is appropriate in spot number two, or a fast song. On the second song, people may clap along or raise hands, if that’s acceptable at your church. Putting a slow song in the second spot is, generally speaking, a hindrance to the flow of worship. It’s a little like asking someone to marry you on a first date. It’s just too soon.
FOUR: How long is your setlist?
The tempo of song number three depends on the length of your set. Many churches, like ours, have a three song setlist. In this case, the third song is the last song, making it a good place to put a slow song. If you have the luxury of a four song setlist, your third song could be mid-tempo or slow.
FIVE: Offering
If you have music during the offering, consider how long it typically takes for your offering to be collected. At some churches, it does not take as long as a 3 minute song. In that case, an instrumental excerpt from one of the songs in your setlist is a good choice. Just once through the verse and chorus may be enough. If you’re at a larger church and offering takes longer, this is an ideal place for a solo or “special”. It’s also another place where a new song may be introduced.
SIX: The Closer.
Typically, it’s nice to end on a slow song, in order to allow the congregation to reflect on the sermon. However, if you know ahead of time that the preacher is speaking about spiritual victory or some other rousing topic, then sending people out on a high note is the way to go. A fast song is ideal here. The closing spot is also a good place to include a special song or new song.

The charts will likely move faster than your congregation.
TWO MAIN REASONS FOR THE BIG 50 - This is important for your church and for your team
- First, your church will learn to sing and connect with God through the BIG 50 songs. When they hear them on the radio or at home, they will be reminded and drawn to a worship experience.
- Second, your band will become GOOD, REALLY GOOD, at the songs they know and love….. too many new songs and the band will struggle and suffer.
LIVE WITH THE SONGS FIRST
- Spotify playlist
- Youtube Playlists
- Jam with the songs in your key
- Worship with the songs alone (car, devotion time, etc
Ask yourself some questions:
- Where is the song pointing?

First, why does the mix on our live feed sound TERRIBLE?
Problem1 - it's mixed for the live audience not the live feed
Fix: setup a separate mix for the live feed

Problem: My vocals sound terrible recorded on the live fee
Fix: use lots of reverb and a ROOM MIC in your mix to create the natural vocal sound you want to hear
Problem: The bass guitar sounds weak on the live recording
Fix: Use a bass processor and/or a tube preamp setup made specifically for the bass.... ditch the standard idea of just going direct. It doesn't produce the right sound you are looking for
Things that worked for your room mix just don't work the same for the LIVE streaming mix. You have to tweak and make adjustments to your setup. You have to be intentional
How should the musicians change and adapt so they get the best LIVE STREAMING sound?
Let's go one-by-one
Acc Guitar
- Strum softer - don't bang the guitar
- Use some processing (compressor, verb)
- Going direct sounds flat
Voice
- Use the CORRECT mic for YOUR voice
- Use a pop filter and don't work the mic as much
- Mix with tons of reverb and compression
- Make sure you are using a ROOM mic in your overall setup to get the natural sounds of the room in the sound.
Drums
- Play with dynamics but not as much dynamics (keep it more steady in dynamic range)
- Use far less CRASH cymbals to cut down on mid range noise
Bass
- Don't go direct, use a bass processor or preamp!
- Know you bass, tweak your bass, understand how to play it to get the best recorded sound
- Don't slap your bass or make it pop
- Mix with plenty of compression and low end
Keyboard
- Play less overall
- Play intentionally - don't chunk around on chords all over the mix
- Find a spot you can come out in the mix and play that stuff
- Don't change your volume on the keyboard in the service.... make sure all your patches come out the SAME VOLUME.
Electric Guitar
- Seek out killer tone (pedals, pickups, etc) Look for every advantage
- Electric guitars can be harsh, work with your tone alone and know what sounds good in the room
- When using an amp, be familiar with the mic placement and make sure it's right every time.
- When using single coil pickups, make sure they don't hum and buzz when its silent in the room
- FIND ROOM IN THE MIX
- Play the right parts..... learn the right parts.... don't make stuff up!

7) Sing the Psalms and the great prayers of the scriptures regularly in times of personal devotion.
8) The depth of your worship on the public stage is a billboard of where you are in the secret place.
9) Character is developed in obscurity and tested in the limelight. Don't be too hasty to get on a big stage when your character isn't ready to sustain you there.
10) Don't be tempted to idolize the sound of worship of your house, church or generation. God is multi-generational and transcends cultural aesthetics. Love your sound but don't worship it.

Ten Tips for Worship Leaders.
1) Make sure you have a development plan that addresses your skills, character and leadership potential. You don't become a well-rounded worship leader by accident; be intentional about growth.
2) Invest time, money and training in your gifts and skills. Raw talent makes for a good one hit wonder but isn't enough for sustainable ministry.
3) Find and commit to a mentor who has your permission to evaluate your progress and motivation. Whether that be your Worship Pastor, Pastor or another experienced Worship Leader.
4) Learn to worship in the absence of music to ensure music doesn't become the object of your worship. That's harder to do than it sounds for most of us due to our modern dependence on music for worship.
5) Learn and try out new songs as guided by your context. Sometimes our reluctance to learn new songs is laziness masked by a preference for tradition.
6) Learn your hymns too and try to find ways to make them fresh and musically accessible.

NUMBER 1 - Pick songs months in advance
NUMBER 2 - Give song lists / Spotify / iTunes playlists months in advance
NUMBER 3 - Give production notes / expectations / pick keys / IN ADVANCE
- Makes it easy for people to practice
- Gives your band a chance to succeed
- Remember each band member is at a different level
- Nobody is going to complain about over preparation
NUMBER 3 - Start rotating team
- Rotate whole teams (Red, Blue, Black)
- Rotate musicians within a large team - but Use basic rules (Zach plays drums the 1st and 3rd Sunday every month)
NUMBER 4 - Plan ahead for technical difficulty and put a team in place
- Have extra cables on hand
- Have a sound tech or two at rehearsal to help
- Have a plan B and know what’s going on in every area (you are the leader after all)
NUMBER 5 - Be the first one there… and have everything ready
