In the last chapter of the the letter of Ephesians, Paul is telling them that The Christian life has all resources you need to stand, to persist, to endure, to thrive. Paul uses the imagery of an armor to illustrate these resource2. The reason why we have such a hard time growing is that we have these resources available to us but we're not putting them on.3. Today we will talk about the Sheild of Faith a. Why the Devil is after us and the weapon he uses against us b. How the Sheild of Faith protects usI. We have an enemy of immense power, superior intelligence, who hates us intensely and wants to destroy us. Vs 10-12 a. Satan hates us intensely and wants to destroy us b. He has immense power against us c. He has superior intelligence and will scheme against us d. The weapon he uses is the flaming arrows—the form of trialsII. We must protect ourselves against his schemes by taking up the shield of faith. Vs 16 a. The fires can do two things to us! i. In the hands of the Satan and his dominion, it’s meant to destroy and consume us. 1. If we don’t have the shield of faith. It’ll nullify the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals—it’ll render those things mute. ii. In the hands of God, fire can only refine us. If we put on the shield of faith. 1. The fire in the hands of God will only purify away the dross and refine the gold that’s there. b. Taking up the shield of faith means... i. When we see the momentary pleasure and ease of the moment is absolutely tinsel compared to the glory of God and what’s to come! We know it! Not just hopeful, dreamy knowledge. I. A decision vs 17-19, 22-23
a. Realizing that without God, everything you hold on to or put energy in has no meaning.
b. There must be a decisive, deliberate decision to put off the old self and put on the new self.
II. A new way of thinking vs 23
a. There’s a transformation of your thinking
i. Your motive changes
ii. How you know something is true changes
III. A life of captivation vs 23
a. You can’t just do it, it has to be done upon you.

Anything built that has no eternal value will not. ii. Spend your life building on what will last. 2. People of the Word - Those who twist the word a. Progressive Christianity i. Sells itself as a valid option for Christians. ii. Seems more acceptable, more likable, a more palatable version of The faith. iii. But at the heart of it, it really is not Christianity at all. b. Progressive Christianity Symptoms i. Faith is celebrated, but not The Faith ii. Belief in Jesus can be both orthodox and blasphemous. iii. Love for God is defined whether you are loving people. iv. Hypercritical of Evangelical Christians v. Bible is important for some spiritual truth but is majorly flawed. c. Heart of Progressive Christianity - “Maybe Eve was never meant to be our warning, maybe she was meant to be our model. Own your wanting, eat the apple.”—inner voice is the guiding factor. i. Sin is no longer what’s wrong with the world, but unrealized ambition. My inner need is a spiritual one. It’s liberating, cause you’re casting off the shackle of the Christianity you’ve been raised in and you’re able to forge your own path, with Jesus and the bible along to approve of you. ii. Inner sense of goodness and personal purpose are your spiritual authority. iii. You’re the hero of the journey, therefore the idea of God judging you is in conflict. 3. Be People of the Word a. High View of Scripture and High Knowledge of the word

b. Point is to continuously deal with the sins in our lives

i. “We are always bound to something, to say you’re not is lying to yourself. To liberate yourself in music, you must constrain, bind yourself, to practice. True freedom is not the absence of constraint but rather teh choice of which liberating constraints to put yourself under.”

i. Physical healing: gave him food

iii. Spiritual healing: gave him direction to find God

II. Two Problems to deal with (Is this really for us? If I follow God on Rest, I won’t get anything done…I can’t study my exams properly, I won’t get my job done, I can’t manage it)
a. Is this promise for us?
i. I thought this is Jewish law? Aren’t Christians free from the law?
ii. Yes! The 10 commandments is permanent. They traverse the centuries and never changes.

It’s always wrong to worship another God, to make idols for yourself.

It’s always going to be wrong to murder someone, to sleep with another person’s spouse.

These commands are permanent, they speak to the very moral reality of our soul.
iii. Christ even said, Man was not made for the Sabbath…It wasn’t like, God made a day and didn’t know what to do with it and said, okay guess I’ll make some people to observe it.

No, the Sabbath was made for man. God has given you a day. To step out from the chores, the burdens, the tasks, and cares of life.

A day to step into joy, a day to delight.
b. The second problem is, great, but I won’t get done what I need to get done.
i. The promise is this “If you will take that one day to Rest, God will see that you will accomplish what you need to do on the other six days.”
c. Where is that in the bible?
i. Exodus 16 the story of the manna
ii. Leviticus 25, the Sabbath year
iii. This is the promise of God’s gift to you.

We know that work is not a negative thing, because our God worked. We know that work is not just a means to an end, but rather it’s God’s way of caring, loving and serving the world through our work.

However, sometimes when we think of work being spiritual, we only think of positions like pastors, and teachers and missionaries. We don’t think that our daily, ordinary work life has any big spiritual impact. Today I want to share with you that some of the greatest movement that God did in the early church was by simple ordinary individuals doing simple ordinary things

Today I want to share with you in this passage how ordinary people who lived lives of ordinary faithfulness, were used by God to do extraordinary things.

We will see how they chose to…
a. Live with Missional Intention
b. Work on Ordinary Practices

I. Live with Missional Intention vs 1-4
a. Paul, Aquila, and Priscilla—no matter where they go, they lived with missional intention.
b. Mission is living with intention. There’s a purposeful way which you orient your life.
c. Are you living with a missional intention for God’s Kingdom?
II. Work on Ordinary Practices vs 24-26
a. Community
i. Knowing who they are in Christ, they sought to create community with all people, despite differences.
b. Hospitality
i. Opening up their homes to Paul and Apollos
ii. Aquila and Priscilla reminds us that the smallest unassuming faithful task of hospitality can advance the kingdom movement of God in ways we cannot imagine.
III. Achieving Extraordinary Outcomes vs 27-28
a. Gospel piece for Apollos
i. Ended up arguing eloquently for Jesus being the Messiah in Achaia.
Passage: Ephesians 6:5-9 Sermon Notes: Intro: 1. Rhythm Series a. Based on the background belief that you know who your Savior is. 2. How are you sure of your salvation? Is it... a. Because you have tried your best to be a good Christian? b. Because you believe in God and tried to do His will? c. Because you believe in God with all of your heart? 3. Any of those answers reveals that Jesus is NOT your Savior. a. The only right answer to the question, “how are you sure of your salvation,” is “because I am sure of my Savior.” 4. What does this have to do with work? a. As a sign and seal of your salvation, the result is God is now working in you convicting and changing you in areas of your life, to conform you more into the image of His son. b. One of those areas is how you conduct your life with Work.
I. Elephant in the Room (Slavery) vs 5 a. The bible condemns kidnapping and slave trading (1 Timothy 1:10; Deuteronomy 24) b. Slavery in the scripture is equivalent to Bankruptcy Laws i. Indentured Servants to pay back debt c. Slaves had rights d. Paul’s writing sets the stage for the eradication of chattel slavery i. Human life is made in the image of God II. Work wholeheartedly for the Lord vs 6-8 a. Without Christ, rhythm of work is for our personal identity or a personal means “...not only to win their favor when their eye is on you.” b. With Christ, rhythm of work is for God’s service “...but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart” i. You are to work wholeheartedly for the Lord because all kinds of work that are not evil is a way that God is healing, loving and serving others through you. ii. Ask yourself, “Am I approaching my work today with God’s mindset?” c. Work wholeheartedly for the Lord i. The tension you must deal with always in work is, “am I serving the LORD or am I serving myself.”

If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing ~ C.S. Lewis
Prayer Point: Pray to the Father in a Fresh way! Seek His reality and His presence, by meditation on your position and who He says He is to you.
- Communal a. Jesus gave us a corporate model of prayer i. When you pray say, “Our Father!” ii. Because we can never see more of God on our own. iii. God is infinite and there’s so much of God to be revealed. If I want more of God, I need more of You.
Prayer Point: Maybe it’s time to pray to join a small group. And if you’re already in a small group, maybe it’s time to start praying to build deeper relationships rather than the superficial one.
Passage: Romans 8:15 Sermon Notes: Intro: The way we pray to the Father is indicative of our spiritual relationship to Him. a. The prayer of His children i. Primal ii. Real iii. Positional
- Primal: ‘we cry, ABBA’ a. Abba—closer to a child saying DADA i. Instinctive call of a child who just wants their Father ii. Language of wonder b. Praying in the Spirit i. As infants of God we receive a new language—a desire to speak to Him. ii. Without the spirit, our prayers are more hypocritical—we pray only when we want something.
Prayer Point: Is your prayer life hypocritical or primal? Evaluate if your prayers are mechanical or is it spiritual?
- Real: ‘we CRY, Abba’ a. Represents someone in distress calling out i. Reminder that Christians suffer like everybody else, there’s no special treatment if you’re a believer. ii. Only thing special is how we handle it b. Christians cry in the midst of the world’s sorrow, is the cry for the coming joy. i. This cry, matures you, fortifies you, shields you, solidifies your resolve, strengthen your endurance, deepens your wisdom. c. Prayer refines you
Prayer Point: Evaluate whether your prayer life is about consuming things you want from God, or is it sanctifying your character in God?
- Positional: ‘Spirit of Sonship’ a. Jesus tells us to pray to “Our Father” i. To know God as ‘Father’ is how we know our identity and have the strength to grow and be refine. b. Every Christian has the same claim as Jesus. i. Because Jesus bought you into the family by His blood

- What David Wanted for His People a. David desire to get the presence of God into the midst of his people i. Ark
Prayer Point: How far would you go, how much would you risk, how much will you work to ensure that the presence of God is in the midst of those around you? Maybe it’s time to start PRAYING for the passion and desire to have God’s presence in the midst of the people God has placed before you (colleagues, co-workers, friends, business partners, family).
- How David Gave it to Them a. His generous gift to the building of the temple i. The amount was staggering ii. The motive behind the amount was staggering grace of God in David’s life b. Seeing David’s heart respond to the grace of God, the leaders and people were moved i. Their hearts was change ii. The power of money was broken in their lives iii. They experience God’s grace, through David’s generosity! iv. They were able to have God’s presence deeply in their heart.
Prayer Point: A lot of us, our giving is out of force, compulsion, obligation. Mostly because we haven’t had the power of money broken in our lives. We need to pray that the power of money is broken in our lives so that we are able in our hearts to watch out for the sins of greed, materialism, and need of possession.
- How we can have it even more a. Jesus i. God accomplished this by willingly sacrificing his infinite treasure, His Son. And the Father’s motive was because of love! b. If the sacrificial generosity of David moved the people into life changing heartfelt generosity and grace, what should the infinite sacrifice of our Great King, Jesus, do for us?

How have you prayed for your Salt? I want us to look at when Paul is passionately praying for his church, and notice how He is praying. 2. He prays that they would know the riches of what they already have in Christ Context: 1. Paul never prays about the church’s circumstances 2. He almost always pray that they might know the richest of what they have in Jesus Prayer Point: Maybe it’s time that we pray differently for the people we are leading. Prayer Point: Maybe some of you leaders, salt, ministry, teams, small group leaders, members of the church—should be praying for the change to happen in the life of those in your community that claim faith in the Lord Jesus. You should pray, Lord I love them, you love them, they proclaim faith in you…Lord let their lives grow in maturity in YOU. 2. Those who have Love for all the Saints a. Saint’s never mean super Christian in the bible b. The way you know you’re a Christian is that you have deep love for ALL the saints Prayer Point: Maybe some of you guys need to pray for your heart, when it comes to the brothers and sister here at our church. We are called to LOVE ALL the Saints! We need to look deep and ask ourselves, if I love Jesus, am I really loving the Saints here, or am I merely tolerating them. What are the riches that are deposited for you? Vs 17-19 1. Hope of His calling 2. Riches of His Glorious Inheritance 3. Incomparable power of God How do you draw upon these riches? Vs 17-18 1. Pray Paul’s prayer for yourself a. That you will have the revelation of this reality everyday! 2. Meditate on these truths a. Meditate on the question, “how will I act different, how will I be different if I know these things to the depths of my soul?” b. Write down 20-30 things 3. Think of Jesus Christ Praying this prayer twice a. Jesus prays (c.f. John 15), “I want You to call them a people for Yourself, to envelop them in your power, to make them your great inheritance and treasure. b. Therefore, reject me, cast me away as worthless, and break me with your power

We will dive into the area of prayer for our family, through Hannah’s prayer a. Understanding Hannah’s Pain b. Seeing the Change in Her Heart Understanding Hannah’s Pain vs 4-8 1. Hannah’s Pain came from her oppressive culture a. Having Children was a matter of life and death b. Therefore, the pressure on a woman to conceive was enormous c. We still live in an oppressive culture i. Maybe it’s not as family oppressive as it once was, but it’s more individualistically oppressive. 2. The only way to escape the cultural idol system of your particular culture is by having God more important to your heart. Prayer Point: 1. Some of us need to be hearing from God at this moment. For a lot of us comes from collective family culture that puts unbelievable amount of pressure on us. Maybe instead of hating and unforgiving we should be empathetic and forgiving—knowing that they are a product of their culture. 2. Some of us needs to start hearing from God on whether our attitudes and actions towards our family is just another response to a new individualistic culture that’s driving and oppressing us now. Seeing the Change in Her heart vs 9-11 1. Hannah Stood Up a. The word carries with it the connotation, “to take action” b. She wasn’t going to be passive anymore—she rejected what her culture was giving her and turned to the one above the culture. Prayer Point 1. Some of us need to start getting into the rhythm of seeing some of these cultural traps in our home. We need to start hearing what God is saying and start standing up and take some actions in response to God! Hannah’s Prayer 1. Begins by remembering God’s sovereignty and majesty. She’s remembering the goodness of God. 2. Her heart changes 3. She offers her child to the service of the Lord a. The focus of this child was not for her identity but rather for God’s mission. b. She made God’s heart the center of her reason for the child. Prayer Point 1. Maybe today God is telling some of you, your prayers for your family has been too me-centered! 2. Maybe your prayer for your family needs to be where God’s mission is the end goal. Conclusion 1. Jesus’ act of salvation was not a mirror of the forefathers (David, Samuel, Samson etc), it was a mirror of the fore-mothers (Sarah, Leah, Rahab, Ruth). 2. The women showed that Jesus was not just coming King but suffering servant! a. If we are willing to step into suffering for the name and mission of Christ, we have in Jesus the promise of Salvation to a lot of people!
