Mile Hi Church Sunday talks posted weekly here! Mile Hi is a New Thought church in Lakewood, Colorado. Practical and universal spirituality, affirmative prayer, meditation and oneness are at the heart of all we do. Our community focuses on healing, growth, empowerment, positive living, mindfulness and a grounded spiritual path as well as overcoming anxiety, focusing on forgiveness and fostering healthy relationships.
Greg McKeown said that if you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will. It is one thing when this is some critic calling for our attention or some authority figure who doesn’t respect us. It’s tricky when this is the people we love and the work we care most about. There is so much that “should” come first, but if we aren’t careful, we may lose ourselves in the trying. Hence our message today, that in order for who is most important to come first, they must come second.

Pathways in the Garden of the Tree of Life
with Zemirah
Sun., Aug. 2
Watering, Weeding, and the Discipline of Tending
How to stay rooted in calm connectedness in the midst of chaos is a practice. What does it mean to tend our inner life the way a gardener tends sacred ground? Which parts of you are thirsting for living water? Which patterns, habits and inherited beliefs might be quietly choking what wants to bloom? What is the difference between the shadowed expression of your gifts and the luminous offering your soul came here to make? Find Paradise in plain sight through ancient practices and teachings of the Kabbalah, I Ching, and Zen.
Based on Karen Maezen Miller's Paradise in Plain Sight: Lessons from a Zen Garden and teachings from the Kabbalah, this first talk: The Gate and the Ground, explores having faith in yourself as The Way, how all of life experiences are conspiring to bring us into a deeper awareness and experience of Spirit and looks at how the rocks of our life, our shadows, and our greatest challenges can support the expansion and sharing of our greatest gifts. Bringing teachings from Kabbalah, I Ching, and Zen together for inspiration.
Do you feel like “The Weight of the World” is on your shoulders? I’m reminded of the Talking Heads song “Once in a Lifetime,” where David Byrne croons, “Well, how did I get here?” It’s a good question. What is this “weight?” Are we really serving what is on our shoulders by heaving it around with us wherever we travel? What would happen if we just let it all go?
Think of your life as a tapestry. Which specific stories fill in the gaps and make you feel completely whole? If your memory feels a bit blank right now, don't worry. You can hunt for those missing, soul-stirring stories in many rich landscapes. We’ll begin the search together.
As we celebrate American’s 250 birthday, let’s return to some first principles. We speak of the American experiment at times as if we are lucky to have made it this far. Yet, early Americans understood some things perhaps more recent generations have forgotten. Take this idea of “The pursuit of happiness.” It didn’t mean “live your best life” in terms of having fun and accumulating wealth, but it meant a pursuit of ongoing learning, of embodying virtue, and endearing friendship, the kind that could withstand even the most fervent disagreements. These more than anything, are the foundation of a long-lasting democracy not only of country, but of spirit.

Look straight ahead, nothing but blue skies.

From Living For, To Living From Abundance
with Michelle Medrano
Eric Butterworth said, “Things may happen around you and things may happen to you, but the only things that matter are the things that happen in you.”
Life is abundant. Yet, our lives are only as abundant in our experience as our consciousness to receive them. The key is not about how much we can take in, it’s about our capacity to cultivate an awareness of the abundance of life within us and to live from and for it.
In this episode, our lead ministers, Michelle Medrano and Josh Reeves discuss political anxiety in 2024.
Ernest Holmes, founder of Religious Science, tells of a man who is incredibly thirsty, drinks a glass of water, and then carries on about how thirsty he was. The point being, too many of us have so learned to be thirsty that we must learn to be fulfilled and satisfied.
An important rite of spiritual living is when we acknowledge past disappointments and hurts and no longer choose to have our identity defined by them. There is a greater story of our life yet-to-be told. We all have the potential to live thriving lives, but it’s up to us to choose to realize that potential.
As we learn to live thriving lives, the thriving takes care of itself.

There may not be a greater keeper of a grand truth than a good story. No matter how long the game of telephone or how one part of a story may be overly emphasized, there can be an original truth a story always retains. This is what Jesus believed and shared, knowing so much of his teachings would be distorted. We dig deep into the stories Jesus told to find meaning for living in heaven on Earth today.

The Heart Is What It Wants

Music: Featuring guest artist, Gary Lynn Floyd
In this episode, our lead ministers, Michelle Medrano and Josh Reeves check in with each other and discuss their daily spiritual practices.
It is one thing to say you believe in love, honesty, or oneness, but do you really know what these virtues mean? Explore the teachings of the great philosopher, Socrates, who implored that the unexamined life is not worth living. When we know ourselves, we come to understand the virtues that make us feel most alive.
Life can often seem complex and challenging. Yet, there are guiding principles that can help each of us stay on track and make the most of our unique journey.
At the heart of our teaching is that a Divine Perfection resides in everything. What about when that Divine Perfection seems not only absent but nonexistent in the face of challenges we see or endure?
We talk a lot about the power of giving love and being loving, yet the benefits of being a willing receiver of love are tremendous. Can you receive and feel love and support from other people? Can you receive and feel the love of God? Let’s uplevel our love receivership!
We live in a critical and, oftentimes, violent world. People are afraid to talk about their feelings, thoughts, or beliefs and withhold energy for fear of being ridiculed, punished, or excluded. We resort to hiding our deepest dreams and desires away and cover them up with doubt, insecurity, old experiences, and fears. We have forgotten that within ourselves is a powerful, creative voice that wants to emerge and make a difference on this planet.
One of the greatest benefits of spiritual practice is the experience of stillness.
This experience can be described as a feeling of at-one-ment, of being fully present or experiencing an extra layer of awareness grounded in peace. We don’t have to be absolutely still to get to the heart of stillness. All that is required is reverence for whatever is in this moment and an ability to forget everything else.
We often think of forgiveness as a grand act in response to a great offense; certainly, this is an important aspect of forgiveness. Yet, forgiveness is also an everyday tool for even the slightest of slights. When we don’t practice everyday forgiveness, those slights and nicks may not seem to affect us at the moment, but they can add up which leads to a sense of victimhood, burnout, and resentment.
There are notions about meditation that are simply not true—there must be absolute silence and no distractions; it must take a long time; your mind races too fast to accomplish its purpose; it’s hard to do. Meditation is the ability to appreciate what is in the present moment. When we do this, it anchors us in the now rather than reverting back to old perceptions of what has been. It opens us up to what really is and can be.
Affirmative prayer is the key tool of the Science of Mind practitioner. It is by affirmative prayer that we acknowledge our relationship with a higher power, and with that knowledge, look at our lives and affirm what that means. This contributes to the health of our bodies, relationships, self-image, and vision. Affirmative prayer is a means to manifest, see clearly, and live authentically.
Perhaps the greatest promise of Science of Mind is not only in the existence of a higher power but by also improving our relationship with this Power, we can change our lives for the better. This Power is present and willing if we are present to it, ready for renewal.
Beyond the many plans and goals of our worldly lives, we are all called to a pilgrimage. It is the pathway to the Sacred and to all that is represented by the Christmas manger. Embrace this great journey and actualize ever-greater dimensions of our spiritual birthright.
These words are uttered by distraught George Bailey in the movie as he experiences a crisis. How do we open ourselves more fully in balanced times or crises to feel Divine guidance?

Thanksgiving is focused on a singular spiritual practice—gratitude—one of the greatest spiritual practices because it can transform consciousness. But it can also be misunderstood, with many levels of how to give thanks and some are more creative and inspiring than others.
Do you take things for granted? Or do you take them with gratitude and grace? Learn how to shift your perspective on life's challenges and see a deeper meaning to enhance your spiritual growth.

The stars are always out but the glare of our everyday world obscures our sight to see them. Still, true vision isn’t just sight. It’s the deep knowing and remembering that the stars are still there. Your inner constellation of truth is always right there to help you make the connection and lead with light.
In this episode, our lead ministers, Michelle Medrano and Josh Reeves check in with each other and discuss the midterm elections.
We all share the same space, but what makes up your constellation of inner light may be different from mine. Regardless, we shine! Like stars in the sky, we don’t need another star to dim its light to shine our own. Nor do we need to hide our light in order for others to reach their potential. There is enough room for all of us and the best way to help other stars is to shine.
We are all one. None of us are the same. This Divine contradiction, on one hand, is the activity of a primordial principle. On the other hand, the Infinite can only express itself as unique. As an expression of the Infinite, are you willing to embody your total uniqueness, in honor of the One?
Barry Ebert and special guests, Steven and Matthew Fisher talk about healing family relationships and addiction support. This year, our programming at Mile Hi Church emphasizes health and well-being. Learn more here: https://www.milehichurch.org/initiative/
The idea of being who you are meant to be may at first inspire a feeling of destiny, yet, what it really means is what happens when we live in harmony with our inner constellation of truth. There is so much in life that can seem to inspire us to be “unnatural” instead of who we really are. Being who we are meant to be is simply knocking off being anything but.
An important part of leading with light is speaking your truth. This means not only cultivating your connection with your inner constellation but also learning to have faith in your own voice. In each moment, you either know what to say or are powerful enough to admit that you don’t know what to say. Yet, you can powerfully speak from what resonates within you.
Throughout our life journey, we are called to let go of the lesser we might discover and embody the greater—within life and within ourselves. On the 21st anniversary of 911 and the attack on the World Trade Center, we come together in the name of peace on Earth to explore and embody how the principles of our teachings can help us contribute to greater peace that can be a healing balm for humanity.
There is great courage in moving from chaos, anger, disappointment, pain, and violence to peace; it is not a passive effort. As each one of us embodies courage and attains greater inner peace, we benefit our own living and the living of others in our personal circle and everywhere.
We can have some misconceptions about what it means to struggle especially the idea when one struggles, it means there is something wrong. Could struggle also mean there is something good taking place? Could it be a sign of growth, a symbol of commitment, or an alarm reminding you that you are right where you should be? If we can stop struggling down and learn to struggle up, we can rise to new levels of richer living and contentment.

Right where we are, we are in the midst of God. As such, Divine revelation and insight are always available. Truth is all around us, and we find it in many forms. As long as we remain open, we become both the messenger and the message.

Heartbreak and heavy-heartedness can impact our experience of healthy living. Our teachings can support us, powerfully strengthening the profound heartbeat of the Divine in and as us. What Jesus taught was the way of the Spirit. There is wisdom when we step back from the great stories about Jesus and move into the heart of what he taught. To practice the way of the Spirit is to have the secret to true life.
History is not only a likely story about the past. It is the method by which we continue to learn and reveal how we got to where we are and when properly understood, gives us wisdom for where we are going. From our founding fathers to working mothers, civil servants to civil rights activists, natives whose ancestors lived on this land for generations to newly arriving immigrants—how we view our country may be very different based on our own points of view. But there is also a story of our wholeness, born in our inception, strained through racism and injustice, strengthened through sacrifice and bravery, and practiced in the daily lives of so many everyday Americans. America needs constant scrutiny but it also requires a “whole story” to realize the prayer at the heart of our union for liberty, peace, and justice for all.
In this bonus episode, our lead ministers, Michelle Medrano and Josh Reeves discuss church, life, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
As we find ourselves between the national holidays of Juneteenth and Independence Day, it is wise for us to consider not only our shared history as Americans but our shared responsibility to preserve and protect our precious freedom.
Freedom is the promise of the Divine embedded in the heart of everyone. To listen to this promise and follow it is to seek to bring freedom for your mind, for your choices, for people around you, and ultimately for the generations that follow you.
Our lead ministers share their personal and spiritual secrets and best practices for embracing and being embraced by the Infinite flow.
When we feel out of the flow, we feel stuck, flustered, and sometimes even scared. We seem to push up against everything until we can begin to allow ourselves to let go and into the Divine flow of our true nature once again.
It is one thing to begin to believe there is an Infinite flow; it is another thing to learn to trust it. Trusting the flow builds, attracts, and expands its effectiveness in our life. Trusting the flow allows us to experience it!

The fearful ego would have us hide out, hold back, and keep our hearts closeted and safe. Christmas is a time to reassess what really matters in life and to rededicate ourselves sharing the best within us.
The holiday season, more so than any other time, brings the Spirit of the past, present, and what is yet to come, together. When we reject any of the lessons they teach, we can repeat many of the same mistakes. But when we embrace and fully realize their lessons, we have a real and true experience of eternity.

Sidetracked with Rev. Joshua Reeves - This is the third spiritual message in the Five-Week Sunday Series: Adventure in Faith 2019
Let the Adventure Begin!
Get lost. Seriously! Take a detour. Take the long way. Slow down. There‘s no need to rush. If life is truly about the adventure and not the destination, then a happy ending is only the byproduct of cultivating happiness along the way.
You can’t truly know where you’re going or where you’ve been without clearly understanding where you are. When you embrace the truth that you are here, balance, self-acceptance, and creativity is cultivated, which allows you to boldly move forward in your life adventure.
What does adventure suggest to you? Someplace different? Something exciting or unknown? Maybe even a little bit scary? Or could it be a place you’ve always longed to go, what you’ve always longed to do or who you’ve always longed to be? Maybe the real you on the true adventure of your soul?
Welcome to your adventure in faith!

Building his career from the streets, one passer-by at a time, Martin Kerr has been able to make a living as an independent musician for the last 10 years. Kerr is no stranger to taking his guitar, along with his busking amp, and setting up his CD store anywhere he could gather an audience. “To connect with people who left the house that morning not expecting to hear live music in the street, for a song to stop them in their tracks on their way get groceries or run to the bank, is a really special thing.” says Kerr. It has been these connections that have enabled him to build a fan base of loyal supporters who he refers to as more of a family.
