For our 200th episode, we're bringing in someone who lives and breathes the local music scene—Atlanta-based journalist, curator, and tastemaker Kapoorhouse. Known for their ear-to-the-ground coverage of rising talent and for curating the beloved Spotify playlist Atlanta Sound, Kapoorhouse has become a go-to source for discovering the best emerging artists in the city.
In this milestone episode, we dive deep into Atlanta’s thriving indie scene, shining a light on standout bands like Girlpuppy, Lunar Vacation, and Hotel Fiction. We talk about what makes the city’s sound so unique, how Kapoorhouse finds and uplifts under-the-radar talent, and the importance of community in keeping local music alive.
Whether you’re an Atlanta native or just indie-curious, this episode is a celebration of two things we love: great music and the people who champion it.
On this episode of On That Note, I’m joined by Atlanta-based artist and producer Mad Ace..., a sonic architect known for his experimental approach to synths and genre-bending production. With deep roots in the indie scene through his work with Athens-turned-Atlanta rock outfit Wieuca, Mad Ace... has spent years crafting sounds that toe the line between chaos and cohesion.
He’s gearing up for the release of his new album Heartcrymes, dropping June 28th—a deeply personal yet playfully glitched-out project that blends emotional storytelling with warped electronic textures. His newest single “Big Star” is out now, complete with an accompanying music video that dives headfirst into his offbeat visual world.
We get into all of that and more—his production roots, evolution as a songwriter, and how the Atlanta DIY scene continues to shape his creative voice.
On this episode of On That Note, I sat down with Athens-based singer-songwriter Lane Marie, fresh off the release of her stunning new single, Changing. With plans to release a steady stream of songs throughout the year, James is carving out his own sound with honesty and ambition.
We dive into the making of "Icarus," his creative process, what inspires his songwriting, and how living under the same roof leads to some very spontaneous jam sessions. It’s always a good time chatting with this guy, so tune in for a fun and insightful conversation about launching your musical journey from the ground up.
Don't forget to like and subscribe, and as always... On That Note, I'll see you guys next time. 🎙️
In this episode, I sit down with Atlanta-based pop singer, songwriter, and producer Levi Ransom for an intimate and wide-ranging conversation. We dive into his artistic process, the production techniques behind his signature sound, and the musical inspirations that have shaped his work. Levi opens up about his journey with mental health and sobriety, sharing honest reflections that are as powerful as his music. We also talk about the recent release of the deluxe edition of his album Loverboy, which features three brand-new tracks that expand on the emotional and sonic themes of the original project.
Atlanta-based indie folk-pop artist Ben Strawn is carving out a sound that’s warm, textured, and emotionally resonant. With heartfelt lyricism, layered arrangements, and a steady evolution as a performer and producer, Ben is quickly becoming a name to watch in the Southeast indie scene.
His latest single, “Memories,” marks a stunning leap forward—an immersive, almost cinematic track that weaves lush soundscapes with saxophone, clarinet, and other woodwinds, giving the song a dreamlike quality. It’s a moment of reflection that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant, showing off Ben’s talent for translating feeling into sound.
Beyond the studio, Ben’s been diving headfirst into the often chaotic world of independent touring—figuring it out one step, one city, one house show at a time. From booking his own gigs to building connections across the DIY circuit, his journey has been anything but polished—and that’s what makes it compelling. He’s learning how to take these songs on the road, and in doing so, is discovering what it means to build something real, face to face, show by show.
Zach Butler is an indie rock and alt-country singer-songwriter and producer based in Macon, Georgia. A returning guest of the pod, Zach just released his self-produced album All Shall Be Well, a poignant and richly layered collection that blends southern storytelling with experimental textures. On this episode, we talk about the making of the new record, how his production approach has evolved, and what it's like creating honest art in a small-town scene.
I sat down with folk-pop singer-songwriter NJ, just ahead of the release of her debut album Different Girl, dropping April 11. With a voice that blends the emotional clarity of Lizzy McAlpine, the introspective charm of ROLE MODEL, and the pop polish of Ariana Grande, NJ is carving out her own unique lane in the alt-pop world and local Atlanta music scene.
We chatted about the creative journey behind Different Girl and her close collaboration with producer Aaron Rizzo, whose textured production helped bring NJ’s heartfelt songwriting to life. All good things must come to an end.
As we wrap up our work here in Historic New Jersey, I cant help but feel grateful for how far along these songs have come. These tunes were mere seeds five days ago.
This morning has been pretty chill. All we did was add percussion and backup vocals to a few songs. After recording this recap, a friend of Joe's, Yesseh came in to lay down a rad saxophone solo.
We also made a rough mix of each of the songs so that we could listen here and there over the next few days.
This has been a truly wonderful experience and I have to thank Kevin, Emily, Johnny and Joe for really lending a hand throughout this process.
OTN artist interviews will continue as normal starting next week!
Thank you all for listening to this mini series and I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have :)
Day 4 has come to a close and these songs are sounding better than ever.
As Kevin predicted in episode 1, each of these songs have really come to life within the last 24 hours.
Today, we started by adding acoustic and electric guitar tracks to two songs. We also tracked some keyboard layers and even threw a mandolin into the mix!
Today, all the pressure was on me when we put down some lead vocal tracks. Historically, this is my least favorite part of the creation process, but after watching a Bob Dylan documentary with Kevin a few days ago, I came out with a new perspective on what makes a good lead vocal line.
You don't have to necessarily be an incredible singer to create incredible songs! Performance is just as important (if not more) than pitch!
I also have to give a big shout out to Kevin's roommate, Emily Morales (Star Moles) for giving an incredible vocal performance on back up vox for my song, The Good Things, Too.
As day 4 comes to a close, I'm feeling great about where the EP is at this point. But I'm also sad that this process is coming to a close. I've learned so much over these last few days that I'll take with me along my musical journey.
Tune in tomorrow for one last installment of the Philly EP series :)
Today, everything really started coming together.
Just like Kevin mentioned on the first recap, the songs really start to show them selves around day 3 or 4. And these tunes have clearly found a life of their own.
We started this morning by adding drums, bass, and a lead guitar melody to the most recent addition to the EP. Then Kevin's friend Joe came into the studio to add some sweet trumpet layers.
As it turns out, Joe is currently in a band I've enjoyed since senior year of high school! They're a prog-rock fusion group called Thank You, Scientist and I actually saw them in Atlanta in 2015. Small world!
We're really stoked for tomorrow because that's when we add all the fun little details like percussion, synths, and lead vocals!
Thanks for tuning into our day 3 recap :)

Day 2 of recording is almost done!
We took a moment in between tracking bass to let you all know how the process has been going so far.
We had Kevin's friend Johnny come over to help assist with working the tape machine while we recorded drums.
Today provided a great learning experience in communication with Kevin and I talking through what we wanted the drums to sound like for each song.
Johnny really came through with a great idea to slightly alter another demo I had coming into this session so that it would fit better with the three songs we picked yesterday. So now we have 4 total songs that will be on the EP!
Tomorrow, Kevin's friend Joe will come over to lay down some sweet trumpet melodies. I've always wanted trumpet in my music!
Thanks for tuning in and we'll give you all another update tomorrow :)

Today was our first day starting work on my new EP!
I came to Philadelphia with a good handful of demos to sift through. This morning we landed on three that really felt they would gel together.
From here, we put down some scratch guitar and vocal takes for reference. These takes will most likely not make the final cut because we're going to go back and record them for real tomorrow after laying down the drums and bass!
