This episode’s wonderful and brilliant guest is Dr. Norma Kenyon from the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami Florida and today’s topic is one that every parent of a child living with type 1 diabetes wants to know more about… What is being done to find a cure for type one and how close are we? This was a rather emotional one for me to record because this is the heart of it, isn’t it? This is what my daughter has clung to ever since diagnosis day when that well-meaning nurse told her that a cure is right around the corner. I am so excited for you to hear Dr. Kenyon explain what I am going to call the scientifically miraculous things that have been taking place in her lab and in the clinical trials to find a biological cure for type one diabetes. Enjoy the show and PLEASE check out the links below to learn more about the DRI and how you can support the DRI Foundation. Let me tall you, if my money is going anywhere it's going here!

There's a new love in my life and his name is Bob. Happy Bob, that is! Have you heard of the Happy Bob App? In today's episode you'll hear from the app's creator and a fellow type one parent, Jutta. For the sake of her son, she made it her mission to make diabetes management more enjoyable for both the T1D and their caregivers.
In all honesty, I was pretty hesitant to download the Happy Bob App at first...
I just could stand the thought of having one more app or program beeping at me and notifying me of my daughter's blood sugar level. HOWEVER, I AM SO VERY GLAD I DID! I can genuinely say that the Happy Bob App has done nothing but HELP when it comes to diabetes management. It makes me laugh and smile even on the tough and frustrating days. Plus, it makes me feel good about all the hard work I'm putting into diabetes management. I could go on and on about what I love about it but, really, you just need to take a listen to this episode and download the app to see for yourself. Enjoy!

You asked so I answered! So many listeners wanted to know how our experience on Omnipod 5 has been going so I thought it would be nice to put it in one spot. I talk about why we made the switch, important things to keep in mind, dealing with insurance, what has worked for us in terms of settings, the pros and cons, and how I adjust settings when we are seeing highs or lows. I think it's a pretty thorough overview. Always keep in mind, I am not a doctor or a diabetes educator... just a mom with a daughter living with type 1 who hopes to help and empower other moms. Nothing you hear on this episode should be considered medical advice... I am just sharing our experience with you all. Enjoy and let me know what you think! What has your experience with the OP5 been so far?

Who's ready to think like a pancreas?! This is the sixth episode in our 10 week, Think Like a Pancreas Book Club Series and today I am covering chapter SIX called, Basal Insulin dosing. My guest for this one is my good friend and T1D mama, Shannan. This chapter gives great, step by step instructions on how to do basal testing whether you are on MDI or an insulin pump. Getting those basal settings correct is so very important and definitely the first step you should nail down when building a solid foundation for better, more stable diabetes management.
Listen, if you have type 1 diabetes or your kid has type 1 diabetes or someone you love has diabetes or perhaps you have type 2 diabetes and are taking insulin, I can confidently say you need to own a copy of this book and actually read it. While preparing for the upcoming Think Like a Pancreas Book Club series that launches this summer (June 2022), I read a lot about medications (other than insulin) that are often used to manage blood sugars in both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. I noticed that most of them were meant for type 2 diabetics and all but one were only approved for use in people over the age of 18. The one exception was Metformin which is approved for use in children ages 10 and up. That got me wondering, are there any pediatric type 1 diabetics who have been prescribed metformin?? If so, why? And how is it working for them? Eventually I found today's guest, Amelia, whose 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) at the age of 8 and Type 1 diabetes at the age of 10. Just a few months ago she was prescribed Metformin due to significant insulin resistance and was placed on a Tandem pump. Listen in as Amelia explains all about their type 1 journey and how managing diabetes is now compared to even just a month or two ago. It's pretty fascinating! Enjoy!

Today's topic, is not one that is talked about often but one that I and my my guest, Brooke Giordano, think is very important to acknowledge. Trauma and grief are words often associated with horrific events, major accidents or the loss of a loved one. I would argue to say that receiving a type 1 diagnosis is a traumatic event, one that may people grieve in cycles throughout the course of their life. Brooke Giordano is a marriage and family therapist and a fellow type 1 mom whose daughter, Amelia, was diagnosed around the same time and at the same age as my daughter, Sarah. Today, Rachel Halverson (RN, CDCES), and I are talking about drinking, diabetes and the effect that alcohol has on blood sugar. Why is this HERE as part of the teen series, you may be wondering?? I think it's very important to have a calm discussion with your older teen about how alcohol effects the liver and what that can do to blood sugar levels in the body of a T1D. My hope is that they will use that information to make smart decisions that will keep them safe while out with friends. Quite honestly, I think we are kidding ourselves if we think our teen is never going to drink before they are legally allowed to do so. This episode is full of great and, in my opinion, fascinating, information.

Episode 54 features Rachel Halverson, CDCES. If you remember, Rachel is the trooper that joined me for ALL 10 weeks of the newly diagnosed series. Today, Rachel and I discuss a general overview of insulin needs in teenagers with Type 1 Diabetes. Rachel has been living with T1D for the past 25 years and has been a volunteer camp counselor at Camp Kudzu in Georgia for years working with teens of all ages. This episode describes what is going on physiologically in a teens body throughout puberty and how that may be reflected in the insulin needs and blood sugars. WARNING: This episode does cover what may be considered as more young adult and adult topics such as the menstrual cycle in case you have little ears listening and want to avoid an onslaught of potentially awkward questions on the way to school.

The holidays are literally right around the corner! This episode highlights some good gift and stocking stuffer ideas for you child living with type 1 diabetes.
I certainly don't advocate getting them ONLY gifts surrounding type 1. Heavens no! They get enough of that in their every day life. But maybe pick one or two to breath a little life into their type 1 diabetes management. These are just a few ideas to make life with T1D prettier, more awesome, more manageable and possibly a little easier.
Don't celebrate the holidays? No worries! These gifts can be given all year round for birthdays, diaversaries or "just because you're an awesome warrior" presents. Enjoy! I am working on getting a blog post up with links to all these goodies!

Episode 48 of The Sugar Mama's Podcast features Dr. Matthew Webber, an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Notre Dame. He is currently in charge of a team that is studying, among other things, stimuli responsive glucagon.
This emergency glucagon or "smart glucagon" as I like to call it is a gel based technology that is injected into the body. It is able to sense when blood sugar levels are dropping to a dangerously low range and release glucagon in response to that. In other words, it has the ability to raise blood sugar levels automatically to treat lows in insulin dependent patients such as those living with type 1 diabetes.
Research like this is amazing to me and I can't wait for you to hear all about. When your done, if you want to know more about what Dr. Webber and his team are doing in their research lab, you can check them out on the Webber Lab website.

I am, and have always been, one of those people who goes around singing songs that match whatever circumstance I find myself in. Sometimes the lyrics are already perfect for the situation at hand and sometimes I change them a little bit to make a parody. When my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, naturally this "habit" of mine came right alongside me as we bolused for meals, changed devices, and dealt with the highs and lows that are just inevitable with being insulin dependent. Thus, Type 1 Diabetes THE MUSICAL was born and today I want to share it with you, listeners of The Sugar Mama's Podcast!
In this episode, I sing my way (yes, you get to hear me sing) through each and every one of these songs. Type 1 Diabetes the Musical has 9 categories or scenes that I organized the nearly 40 songs into. Below you will find a written list of these categories and songs as well as a link to the Spotify Playlist where you can listen to all of these songs in ordered or shuffled. Enjoy!

The Glycemic Index (GI). What is it? Why do we need to know about it in the world of Type 1 Diabetes Management?
In short, the Glycemic Index is a scale from 1 to 100 that tells you how fast and how hard a food will effect blood sugar levels. Scores at or near 100 will be converted to glucose almost immediately.
Andi Balog, a personal trainer and T1D nutritionist joins me on today's episode to discuss the GI index, her own journey as a Type 1 Diabetic and her passion for helping women with T1D lose weight.
Personally, I like to know the GI of foods to help me determine how I am going to bolus for certain foods and meals. It helps me decide how long the prebolus should be, do I need to split the dose or extend the bolus? Do I need to make any temp basal changes to cover the meal properly? The GI index is another tool I use to help me manage my daughter's Type 1 and use the insulin to the best of my knowledge. Enjoy the episode and see below for links mentioned in the show and where you can find Andi.

Disney's DAS Pass "assists Guests who have difficulty tolerating extended waits in a conventional queue environment due to disability." (Taken from the Disney's website).
The Legoland HERO Passis also for those who may have difficulty waiting in line.
The guest on today's episode is Robbie, a fellow T1D mom with a passion for helping other Type 1 families. Check out her awesome and education T1D Instagram profile HERE... @t1dlearnwithme. Do you or your child have Type 1 Diabetes? Are you wondering if other members of your family, adults or children, may be at risk for developing T1D? Is there a way to screen for that? If they are at risk, is there anything that can be done to delay or prevent the onset of Type 1? These are all fabulous questions and the answers to all of them are discussed in today's episode.
In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Frank Martin, Director of Research at JDRF, about their T1Detect program. We also get to hear all about TrialNet from Dr. Michael Haller, professor and Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Florida (UF) as well as the principal investigator of the UF TrialNet Clinical Center. See below for descriptions of both with links to their websites to find out more and order your own at-home screening kit.
What is T1Detect?T1Detect, JDRF’s screening education and awareness program, will arm you with the information you need before and after getting screened for type 1 diabetes (T1D) autoantibodies. Until now, T1D symptoms and a diagnosis often come out of the blue. Today, families can use testing to detect T1D early so they can plan and prepare. With one blood test, anyone at any age can find out—before symptoms even occur—if they are at risk for developing T1D. The test is easy, simple and can help save lives. Their website: https://www.jdrf.org/t1d-resources/t1detect/ What is TrialNet?TrialNet is an international network of leading academic institutions, endocrinologists, physicians, scientists and healthcare teams at the forefront of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. We offer risk screening for relatives of people with T1D and innovative clinical studies testing ways to slow down and prevent disease progression. Our goal: a future without T1D!

Sarah is also the mom, to Charlie, a now teenager who has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for a good while. Charlie suffers from what the medical community has recently termed MARSI, or Medical Adhesive-Related Skin Injury and his poor skin was being ripped off with the removal of each CGM patch and pump part! This trauma led Sarah and her husband to start experimenting to find an all-natural adhesive remover that worked and would save their son's skin. Enter, Mirabalm! Enjoy this episode! In this episode I have the pleasure of chatting with Janelle Haas, volunteer 504 plan advocate who frequently fields 504 questions from JDRF and families needing help establishing a 504 plan. What is a 504 plan?? Great question! It can be so confusing and overwhelming, especially when dealing with the already overwhelming Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. Basically, a 504 plan is a legally binding document that all T1D students in grades KG to 12 need to ensure they are safe and treated fairly while at school. Janelle and I talk all about what it entails and things you need to consider when drafting your child's. (scroll down for the email I wrote to my school)

Ouch! Shots are painful! Especially for little kids, most of whom are scared of shots to begin with. In this episode I get to speak with Rebecca who is mom to a 6 year-old girl named Ava. Ava wears a pretty cool gadget called the Medtronic i-Port Advance which takes the pain out of multiple daily injections, giving Ava more flexibility and confidence when it comes to her diabetes management. The i-Port is inserted right on the skin with a small cannula in the subcutaneous tissue and allows users to only have to endure one, small poke once every three days. The insulin gets injected in the port each time and not the skin. Listen in to find out even MORE benefits of the Medtronic i-Port Advance! Enjoy the show!

Plus, you guys get to listen in on a rollicking game of Would You Rather! The second half of the episode, I go more in depth about what it has been like to switch from MDI to using an insulin pump. I talk about the pros and cons to both MDI and Pumping, some of the pump features we like to use and my overall assessment.
