Cooking Up Courage Podcast has all of the necessary ingredients to feed your mind, body, and spirit with more than enough courageous ideas, stories, and information to launch you into all of the greatness you hunger for in life! Our recipes for courage will inspire you, motivate you, and satisfy you when you need it most! We are so happy you have joined us at our table!
Note: I had some technical audio issues, but I'm giving myself grace and publishing this anyway. -> So often we beat ourselves up for not doing all of the things we wanted to do when we wanted to do them. But, honestly, we need to give ourselves grace for not doing these things because we were likely not doing them because we were either enjoying life, taking care of priorities, or focusing on something more important. We need to learn to graciously give ourselves grace when we miss the mark, drop the ball, or allow something to slide off the plate. It's okay to rearrange and re-prioritize things without feeling guilt, shame, or blame. Lean into what you DID accomplish and give yourself some grace for what didn't happen.

Many of us feel stuck in some particular place in our life. Often times we'll just choose to stay stuck because it's "easy". We often take the "easy" way out because it's sadly comfortable there. We don't move. We don't rock the boat. We don't grow or change because we're "comfortable" in our chaos. But...what we are really doing is making others comfortable while we continue to feel unhappy, unfulfilled, and miserable. What if we decided to rock the boat instead? What if we decided to leave that job that makes us feel inadequate and stressed out? What if we decided to leave that relationship that makes us question our worth and leaves us feeling empty? It might be uncomfortable at first to make these changes...but taking the easy way out at the expense of our own well-being is ultimately the most uncomfortable thing we can do to ourselves. Sit with your "easy way out" for a minute and decide what that is costing you. Then...decide to move past the "easy" and into the growth and fulfillment stage of life! You are worth it!

I caught myself recently feeling intimidated, insecure, and slamming myself and comparing myself to my friends. Why do we compare and criticize ourselves in such negative ways all the time? We need to learn to love ourselves, celebrate our uniqueness, and talk to ourselves in a positive way on a regular basis to build up our self-esteem and our confidence so we can have better relationships, better interactions, and better lives in general.
Watch what you say to yourself. Be kinder and more compassionate to your beautiful self!

Why do we judge people based on when they were born or under what circumstances they were born. Give people grace based upon who they present themselves to be regardless of their generation, birth circumstances, or whatever. Learn to give Generational Grace.
Listen to today's episode to find out what forgiveness is and what it is not.
Forgiveness doesn't excuse.
It doesn't justify.
It doesn't have to reconcile, renew, or replenish.
It just releases.
It gives peace.
It allows boundaries and freedom.
"**You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” this is a quote attributed to motivational speaker Jim Rohn.

May I talk about Mental Health
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Unfortunately, the subject of mental health has always had a "stigma" attached to it. it makes people uncomfortable. There are so many unknowns.
Mental Health issues can be situational, chemical, physiological, genetic, hormonal, temporary, or life-long.
Covid and recent social isolation have exacerbated mental conditions for so many people.
There are too many diagnoses and conditions for me to even attempt to address. Mental health is the leading cause of disability claims in the workplace these days.
Mental Illness affects millions just in the United States alone.
Mental Illness can take on many forms...some are obvious and some are not. Some are mild and some are severe. Many people hide behind a fake smile just to get through the moment, the day, the month, or the year. Many people deal with it in different ways. Honor each person's way of handling it without judgment. It's what they can do best at that moment in time. They may laugh, joke, cry, seek attention, isolate, vent, get angry, distract themselves, or do any number of different things to cope.
For those suffering from mental health issues, seeking help often takes courage, honesty, and vulnerability. If you notice something even slightly "off" with someone you interact with often, don't be afraid to ask them how they are. Be genuine. And be honest with the changes you've noticed...but most importantly...be ready and willing to listen to their responses. Nothing closes off a suffering person more than an apparent disingenuous conversation. Be sincere and non-judgemental. Ask how you can assist, but know that you're not the one to "fix" the issue. Be supportive without trying to rescue.
Let them know there's no shame in asking for help. There's no shame in seeking help. There's no shame in talking about it with others.
Mental health issues can lead to loss of sleep, alcohol or other substance abuse for numbing or self-medicating purposes, stress, anxiety, eating disorders, relationship friction, several physical implications, the loss of the will to live, and more.
Offer to help find resources for help.
911 or other local emergency number
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Treatment Referral Helpline, 1-877-SAMHSA7 (1-877-726-4727) to get general information on mental health and locate treatment services in your area.
Some other ways to help yourself when going through mental health issues:
Limit time watching the news or scrolling through social media. Get adequate sleep or rest. Get out in nature--ground yourself when possible (near water, trees, earth). Practice self-care. Listen to what you need. Eat nutritious foods. Move your body. Connect with others that bring you comfort. Avoid spending time with people that make you feel worse. Read, Watch your favorite movie. Listen to your favorite music. Pray. Meditate. Seek professional help.
Take good care of yourself and the people around you. We're all in this together.
Remember-It's okay to not be okay!

Friendships, relationships, or family connections are usually with us for either a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Look at your relationships with these things in mind to help you either learn lessons, endure changes, let go, or cherish forever with unconditional love.
Today's episode is inspired by the lyrics in the song by Frou Frou: Let Go, there can be beauty in the breakdown if you learn to let go. Mental breakdowns are rough, but allow yourself to break down, purge, feel, and then find the beauty in healing and learning from the breakdown. There's beauty in the breakdown if you look for it and allow it to exist.
Lyrics excerpt from Frou Frou: Let Go.
"(So let go) so let go
And jump in
Oh well whatcha waiting for
It's all right
'Cause there's beauty in the breakdown
(So let go) yeah let go
And just get in
Oh it's so amazing here
It's all right
'Cause there's beauty in the breakdown"

**Let’s face it. We all have muck in our lives that we’re not happy with. Whether it be a “mucky” job, a “mucky” boss, a mucky coworker, a mucky friend, a mucky relationship, a mucky financial situation, or a mucky family connection. We sit in our muck on a daily basis usually. We freaking hate it, yet we still sit in it because it’s...oddly...comfortable.
When we experience positive change whether we initiated it or not, why does it still hurt? Why do we miss the muck?**
**It really boils down to a disruption in our patterns and in our habits.
As I learned in this interview: How To Turn A BREAKDOWN Into An OPPORTUNITY with Mel Robbins & Lewis Howes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKs5IO9pp20, it's normal to miss the muck, but we need to ask ourselves some important questions to move past that. Check it out!

Discovery and exploration activities are so important in life. Allow yourself to try new things and to adjust and pivot when necessary. To pivot is not to fail, but instead to learn and grow! This episode is inspired by the sitcom Friends episode where Ross is trying to get an oversized couch up a stairway to his apartment, but despite his best efforts, help from friends, and his intricate sketched plans, it doesn't work. We need to embrace our failures as learning opportunities and realize that to PIVOT is to learn while we are growing. Visit my blog https://freethymeliving.com for more inspiration.

EPISODE 9: Celebrating failures.
Why do we focus so much on the negativity of our failures and the failures of others when we should actually be celebrating these failures?
I really don’t see failures in the way that most people do. I believe we all make many mistakes and errors along the way in our lifetime, but most of the time, we truly didn’t intend to screw up, and we shouldn’t be condemned as an ultimate failure just because we didn’t get it right.
Yes, I know...it’s hard to determine another person’s intent, but I truly believe that most of us are truly just doing the best that we can at any given moment.
So...when we personally screw up… we need to ask ourselves these questions. What was my intent? What am I willing to learn from this screw-up? Who do I need to apologize to? What will I do differently next time to avoid or improve this result?
I heard a personal development coach say it best recently, and I wish I could remember who said it. But, what he said stuck. YOU DON’T FAIL...YOU FIND! This really struck me, because all of life’s greatest discoveries were found because someone was okay with failing in order to find!
But, Thomas Edison said it best!
"I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work. "
Let's work on finding, instead of failing!
Let's learn to find, instead of fail.
If you know anything about Vinyl records, they are easily scratched and attract dust which can cause them to “skip” or “repeat” while you’re trying to play your favorite song. That signature skipping sound from the locked groove created the expression "broken record" and now refers to someone who continually repeats the same thing over and over again.
Many times we become just like broken records. We keep repeating the same patterns over and over and over again. We keep dating the same types of people that we don’t really align with. We attract the same crappy friendships that leave us feeling empty, hurt, or betrayed. We keep losing that same 5 to 10 lbs over and over again. We complain about our ass of a boss EVERY SINGLE DAY! We get up and dread going to our job day in and day out.
But...do we do anything about it? Generally, most of us don’t. We get into a pattern of perpetually complaining about our unfulfilling life situations like a broken record.

**Ooooh! I’m opening a can of worms today! But, why not? It’s almost Valentine’s day so love is in the air! It’s in the flirty glances of new love... it’s in the hearts of all of those connected soulmates out there... it’s in the greeting card aisle, in the floral department, in the candy aisle, and more. But, let’s be real...It’s also on the minds of many who are feeling alone, broken, unfulfilled, cynical, and bitter.
Fulfilling relationships take more than just time...they take courage! Let's explore!**
Happy Valentine’s Day to all who celebrate! I wish everyone a safe, courageous, happy, fulfilling, and healthy relationship!

Finding CLARITY will require some time to ponder some key questions in these areas of life...

SOCIAL CIRCLE (all relationships/connections)
SKILLS (what's needed for your dreams)
SATISFACTION OF SERVICE (providing service to others that you're proud of)
