Trauma Survivors Unite: Christian Emotional Recovery: Recent Episodes

Rachel Leroy

Hi there! Welcome to Christian Emotional Recovery, a podcast for survivors of childhood trauma, childhood emotional neglect, childhood narcissistic abuse, and any form of trauma. Many of us spend years trying to heal, and don't get anywhere. We don't always target the trauma itself, which is so often what keeps us stuck. The nature of trauma is that it literally becomes lodged in our brains and bodies. Trauma must be targeted where it's at, deep in our bodies and minds. This podcast is where faith meets science. I’m Rachel Leroy, a college professor and trauma survivor. I’m an emotional recovery expert with twenty years of experience applying healing modalities that helped me start making progress after nothing else worked. I'll show you how to do the same. We use traditional methods for drawing close to Christ, but we also use strategies and modalities such as meditation, EFT, and body work. Each week we'll cover a topic that will show you how to heal trauma for good. I'll teach you to access the deeper parts of your mind where the key to healing resides through specific and concrete strategies that will help you get into those deeper places in the mind--the places where you'll find the healing you've always sought and never gotten. God does heal, but not always in the ways we expect. Recovery takes time. This podcast is for people who are serious about healing and are willing to do the hard, difficult work to heal. Healing ain't for the faint-hearted! This groups offers actionable strategies that target the nature and root of trauma and get actual results. Description
In this episode, “The Art of Being Gentle With Yourself,” we explore what it means to practice self-compassion in a world that constantly pushes perfection. Together, we’ll look at the definition of self-compassion, how it connects with gentleness, and why gentleness—as a fruit of the Spirit—is something Christians often overlook when it comes to themselves. We’ll talk about how gentleness can play a powerful role in healing trauma, especially since trauma can feel like the opposite of compassion and softness. I’ll share some personal examples of how I’ve learned to slow down, give myself grace, and be gentler in my own healing journey—physically, mentally, and spiritually. Finally, we’ll consider how practicing gentleness toward ourselves can help us extend true compassion and kindness to others.

Description:

In this week’s episode, we’re talking about what resilience really is—especially for those of you who feel like healing is slow, messy, or impossible. If you’ve ever wondered why you still feel stuck, or doubted whether you’re making progress, this conversation is for you. Resilience isn’t about pushing through or being endlessly strong—it’s about slowly coming back to safety, connection, and self after pain. We’ll explore how real resilience works in the body, mind, and spirit, why it doesn’t always look impressive on the outside, and how both grace and grit are part of your healing—and why you’re likely already more resilient than you think.

DescriptionDo you ever feel like there’s a specific area of your life where you struggle no matter what you do? I spent years doing all the “right” things—vision boards, affirmations, money mindset work, deep dives into my blocks, all in hopes of becoming someone who deserved abundance. But no matter how hard I worked, nothing changed the way I hoped. The promises of the law of attraction and prosperity gospel started to feel like gaslighting—like if it wasn’t working, it must be my fault. I internalized it as failure, as proof that I was broken or cursed when it came to money. And it wasn’t just the inner work—I worked hard in external ways too. I built skills, pursued opportunities, worked on professional growth, and still found myself hitting the same walls. It left me questioning my worth and wondering if success was only for people who already felt whole. But I’m learning that healing isn’t a prerequisite for success or for being seen, respected, or loved. We don’t have to be perfectly aligned or “fixed” to deserve a breakthrough. We can be in process and still be enough. We can be messy and still make progress. Our worth isn’t something we have to earn—it’s something we carry with us, something God has already give us, even when nothing’s working out the way we hoped.

Description:

If you’re feeling tired from trying to hold everything together perfectly — you’re not alone. In today’s episode, we’re having a real, honest conversation about what it looks like to choose progress over perfection. We’ll be looking at it through three lenses: first, how perfectionism shows up for just about everyone when we tie our worth to our performance; second, how it runs even deeper for trauma survivors, where perfection sometimes became a way to stay safe or avoid harm; and third, how even in our Christian walk, perfectionism can quietly slip in and make us feel like we have to earn God’s love — when the truth is, His love has never depended on our performance. Each of these journeys is different, but if you see yourself in any of them, know this: you are already loved, already enough, and you are not alone in this fight. Today, we’re giving ourselves permission to grow at our own pace, trust God's grace, and celebrate every small, brave step we take.

When you’ve experienced trauma, it can be hard to separate who you are from what you’ve been through. The way trauma affects the brain can leave you with deep-seated beliefs that you are unworthy, broken, or beyond healing—but that isn’t the truth. You can feel like you're always reactive, angry, and afraid. In this episode, we explore how trauma distorts self-perception and how both psychology and faith offer pathways to reclaiming your identity. We’ll talk about how the brain forms false narratives around trauma, why healing requires both renewing the mind and restoring the nervous system, and how Scripture speaks directly to our worth and purpose. You’ll also get practical exercises—like journaling through a new lens, reframing painful memories with God’s presence, and using breath prayers to calm anxiety. If you’ve ever wrestled with feeling unseen, unworthy, or stuck in old patterns, this episode offers tangible steps to help you reconnect with who you truly are in Christ and in your intrinsic worth.

Description:In this first episode of the season, we’re tackling the impact of words—how well-meaning but uninformed people and abusers use language to dismiss, shame, or control survivors. These statements can keep you stuck in self-doubt and isolation, making it harder to trust yourself and your healing process. We’ll break down common phrases that invalidate and gaslight, then reframe them with trauma-informed alternatives that affirm your experiences and support your growth. We break this down into two categories, phrases that well-meaning people who are not trauma-informed say and phrases that abusers use intentionally to cause harm. This episode is about recognizing the harm in these messages, rewriting the narrative, and choosing words that empower instead of diminish. Let’s start this season by standing in truth and reclaiming the language of healing so we can live the lives God intended for us.

Description:

In this episode, we explore why the holiday season can be uniquely challenging for many, particularly those coping with grief, strained family dynamics, loneliness, trauma, financial stress, or mental health struggles. For many, the holidays are a time of joy, family, and the celebration of the birth of our savior. For others, the holidays can be more complicated. We discuss practical strategies to protect your emotional well-being, such as setting boundaries, managing expectations, creating space for rest and joy, and finding meaningful ways to connect with others. We also discuss how you can help others who may be going through similar challenges. Remember it's okay if you're feeling a lot of emotions during the holidays. Take time to feel these, while also finding ways to feel peace, joy, and comfort where you're at, even if the holidays can be difficult. By addressing these challenges with compassion and by being intentional, you can navigate the season more peacefully and create a sense of hope, safety, and healing for yourself and others, even amidst the challenges of the holidays.

Description:

It can be easy to get caught up in what happened to us, in difficulties, and in the healing work so much, that forget why we're doing this healing work, to experience more joy! The following saying resonated with me and inspired this podcast: "You're not healing to be able to handle trauma. You're used to trauma. You're healing to be able to handle joy." Joy is one of the fruits of the spirit and a fruit of our healing labors. God wants us to not only experience joy, but to embody it. We cover why joy is so important in trauma recovery, how to avoid toxic positivity and bypassing when cultivating joy, and how to cultivate more joy in your life with the realities and unique challenges of being a trauma survivor in mind. As a survivor, it can be more challenging to experience joy, but like the rest of healing work, it is a skill that can be learned. You CAN live a joyful life, in spite of all that has happened to you.

Description:

Many of us heard growing up that self-care was "selfish" or "ungodly." However, no one can give from an empty well, and even Jesus escaped the crowds for rest, solitude, and time with God. We all need forms of self-care to heal and restore our bodies, minds, and souls. Healing from trauma requires a holistic approach to self-care, addressing all aspects of our well-being. There are six categories of self-care: physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and practical. Each of these can be approached from a Christian perspective, especially for trauma survivors, to promote healing and growth. For survivors, it’s crucial to approach these categories of self-care with patience and self-compassion. Healing is a gradual process, and integrating these practices into daily life can help rebuild a sense of safety, control, and well-being. Additionally, anchoring these practices in faith can provide a deep sense of purpose and connection throughout the healing journey.

While it's easy to go down a rabbit hole on the concept of narcissism, it's good to be empowered and educated and protect yourself from narcissistic behaviors in certain others. Please keep in mind that having a certain level of narcissistic traits can be healthy in a balance. However, narcissism exists on a spectrum with some people having higher narcissistic traits, and even some who have full blown NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is in the DSM). We will go over the common categories of narcissists both in clinical and common spaces. We'll discuss how to spot each one, what their behaviors are, how they interact with others, and how you can protect yourself from these different types.

Episode Description

Mirror Neurons are one of the main parts of our brain that helps us with learning, cognition, empathy, and relationships. Mirror neurons are what help us respond to and learn from our caretakers as children and learn behavior through imitation, and they are involved in the development of our inner child. Understanding how mirror neurons impact these functions, as well as our childhood development and interactions with others, can help us understand what went wrong if we experienced traumatic events or abuse. Understanding what went wrong, we can also learn strategies to use our mirror neurons to heal our trauma through the body, brain, and neural network at its source. This episode explains these processes and gives you strategies for healing mirror neurons as well as an exercise to heal your inner child.

Description:

If you were raised in a family where people were narcissists or had high narcissistic traits, understanding the roles and relationship dynamics in a narcissistic family can help you understand your trauma and protect yourself now. When we say narcissistic family, this doesn't mean everyone is in the family has high narcissistic traits, but it means that one or more people does, either children, parents, or both, and this deeply impacts all family members.

We discuss the roles children play in this family dynamic. Then we discuss narcissistic family dynamics in general and the unwritten rules and behaviors in this family structure. Lastly, we cover when a sibling has these traits and how this can impact others in the family and when a parent has narcissistic traits and how this impacts the family. While it isn't healthy to obsess over the narcissist, understanding these family dynamics, you can learn more about why you are the way you are, know it isn't your fault, love all people in your family in the best way possible, and start the healing process to set healthy boundaries and protect yourself. You can live the life God intended, because you are empowered and educated on this family dynamic.

Episode Description
Even if we know it intellectually not to be true, trauma, abuse, and neglect survivors internalize blame when they are mistreated, particularly those who suffer from childhood abuses and narcissistic abuses. Knowing the difference between blame and self-validation, finding the balance between knowing what happened to you and taking ownership of healing, and finding the line between self-compassion and victim mindsets can make all the difference in your healing journey. It's important to know that two things can be true at once:

  • Abuse is never your fault AND you can take ownership of your healing journey.
  • You are enough AND feeling like it is your fault is normal when you've experienced abuse.
  • You can acknowledge what happened to you AND not live in blame or victim mentalities.

Description:

An HSP, or Highly Sensitive Person, is a person who has been proven by science to respond to the world differently. You may be more sensitive to light, sound, stimuli, people, and the emotions of others. Being an HSP comes with a unique set of gifts and challenges. While you are more attuned to the beauty around you, you may also be more aware of the dangers. In this talk, we cover how HSP's are wired, the science behind HSPs, how you can protect yourself as an HSP, and how you can care for yourself as a Christian HSP so you can share your gifts, love and help others, protect yourself, and do the healing work, at the same time. We cover twenty-one strategies to protect yourself through boundary setting, self-care practices, and protecting yourself as a Christian HSP in particular. God made you how you are because He wanted you exactly as you are, and you have a right to protect yourself as an HSP so you can live a happy and productive life.

Episode Description

Why The Pursuit of Peace and Acceptance Is Everything discusses the nature pursuing of peace and acceptance, what it looks like through a beloved character, Winnie the Pooh, and how we can practice this simplicity and acceptance on our healing journey like Pooh, to help overcome trauma with more flow, ease, and simplicity. Overcoming trauma isn't easy, and sometimes life can be difficult, but we don't have to struggle against it. This adds to suffering, whereas acceptance and nonresistance bring peace. Then we discuss the wisdom of Ecclesiastes and how pursuing peace, acceptance, and simplicity are biblical concepts that can help us overcome trauma, struggle, and complicating situations. By pursuing peace, simplicity, and acceptance, we give ourselves a better foundation for effective trauma healing, and we live a more enjoyable life free of struggle and striving as God intended.

Episode DescriptionIf you have experienced trauma, these experiences get stored in your body's memory, literally on a physical or somatic level. This unreleased trauma manifests in our emotions, behaviors, and health since it hasn't been resolved or released, and we pay a price. However, there is hope. We are not stuck with trauma. God has given us modern techniques to help us release trauma from the body. In Therapies and Practices to Release Trauma from the Body, we discuss how trauma gets trapped in the body based and it's impact on the brain, neural network, and our health. We then review practices you can use to release trauma somatically from the body to help you heal complex trauma, going more in-depth on how trauma releases from the body from a physiological standpoint. Lastly, we discuss therapies that can help us release trauma from the body, including using biofeedback to monitor physical responses as we release trauma and do healing work. God has given us tools to help us release trauma we never asked for, and there is hope to live the life God meant for us to live.

Episode DescriptionIn Coming out of the F.O.G., we discuss the acronym, Fear, Obligation, and Guilt, which creates the acronym F.O.G. Much like the word "fog," emotional manipulators will often use fear, obligation, and guilt to confuse and control people, particularly those who are sensitive, compassionate, empathetic, and may be prone to codependency. This can make sensitive Christians especially vulnerable, since they tend have a strong level of conscientiousness. Manipulators like to use tactics that will make others question themselves and their motives, often using gaslighting to keep the other person off balance. Though we are called by God to help others, it's important we examine our motives. If others are exploiting our good will with guilt to get us to do things, this is not from God. Knowing the strategies that emotional blackmailers use will help you to identify their tactics, respond constructively, protect yourself, and get your life back, so you can live the life God intended you to live. You can be free of these tactics and help others knowing your motives come from genuine love and care for others.

Episode Description

This week, this episode reminds you of your worth, both in Christ and your intrinsic worth. Your value comes from both the fact that you are in Christ and that you are you. Sometimes we need to be reminded that we are worthy, that we have unconditional value at our core, and that nothing that has happened to us or that we feel changes that. We may have been programmed with trauma, but our worth and core identity is still the same. Just as God and His love for us don't change, neither does our worthiness. We matter, we are loved, and God loves us, and sometimes we just need to remember this.

Episode Description

In Subtle Types and Forms of Abuse and What to Do About Them, we discuss the hidden nature of certain types and forms of abuse and why these forms of abuse often go unnoticed, why the survivor doesn't always believe it is abuse, and how certain people use these forms sow doubt and confusion in the survivor as a form of control and manipulation. The unique nature of this kind of abuse is often unnoticed or not believed by outsiders. However, by learning to identify and understand these forms of abuse, we are able to understand what is happening to us if we are in a situation with hidden and subtle abuse, while distinguishing between abuse and normal human flaws in a relationship that we all have. When we can identify these forms of abuse and call them by their name, we can validate our experiences, know our experiences are real, seek help and resources that can help us untangle this confusion, and get our lives back so we can find clarity and safety in our lives, living the life God intended us to live.

Episode Description

In Trauma Reenactments, we discuss what trauma reenactments are, why they happen, and practices to help us identify, stop, and prevent them from happening again. Trauma reenactments are patterns we repeat again and again similar to traumas in the past. They can be pervasive and difficult to notice, because we may believe they are "just the way things are." But they're not. While these patterns are not our fault, if we are able to identify these reenactments, be honest about what they are and where they come from, and create more space between a trigger and a reaction, we are able to gain power over the moment when a trauma reenactment starts to occur, or to stop one that is already occurring. By changing our reaction, we create a new habit, which allows us to heal our trauma reenactments and create space for positive and healthy habits, responses, and relationships in our lives.

Episode Description

Shame is probably the most powerful and deeply rooted core wound we can have, and it's often a result of abuse, neglect, and trauma. In The Power of Shame and What to Do About It, we discuss what shame is, its origins, and the insidious nature of shame, including how it comes from the enemy. This episode discusses the deep power of shame, what it does to us, and how pervasive it can be on an unconscious level, including the difference between guilt and shame. Guilt states "I made a mistake," and shame states, "I am bad" or "there's something wrong with me." We discuss how it's important to distinguish these two and become aware of our shame. This episode then shows how love, validation, and bringing shame into the light can help us heal it, knowing we're not alone. We discuss specific practices and strategies to heal shame, as well as the powerful results of healing shame, like a weight has been lifted from our shoulders. Through healing shame, we can feel better and live the life God meant for us to live.

Welcome to a new season. Staying on the Healing Path starts the new season by sharing with you tips to help you stay on the healing journey. This episode discusses the nature of the healing journey, how the natural progression of healing is three steps forward and two steps back, and how we can approach the healing path with the right mindset. Then the podcast discusses how to deal with inevitable interruptions of our healing practice by discussing how we should approach setbacks, slacking, and obstacles on the journey and our daily practice, as they are a natural part of the path. Lastly, we discuss how to customize your daily practice to your unique nature, needs, situation, and changing experience to help you take the journey with a healthy, constructive, and realistic approach to taking a step toward the healing God can give you every day. Episode Description

Don't Make Trauma Your Whole Identity, discusses how trauma survivors have their entire brains rewired when they experience trauma. As a result, when we become aware of what has happened to us and start our healing journey, it can be challenging not to make trauma our entire identity. It's easy to get into a loop of overidentifying with trauma and what has happened to us, to the point we can get stuck. This isn't our fault, but we can do something about it. By separating our core identity with what happened to us, and by rewriting our identity, we can start to move past the trauma and not get stuck in this loop. No doubt, trauma impacts our identity, how we think, and how we live day to day, including how our "default mode network," or the part of our brain involved in identity, operates. However, how we relate to trauma, think about it, and work toward recovery can help us build a strong identity outside of our trauma. Additionally, knowing who we are in Christ and what God says about our identity helps us build a strong core self, so we can build a healthy identity separate and free from our trauma.

Episode Description

What's the Connection Between Love Languages and Healing Trauma? discusses how we can harness the Five Love Languages, based on Gary Chapman's 1992 book of the same name, to cultivate a sense of safety, connection, and practice to help us heal trauma. This episode explains what the five love languages are, how they operate, and how people's love languages are often formed by unmet needs from childhood. We then discuss how our love languages can be our deepest vulnerability, but they can also be an entry point into our deepest sense of connection and safety, two essential parts of trauma healing. Lastly, the episode discusses how using the right healing practices based on your unique language will help you heal most effectively, how we can heal and find safety through our love language, and how we can help those we love find the same through their love language.

Rethinking Our Thoughts Part II: What Is Learned Helplessness and How Do I Overcome It? is the second part of a two part series. Last episode, we discussed cognitive distortions and how they contribute to the trauma cycle. Similarly, learned helplessness is "a condition in which a person has a sense of powerlessness, arising from a traumatic event or persistent failure to succeed. It is thought to be one of the underlying causes of depression," according to Oxford Languages. Learned helplessness is the opposite of grit, which we discuss often on the channel. This episode discusses how learned helplessness occurs, who it impacts, and how we can get our lives back by practicing it's opposite: Learned Optimism. which a is cultivated practice that helps us develop grit, hope, and flexibility in the face of adversity, even if we've experienced trauma in the past.

Episode Description

Rethinking Our Thoughts Part I: What Are Cognitive Distortions and How Can I Overcome Them? discusses how hope is not just something we have in Christ, but is also something we can cultivate on the healing journey, even if we're feeling hopeless. We learn hope by practicing it daily. Investing in our healing and taking daily steps toward progress today can give us hope for the future. Think about a time you made good choices or cultivated healthy daily habits in the past that you are benefitting from now. Now connect this experience to a current difficulty. If you make good choices now, you are giving yourself something to look forward to and hope to your future self. However, the process cannot be forced. It's accepting our difficult emotions with compassion--and not forcing healing--that moves us forward in hope. But the path doesn't always appear on its own. Cultivating a daily practice, meditating on hope in Christ, and trying something constructive will move us forward. When we take a leap of faith, then the path appears.

The Power of Hope in Emotional Recovery discusses how hope is not just something we have in Christ, but is also something we can cultivate on the healing journey, even if we're feeling hopeless.

Episode Description

Integrating Our Faith and Practice on the Healing Journey discusses the relationship between daily practices to heal trauma and our relationship with God. While these may not be completely separated, carving out a space for each separately, as much as we're able, is important. The episode also discusses how to use discernment in the healing practices you use and to follow what God is telling you to do and give other people the grace and space to do the same. Everyone's healing journey and relationship with God is unique. Through discernment, in the practices we choose to do, we have agency under God's authority. While we are called to be part of the flock and respect the church, remember it's okay to explore different churches, practices, and congregations, with your relationship with Christ and healing journey in mind. You have agency, autonomy, and choice on this healing journey. You are safe and loved, and God will guide you on the journey.

Description:
The most downloaded episode in the history of the podcast has been Season 2, Episode 12: Childhood Emotional Neglect: A Hidden Epidemic, so there's a need to understand CEN further. What's Childhood Emotional Neglect Got to Do With Abandonment Trauma? discusses the impact of childhood emotional neglect (CEN) on survivors by exploring the connection between CEN and fear of abandonment. Seeing this connection can be the difference between a life of confusion, gaslighting, and bondage, and power, freedom, and clarity. We discuss the nature of CEN and how it is not always intentional or malicious, but it's nature is insidious because it's hidden. It's the most likely form of abuse to be denied, invalidated, and doubted since it is abuse by omission instead of commission. CEN can make us doubt our own reality. We discuss ways to know whether or not you're living with the impacts of CEN, cut through the mind fog, and find clarity and truth on this issue. Even though it's painful at first, the truth sets us free. By learning how you can contact, validate, and understand your hidden experience, you can use this revelation to heal the impacts of CEN, know what happened to you was real, and build healthy relationships that move beyond abandonment trauma.

Episode Description:

Why You Need to Be Gentle With Yourself on This Journey is a talk God put on my heart after encountering so many trauma survivors who struggle with their faith because of harsh treatment from people within the Christian community regarding their struggles. Many people have not only not received compassion, love, and understanding, but they've been blamed for their trauma. We're often taught not to have compassion for ourselves, and not following the fruits of the spirit of gentleness, meekness, lowliness, and kindness to others is rampant even in the Christian community. There is oftentimes even narcissism and abuse within the church. This talk calls for us to be kinder and gentler with ourselves on the healing journey, as we are called to be with others, to give ourselves a little credit for our progress, and to learn to take a gentle approach when navigating the healing journey.

Description:A lot of trauma survivors have been told that they "should just be grateful," as if they can flip a switch, turn off trauma in the body, and suddenly feel grateful. Gratitude for a survivor is more complex than that. We can be grateful, but it needs to be in a way that works with our nervous system, realistic for where we're at, and a natural choice, not forced. We do this by being gentle with ourselves, practicing self-compassion, and acknowledging honestly where we're at. This episode discusses the benefits of gratitude, how it can help heal trauma, and realistic ways you can practice gratitude or at least be one step closer to gratitude through self-compassion. Doing the best you can is enough. God knows you're doing your best. As we learn to cultivate real gratitude, we're able to see God more in our situation, practice concrete gratitude that heals trauma, and see benefits of gratitude manifest in our lives.

Episode Resources:Here's a coupon for almost 1/2 off my gratitude course "Ignite Your Abundance Through the Power of Gratitude", which can help you cultivate concrete practices of gratitude to heal trauma and live a better life.

Episode Description:

In The Four Trauma Responses and How to Heal Them we discuss the four major ways our bodies respond to trauma. Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn are the main ways people who've experienced trauma respond to extreme stress and traumatic situations. Everyone has these responses to some degree, and they are healthy in certain situations. Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn serve a purpose in protecting us in stressful or dangerous situations, but if we have sustained experiences in these states, we can stay stuck in these states, because the nervous system gets overstimulated by stress and trauma. By understanding the four responses to trauma and which ones you might be more prone tone, you can begin to identify how you respond to trauma and take action to become aware of, work on, and overcome your responses from the ground up. The key here is partly changing behavior, and the other key is to find out what your response is, where it comes from, and heal it at the root.

DARVO, or Deny Attack Reverse Victim and Offender, is an acronym for how toxic people will often manipulate others if they are confronted about an issue or wrongdoing. If you've ever been in this situation, you may confront an abuser, manipulator, or narcissist about their behavior, and somehow by the end of the conversation, you're the one apologizing to them. This tactic is tricky and deceitful. By learning about DARVO and how it works, you can empower and protect yourself if someone uses this gaslighting technique on you. This talk discusses who is most likely to use DARVO and why, who it targeted and why, how to recognize DARVO, circumstances when DARVO is most used, and impacts of DARVO on the victim and on groups. Then we discuss how to identify, respond to, and protect yourself from this tactic so you can take your power back and live the life God intended for you.

Episode Description:

Real. Relevant. Relationship.--The Role God Plays in our Recovery is a concept God put on my heart, and I didn't know what I would say until the podcast was recorded. The role God plays in our recovery is everything. Some will say if you aren't recovering from difficult emotions, trauma, depression, anxiety, or abuse, you don't have enough faith in God or you're not doing enough of something, but most of the time, this simply isn't true. It's both our relationship with God and the scientific modalities that target trauma at its source combined, that help us make progress in recovery. While this is true, our real, relevant relationship with God lights the way, and as we heal, the holes we punch in our trauma let the light and love of God in, so we can live the vivid and beautiful life God meant for us, in full living color.

Episode Description:

How Internal Family Systems Can Help You Heal Trauma describes a therapy called IFS for short, what IFS is, how it can help you heal trauma and difficult emotions, and how you can use this therapy for your own healing journey with a therapist or on your own. We learn about how IFS is broken down into parts and self, how these parts and self interact based on your past experiences, and how you can relate to these parts and self to help you heal emotionally. By learning how your mind works through this process, you have a way go inside the roots of your thoughts, emotions, and trauma and understand how they function. With this understanding, you can relate to yourself and parts with more compassion, deal with past experiences with more awareness, and build an identity that is strong, more integrated, and healthy, so you can live the life God made you to live.

Welcome back! Twelve Steps Recovery and How it Can Help You Heal Trauma and Abuse is the first episode of the new season. Most people are familiar with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and how it helps those recovering from alcohol misuse, but many people don't know there are programs for other forms of recovery. We'll discuss what twelve-step programs are, how they can help those not only in addiction recovery, but in emotional recovery as well.

There is a direct link between addiction and trauma, and many addictions have traumatic and psychological roots. Trauma and codependency recovery programs have their roots in original twelve-step programs like AA. We'll discuss four twelve step programs--Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Codependents Anonymous (CoDA), Celebrate Recovery, and Al-Anon--and what each one does, who each helps, how each can help you, and how these programs can strengthen your faith in God. Then we'll discuss how addiction and trauma recovery have similarities when it comes to behavior, causes, and relapses, as well as strategies to stay on the path to recovery. Lastly, we'll discover how the steps in these programs can help you cut the roots of trauma and addiction in your life for good.

Episode Description:

This episode was adapted from a recent Youtube video. Check out and subscribe to the Youtube channel linked below for more talks like this one not found in the podcast. This talk discusses what healthy boundaries are and what they are not. In the first half, we discuss what a boundary is using Henry Cloud's metaphor of property lines and why setting healthy boundaries is not only okay, but healthy. Setting boundaries is not selfish. You must set healthy boundaries to be a functional human being and to build loving relationships. We also discuss ways setting boundaries helps us obey God and consider others' needs. In order to set good boundaries, you need to understand the value of your own agency, autonomy, and individuality. Through this episode, we discuss who we might set boundaries with, reasons we don't set boundaries, differences between people with healthy boundaries and those without good boundaries, and ten specific strategies to set healthy boundaries. This video will help you learn to take care of yourself and love who God made you to be.

Resources:

10 Ways to Build and Preserve Better Boundaries in Psych Central by Shannon Martin, LCSW is an article I reference in the video that discusses what boundaries are, why they are necessary, why we are afraid to set boundaries, strategies to set them, and specific scenarios that give examples of healthy boundary setting.

Boundaries: When to Say YES and When to Say NO to Take Control of Your Life by Henry Cloud and Peter Townsend was mentioned as a recommended book to go more into detail with setting healthy boundaries in different situations and with different people.

How to Set Boundaries YouTube video with Dr. Henry Cloud is the video I mention that uses property lines as an apt metaphor for setting good boundaries.

How to Set Boundaries: Five Ways to Draw the Line Politely by Logan Bailey on Science of People is another article that I mentioned in the talk that discusses areas of our lives that need protection with boundaries, people with whom we might set boundaries, differences between healthy and unhealthy ones, and strategies for setting good boundaries.

Applying Polyvagal Theory to Heal Trauma and Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Trauma Recovery

This episode repurposes two related Youtube videos that contain visuals. If you would like to view these, feel free to watch the two videos with visuals instead, linked here ("Applying Polyvagal Theory to Heal Trauma" AND "Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Trauma Recovery"), OR you can consult the visuals linked below at these time intervals in the episode as you listen to the podcast.

Video Description for "Applying Polyvagal Theory to Heal Trauma":

Polyvagal Theory helps you understand how your nervous system works, how trauma gets stuck in your body, why you can't just "think" you way out of trauma, and how you can find ways to heal trauma by targeting it in the body. Understanding this system will help you know why trauma gets stuck in the body, and you can become aware of these states and start practicing specific techniques to stay in a regulated state. This video includes visuals based on established research to clarify how polyvagal theory works, and how you can apply its concepts to your own life. This will help you release trauma from your body, recondition your body, brain, mind, and nervous system into a relaxed state, and help you understand what is going on inside of you.

Video Description for " Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Trauma Recovery":

Vagus Nerve Stimulation is one way to help regulate your nervous system and heal trauma in the body. The Vagus Nerve, based on Polyvagal Theory regulates several systems in the body including our response to certain stimuli. If we get stuck in fight or fight or disassociation for extended periods of time because chronic abuse, trauma, and adverse experiences, it can cause damage to our vagus nerve. Vagus nerve stimulation exercises and practices can help you begin to tone and heal the vagus nerve so it functions properly. Healing the vagus nerve can help your body function better, help your body deal with stress better, and help you release trauma that has been stuck in the body. Before watching this video, I strongly recommend watching the video "Applying Polyvagal Theory to Heal Trauma" on this channel as a foundation of knowledge to understand this video better.

Somatic Practices for Healing Trauma Part II: Practices You Can Do With a Professional is Part II of a two-part series on somatic therapies for healing trauma. This series covers practices you can do on your own or with a professional. Somatic therapy is based on more recent research and generally more effective than talk therapy for healing trauma. It's basically another name for body work, or connecting with the body's sensations and resources to heal trauma stuck in the body so it can release through your neural network. This may include therapies with a specialist who does body work with you to release trauma or heal the effects of trauma. Part II discusses co-regulation with a therapist, body therapies you can do with a specialist, and breakthrough treatments in trauma recovery that are still in their experimental phases like micro dosing under a special doctor's care, and utilizing new devices for healing trauma.

Video Description:Trauma Recovery is tricky work, and it's easy in everyday life and when we're doing healing work with a therapist or on our own to unintentionally retraumatize ourselves through no fault of our own. Knowing what works and doesn't work is vital to trauma recovery. Most people don't understand the nature of trauma recovery, and even many well-meaning experts can cause more harm than good when trying to help you. Often, we don't even know that certain events, healing strategies, or circumstances can retraumatize us. This video discusses ten specific ways we inadvertently become retraumatized and then ten solutions to avoid retraumatizing ourselves when doing healing work. We go into detail about why retraumatization happens in these situations and specific techniques that will help you move forward with healing work, while protecting yourself from further trauma. With the right education and tools, you CAN move forward instead of backward in your recovery journey and achieve Healing That Sticks!

Resources:A.C.O.R.N Meditation I've linked the playlist to all four versions here. I mentioned this meditation in 18:30 of the video as one way to begin to see the difference between your initial trauma and layering more trauma, and it will help you with the other nine strategies as well.
How Not to Get Retraumatized by Trauma Therapy in Gateway Counseling by John Hawkins, Jr., M.S., L.M.H.C., M.C.A.P.
Are You Retraumatizing Yourself? 16 Self-Defeating Behaviors Common in Childhood PTSD by the Crappy Childhood Fairy--This is a video.

Complex PTSD Treatment and Can You Fully Recover by Roland Bal

While I didn't refer to these sources individually in the video, these are the sources that gave me ideas, along with my own, for the list, credited here. The above articles are also great resources that will give you more context on the ten strategies and further ways to avoid being retraumatized. I mentioned Roland Bal in the video, and how his meditations have helped me. These aren't free meditations, but they are helpful. I've linked Roland Bal's webpage and meditation videos below.

Childhood Emotional Neglect: A Hidden Epidemic illuminates the often hidden and confusing nature of childhood emotional neglect, also called CEN. If you feel like something is wrong with you, but can't put your finger on it, there is a possibility it could be childhood emotional neglect. Because of the hidden nature of childhood emotional neglect, many people go their entire lives unhealed of trauma that isn't their fault.

This episode discusses what childhood emotional neglect is, how it impacts survivors, why we often don't believe we've experienced this ourselves, how we can overcome this disbelief if there is strong evidence we survived childhood emotional neglect, and how we can overcome and heal from this silent epidemic.

Episode Description:How Grit and Resilience Can Help You Heal Trauma helps you consider a balanced approach to healing trauma that works. Many of us have been shamed for not knowing how to heal, and we've been told that we don't pray enough or have enough faith. We've also been told to bootstrap our healing, and if we can't, it's our fault. This approach is toxic and retraumatizing, and it doesn't work.

Likewise, many of us have been taught helplessness through example or because we've experienced so much abuse, neglect, pain, and disappointment that we no longer believe healing is possible because we feel we've tried everything. We begin to feel beaten down and hopeless. This is learned helplessness, and while it's not our fault, it CAN be overcome with a trauma informed approach. We CAN heal trauma when we balance grit, resilience, and learned optimism as skills that can be cultivated with self-compassion and body based resiliency techniques. With the right tools, healing is possible!

  • What is Learned Helplessness and Why Does it Happen by Kendra Cherry in Very Well Mind gives a definition and explanation of learned helplessness. Learned helplessness is a research based concept that is the opposite of resilience.
  • Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life by Martin Seligman is a book I recommended in the podcast. It gives you a more detailed approach to overcoming learned helplessness and learn resilience.
  • The Spoon Theory by Christine Miserandino is a famous article I referenced in the podcast that discusses how many of us do have realistic limitations that we must work with, but I also mention that we still have a lot of control, agency, and power to heal and grow.
  • The Trauma Resiliency Model: A 'Bottom-Up' Intervention for Trauma Psychotherapy by Linda Grabbe and Elaine Miller-Karas in the Journal of Psychiatric Nurses Association is an article I mentioned in the podcast that gives you the science behind resilience to heal trauma and a research based model of nine steps to apply resilience to trauma.
  • Trauma Resiliency Model: Why Trauma Rehab Therapy Might Be Right for You by The Dawn Rehab is an article that discusses the nine steps in the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) in layman's terms so you can research them and apply them to your own trauma recovery.
  • Growth After Trauma by Richard G. Tedeschi gives you research based steps you can use as you heal and become more resilient. Note that you won't go through these linearly, but may go back and forth and in and out of these, but will do the latter steps more as you heal.

Episode Description:

Erikson's Stages of Development and Adverse Childhood Experiences is also a Youtube Video. If you haven't please click the link below and subscribe for exclusive content different than the podcast. Adverse Childhood Experiences (or ACES) can impact our development as children. If we survived narcissistic abuse, childhood trauma, childhood emotional neglect, or any other form of abuse at a specific time in our development, we often get stuck there, and the trauma that impacts our lives will make our reactions to triggering situations similar to that of our reactions at that age. In other words, our social and emotional development becomes stuck and we repeat patterns from childhood.

By understanding Erikson's Stages of Development and how adverse childhood experiences that occurred during these specific stages impacted us, we can begin to take inventory of our own emotional and social development, where and when trauma may have kept us stuck, and start doing healing work around these age periods through journaling, meditation, and inner child work to help us release that trauma and develop emotionally and socially into the healthy adults God made us to be by healing trauma at its true source.

Resources:

Erik Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development by Kendra Cherry in Very Well Mind is an article that describes Erikson's Stages of Development and the significance of each. It describes what healthy development in each stage looks like as well as potential consequences of adverse experiences that can impact development in each stage from infancy to old age.

The Top Five Regrets of the Dying is a book I mention in the video/podcast in the last of Erikson's Stages of Development as a great book for considering what matters in life. This book was written by a woman who cared for hundreds of terminally ill patients, learned their deepest desires and regrets, and compiled a list of the repeated themes of what these individuals wish they had and had not done. It provides great insights on how to live a full, happy life without regrets.

Seven Ways Childhood Adversity Changes a Child's Brain by Donna Jackson Nakazawa in Aces Too High News covers what adverse childhood experiences are and how adverse childhood experiences can impact brain and social development in a child. By understanding more about adverse childhood experiences and how they impact the individual, you can start to make connections between different stages in your own development and these types of experiences to put the pieces together regarding your own areas of trauma so you can start to target these areas and get to trauma where it originally started.

Episode Description:The Impact of Narcissistic Abuse on Our Relationship With God is the last episode in the Series on Narcissistic Abuse. When we are raised by people with narcissistic traits, in a rigid religious environment, or we are abused or neglected long term in other ways, we believe the qualities that our caretakers have are also what God is like. Our caretakers are often projecting misconceptions onto God that they were taught as well, and they pass them down to us. As children, we have no other frame of reference for what God is like, who God is, or who we are in Christ. As a result, we are often left confused with mixed messages. We come to see God as rigid, withholding, harsh, judgmental, angry, stingy, or cold.

These misconceptions can cause us harm, making us feel fear, unworthiness, resentment, anger, and even despair in our relationship with God. This causes many to stop believing. It's life changing to separate our misconceptions about God from who God really is based on truth: scripture, healthy psychology, and objective reality. This also helps us heal misconceptions about ourselves. By healing our distortions and projections, we can enjoy a loving, secure, safe, and peaceful relationship with God (perhaps for the first time), run toward God instead of away from Him, and live the life He intended us to live.

Episode Description:The Impact of Narcissistic Abuse on Our Relationship With Others is part of the Series on Narcissistic Abuse. It discusses how being raised in adverse childhood conditions or by narcissistic types can impact our mental health and programming and make us codependent. This episode then describes what codependency is, the traits of codependency, how this impacts relationships, and how it is possible to heal from codependency.

Someone with codependent traits is more likely to attract relationships with narcissists and unhealthy individuals. Additionally, survivors of narcissistic abuse can also project unhealed past abuse onto healthy relationships. However, by learning the red flags of abusive relationships, healing codependent traits, and taking more honest self-evaluation, we can heal from narcissistic abuse and pursue and cultivate the healthy, loving relationships God intended us to have.

Episode Description:
God Will Heal Your Trauma and Emotional Abuse is a Youtube video I did a few years ago with the same name. I encouraged people that they can heal, God will heal them, and God's radical love is the source of all healing, including any trauma or difficult emotional issues you may be facing. This episode discusses attitudes that can re-traumatize you, how to avoid these, and how being deeply rooted Christ's radical love and grace keeps you safe and heals you, along with doing the right kind of healing work. This episode offers a word of encouragement and a reminder of why we do the healing work, that God's love it radical and his grace is scandalous, and that God will heal your trauma and emotional abuse.

Episode Description:

Taking Every Opportunity to Grow and Learn: Willingness, Non-Resistance and Acceptance to Heal Trauma is a two-episode series that examines the impacts of trauma, what resistance is, and why unhealed trauma survivors resist the reality of trauma instead of accepting it. It further explores the healing power of non-resistance to what is, and how this leads to healing and peace.

While there aren't always clear answers, this series explores why God allows difficult and traumatic experiences to happen, how resistance plays a part in these realities, and why we resist instead of accept them. It further examines how willingness, non-resistance, and acceptance toward what is improves our situation and allows us to heal our trauma, grow in these experiences, and find peace and meaning we might not find otherwise. Non-resistance leads us to a place of surrender in our walk with Christ.

Then, I share concrete practices that will show you how to apply willingness, non-resistance, and acceptance in your own life to heal trauma and ease your experience, even in the face of traumas and harsh realities.

2:17 What is Surrender, Willingness, Vulnerability, Non-Resistance, Trust, and Obedience?

Episode Description: Acceptance discusses what self-acceptance is, how self-acceptance can help us draw closer to Christ, and why accepting our shortcomings and coming to Him just as we are is the beginning of all healing. The radical acceptance and love that Christ says more about Him than our shortcomings, which enables us radical surrender to His grace. This is the first step to all healing.

I then share a personal story of an extremely difficult experience when I applied an exercise of acceptance to that pattern to bring down triggers that caused terror, related to trauma from the past. This acceptance exercise is simple, straightforward, and effective, and it can help you learn to accept your emotions and help your fear and the difficulty of certain situations to lose their power.

Episode Description:Codependency discusses what codependency is, how it impacts the individual, and how it impacts relationships. It also discusses the symptoms and causes of codependency. In Christian life, codependency and Christian love are often confused, but there are not the same thing. Many people are even raised by well-meaning Christian parents that confuse the two. This podcast differentiates between the two.

Additionally, this podcast clarifies how codependency can impact our relationship with God, how childhood trauma can impact codependency, and tools to help you target the symptoms and root causes of codependency so you can live a life of freedom and love.

It also helps you differentiate between codependent behavior and Christian love/loving your neighbor.

This article discusses how traumatic experiences in childhood can program a child to be codependent. Episode Description:Why We Need a More Integrative Approach to Trauma in Our Theology discusses how theology, churches, and Christian teachings often fail to address trauma properly. We can see how the realities of trauma have been integrated into literature, art, history, and music as ways to express and heal trauma. However, while not all theology does this, some theology dismisses trauma or claims that you can heal through traditional modalities alone, and if you don't, it's your fault and you're not trying hard enough.

If you've been told this, this can be re-traumatizing, and it simply isn't true. Witnessing and validating trauma is a more realistic approach to dealing with trauma. By having a more integrative approach to our faith and theology, including the realities of trauma into our practices, integrating our healing practice in with our faith and theology, and acknowledging how trauma works in conjunction with our faith, we can take a more integrative and holistic approach to trauma that allows our relationship with Christ to heal us and change our lives.

Breakdown of Episode:
1:18 Intro to Topic
3:47 Why You Can't Simplify Trauma and Put It in a Box
9:46 Why It's Important We Integrate the Complexity of Trauma into Our Approach to Theology and Scripture
17:57 Why an Integrative and Holistic Approach to Trauma in Your Life and in Our Theology is the Answer to Healing Trauma

Bulleted List of Resources

  • "How Christian Theology and Practice Are Being Shaped by Trauma Studies" in Christian Century, by Sheila Rambo
    https://www.christiancentury.org/article/critical-essay/how-christian-theology-and-practice-are-being-shaped-trauma-studies
This article discusses how trauma is integrated into our culture, art, literature, and history in many rich ways to help those who've experienced move through it and heal. However, theology doesn't always address the realities of trauma and integrating the realities of what has happened into human life. Our theology doesn't always address the complex and messy nature of trauma. Episode Description:Why You Can't Stay Small and Silent discusses why many of us who experienced emotional, narcissistic, and other forms of abuse stay small and invisible to feel safe. If we've been taught we are to be seen and not heard, our ideas are stupid, or taking risks were shot down with rejection, this is a normal response to this trauma.

The podcast also discusses why we cannot stay small if we want to fulfill God's calling on our lives, and why God does not want us to stay small and silent. We discuss examples of people who did not stay small and silent and the difference they have made in others' lives. What if they had stayed small and silent? How many lives would never have changed?

We cannot stay small and silent. Your message may resonate with others more than someone else's. You will not find peace unless you step up and do what God calls you to do. Don't stay small, give the world the gift that only you can give, and fulfill the unique purpose that God has given you.

Episode Description:
No Mo' FOMO discusses the psychological phenomenon that we all experience called "FOMO," or "Fear of Missing Out." Those who have experienced childhood trauma, narcissistic abuse, and other forms of trauma often feel they've been robbed of life experiences, safety, and joy, and this can lead to an urgency and fear of missing out on experiences or accomplishments. We all experience this to some degree, but some experience it more than others.

The podcast discusses different types of FOMO, strategies for dealing with it, and strategies to get past FOMO such as coming back into the present moment, not judging yourself, and being mindful, when it feels like it will overwhelm you. Then we discuss the differences between unhealthy and healthy FOMO and how God can use FOMO to motivate and speak to you at certain times.

Episode Description:
The Power of Repetition: Experiencing God's Love to Break the Trauma Cycle discusses the psychological roots of impacted childhood development usually based on when a child doesn't get bonding, safety, or nurture, or they are abused, these stages get interrupted. Children may not be able to self-regulate and have hyperarousal, and this can create a pattern of trauma response. This is the process that can start a trauma cycle from childhood into adulthood, impacting development.

However, there is hope. With powerful and repetitive connection to God as a base for safety and love through concrete practices, this cycle can be interrupted. These processes such as praise and worship, prayer, meditation, building a bond with God, and having God as a safe base will help interrupt these patterns, replacing trauma patterns with God's love and safety in His presence. Doing these repetitively and persistently can heal this trauma response and calm the soul in the long run.

Episode Description:

Is Mental Illness Hereditary or Environmental? breaks down where heredity ends and environment begins in determining or contributing to who experiences mental illness. This episode explains the complex biological, psychological, and hereditary factors that can contribute to or predispose anyone to mental health issues. One adverse factor doesn't guarantee you'll have mental health problems, any more than one positive factor guarantees not having them.

Then, we discuss how adverse childhood experiences (ACE) can contribute to mental illness. Two people in the same environment may be impacted differently, and nothing be wrong with either one of them. Some people are more naturally sensitive than others. We discuss how all these factors come together, combined with the unique traits of the individual, to determine whether a person experiences mental health issues.

Episode Description:

What's Trauma Got to Do with It? demystifies how trauma may explain why you struggle the way you do and why you are the way you are. It further explains why the symptoms of trauma aren't truly YOU, why there is nothing wrong with YOU, and why trauma isn't your fault. If you've experienced childhood trauma, childhood emotional abuse, or childhood emotional neglect, then chances are, you're living a daily trauma cycle that impacts and pervades every part of your life, perhaps in ways you're not even aware.

While no one should wish trauma on anyone, the pain of trauma, especially when we're mistreated by others, teaches us to have compassion on others, to treat others well, and how we never want to make others feel based on how we've felt. We also learn to have compassion for ourselves by seeing this contrast. We can also start to find modalities that help us heal, based our unique makeup and experience.

This episode addresses these issues, introduces you to the concept of trauma, and provides suggestions to help you get started or continue on your healing journey.

Breakdown of Episode:

4:00 Why You Are the Way You Are and Why It Isn't Your Fault

14:00 How Trauma Can Help You Have Compassion for Others and Yourself

22:39 How You Can Start to Heal Yourself

Episode Description:

What is Wrong With Me and Why Can't I Heal explains why there is NOTHING wrong with you and that you CAN heal, even if you didn't think you could in the past. If you've experienced childhood trauma, childhood emotional abuse, or childhood emotional neglect, then you probably have trauma stuck in your body.

The nature of trauma requires a unique form of emotional healing that targets trauma on the level of the body and brain using cutting edge science and body work. This podcast will show you how to heal at the root of the source, even if you haven't been able to in the past.

If you experienced any of the three mentioned above, it's NOT your fault. It is up to you to do the healing work to find peace, healing, and breakthrough. It may seem in your previous experience that healing happens to someone else, not you. I had long given up on healing completely when I learned about the nature of my trauma, and that is when I started to heal, after decades of trying to heal and only making a little progress. But healing does happen! It happened to me, and I'll help you find healing. With Christ as our anchor, all things are possible!

This episode addresses these issues, introduces you to this podcast, and provides free resources to help you get started or continue on your healing journey.

Breakdown of Episode:

Episode 1 discusses general topics, so I won't include a breakdown of this episode. A breakdown of future episode with timestamps will be provided.
