The term codependency began being discussed in the late 1980s, with the first Codependency Conference being held in Scottsdale, AZ, in 1986. The terms have been used, banished, and used again. Dr. Tim Cermak tried to get the terms included in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, but so far, the term has not been included. One of the first books, Codependent No More, was written by Melody Beattie. Regardless of what the over-giver behavior is called, there are symptoms that are discussed in this episode.

The Enneagram originated as an oral tradition about 2000 years ago in Afghanistan. It later spread to Asia, Bolivia, Chile, and eventually to the US, where Claudio Naranjo passed it on to a Jesuit priest, Bob Ochs, SJ. It became a course at Loyola University in Chicago in 1971. Based on a simple symbol, it explains the journey of self-discovery into personality types. It is said that the One God walked around dispensing nine aspects of Its personality. If one follows the compulsion for safety, it is a journey of self-salvation. But if one goes against that compulsion, the journey is one that looks at the One God for salvation. Today, there are many explanations of this work, and there is a lot of confusion. The Welsh word 'hiraeth' is loosely translated to mean (n.) a homesickness or longing for a place you cannot return to, a home that may not have ever been—a yearning, a grief for a place that can never be revisited. Such grief and longing are experienced by children of divorce, addiction/alcoholism, death of parents, abandonment, who may feel orphaned by those experiences. These events ruptured their emotional development into adulthood, leaving them unable to articulate feelings of powerlessness and longing. Essentially, the orphan was left with no home base and no hope of changing the outcome. This orphan manifests in different ways during adulthood and can take many years to identify and heal.

When there is something happening in a child’s life and we want to protect them, our adult tendency is to smooth things over as quickly as possible, minimize things, and in essence, lie to them.  Perhaps someone is drunk and sleeping it off on the couch, yet we might say "Oh, they are tired and sleeping late.”  What we are telling the kid is, “I will determine your reality so do not trust your instincts.”  We set them up to trust external information rather than internal instincts. This episode explores how to use the 4 R’s,  Reflect, Redirect, Reassure and Repeat, when explaining difficult subjects to children.
