What started as helping out eventually turned into an opportunity when the club’s longtime mechanic faced health issues, pushing Chris into the equipment management role full time.

Dan shares how he got his start in the industry at just 14 years old filling divots at Queenstown Harbor before moving from the crew side into the shop. After stepping into an assistant mechanic role, he became a head mechanic only eight months later and spent 12 years at South River before stops at Woodmont and eventually Congressional.

They talk about the realities of managing people — the most rewarding and most stressful part of the job — along with favorite tools like calipers, preset torque wrenches, and a milling machine that’s become invaluable for rotary blade work and repairs. Today we’re talking with Marko Bistroi, Equipment Manager at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club in Ontario, Canada (not Ontario, California). Mississauga is a private 18-hole club, and Marko is running a true one-man shop out of a small space tucked under the clubhouse. His fleet is a mix of Toro, John Deere, Tru-Turf rollers, and a handful of other pieces that keep him on his toes.

Marko shares how he made the jump from automotive into turf after coming across a job posting, starting in a hybrid grounds and shop role before stepping into the head position. In Episode 162, Trent sits down with Kurt Horn, Equipment Manager at Fall Line in Butler, Georgia. Fall Line is a private club with 45 holes of golf along with hunting, fishing, and sporting clays, and Kurt is right in the middle of supporting a growing operation that runs primarily Toro equipment.

Back in September 2021, we interviewed Matt Leis, and in Episode 149 we’re catching up with him again to hear about his transition from the golf course to sports fields. Matt is now the Manager of Fleet & Irrigation at the Papago Baseball Complex for the San Francisco Giants Baseball Club in Phoenix, AZ. The 40-acre complex is home to player development and Minor League operations, featuring six full fields, auxiliary surfaces, and a 15,000 sq. ft. facility. Today we’re talking to James Breeze, Machinery Technician at Huddersfield Golf Club in Yorkshire, England, one of the oldest and most celebrated golf courses in the North of England. James is the lone tech in the shop, managing a fleet of mostly Toro equipment, and he’s also the recipient of the inaugural Bernhard Academy technician volunteer opportunity for the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.

We caught up with James at the 125th U.S. Open after a string of 4 a.m. volunteer shifts alongside a seasoned team of equipment managers. He shares insights on the camaraderie and precision it takes to keep things running smoothly at a major tournament.

James talks about his roots in sports field greenkeeping, teaching himself the mechanical side of the job, and the pivotal people who supported his transition. He reflects on the importance of learning from mistakes, the value of staying curious even at a high level, and how hiking and photography in the Yorkshire countryside help him reset outside the shop.

Mt. Hawley is a private 18-hole course spread across 110 scenic acres next to Peoria Lake. Chris has been at the course for over 30 years, surviving everything from a decade without a grinder to a full course renovation — and he’s still going strong.

Chris’s love of motorcycles steered him toward a degree in applied science with an automotive focus, eventually leading him to the parks district and then into golf course equipment management. He’s the lone tech in the shop during the busy summer months, maintaining a mostly Toro fleet with EZGO carts, and is a big believer in preventative maintenance — a lesson he learned early on from his dad, who once built an airplane in their garage.

Coming from a mechanical family, Sam initially pursued a career as a brick mason before receiving an offer to work with landscape equipment. What started as a “temporary” job at a golf course in Virginia turned into an outstanding career in turf management.

With a love for golf and the support of his resume coach (his wife!), Sam joined TPC Potomac before moving to TPC San Antonio. He was quickly impressed by the friendly community and excellent food in Texas Hill Country. Welcome to Episode 119 of the Reel Turf Techs Podcast! 🎙️ Today, we're chatting with Terry Appel, Equipment Manager at Overbrook Golf Club in Villanova, PA. Founded in 1900, Overbrook Golf Club boasts a rich history as an 18-hole private club.

Typically accompanied by one assistant in the shop (though currently on the lookout for a new addition), Terry primarily manages a fleet consisting of John Deere equipment with a sprinkle of Toro.

Terry's journey into the turf management world began at the tender age of four, where he learned early lessons about where to draw on the golf course (not the carts!). From placing scorecards and pencils to navigating the maintenance crew, Terry's passion for golf and mechanics eventually led him to SUNY Delhi for his bachelor’s degree and a start down the superintendent track. With experience in golf course construction and renovation, including projects at historic Oakmont Country Club, Terry found his niche in the shop beginning as an assistant mechanic and never looked back.

Outside of work, you'll find Terry exploring the great outdoors through hiking, camping, or hitting the gym for a good workout.

Greg Womble, Equipment Manager at Hasentree Club in Wake Forest, North Carolina, disassembled his mom’s Electrolux vacuum cleaner to make a hovercraft. He knew at a young age he liked to take things apart. His Dad took him to a Deere tractor dealer at a young age and he thought I wanted to work here. So, after college he started working there. After a short time he was service manager for the newly started golf and turf division. Greg enjoys smoking meat and music in his free time. He has been very involved with TETAC of the years.

Mitch Hunt, Equipment Manager at Traverse City Country Club in Traverse City, MI fell in love with turning wrenches at a young age. He started working on dirt bikes when he was five. He retired from owning a Yamaha Marine dealership and found he was getting bored. He answered an ad in the local newspaper that his friend showed him about the job at Traverse City Country Club. We set down and talk with Dr. Derek Houtz of TerraRad Tech and Jamie Sharp with taskTracker about their L-band radiometer (turfRad). It senses how much moisture is in the soil. The amount of water in the soil changes the amplitude of the emitted microwaves, allowing them to calculate the volumetric soil moisture. The sensor can be mounted to a golf cart or a mower. Most of their testing has been on fairways. They have saw some great results so far. We even get into how to fold a shirt with Jamie's experience working as a golf pro.

Tim Johnson, also known as TJ, Equipment Manager at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois, grew up on a farm. There was not enough on the farm to support him so he turned to factory work. It didn’t take him long to decide factory work was not for him. After a layoff, he found himself helping out at a golf course. 44 years later, he is still turning wrench at a golf course. TJ was one of the first members of the Chicagoland Technician Association.

Glenn Peters, Equipment Manager at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Illinois, found he could make money by repairing old equipment and selling it. He started his career at a hardware store and found himself at a golf course working as a mechanic in 1986. Peters fell in love with the variety that we see at the golf course. Daniel Heinze, CTEM, Equipment Manager at Kansas City Country Club in Mission Hills KS, found a love for turf equipment from his dad, who was Toro salesman. Daniel went to K State where he found that being an engineer was not for him. He switched majors to agronomy and started down the path to become a superintendent. He transitioned to the shop after their mechanic left. He has always been a tinkerer and thought why not work on turf equipment. Daniel achieved CTEM last summer. He recently had his first child, which he loves spending time with.

Burke Anders started working at a Phillips 66 filling station when he was a young man. Now he is the equipment manager at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, SC. Anders spent many years traveling the Carolinas while working for Smith Turf and Irrigation, the Toro distributor for that area, as a mobile service technician. Matt Radatz, CTEM, equipment manager at Hawks Landing Golf Club in Verona, WI, started at the age of 15 working on a golf course for his dad, who was the superintendent. Matt quickly learned the ropes on equipment. He worked through EMCP levels one and two. He earned certified turf equipment manager status this summer. He is the first father and son team to both be certified. His dad Neil Radatz is a certified golf course superintendent. His dad is his mentor and they have a great relationship.

Bob Smith, Equipment Manager at PGA Frisco Golf Course in Frisco, TX, worked in construction most of his life before getting into club fitting. Bill Ledford, equipment manager at River Bend YMCA Golf Club in Shelby, NC, grew up working at a filling station owned by his parents. His mother taught him at a young age the value of treating people the way you want to be treated. Bill is one of those guys you meet once and feel like you have known him your whole life. For most of his career he was in field service for the Jacobsen distributor. Now he is semi-retired and just turning wrenches at a golf course. He still helps his wife, Mrs. Peg cut some yards like they have been doing for over 40 years.

Aaron Kirsch, equipment manager at Saginaw Country Club in Saginaw, MI, grew up working on a farm and after a stint in retail ended up at a golf course. He learnt a lot of his mechanical skills from his dad as a kid working on dirt bikes. He still has a passion for dirt bikes. He buys used bikes and fixes them up and sells them to make some side money. Listen in to find out how he made worm busters for his fairway units.

Kevin Bauer, CTEM, equipment manager at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, MA, started working on the golf course at the young age of 13. His first job was fetching balls out of the creek for free golf. Kevin was a longtime service tech for a Jacobsen distributor and worked at several golf courses in the Chicagoland area before heading east to Plymouth to be closer to family. In his free time Kevin enjoys playing a round or two of golf and kayak fishing with his kids. Kevin is one of the first CTEMs in the debut year of the program. Tune in and hear more about Kevin!

Nick Surrette, Equipment Manager at Union League Golf Club at Torresdale in Philadelphia, PA was introduced to the turf industry by his golf coach that just so happened to know Mike Elliott. Nick started a Pine Valley working for Mike as an assistant technician. Then he made his way to the Union League to run his own shop as the equipment manager. He is off to a great start and has learned so much from Mike and his high school shop teacher. He likes to work on his Subaru WRX in his spare time.

Mike Elliott, Head Equipment Manager at The Philadelphia Union League in Philadelphia, PA started working on the golf course at the age of 14. He got some great advice from the superintendent at the time, you should be a golf course mechanic. That’s exactly what he did. He set his ambitions pretty high by aspiring to be the equipment manager at Augusta National. He may have not made it to Augusta but he did make it to Pine Valley, yeah that Pine Valley. Now he is happy to be a part of the amazing things that are happening at the Union League. They are starting an apprenticeship program for golf course mechanics and it is off to a great start. Mike shares some great tips and tricks in the episode.

Dan Williams, equipment manager at Vestavia Country Club in Vestavia Hills, AL, started out in the foundry industry working on machines for most of his career. For the last ten years he was a mobile service guy traveling all over the world. He was ready to get off the road and be close to home when he answered a listing on a job board for a golf course equipment technician. He had no idea what he was getting into but has adapted very well with some mentors in the industry.

Tate Johnson, assistant technician at Chambers Bay in University Place, WA, was brought into the turf industry by his dad who is a superintendent. He has worked alongside his dad since a young age. His dad has also brought his brothers into the industry as assistant superintendents. Tate's decision to enter the industry took him straight to the shop where he works alongside a senior technician in Jerry Holcomb. Tate has a great passion for this career and wants to see more younger people join us.

David Blowers, Senior technician at Abell Turf and Tractor in Holly Springs, GA, was forced into Lake City Community College by his dad because he liked his mom’s cooking. He worked at a few golf courses before moving to the distributor side. Where he was the service manager at Georgia Turf and Tractor for many years. David is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to turf equipment and especially John Deere equipment. In the episode we touch on a lot of really important things like fostering relationships, using the tools in your toolbox and don’t be afraid to push yourself and others.

Daniel Barnes, Equipment Manager at The Ford Field and River Club in Richmond Hill, GA, was dragged to Lake City Community College by his grandma and entered the golf course maintenance program having never set foot on a golf course. After a stint as a small engine mechanic at an asphalt plant and some road time as a mobile service tech, Daniel found his professional calling at the golf course with its wide variety of things to wrench on. Lured to loving the game of golf as a kid, Austin Wright, CTEM, studied golf course management at Kansas State University before falling for the equipment side. After getting the basics at Washburn Technical, Austin learned under some great Kansas City superintendents then landed his current gig at Sand Valley Golf Resort in Rome, WI. Hear about Austin’s very cool lawnmower racing hobby, foamers, and some dad life tips you won’t want to miss.

Kayla Kipp, Equipment Manager at Nemacolin Resort, returns to the podcast to share some insider insight on volunteering at the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles. Kayla gives all credit to David Fruchte, CGCS, and his team of nine for ‘cutting a diamond’ at the course and welcoming the team of 31 volunteers to support his crew. Kayla enthusiastically shares the experience of being on a crew with so many other women in an industry where women are underrepresented (to say the least!). Kayla educates us on how the improvements in women’s golf affect not only the game but our industry as a whole. After attending automotive trade school and realizing he didn’t want to lift car and truck tires for the foreseeable future, Nick took off to the Power Sport Institute and started his career in a parts store. Nick’s grandma played a key part in his path when she brought him a newspaper ad clipping looking for a golf course mechanic. Nick honed his skills at a public course before landing at the Worcester Country Club as equipment manager and eventually facilities manager, maintaining clubhouse bowling lanes constructed in 1914 along with everything else. Nick talks fabricating everything from dishwasher parts to a gate with granite posts, and bonds with our host over their mutual love of voltage drop tests.

Robert Martyszczyk is among the born tinkerers of equipment managers, growing up with a mechanic dad and spending a lot of time in the garage. After many years of working on outdoor power equipment and building up his knowledge, an opportunity at TPC River Highlands (Cromwell, CT) came knocking. Robert learned golf course wrenching from a 31-year industry veteran. An outdoor enthusiast in his free time, you’ll find Robert camping, hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking as often as he can. Robert reminds us of the value of collective mentoring, crew communication, and continuing education.

After attending tech school as a diesel mechanic, Ryan spent lots of time on the road and working second shift with a young family at home. Looking for a better fit for family life, he stumbled across a golf course job on Indeed and describes discovering the turf industry as the best thing that’s happened to his career. We’re talking fabricating trailers and reel racks, reel storage ideas, and why it’s so great to be a golf course equipment manager. Meet one of the up and coming leaders in our industry who’s getting involved and making a difference at the local and national levels.

John Patterson, equipment manager at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, GA, rebuilt his first engine with his dad at eight years old and never wanted to be anything other than a mechanic. Fed up with Chicago winters, John headed south with plans to become a marine mechanic in southwest Florida. When every boat mechanic he met told him to do something else, John answered an ad at a golf course and after passing the “righty tighty, lefty loosey” test, the rest is history. From fabricating a sand silo and method for filing divot mix more efficiently to a better designed front roller bracket on the John Deere, listeners will find John’s reputation as one of the most brilliant in the business is well-earned. In his free time John enjoys his hot-rod Miata, tinkering on his 1975 BMW 750 and teaching his son to drive. As a founding member and past president of the International Golf Course Equipment Managers Association (IGCEMA), John is rewarded to see his vision come to life in the form of the Certified Turf Equipment Manager (CTEM) program launched this year.

Growing up in rural Missouri with a golf course as the only employer closer than a 45-minute drive, Shelby Dubois started out on the crew raking bunkers and walk-mowing greens. After attending Ranken Technical College for high-performance racing technology, Shelby found her way to the equipment side of the golf course. Shelby is the assistant technician at the Talisker Club at Tuhaye in Utah with dreams of heading to Florida. Gersain Villavicencio is the Equipment Manager at Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville, GA. Gersain followed his dad into the golf course world after finishing auto tech school and working at a transit bus garage. This new dad of a little boy loves traveling with his wife and deep sea fishing in his free time. And his deep sea fishing story is one we won’t soon forget!

Shane Pokorney is the Equipment Manager at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kansas. Shane started at Colbert Hills as a Kansas State student, working on the crew for beer money, and moved into the shop for a pay bump. A self-taught (thanks, Google!) mechanic with a degree in wildlife management, Shane discovered he liked hunting for fun more than for work and headed back to Colbert Hills. Shane tells us about the bridge crane he fabricated and gets into some chainsaw modification talk. An archery hunter, fisherman, and woodworker in his free time, Shane and his wife love to travel and are halfway to their goal of visiting all the national parks. Shane reminds us of the importance of doing things right the first time and communicates the value of attending the GCSAA Conference and Trade Show (if you don’t have the means to get there, be sure and apply for the Melrose EM Experience just like Shane did).

United States Army veteran Bryan Epland is the Equipment Manager at Arbor Links Golf Course in Nebraska City, NE. After an award-winning career as an army metal worker, Bryan transitioned to wheel mechanic and later pipeline specialist. Bryan’s varied experience in the Army prepared him well for the wide range of skills needed as a golf course mechanic. Bryan weighs in on the benefits of relief grinding, takes us through a few highlights of his many fabrication projects, and shares his favorite tool with a few previous guests. A hunter, fisherman, and gamer in his downtime, Bryan gives us a great tip on finding oil and hydraulic leaks. Get a true flavor of the heartland when this Nebraska native shares his side gig.

We’re talking with Chad Braun, Equipment Manager at Town and Country Club in Saint Paul, MN. This Twitter-famous EM started at a young age, inspired by his mechanic dad to land a job at a municipality. Turf came calling instead. We discuss the importance of customizing your preventative maintenance routine for common issues, operator training, and a detailed walk-through of Chad’s cleaning procedure. You’ll be happy to find out Chad is every bit as good a guy as he seems on Twitter. This proud dad of two gives back to the industry with all the knowledge he shares, and inspires others to do the same.

Matthew Caine, Equipment Manager at the Apes Hill Club in Barbados, started out working in the manufacturing industry. He saw an ad in a newspaper looking for a golf course fleet manager. He was interested at first but after talking to a coworker at his current job that had been there for 27 year and only had one Christmas off, the golf thing piqued his interest. Matthew manages five mechanics and a maintenance assistant in his current role. He has built a machine shop inside his shop to make parts because getting parts delivered in Barbados is difficult. Matthew is a relative newcomer to our industry but has made tremendous strides to get his equipment where it is today.

Ken Nail, Equipment Manager at Heritage Pines Golf and Country Club in Hudson, Florida is a United States Marine Corps veteran who found himself a turf mechanic after one conversation about a ‘68 Camaro. Ken learned to relief grind on a Foley grinder from 1969 that was still running in the 2000s. We discuss Ken’s mentor in the industry and the importance of quality of cut vs. being really great at changing oil. Ken reminds us to communicate well with operators and not to be the ‘grumpy mechanic.’

Tim Thurston, Equipment Manager at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ontario, started cutting lawns to make extra money and by high school had a crew of five working under him. Next Tim went to work at the golf course where his uncle was a superintendent and studied to be one himself. After serving as superintendent and EM at a series of courses Tim became a Jacobsen service manager and John Deere sales rep, traveling the globe equivalent to 90 times in his truck before settling back in at the golf course. An avid gardener and woodworker in his free time, Tim looks back on his 43 years as a turf tech.

Growing up on a strawberry farm and doing all the wrenching that comes with being a farm kid, Gary was introduced to the golf course by his mom who took a job in the kitchen at the Sharon Club. Tired of going home every day smelling like the rubber plant where he worked second shift while going to college, Gary agreed to give it a week working in the shop and never looked back. Gary finished his degree in mechanical technology engineering while beginning what would become a long tenure at the Sharon Club. Gary has seen it all in his time there including a tractor in a tree. Head Outside the Shop this week with Tyler Bloom of Tyler Bloom Consulting. This Penn State turf grad who worked his way from assistant to superintendent started his own successful workforce development consulting business in 2020. Meet the laid-back equipment manager from The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach - Chad Kintzer. Chad is a self-described big kid whose dad was a mechanic too. Chad served his country in the United States Army before starting his career as an auto mechanic in a local garage. After tiring of the people side of the auto tech business, Chad transitioned to building firetrucks before finding his way to the golf course. In his free time Chad enjoys cooking and smoking meats, living the dad life coaching his kids’ sports teams and now getting run ragged in his new role as grandpa.

After finding out the labor to install a lift kit for his Jeep was more than the kit itself, Justin decided to figure it out himself. From his entry to the professional world as a lube guy and flare-rate auto shop mechanic to working on a landscape crew at a local municipality, Justin found himself with an opportunity to learn at a municipal course with a more experienced technician willing to teach. Cautious by nature, Justin has learned from experience to dive in and learn what we don’t know. With a quick three years in the industry under his belt, Justin has found a role he loves as a golf course technician. Hear from Justin on tips for fabricating a retrofitted water cart with an electric hose reel and remember to put on that PPE and take good care of yourself. Justin takes care of himself as an avid hiker, kayak fisherman and runner in his free time.

Chris Lewis, equipment manager at East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta, GA got his start at the golf course in the cart barn. It didn’t escape the superintendent’s notice when Chris got a messed-up ball picker working, and the rest is history. This former motorcycle mechanic hopes to pass on his love of dirt bikes to his two young daughters. Hiring an EM? What Superintendents Need to Know.

John Murray, equipment manager at the Federal Club and the Kanawha Club, both in Virginia, shares his unique story with us this week. Growing up a tinkerer and passionate woodworker, John’s path to the shop included building custom storage buildings followed by 17 years building playground equipment. After the economic crisis in 2008, John made a big change and started building custom cabinetry and guitars after reconnecting with an old friend who turned out to be a Nashville musician. John got his start in golf from the caddying side, working at a local golf course and eventually finding his way to the shop. John shares what it’s like working at two courses. We discuss the value of building in extra cutting units in your equipment package purchases, fabricating rolling racks for spare sets of reels and aeration tines, and go down the rabbit hole together on torque talk.

Meet Brack Crouch, Equipment Manager at the Talisker Club at Tuhaye. Early in his career, Brack made a move from recent college grad in something he didn’t want to do, to the mowing crew where he did want to be - on the golf course. After working as an assistant superintendent who did a lot of the wrenching, to having his own building company, to facilities maintenance, Brack found his home at a unique mountain facility overseeing a truck fleet and snow equipment in addition to the usual golf course equipment. Brack maintains a tubing hill, cross-country ski trail, and is the second Zamboni wrencher we’ve had on the podcast to date. He got his reel grinding experience as a Toro dealership technician and eventually made his way to the golf course. We’re talking fabricating reel racks, going in-depth on shop floors, and how rewarding it is to see the results of your labor all day long. Howard Horne is the equipment manager at Bear’s Best Atlanta Golf Club. This farm kid from a no-red-light town in Florida made his way to metro Atlanta after getting hooked on the game of golf playing with friends. Howard transitioned from his first career as a meat-cutter through the storied mechanics program at Lake City Community College, working at several premier Atlanta area courses over the course of his 27 year (and counting) career. Trent and Howard discuss the challenges of outdoor equipment storage, fabricating brushes for triplex mowers, and classic golf course maintenance pranks among a slew of other topics and good memories. John Borsos shares with us in this episode of our Mental Health Series some of the warning signs that his anxiety had become unmanageable - including being unable to sleep - and the impact of alcohol as a coping mechanism. John gives a great perspective on how our thoughts and what we focus on are the filters through which we experience our lives. It’s not always as simple as ‘just change your thoughts’ but we can have an impact on our lives by doing so. Support from a friend, therapy professional, and medication can help too. David Currie, EM at Bayview Golf & Country Club in Thornhill, Ontario is the rare turf tech who received an education in turf mechanics. After a long-term layoff from workin’ on the railroad, David entered a program where his first apprenticeship interview featured tire changes and troubleshooting tests. David shares with us his latest fab projects including bench grinder stands, and backpack blower holders to prevent the dreaded “why won’t this start"s. Our host and David share their mutual love of the Toro 648 aerifier and discuss what happened the day David was ready to pack his tools and go home. Diarmuid Griffin, equipment manager at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg in County Clare, Ireland, got his start building off-road go-karts from a kit with his Holy Communion money. After working as a caddie and getting his education in agricultural mechanics, Diarmuid did a stint at a workshop in Saudi Arabia. When a job opened three minutes from his home in Ireland, he jumped at the chance at his dream position. Listen in on how Diarmuid fabricated a tine-holder stand and articulating jib crane. Josefth Moreira, equipment manager at Lake Toxaway Country Club in North Carolina, began his wrenching career in honor of his late dad who was a mechanic himself. Starting out as a flat-rate auto mechanic, Joe’s strength in electrical propelled his career quickly when he took the plunge into turf. With the support of the first superintendent he worked with, Joe learned to jump in and trust himself and his skills, and encourages us to do the same. Joe reminds us we are enough just as we are, and to give ourselves some credit for how far we’ve come since we first started. Hear about Joe’s sincere appreciation for the experienced techs out there sharing their knowledge & raising standards for the entire industry. Just like those he’s looked up to, Joe gives back with his service to the Turf Equipment Technicians Association of the Carolinas.

Don Cotton is the owner of Turf Pride LLC, a turf equipment research and development facility with manufacturing and distribution located in Andalusia, Alabama. Don’s father was a Ford tractor dealer who went into business in 1949, so Don grew up working on equipment, ‘piddling,’ and later selling, researching and developing new equipment. Don takes us through his long career from the first time a customer shared his idea to plant Zoysiagrass and sell his turf to landscapers, through the earliest days of relief grinding reels as a new concept, up to the innovations of today’s turf equipment.

Myles Kemp is the equipment manager at Chemawa Golf Course in North Attleborough, Massachusetts and the inventor of the Birdie Bar height of cut gauge. Myles caught the turf equipment bug as a high schooler and went on to the famed turf equipment program at Lake City Community College. Myles hosted a PGA senior event at his first course fresh out of school. Hear from Myles on what it’s like grinding reels at his house instead of the golf course. Myles reminds us why it’s important to avoid cheap grease and cheap washers, and gives us all the backstory and details on why he invented the Birdie Bar and how they’re made.

Matt Hyde is the equipment manager at Schuyler Meadows Club in Loudonville, New York. This 80s kid is a former dirt track racer and owner of a landscape business turned turf tech. Matt reminds us that you never know what the job you didn’t get might lead to. He gives us the low-down on Baroness walk mowers and explains how he uses Google Drive for inventory and reorder to manage the parts shortages and backorders many of us currently face. Mike Rollins, Regional Manager at SIP Grinder has been in the golf industry for a short 20 months but boy howdy has he made a splash on Twitter. Mike married into the reel grinding business then fell in love with it, using his background in film and media to create outstanding videos promoting equipment managers. We’re getting deep into reel theory, bedknife angles, and relief grinding this week and talking about the hazards of twisted frames. Go behind the scenes with Mike (and DeeWayne Grindz) to learn what the culture of East Lake is really like during the Tour Championship.

Wes Danielewicz is the equipment technician at Butterfield Country Club in Oak Brook, Illinois. Wes enlightens us on the many things that have changed during his 40-year career in golf course equipment maintenance and brings a unique perspective including 22 years at a municipal facility. We discuss the benefits of relief grinding and backlapping as well as the extra pluses of regularly servicing equipment.

Being a greenkeeper at a small country golf course in New South Wales, Australia means you’re doing the equipment maintenance too. After working on a golf course as a jack-of-all-trades, and seeing a need for reel grinding for those country golf courses who would otherwise be facing downtime using a city grinding service, Gareth started a reel grinding operation of his own striving for an overnight turnaround. We discuss some what-not-to-dos from early in our careers and the satisfaction of bringing a dull mower back to life. Gareth gives a ton of credit for the way he operates his reel grinding service today to the Reel Turf Techs community and Hector’s Shop.

From zero golf experience to a head equipment manager position in a year-and-a-half: that’s just how Matt Leis rolls. Matt joins us from the Westin Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. While earning his bachelor’s degree in accounting, Matt got a taste for turf working for his local parks & rec department. After a quick detour in selling private jets, Matt turned his focus to the golf course where, like all of us, he got hooked on the sunrises. Matt built his skills as an irrigation technician, learned to operate heavy equipment, and threw his hat in the ring for the head EM job with less than two years in the industry under his belt. We get into the weeds on the first cut on overseed and have a whole lot of fun with spreadsheets and forecasting. Matt shares his passion for sports officiating, what that side hustle has taught him, and gives a shout-out to his dad who is a special education teacher.

From farm kid to cart boy to equipment manager, Michael Shelton knows his way around the golf course maintenance industry. Michael is a Horry-Georgetown Technical College graduate with an associate’s degree in turfgrass management and worked as an assistant superintendent before moving into equipment management. Like many of us, Michael enjoys the variety of his career whether he’s building two functioning creeks from scratch or hopping on a ‘dozer. With his background and education in agronomy, Michael is a true believer in the importance of understanding - and being able to explain - the why behind agronomic and cultural practices. Michael reminds us to be confident in our abilities and step outside our comfort zones in order to grow. Herb Leyva began his career in the golf industry after 25 years of service in the United States Navy and is now the Equipment Manager at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, CA. Roland gives us a great reminder on the importance of recognizing and naming problems so we can solve them, and shares how his least favorite task at the golf course shop - rebuilding rollers - led him to become an inventor. That’s the scene John Borsos, mechanic at South Park Golf Course in Pittsburgh, PA, found himself in when he joined our industry. John is an ASE Certified Master Technician and successfully completed GCAAA’s Equipment Management Certificate Program Levels 1 and 2. John shares some great tips with the listeners including how making a change when you experience burnout can lead to greater things.
